Read through light novel vol. 4. Random thoughts.
Tumblr media
I don't think I've ever seen an adaptation/source material relationship quite like that between Goblin Slayer's anime and light novels.
Episodes 1-4: most of vol. 1. Episode 5: mix of vol. 1 and beginning of vol. 4. Episodes 6-9: Entirety of vol. 2. Episodes 10-12: Rest of vol. 1. It certainly wasn't a bad season but it's funny to see the books adapted in such an almost random order. Closest I've ever had to this was Rising of the Shield Hero, which adapted vols. 1-5, the beginning of 6, and then at the end a little bit from vol. 10.
“There are people who use a torch instead of a lantern, because it doubles as a weapon.”
Guild Girl mentioned with a smile that rats and insects both despised fire.
“What kind of adventurer would do something like that?”
Goblin Slayer: "You've got something on your face."
Goblin: "GORB?"
[Stabs goblin in face with burning torch]
Goblin Slayer: "It was pain!"
That second chapter really suckered me in at first into thinking it was a flashback, but I suppose that was the idea. It's like when Batman saves a family from an alley mugging. It's a classic way of showing the hero keeping what happened to them from happening to anyone else. Goblin Slayer is making a difference, even if he doesn't always feel like he is because of how endless the world's number of goblins seems to be.
As much as Spearman could stand to take the hint that Guild Girl is not into him, I do really like that Spearman isn't at all a bad dude. Again, he has a spear but he's not a Motoyasu. He's not hitting on every attractive woman he meets or treating his party as an excuse to build a harem for himself. Witch feels like his trusted ally and equal before anything else, not just someone he's trying to impress because she's got big bizongas. Admittedly I'm not entirely sure what his relationship with her is. The implication is that she maybe likes him romantically (seeing Guild Girl as a romantic rival and all) and they talk about going on "dates" but it's hard to tell how serious either is being about that.
The chapter with the goblin sentry guard was kind of interesting for me, because part of the way into reading it I realized I had read it before...the manga version. I'm stumbled upon the chapter by accident through a Pintrest link of one of the pages where Goblin Slayer is carrying poor spear girl (Spearwoman?) out of the cave. At the time I'd thought it was a fan-comic, not because it was badly drawn but because the goblins had a different design. Between that and this chapter, I think the manga's was harder to get through, but for a different reason than the anime could be. The anime had audio, so the screams from Fighter and Priestess when the champion bit her arm were what left me really shaken up (Fighter especially because, while I wasn't seeing it, I knew what was happening). With the manga, how much of Spearwoman's body was shown off, the positions she was in, and the angles of the camera made it feel uncomfortably like a porn comic. I don't have a problem with fanservice in and of itself. This volume and previous ones have plenty of fanservicey artwork. But there's a time and a place for it. Cow Girl and Priestess trying on battle bikinis and High Elf Archer waking up in the nude? It's pervy but still harmless. A woman being violently raped should not be used to titillate the audience and I'm so glad the light novels have had the good taste (so far) to not do anything like that with its illustrations. Even High Elf Archer, when her clothes were torn away by the goblins in Water Town, she escapes non-violated and we get the art of her helping Goblin Slayer walk, but she's not drawn at all in a sexual way despite being half-naked.
But back to the actual volume, I really liked showing things from the goblin guard's perspective. The goblin happy with the spear he stole...at first. But then wondering if the belt would have been better and then hating the goblin who got the belt instead of his "stupid" spear, with said goblin likely thinking the same about him, just the other way around. Again, they're not mindless monsters. They're incredibly selfish and self-centered, each one believing he is the best and thus that he is the one entitled to everything. It also serves as another reminder that goblins are no victim of racial circumstances. Yes, there are no females of their race and thus they have to force themselves on others in order to procreate...but they seem like they would probably be doing that regardless. When their victim fights back, they hurt her more as punishment and to break her. And when their victim doesn't fight back, allowing themselves to be violated so that hopefully it won't hurt anymore (yeah, there's a lot in this chapter that's hard to get through but that especially with how unfortunately real that mentality feels), the goblins hurt them even more, taking it as an excuse to go as far as they can with them.
These aren't mindless monsters that have to rape to survive. They like the pain and suffering they cause others.
