a meandering post....

Apropos of a few previous posts, the young lady I occasionally watch on YouTube recently posted a video of another girl she saw on TikTok addressing other women. The TikTok girl's point was that men aren't typically intimidated by women's earning status. Courtney Ryan agreed and said she had found the to be true as well, AND... it's something she said she had NEVER heard from another woman. I had heard this online but found it unlikely. Courtney Ryan mentioned that one of the things she hears from the type of girl who considers herself a #BossBabe is that men are intimidated by her earning status, but Miss Ryan felt that was wrong, and basically an excuse for bad behavior that men don't want to put up with.

I'll once again state that I mention this only because it is evidence in the direction I felt, but this time not coming as a man's perspective on women, but from another two women's perspectives on women.

I can honestly say I've not met many women that have the "I'm intimidating to men" attitude. I have one girl I work with who probably feels this way, and to be honest, I think she's great.

I don't say any of this to pick on women at all, who I in general love. I love the way women think, I love their femininity, their outlook, their softness... I just generally like being around women.

I'm convinced part of the reason I enjoy women is because I grew up with two sisters and no brothers. So I had plenty of experience with girls in my formative years.

Ironically enough, about the only woman I don't really get along with is one of those sisters: the one closest to me in age. I don't think that has anything to do with her being a woman, it has to do with her own flawed perceptions. But I won't get in to all the why's here, but a lot of has to do with her belief that I should have done more with her kids when they were growing up. That belief itself carries with it a set of conditions/beliefs: 1) her kids have some deep problems, and 2) those could have been mitigated had I had more input.

But I had enough experience with my sister to know that she does not take kindly to criticism, or even questioning her, of any kind, even the most constructive. So I learned long ago that if she was doing something I didn't agree with, I got out of the way and let her do her thing. She was a school teacher, with a PhD in psychology. She wasn't going to listen to anyone "less than" her about such things, so the entire family just got out of her way and let her apply her theories to raising her kids. Well, the results have been less than stellar. She understands this implicitly, and that's the reason she's upset. Her kids' lives went off the rails under her parentage, and now she's upset that someone, mainly me, didn't step in and do more to help the kids.

Over the years, we have had our ups and downs, several of which I've posted on before. At times, I won't even speak to her, and I do my best to steer clear of her, as she typically does to me too.

But recently she started speaking to me again in a sort of thaw of relations. Even so, imagine my surprise when I got a call asking for advice about what to do with the latest situation.

To set up the basics: my sister lives with my mom and aunt at mom's house. She doesn't pay rent, she doesn't help with any of the housework. She does help with getting my mom to doctor's appts, but only if she isn't upset with someone about something. Her youngest daughter, JL, (mid 20s) moved in some years ago, by just showing up and crashing with her. She had two kids, and added a third since. She is a classic welfare queen/user, who regularly takes off and leaves her two older kids without saying anything.

We are at the point of having to make a decision about JL, and the options are:

1) things stay as they are, with everyone putting up with JL's nonsense.

2) my sister moves to take custody from her daughter

3) the kids end up in the state foster system.

To 1), things can't stay the same. The house is in constant turmoil. While neither my sister, nor her daughter, are my responsibility, my mom is. For my mom's sake, JL needs to go.

To 2), my sister is 58 and has health problems. She is physically not in a great place to be a parent again. We all love the kids (6 and 5 year olds) but no one is in a place to be able to take them. AND there is the fact that JL wouldn't voluntarily relinquish them. They are a meal-ticket for her- she gets money from the state per child, and there is no way she's going to give that up on her own.

To 3), California is probably the worst state in the entire nation for kids in the foster system. Nobody wants these beautiful kids to end up in foster care.

My sister doesn't want to make the call. I get it, I don't either. But now she wants me to tell her what to do about her daughter. Option 1 isn't really an option. JL needs to go, and we'll take steps to remove her. Option 2 is possible, but at great sacrifice. Option 3 is looking more likely, and it sucks.

I've been praying about it since I found out last night and my stomach is sick thinking about it.

I counseled 3) as the most reasonable option, just praying that somehow, against the odds, the kids would find better homes than they have now.

But I also suggested that she pray and ask the Lord what to do. I have been praying, I sought prayer from some people who I respect, and who have been through this scenario themselves. But this is no fun at all.

