Screening Hearts - Part 3
So, I figured on 3 or 4 parts to this originally. Now, it’s maybe 5? Who knows. These two just keep being ridiculous, so I keep writing. We’ll see and cross our fingers I can make this hot mess into something.
Also, I apologize for the number of times “check” appears in this one. Quarantine has me making lists of all the things, so I think Elide must make all the lists, too.
Let me know if you want tagged!
...................................................
Elide very carefully swiped her marker over the dry erase calendar above her desk. This is what it feels like to have finally lost it, she thought as she perfected the month and dates in the little black squares. She’d spent all last night rearranging her home office space, expanding the area to house more notebooks, a new-to-this-space jar of pens (which all work after extensively scribble-testing them), her laptop along with the desktop setup that was already there, a wall space for sticky notes, the newly mounted HD webcam, and her favorite chair. Check that off the list.
She was going stir-crazy.
It was bound to happen eventually, right? Her small apartment in a suburb of Orynth was 20 minutes from the office in a downtown business district of the city. Which she hadn’t been to in a week. She hadn’t been outside of her suburb for 5 days. She hadn’t been out of the apartment for 3. Stupid mayor. Stupid politicians. Stupid city limit rules. Stupid apartment in the crap-side of town.
Elide would feel so much better if her boss would actually contact her and give her feedback. She’d feel so much better if she were actually working with her team and not just video conferencing. She’d feel so much better if she could go blow off steam at her favorite pub. She’d feel so much better if Lorcan wasn’t the only consistent contact she’d had.
Aelin and Rowan had Elspeth and were on an extended holiday they’d planned before the merger and were now stuck due to travel restrictions. A cabin in the Staghorn mountains seemed great until you were stuck with limited internet.
Lysandra and Aedion were all the way in Rifthold where he was stationed and she was in between jobs. There were only so many video calls they could do.
Manon and The Thirteen were coordinating relief efforts in the Wastes where travel restrictions hit hardest. Dorian, of course, was there, up Manon’s butt and around the corner. She got sassy when she was stressed and anxious. And maybe a little immature, too.
She’d been organizing and creating checklists for almost two days. She kept going through her mental list of her people, adding Yrene and Chaol, Fenrys and Connall, Gavriel, Vaughn...Check, Check, Check. More people she’d had contact with, but no one to talk to. At least she knew where they were. Another thing to check off the list.
Elide hung the calendar up above her work area and booted her computer system up. She wanted to triple check that it all would work seamlessly whether she added her laptop in or not.
“Cable there...check… settings….check...audio detect...check…check, chickity-check…. check yo self before you wreck yo self….Chickity-check yo self before you wreck yo self….Yeah, come on and check yo self before you wreck yo self!”
Head bobbing and hands scratching imaginary DJ setups while she waited, Elide was so lost in her thoughts that when the video chat tones went off and startled her, she tipped over in her chair as she reached over to answer the call without thinking.
“Uh, Elide? You okay?”
Shit! Of course, she actually would have answered the dadgummed thing. As she fell over. On a chat with Lorcan. …
Lorcan watched with amusement as Elide closed her eyes and took a deep breath, righting herself in her seat and glaring at him.
“What do you want, Salvaterre?”
He struggled to keep his face straight, biting the inside of his cheek before answering. He honestly had no real reason for video calling her on Sunday evening. They weren’t even supposed to talk until after lunch tomorrow, but he found himself making up excuses anyway.
“I was just testing a new set up and wanted to make sure everything worked right. Just lucky I guess that you were available to be my guinea pig,” he teased. She regarded him suspiciously, like she didn’t quite believe his story.
“Well, you tried it. So, bye,” she quipped and began to reach to end the chat. She still looked flustered. She probably didn’t want to admit she’d been doing the same thing to her system and that’s why she could answer. And that he’d seen her wipe out at the beginning of the call.
“Hold on there, sweetheart. I have to make sure the audio is calibrated just right and that we don’t get dropped.” He adopted an arrogant tone, knowing it’d irk her and keep her on longer.
“Don’t call me that,” she hissed.
He chuckled, reading her face just fine over the screen, noting her little tells of irritation, how her nostrils flared when he got under her skin.
“First,” she continued, gritting her teeth, “you can run diagnostics with the system, you don’t need me. Second, you’re a morning guy. Why are you on here at 6 on Sunday night? Heck, we could even be doing this tomorrow before we dive in.”
“Oh, come on, El. You know as well as I do that testing systems works better with another person. And what else is there to do since we’re all kind of stuck? Perranth officially cut off travel on Friday until the tox results come back on that dinner.”
“I know… it’ll be another week before we know if we can even go back to the office,” she whined. Then she looked caught off guard “Wait… you’re in Perranth? I thought you’d be in Doranelle at headquarters?”
Damn. She didn’t know he was back in the country, then. “Rowan wanted some security updates done at the branch office here, so I stopped off on my way to the summit. Then the shit hit the fan, so I’m here until they ease up.”