Which is where he comes in; to stab them, impale them, light them on fire, and kick them in the d*ck before stabbing them again.
Hm? Cow Girl thought suspiciously, but an explanation was soon forthcoming.
“Today is...a bit of a rough day for it...”
“Sure.” Cow Girl gave a strained smile and nodded. It was something every woman had to deal with.
You know...I've read through three other fantasy LN series in full thus far. Overlord, Konosuba, and Rising of the Shield. And I'm pretty sure out of all of them (and even out of the majority of other series I've read/watched), Goblin Slayer is the only one I've seen that even acknowledges girls having their periods. I get that it's like watching a character go to the bathroom; it's not usually relevant to the story and you can just assume it's happening off-screen. But it still just sat with me for a moment and I went "...Huh. Yeah, that would be a problem for them, wouldn't it?"
Also, these two are just adorable together. I like that they're friends. They don't pass the Bechdel test (though High Elf Archer and Guild Girl surprisingly do) but their bonding was still great to read.
“I have no interest in magical swords, but I do have a ring.”
“Oh yeah?”
“It allows underwater breathing,” Goblin Slayer said briefly. “Even if the goblins stole it, it would do no harm.”
“What would they even want it for? Wait a second—you just assume it’ll get stolen?”
Spearman was pressing on his temples, but the steel helmet nodded and said, “Of course. It wouldn’t fit on a goblin finger.”
After Cow Girl and Priestess trying on the battle bikinis I was already laughing at the idea of a Goblin Slayer beach episode. Now I really want to see that. Everyone's on the beach showing off their summer bodies and swimwear while he's still in his full armor. They're all playing volleyball and building sandcastles and he's slowly turning the ocean red as he's just murdering goblin sharks all day.
All seriousness through, I do love this consistency with Goblin Slayer's character and methods. We've seen tons of goblins throughout this story and the only ones that maybe would have benefited from underwater breathing would have been the ones on the boats in the sewers of Water Town. Otherwise, yeah, it'd be useless to a basic nest and they'd have almost no way of finding out what it can even do, so they wouldn't even move elsewhere to take advantage of such magic. Plus he has apparently destroyed nests by flooding them before, so it makes sense he'd want to prepare himself for just in case he ever got caught up in the water.
Also, Goblin Slayer, Heavy Warrior, and Spearman were a really fun team to see work together. I love the sense of respect the three share and that Goblin Slayer never has any problem acknowledging how much better they are than him when it comes to things like leadership, charisma, enthusiasm, or just certain general abilities. If there is a little bit of competitiveness it's still very friendly and never becomes a pissing contest between the three. Heavy Warrior and Spearman don't exist just to make Goblin Slayer look good by comparison. In fact, they're very good at what they do. It's just what they do isn't murdering the ever-loving sh*t out of goblins, thus why they're not the ones we're following the story through.
“I picked up the spear,” he said. “The shaft is broken, but the point remains.”
"You are hurt and broken right now. But you can recover. You can be okay again."
This is probably just me looking way too deep into things but I like to believe Goblin Slayer said those words because of his party's, and especially Priestess', influence on him. I'm sure he's saved many women from goblins in the past but before Priestess I think he just saved their lives, sent them off to the temple, and then just kept moving on without looking back, thinking about nothing other than killing more goblins. After all his and Priestess' time together, and her making it clear he played no small part in helping her keep moving after the tragedy of her first party, maybe he's now wondering if there's more he can do to help these women recover, even if it's just a few kind words to help them hold onto their sanity after what they've been through. Spearwoman was so attached to that spear that hearing that it's still intact enough to be fixed maybe helped her believe she could be too.
“Isn’t it?” She stuck out her delightfully average chest, as proud as if she had grown it herself. “And you know what? The person who brought it was someone you saved recently.”
“...Was it, now?”
“Uh-huh!” Guild Girl let her eyes drift to the corn with an expression that bespoke relief. It was rare that adventurers or mercenaries found themselves with a second chance when they had failed once. “It’s great, huh?”