Like I said up front- meandering post. I went from a dating video, to family relations, to asking for prayer for this current situation.

this was one of the things you told levi when you first started dating, just so he didn’t come over (once y’all got that comfortable) randomly and was surprised by 14 year old. you explained you got pregnant at around 13-14 from making decisions too fast and levi was surprisingly accepting. he made a secret promise to himself that he would try to be the best step dad as possible — he’s not gonna replace your sons dad obviously but he’ll try to a good step dad

he was nervous to meet your son for the first time, he wanted to make a good impression so he cleaned up his house a bit more, make some tea and some snacks for the three of you and then let you guys over. the two boys got along very well and your son taught him about social media (has a surprisingly good amount of tiktok followers, levi was flabbergasted to say the least)

teaches him about teas, cleaning and other things he likes. i feel like levi would have hobbies that 90% of teenagers wouldn’t like doing nowadays but your son is the type of person to like learning about anything and everything (spoiler alert they have tea wednesdays for the guys only. sorry mom!)

would be genuinely confused about tiktok trends and videos he does. he would kinda just sit or stand there like 🕴🏽 the entire video unless he has to talk/answer questions. he obviously gives him permission to post them because he’s not that mean (everyone loves the two together)

dispite not likeing the dad he will still drop your son off every weekend either with you or for you. he just doesn’t talk to him like you and your son so he just kinda stands there and reacts accordingly. will only talk to him if he asks a question (you kinda to talk to him only about your son but that’s it)

the type to bring your son his lunch during lunch at school. he thinks he deserves a fresh warm mean instead of it having to sit in his backpack all day and get cold or soggy if it’s a sandwich (he does the same for you don’t worry)

just like hange he knew you had a daughter and was there for the birth. he was there for you and your daughter the entire time then after three years you turned 18 started dating him

i have a headcannon he likes fashion and stuff like that so he and your daughter always match together on “daddy-daughter days” and he also watches fashion shows with her and they talk about what they liked most

he wears anything and everything she makes for him. he will proudly show off his new bracelet like “yeah — my daughter made this for me 😌✨” with the happiest look on his face as he shows off his new bracelet along with the seven others he has on

you’re probably wondering where the dad is? well the dad kinda just fucking ✨poof✨ once he found out you were pregnant. which means your daughter will always think onyankopon is her biological dad until you two finally tell her the truth, but let’s not think about that right now — let’s enjoy everything before that talk 😁

totally cried on her first day of school — you had to reassure him she’ll be okay and that she’s gonna make new friends, he has fears she will be bullied by other kids for the next 12 years of public school. (he’s asked more than once if y’all could homeschool her, he’s surprisingly really good at math. just never ask him about science, he’s horrible at it)

takes pictures/videos of literally everything. when she started walking best believe he has like 20 different videos. when she started talking he had hundreds of videos of her saying random words she’s learned from you two. my man had to buy a few terabytes for his phone because he absolutely REFUSES to delete anything from his gallery

she loves to hold/carry your son everywhere. again you have to tell her she can’t do that a lot because he’s gonna always wanna be carried and never wanna walk anywhere. she pouted a bit and then agreed. so now she’s always holding his hand whenever they go somewhere instead of carrying him

she loves you both and will do literally anything to make you both happy. she’d die for the both of you even though she never says it out loud. you and your son are the only things she’s got right now, the only thing really keeping her going so of course she’s gonna walk to the moon and back twice for you both

Novel Prep Tag: gifted

Thanks for tagging me, @aziz-writes! You’re a gem as always!

Note: I’m talkative, so most of my side comments are crossed out don’t mind me

First Look

1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences (elevator pitch)

After nearly failing the application test, a young girl rejected by a superpowered society for not having a superpower* of her own is accepted into Falks, a school that teaches kids how to be superheroes. But after an attack on the school nearly kills her and her classmates, she must learn to work with her new friends before one of her oldest friends is lost forever.

(*’superpowers’ in this universe are called Gifts, and those who have them are called Gifted. The minority who don’t have Gifts are called Ungifted. The title is ironic and also a reference to a running joke Sofia has with herself)

2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? (Novella, single book, book series, etc.)

It’s the first book in a series! Right now I have four books, but since I’m a chronic overwriter, that may or may not have to be extended to five books.