Does that imply it was Spearwoman? I'm hoping so. It'd be nice if someone who was used by the goblins (hopefully NEVER one of the girls in the main cast) did still manage to go back to being an adventurer again and wasn't just left permanently defeated. Honestly, it'd be cool if either her or Fighter or someone like I'm describing came back and adventured with GS's crew for a bit. Goblin Slayer witnessed what they do and it almost happened to Priestess and High Elf Archer but we don't have anyone yet who was raped by the goblins and yet is still fighting. Sword Maiden is about the closest but her very understandable trauma and duties as the Sword Maiden keep her away.

Mud and Daisies || Bruce Wayne
Tumblr media
Pairing: Pre-Batman!Bruce Wayne x Reader
Word Count: 2,415
Warnings: Enough fluff to make you smile :)
Prompt: Based on this - (Eventually)
Listen While You Read: Lava
Notes: Part 2 to Dirt and Roses
“This is the most amazing lemonade I have EVER tasted.” You rubbed your lips together, the sweetness of the ice-cold drink clearing your head and quenching your thirst on the spot. “Mmm… Man, that is good.”
Bruce grinned through his cup as he tilted his head back to drain the contents of his own glass. “Alfred, she’s right. This is some magnificent lemonade.”
“Thank you, Ms. (y/l/n), Master Bruce.” The butler poured you each another glass.
“I could drink this for the rest of my life. Thank you, Alfred.” You turned to the man, hoping he realized how sincere you were.
“You’re welcome Ms. (y/l/n). It is my pleasure.” The older man returned your smile. Then it slowly faded from his lips as he held out his wrist to check his watch. “I apologize, Master Bruce, but I believe it is time for your meeting.”
Bruce’s expression soured quickly, an abrupt change from the flirting he had been doing a minute ago. “Ah… Thank you. Have a car pulled around.”
The butler departed, but not before letting you know that it was a pleasure to meet you.
“Thank you for the lemonade, Bruce… And the second break.” Your sun-kissed skin glowed in the brilliant daylight as you grinned at the young man before you.
Bruce couldn’t recall ever being this reluctant to attend a meeting. Sure, they weren’t his favorite things in the world, but he had never had an actual reason not to attend before. He tried his best to wipe the disappointment from his features. “Thank you for sharing a glass of lemonade with me.”
“That wasn’t difficult, it’s still the best lemonade I’ve tasted in my entire life. I honestly don’t see why you would want to share it with anyone.”
That seemed to bring a spark of happiness back into his eyes. “Well, (y/n), you’re not just anyone.” He turned and entered the car before you had a chance to respond, and all you could do was watch the license plate as it disappeared down the driveway.
You sighed before realizing you still held the crystal glass in your grasp. You are such an idiot (y/n)…
You slowly climbed the front steps of Wayne Manor, hesitating before knocking softly on one of the large doors. It momentarily swung open, Alfred standing behind it with a polite smile.
“I’m really sorry about this, I forgot I still had the glass in my hand…”
“Come in, Ms. (y/l/n).” He held his hand out for the glass.
You passed it to him, then gripped your hands together. Your nerves were completely wack from everything that had occurred today.
“Thank you.”
You tried to maintain eye contact with the man, but you had never been in a place like this before and your eyes were wandering absolutely everywhere. “Uh, you’re welcome. I’m sorry to have caused so much trouble.”
Alfred shook his head. “I apologize, I meant to thank you for Master Bruce.”
Your eyes snapped back to the butler with the mention of Bruce. “What?”
“It has been a long time since he has been happy and to see him smile again is truly a magnificent sight that I thought I may never see again.” The tiniest glimmer in the old man’s eyes led you to believe he was telling the truth, and that made you feel a whole handful of emotions at once.
Mainly you were confused. How could someone so… so… you, make someone who could have anything they could dream of wanting, happy? That didn’t make any sense. Then there was some happiness. You made him happy? Well, he made you happy too… even if it was in a flustered ‘I am making a total fool out of myself’ sort of way. And there was some sadness. Had he really been so unhappy before today? For as long as Alfred made it sound? You had never met him before today so you had no idea what he was like before you talked to him, but for someone to be devoid of happiness for so long… the thought of it broke your heart. All of these flooded over you in a tsunami of emotion, all because of what the butler had said.
You stared, dumbfounded, at the older man for a few seconds before realizing you should probably say something.
“He makes me happy too.” The whole world seemed to stand still when you spoke those words. Everything was frozen in time. In that moment of silence.
“How would you like to join Master Bruce for lunch tomorrow?” You could tell the man was feeling a little more than mischievous.
“I would love to, but are you sure? I mean I don’t want to bother him or anything.”
“I’m certain. How would noon work for you, Ms. (y/l/n)?” He looked so casual, practically setting you up on a date. A date with a billionaire.
“Okay, yeah. That sounds good.”
“Brilliant.”
“Well, I should get back to work… Thanks for everything, Alfred.” You smiled, if a little nervously, and waved before exiting the humongous house.
“You are most welcome, Ms. (y/l/n).” The large door shut behind you, pushing you back into the reality that you still had a couple of hours before you were free to leave for the day. You mentally prepared to have the events of the past half hour on repeat for the rest of your day. Or the rest of your life. You are so in over your head.
Today you wore a watch, which you had checked every five minutes for the past hour. The closer it got to noon, the more wildly your mind ran in every other direction except towards your job. You and Mrs. Evans were working on the daisies today, near the east side of the manor.
“Lass, you’re stressing me out.” Your friend, Mrs. Evans, had been trying to get you to calm down for the past hour. “You’re going to have lunch with a nice young man in half an hour and that’s it. You have lunch with me every day and you ain’t never been this nervous ‘bout eating near me before.”
“Yeah, but you’re my friend, Mrs. Evans. I like Bruce. I like him more than I’ve ever liked anyone before and it’s just got me on edge a little is all.” You stood up to move your equipment to the right a little before bending back down and resuming your work.
“A little? You could sharpen an ax on your nerves today, missy.” She chuckled, taking a breather to grab her water bottle.
“When I spoke to Alfred yesterday, he practically said he thinks Bruce likes me. Nobody has ever like liked me before. I have absolutely no idea what I’m supposed to do. I have absolutely zero experience in the romance department. Zilch, nadda, nothing!” You pulled your glove down to glance at your watch again. 11:33.
“And - another thing! He’s so handsome! I doubt he’s ever met a girl who hasn’t swooned over him. I don’t want him to think I like him just because he’s got money and he’s hot.”
“Thanks… I think?”
He did it again. He had walked up behind you exactly when you said the most embarrassing thing you could have said.
“Ah, hi… Bruce…!?” You honestly couldn’t believe that this was how you were going to start off your lunch. The same way every single thing you did yesterday had gone.
He rubbed the back of his neck, apparently taking the awkward situation a little bit more smoothly than you. “I was wondering if I could help... Alfred’s still putting the finishing touches on our lunch, and I was getting tired of waiting.”
“Uh. Okay.” You tried to get your brain to move again. He wanted to help. Help with what? What were you doing a second ago? Embarrassing yourself… Um… your job. Yeah, you were pulling weeds. Okay, he wants to help pull weeds. Simple enough to teach. Okay. You got this.
“Here, use this so you don’t get your clothes dirty.” You got up to hand him your kneeling pad, but he waved it away.
“Okay, um, first things first. Take these so you can protect your hands.” You went to remove your gloves and pass them to him, but again he waved them away.
“No thanks.” He almost had a sort of pride in his voice like he was trying to prove something to you.
“Are you sure? Your hands are going to end up caked in dirt.” You weren’t quite sure what he was up to.
“Positive.”
“Fine then,” you pulled your gloves off completely and stuck them with the rest of your tools, “I can play this game too.” You grabbed the kneeling pad and placed it beside the gloves. You stretched out after having been kneeling already for a couple of hours previously, cracking your knuckles.
If he was surprised by your actions, you couldn’t tell.
“It’s on.” After a moment, his smirk faded into a confused frown. “Wait. I have no idea what we’re doing.”
“Pulling weeds?”
“Yeah, I got that, but I’ve never really…”
“It’s fine, I’ll teach you.” You plastered the first confident smile you had been in possession of around him on your face. Not everyone pulls weeds in their lifetime, and you didn’t want him to feel bad about it.
You got down on your hands and knees, motioning for him to do the same.
“Okay, so there are a few different types of weeds in here with the daises. You pointed to the different weeds. “This kind right here,” you grabbed ahold of a taller, thicker weed, “it’s extra stubborn so you really have to use your muscles.” You let go of the bigger weed and grabbed a smaller one. “And this type, it breaks off easily, so occasionally you’ll be lucky and be able to pull the whole thing out at once, but more often than not you’re going to have to dig it up roots and all while avoiding hurting the daisies.”