3. What’s your novel’s aesthetic?

Honestly? Aesthetics aren’t really my thing, so I’m not sure. Maybe soft warm colors, that surprised flutter in your chest when someone gives you a thoughtful present, the ache after yet another workout, that scratchy feeling in your throat when your right on the edge of crying but no one else can tell? This started out as a lighthearted superhero story I swear-

4. What other stories inspire your novel?

If you’re an anime fan, you’ll probably look at the general premise of this and some of the basic details of some of the characters and go “Wait a second, that’s a lot like My Hero Academia” and listen. I know. It’s not the same plot though, I promise! Really, at this point, I’d like to think that it’s undergone so many changes that the two are pretty decently removed, but *shrugs*. I’m not as pressed about it anymore.

I was also loosely inspired by Harry Potter, simply because my book also takes place throughout a school year, so I’m using Harry Potter as a frame of reference for pacing (theoretically). That being said, trans rights and fuck JK Rowling am I right?

5. Share 3+ images that give a feel for the novel

For the sake of saving space, I’ll not do that this go around. But imagine fireworks, a freshly brewed cup of tea, and an overwhelmingly expensive weight room and you’ve got a pretty good image of three important things in this book.

Main Characters

6. Who is your protagonist?

Sofia Smith! The Ungifted girl with a chip on her shoulder! Also an utter jock who usually wears athleisurewear and trust me, I’m as thrilled as you are about that. I don’t work out! I don’t even know what a healthy workout routine looks like! What have I done-

7. Who is their closest ally?

I’d say it’s a toss-up between Leona Kita, a girl she meets during the application tests who quickly becomes her new best friend and is not all that she seems, and Romilly Quirke, a teacher at Falks with whom she develops a close mentorship and is not all that she seems

8. Who is their enemy?

In the beginning, it’s Kyran ‘Kruze’ Cinege, Sofia’s childhood friend-turned-enemy. However, the turning point of the novel is when it’s revealed that while she and Kruze are always fighting (physically or not), there’s someone out there who’s actively trying to kill her and that person might be a more pressing threat than Kruze.

You may also see me occasionally mention The Prophet’s Daughter, who, like all of the important antagonists in this series, hilariously still doesn’t have an actual name. It’s fine. Everything’s fine.

9. What do they want more than anything?

To become the top Hero it’s not bnha you weeb

10. Why can’t they have it?

She’s Ungifted, so no one believes she can do it. Not only that, but also every single other person in her class at Falks is highly qualified - they’re the most promising kids in the country, after all - and also highly motivated to do the same, so she’s got... a lot of competition.

11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?

That she can hold up the weight of the world on her own - worse, that she has to hold up the weight of the world on her own. Among other things

12. Draw your protagonist! (Or share a description)

Not an artist, but I can freely say that Sofia’s face claim is Amandla Stenberg (especially Hunger Games era Amandla Stenberg because, you know, high school).

Plot Points

13. What is the internal conflict?

She’s desperately lonely, but to admit she needs other people is to admit weakness, and to admit weakness is to admit defeat - something she absolutely cannot do. I mean, not really and it’s okay to ask for help, but she doesn’t know that. We’re working on it.

14. What is the external conflict?

Sofia is fighting the entire world to become a Hero and also someone is trying to kill her and her classmates.

Oh and each book revolves around her relationship (platonic or otherwise) with one of what I call the ‘core five’ changing and developing in a radically game-changing way. In this book, it’s her and Kruze struggling to come to terms with elements of their past and maybe overcome their conflict to become friends again...? Except their both stubborn assholes and have been fighting for so long they can’t remember how to exist in the same room without one of them blowing up eventually (literally, in Kruze’s case) (I’ll probably talk more about the core five in a different post tbh)

15. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?

Oof. Well. If someone died on her watch, that’d be pretty bad for her. Good thing that’ll never happen though! Haha...ha...hm.

16. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?

Of this story? Shit maybe they weren’t after me after all. The story as a whole? Wait, you’re my what?

17. Do you know how it ends?

I actually have the epilogue of the last book already planned out! I will cry when I actually write it. But the end of the main plotline? Eh... I know who all is involved, and what all of the characters have evolved into at that point. But how Sofia and co. actually defeat the BBEG? I am... less sure.