You looked back to him and he seemed to be following along pretty well.
“There’s a bit of clover and some wild grasses and stuff but those are quick and easy. Got it?”
He nodded, that little bit of pride still sticking to his features. “Yep.”
“If you have a question about anything just ask.” You smiled back at him. “Sometimes a random weed sneaks its way into the mix… Oh, and you can put the weeds you pull in this bucket, and when it fills up I’ll dump it into the barrel.”
“Aye aye, captain.”
You laughed a small laugh, feeling surprisingly more comfortable around him now than you had yesterday. That didn’t mean your mind wasn’t still reeling though. The moist coolness from the dirt soaked into the palm you were resting your body weight on. The smoothness of it always calming. You other hand removing intruding plants and placing them in the bucket beside you.
“Do you like flowers?” Such a stupid question, but you were slightly curious. You worked in his flowerbeds for a living for crying out loud, but that didn’t mean that he actually liked them. There was an equal chance that they were just for show.
“I don’t know.”
You hummed slightly at his response.
“I’ve never really thought about it before, but I think I’m starting to.”
Suddenly he fell backward, dirt spraying everywhere, most specifically all over both of your faces.
You couldn’t help but crack up at the sight, soil in his hair, his clothes grass stained and dirty.
He sat back up, and this time he was the one feeling embarrassed.
You reached up with the hand that was covered in the dark substance, “You’ve got a bit of dirt right here.” sliding your finger down his cheek you smirked at him, giving him a taste of his own medicine.
“Oh, really?” He dragged his finger down your nose. “Well so do you.”
His eyes diverted from you, fixing on something you couldn’t see he got up and ran to something a few feet away.
With a start, you remembered there being a wheelbarrow nearby full of soil that was going to be used for some of the surrounding flower beds.
“Oh, no you don’t!” You took off after him, but he had already beaten you to the treasure. The soil inside had gotten damp recently, and instead of plain old dirt the wheelbarrow was full of mud.
“Jackpot.” The boy had a devilish grin spread across his face.
You froze in your tracks. How were you supposed to get any ammo? He had the whole thing to himself. Unless… You decided to brave it, rushing towards the pile of mud.
*Smack*
A goopy spot of brown guk landed smack dab in the middle of your stomach. You met the eyes of the offender, but you couldn’t quite read what he was thinking. Was he concerned he had gone too far? He definitely didn’t look like he wanted to give up yet, a glop of muck in his hand ready to be launched.
You continued forward a look of pure determination hardened on your face. Another blob gloshed into your shoulder, but you continued onwards, reaching the pile of glooshy gold. You sunk your hand into the mix, pulling up a large glob of ick and hurled it back at him, catching him right where his heart would be. He faked being shot, calling out to the light, and saying not to forget him. To go on without him.
You sent another blob of nasty towards him, again in the chest. He crawled his way towards the barrow, you peppering his back with gross sploshes of mud as he made his way towards you. Slowly he pulled himself up and started flinging mud at you again. You grabbed some and rubbed it into his hair, and he returned the favor.
He took off sprinting again, you following behind. Both of your laughs echoing through the air. He continued to the font of the property where he abruptly jumped into the fountain, splashing you furiously. You followed suit, trying to aim for the face. Out of nowhere, he managed to tackle you and you both fell into the water, completely soaked from head to toe. You were both laughing so hard that you just laid there in the water, breathing heavy and grinning like idiots.

Eisner Awards 2019 Predictions
https://ift.tt/2jSlSS7
Once again we try and predict this year's Eisner Awards winners. Once again, we're probably entirely wrong.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
Happy Comic-Con Eve, all! I had a whole "'Twas the night before Comic Con" bit lined up, but APPARENTLY it's considered a faux pas to reveal the location of the annual SDCC post-Eisners key party on the internet, so you'll have to just hang out here for a while as we pick over the list of nominees for comics' most prestigious awards and tell you why the books we liked most will win! And then come back after the ceremony to tell us why we were completely wrong.
Best Short Story
Tumblr media
- “Get Naked in Barcelona,” by Steven T. Seagle and Emei Olivia Burrell, in Get Naked (Image)
- “The Ghastlygun Tinies,” by Matt Cohen and Marc Palm, in MAD Magazine #4 (DC)
- "Here I Am," by Shaun Tan, in I Feel Machine (SelfMadeHero)
“Life During Interesting Times,” by Mike Dawson (The Nib), Supply Chains,” by Peter and Maria Hoey, in Coin-Op #7 (Coin-Op Books)
- “The Talk of the Saints,” by Tom King and Jason Fabok, in Swamp Thing Winter Special (DC)
Institutional bias against webcomics will probably be enough to keep Dawson’s comic from winning, but I would probably give it to “Life During Interesting Times.” It’s a thoughtful look at the world we live in that tries to place it into historical context, simultaneously playing up the urgency of the terrible world we live in and expressing hope for the future. It’s also full of really great storytelling tricks - overlapping panels dissolving into each other telling the same story in multiple times. Dawson’s a talented storyteller who should get some recognition for his work.
Best Single Issue/One-Shot
Tumblr media
- Beneath the Dead Oak Tree, by Emily Carroll (ShortBox)
- Black Hammer: Cthu-Louise, by Jeff Lemire and Emi Lenox (Dark Horse)
- No Better Words, by Carolyn Nowak (Silver Sprocket)
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #310, by Chip Zdarsky (Marvel)
- The Terrible Elisabeth Dumn Against the Devils In Suits, by Arabson, translated by James Robinson (IHQ Studio/ Image)
I screwed up. I read a ton of comics through my subscription services that are a couple of months behind, and because of that I didn’t read the last issue of Zdarsky’s Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man until months after it came out. It is the best Spider-Man comic I’ve ever read. It cuts to the core of why this character has endured for so long. It’s an absolutely beautiful book about how the world views Parker that made me cry at least twice, and one of those times was when I was remembering what happened in it.
Best Continuing Series
Tumblr media
- Batman, by Tom King et al. (DC)
Black Hammer: Age of Doom, by Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, and Rich Tommaso (Dark Horse)
- Gasolina, by Sean Mackiewicz and Niko Walter (Skybound/Image)
- Giant Days, by John Allison, Max Sarin, and Julaa Madrigal (BOOM! Box)
- The Immortal Hulk, by Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, and Ruy José (Marvel)
- Runaways, by Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka (Marvel)
There isn’t really a wrong choice in this category: King’s Batman is one of the best sustained runs on the character I’ve ever read; Ewing and Bennett’s Immortal Hulk is my favorite Hulk run of all time; Giant Days is a terrific slice of life YA-adjacent comic; and Rowell should be on a ton of best new comics writer shortlists (despite her being a great everything else writer).
But Lemire’s Black Hammer hits that perfect sweet spot in his work where it captures the surreal eeriness of his indie stuff with his wonderful ability to build staggering, fascinating superhero universes, and Ormston and Tommaso help make that world so rich and beautiful that it’s hard to pass Black Hammer up.
Best Limited Series
Tumblr media
- Batman: White Knight, by Sean Murphy (DC)
- Eternity Girl, by Magdalene Visaggio and Sonny Liew (Vertigo/DC)
- Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles, by Mark Russell, Mike Feehan, and Mark Morales (DC)
Mister Miracle, by Tom King and Mitch Gerads (DC)
- X-Men: Grand Design: Second Genesis, by Ed Piskor (Marvel)
If I was placing bets on this category, I’d put a lot of money on Mister Miracle and a small but significant amount on The Snagglepuss Chronicles. I don’t understand how we lucked into a great history of the gay rights movement that’s also got a bunch of colorful Hanna Barbera animals as leads. That’s one of the most amazing accomplishments I’ve ever seen in comics.
However, Mister Miracle is the best comic I’ve bought monthly ever. It’s beautiful, ambiguous, thoughtful, methodical. It’s a masterpiece of form and function that tells a story that takes these bizarre Jack Kirby characters and uses them to tell a real story about mental health, parenthood, work, relationships and love. And it doubles as a love letter to comics history.