18. What is the theme?

In this book specifically: it’s okay to step back and ask for help when you’re struggling - just because you can’t do it on your own doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be where you are.

In the overall series: something something found family something the power of friendship.

19. What is a recurring symbol?

Oh damn, this is a really good question. In fact, since I’m still in first draft mode (although I did write maybe a good quarter or so of a zero draft) I don’t think any have really emerged that I’ve noticed yet? But I guess I’ll come back and update this if I think of anything.

20. Where is the story set? (Share a description!)

It’s set in a very fancy, very modern private school that’s on the edge of a city somewhere near Washington D.C. I’m... not great at describing environments/settings, though, so that’s all you get haha

21. Do you have any images or scenes in your mind already?

Oh yeah, plenty. I have this whole book outlined, actually, on a chapter-by-chapter level! I got excited and also bored during my three-hour-interim between classes, and there was a whiteboard just asking to be filled... I even have some disconnected scenes from future books floating around in my mind - some incredibly emotional and poignant, some glorified shitposts. Ah, writing. It’s such a magnificent hobby.

22. What excited you about this story?

The characters! No joke, there are sixteen kids in the Falks class including Sofia, and every single one of them has their own complex backstories, motivations, and character arcs - not to mention I’ve spent a significant portion of time outlining each of their Gifts and figuring out how exactly they work. I could ramble about any of them for hours.

And that’s not even mentioning Sofia’s family, the villains, the teachers... I just really love every single character in this book!

23. Tell us about your usual writing method!

Step one: watch or read something. Anything. A movie, another book, a commercial, a music video, a tiktok, I’m not kidding just about anything will do. Step two: think ‘oh, I could do that better’. Step three: jot down some early lines or general ideas. Step four: leave it to stew for a little while as you think ‘oh jeez maybe I can’t do it as well as I thought’. Step five: get suddenly inspired on it and feverishly carve out several rough chapters. Step six: let it stew some more. Step seven: get newly inspired, realize how much has changed in your mind about that earlier draft, call that the zero draft, and actually do an outline this time. Step eight: ...Write it for realsies this time!

Whew, that was a doozie! Super fun though! So, according to the rules, you’re supposed to tag the same number of people as questions you answered. So there are 23 questions, and it turns out I’ve got exactly 23 people who (I don’t think) aren’t opposed to tag games, so here, have something besides a last line tag for once! Enjoy!

hello all!! its stella, and here’s my angel, ella! below are some quick facts and some wanted connections. i’m literally so hype to plot with all of you, so hit me up! or like this post and i’ll come to you on discord! (you can find me at ally bee#3923 !!!)

history.

she’s the only daughter of her mother, heather, and the third and by far youngest daughter of her father, alexander. (both of her half-sisters are like nearly 20 years older than her). her parents were a little absent, but overall demanding. they wanted the best from her.

her mother, in particular, wanted her to be well-read and get excellent grades and be a ballerina. needless to say she has anxiety now.

her parents, teachers, and all her adults role models encouraged her shy, quiet demeanor (seen but not heard), and, well, its what they wanted, so thats what she did. however, this severely impacted her ability to make friends as a young child. this is something she has carried over into adulthood.

books were her first friends, and they drove her into coping through worlds of fantasy. she wrote fanfiction before she even knew what it was, shitty self-insert stuff she’s embarrassed to admit to now. she clung to her fantasy worlds to make her living life a little more bearable. she never really left them.

when she went to university, she chose covington because of the history, its emphasis on the arts, and, most importantly, its distance from home. going home often feels like a burden more than anything. sure, hemlock can be lonely, but at least she’s lonely somewhere new instead of somewhere familiar. at least she still has hope here.

and melanie, oh melanie, was the sun. ever gregarious, she quickly befriended the quiet eloise freshman year, and poor eloise took her conversational nature as genuine romantic interest. she fell hard and fast for this beautiful women who deigned to pay attention to her.

but when she confessed her feelings, of course, melanie politely turned her down, and it hurt more than eloise could bear. she still clings to that rejection, to the ideal of melanie, as a way to hurt herself. of course melanie would never love her, because nobody ever would.

reads way too many books don’t ask her about the grisha trilogy or the raven cycle series she will talk your ear off and then go red and shove her foot in her mouth.

her dream is to be a children’s/ya author, to give the same support to young girls as she received from her favorite books