Best New Series
Tumblr media
Bitter Root, by David Walker, Chuck Brown, and Sanford Greene (Image)
- Crowded, by Christopher Sebela, Ro Stein, and Ted Brandt (Image)
- Gideon Falls, by Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino (Image)
- Isola, by Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl (Image)
- Man-Eaters, by Chelsea Cain, Lia Miternique and Kate Niemczyk (Image)
- Skyward, by Joe Henderson and Lee Garbett (Image)
I think Walker, Brown and Greene’s Bitter Root will probably eek by. It’s so much fun - a family of monster hunters living through the Harlem Renaissance dealing with family drama and supernatural stuff. Greene is one of the best artists working in comics today, and their Power Man and Iron Fist is one of my favorite superhero books of the era because of the energy he brought to the art.
Best Publication for Kids (ages 9–12)
Tumblr media
- Aquicorn Cove, by Katie O'Neill (Oni)
- Be Prepared, by Vera Brosgol (First Second)
- The Cardboard Kingdom, by Chad Sell (Knopf/Random House Children’s Books)
- Crush, by Svetlana Chmakova (JY/Yen Press)
The Divided Earth, by Faith Erin Hicks (First Second)
Hicks’ The Divided Earth was one of my favorite books from last year. It’s a perfect all-ages comic: just scary enough, just heavy enough, but bright and vibrant and earnest. When we talked about this as one of our best comics of 2018, I mentioned that I can’t wait to hand this off to young family members, and I’m serious: this series is sitting on my shelf waiting for them to hit the right age.
Best Graphic Album—New
Tumblr media
- Bad Girls, by Alex de Campi and Victor Santos (Gallery 13)
- Come Again, by Nate Powell (Top Shelf/IDW)
- Green Lantern: Earth One Vol. 1, by Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman (DC)
- Homunculus, by Joe Sparrow (ShortBox)
My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips (Image) Sabrina, by Nick
- Drnaso (Drawn & Quarterly)
Green Lantern: Earth One is an outstanding Green Lantern comic, one of my favorite sci-fi books of the last decade. But Brubaker and Phillips’ Criminal comics are Eisner bait the same way that a movie about Hollywood’s golden age is Oscar bait. My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies is the same ridiculously high quality comic we’ve come to expect out of the pair, and it will almost certainly win.
Best Writer
Tumblr media
- Alex de Campi, Bad Girls (Gallery 13); Twisted Romance (Image)
- Tom King, Batman, Mister Miracle, Heroes in Crisis, Swamp Thing Winter Special (DC)
- Jeff Lemire, Black Hammer: Age of Doom, Doctor Star & the Kingdom of Lost Tomorrows, Quantum Age(Dark Horse); Descender, Gideon Falls, Royal City (Image)
- Mark Russell, Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles, Green Lantern/Huckleberry Hound, Lex Luthor/Porky Pig (DC); Lone Ranger (Dynamite)
- Kelly Thompson, Nancy Drew (Dynamite); Hawkeye, Jessica Jones, Mr. & Mrs. X, Rogue & Gambit, Uncanny X-Men, West Coast Avengers (Marvel)
- Chip Zdarsky, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man, Marvel Two-in-One (Marvel)
Every single writer on this list deserves to win. Zdarsky’s shift from gross-out absurdism to one of the best superhero writers in the industry should be recognized. Thompson’s Rogue & Gambit/Mr. & Mrs. X is one of the best X-Men runs in recent memory. De Campi has long been one of the best writers in the business. And King and Lemire are perennial favorites.
But if Mister Miracle starts cleaning up, I can see Russell take this category. Every comic he writes has a certain amount of shock value to it - not that the content is itself shocking, but that it even got made at all. Lex Luthor/Porky Pig is razor sharp satire of modern industry and social media, and Lone Ranger is better than it has any right to be. Russell wins this narrowly.
Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team
Tumblr media
- Matías Bergara, Coda (BOOM!)
Mitch Gerads, Mister Miracle (DC) Karl Kerschl, Isola (Image)
- Sonny Liew, Eternity Girl (Vertigo/DC)
- Sean Phillips, Kill or Be Killed, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies (Image)
- Yanick Paquette, Wonder Woman Earth One, vol. 2 (DC)
Another killer category, but I don’t see how Gerads doesn’t win. His design work, glitching panels to further the story, is so integral but so outside the norm of what you expect from superhero books, that it almost certainly will be recognized for how innovative it is.
Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (interior art)
Tumblr media
- Lee Bermejo, Batman: Damned (DC)
- Carita Lupatelli, Izuna Book 2 (Humanoids)
Dustin Nguyen, Descender (Image) Gregory Panaccione, A Sea of Love (Magnetic/Lion Forge)
- Tony Sandoval, Watersnakes (Magnetic/Lion Forge)
Bermejo is one of the greats, but he’s probably penalized for showing too much of Batman's batarang. Nguyen is also unbelievably gifted, and try and imagine Descender with a different artist: it moves three thousand copies and nobody notices it in a sea of sci-fi/fantasy robot comics. Descender was instead regularly the most beautiful books on the stands with textured watercolors building a gorgeous universe that was at the top of my to read pile every month.
Best Coloring
Tumblr media
- Jordie Bellaire, Batgirl, Batman (DC); The Divided Earth (First Second); Days of Hate, Dead Hand, Head Lopper, Redlands (Image); Shuri, Doctor Strange (Marvel)
Tamra Bonvillain, Alien 3 (Dark Horse); Batman, Doom Patrol (DC); Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Multiple Man (Marvel)
- Nathan Fairbairn, Batman, Batgirl, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman Earth One, vol. 2 (DC); Die!Die!Die! (Image)
- Matt Hollingsworth, Batman: White Knight (DC): Seven to Eternity, Wytches (Image)
- Matt Wilson, Black Cloud, Paper Girls, The Wicked + The Divine (Image); The Mighty Thor, Runaways (Marvel)
This is an impossible category to handicap, but I think Bonvillain’s range wins out. Doom Patrol is so vastly different from Alien 3 or Batman, but each book’s story was greatly enhanced by her ability to match pallette to art style. Everyone here should win, but Bonvillain is doing the best work of her career and should be recognized for it.

[Traditional Enneagram] Can you help me with my type?
Hello everyone. :hi: I'am new here. I would like to know my type, i already took different tests and questionnaires and am kinda aware of which types i might be. So i will not tell yet and see if you guess the same types which would indicate that i'am right :D So before i start i would like to tell that i'am almost certain to be an INTJ, also i was officially diagnosticed with Asperger's. However i hope this will not create confusion as i'am not the typical geek who hates sport. Actually i think i have a very unique personality that is hard to get, hence why i'am trying on here with you! So i'am obviously an introvert even though i tried alot to have friends, i also always felt overwhelmed by social interactions. Hence looking for having few friends who share the same interests as me. I always was torn between my interest for people and my need to be alone leading me to live in a world of fantasy as a kid. I always had this feeling that the world was split in 2 parts, nice people that have the kindness, intelligence(for me kind and intelligent come together, you cannot be really intelligent and bad ) and patience to understand me and be part of "my" team and the rest of the world that just don't get it. I have an original personality and it is very important for me that no one controle who i'am and my views on the world. Both being original and free to think are important for me. For exemple when i was a teen i was frustrated because my parent didn't let me have a mowhawk and other weird hair cuts, but the reason i wanted those was not to be cool or hype, but to show my uniqueness and how i felt different. Also i always rejected and questionned every belief system and prefere to create my own. I'am very interested in occult and esoteric systems to see how they work, how they relate, how they can be debunked and how they can relate somehow to the scientific method (for exemple chemistry having its roots in Alchemy). This because i want to understand the world and hopefully create a more elaborate system to help imporve the world in a better way. Also i have alot of insight and can understand things in a distorted, original way that end up not being wrong but rather different that mainstream interpretations. I always loved to do what is right and as a kid even though always on my own, i could go out of my way and fight in order to defend a kid that was bullied by others even if i didn't know him because it was the right thing to do. I always loved heroes like Batman that protect the innocent and fight corruption. It is more an instinct thing than an emotional one, things should be done right, so there is order. However i will not put myself in too much danger and will prefere to work on my safe place to improve things, i can take some risks yet but nothing that will put me in dangerous situations. I can take risks as long as the harm caused to me can be reversible. Even though i know i have alot weakness i always believed in myself and know that i could become as great as i like, if i had the time to study and prepare myself. Also i have high confidence on my mental integrity and would not be afraid to loose my mind. Here some traits, there are other but if the post is too long, i know no one will read it :D http://www.typologycentral.com/forums/enneagram/90535-help-type-new-post.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