“Oh. Well, that stinks...Wait, if you’re only in for that, are you seriously set up in a hotel right now?”
“Gods, no! That’d be the worst. I’m at the cottage,” he replied, referring to the second home Rowan and Aelin had purchased. Since everyone traveled so much, Rowan had set up an office for the security firm in that house. It was also a frequent place for layover flights, pit stops, and long weekends, making it a nice retreat while he was stuck.
“You didn’t seriously pack your coffee, the grinder, and the whole system with you…” She said, staring at him flatly.
“Damn straight. I wouldn’t be able to live on that cheap single-serve crap Aelin keeps here. Must be why she’s always so bitchy…”
“Hey! That’s my sister-cousin you’re talking about! And I doubt it’s the coffee’s fault...” Elide jumped to defend Aelin, even while chuckling and agreeing. She knew A could be a real piece of work.
Lorcan smiled, eager to keep up their banter. He was relaxing and it felt nice to be back to how they were. “El, I-”
“Well, it’s late and I’ve gotta get a few more things done before tomorrow. Bye, Salvaterre.” Elide rushed as though trying to stop him from speaking any more and ended the chat abruptly.
Lorcan stared at the screen, trying to catch up. He hadn’t even said anything. Had he? Even she was laughing at his rather mild jab at Aelin. Sure, A got on his nerves sometimes and their history wasn’t always good, but she was family.
He dropped his head back, rubbing his face with his hands. He let out a frustrated growl before stalking to the kitchen. Maybe there was some whisky somewhere. ....
Elide slumped over the desk, banging her head as she whined. She had to stop. Their banter was nice. She wouldn’t admit to craving it yet, though. She wasn’t so stir-crazy to go that deep into navel gazing… yet anyways. She needed distance. She had to remember that Lorcan was a self-absorbed, arrogant, dill hole. She had to remind herself of that. She brought back memories of That Night to reinforce those thoughts as her heart tried to betray her again.
She’d been upset and angry at another jerk who’d tried to get in her pants and wasn’t mature enough to handle no. Sure, he’d been a fun date and was attractive, but she just didn’t feel that urge with him yet. So she said no, he’d ghosted for a week, and then sent a text saying he thought they should see other people.
Aelin had handed her a glass of wine and cheered her up a bit, making her laugh over horror stories from past dates. Dating was hard. Elide was a catch. Guys were dumb. Then they started talking about Lorcan. “El… have you thought maybe you and Lor should try it?”
Elide had stared open-mouthed, trying to formulate a response coherent enough. Was she that obvious? She thought she hid her feelings pretty well, but… And Aelin recommending it?
“Come on, E, you two are great together. And I know you. I’ve seen you staring at him several times. Just, think about it? And that you’ve got options. This loser isn’t worth any more tears.”
“True,” Elide had agreed. “Maybe I’ll ask Lorcan for coffee or something later. But tonight I just want to finish this wine and snuggle Ellie.”
Just then, Lorcan walked in and ruined it all.
Right. He ruined it. No going back.
Elide left her mental checklist behind in favor of repeating bad things about Lorcan to herself. Even as she pointedly ignored the realization that talking to him helped she felt more grounded than she had earlier. She also ignored the realization that she’d probably fall asleep convincing herself that his laugh earlier was grating and not the best sound she’d ever heard.

17 LinkedIn Ninja Tricks Experts Haven’t Taught You Yet
Have you ever wondered if you’re missing some of the functions within LinkedIn that would help your business?
Additionally, it’s hard to keep up with all of the changes and functionality on social media sites. It’s something that my team and I do daily to make sure we stay up-to-date on all changes and LinkedIn tips and tricks.
In this article, I’m going to share some of the best-kept secrets (old and new) that include some extremely advanced LinkedIn ninja tricks.
Each of these 17 LinkedIn tips are simple and easy to implement right away.
LinkedIn Ninja Tricks: 17 Little Known Features on LinkedIn
1. Accepting and Replying to New Connections
LinkedIn has made it easier than ever to accept a person’s connection request quickly and easily. And while you can quickly hit Accept to any new connection request and move on to other tasks, this won’t help you get to know or build a relationship with your new connection.
The key benefit of using LinkedIn, other than to find your ideal clients and display authority on your topic, is that it is the perfect place to build a relationship with your connections and ideal clients.
I recommend that you take the few extra minutes and reply personally to every connection request that you decide to accept. And of course, click Ignore for those you don’t want to add to your network
1. Start by going to your My Network All the requests will appear in a box at the top of the page.
2. Click Manage all, located in the top right corner of the box.
3. Do NOT click Accept yet.
4. If the person has sent you a personalized connection request, it will display a See more link in the box. Click this to see their message.
5. Click the Reply to NAMElink located at the bottom of their connection request and reply appropriately to their connection request.
6. If they did not send a personalized message, you would merely see the Message link at the bottom of their request.
7. Click this and send them a note to thank them for connecting. Be sure to personalize it appropriately.
8. Once you have replied to them, you can accept their request.
9. Now you can tag them if relevant and if you have a Sales Navigator account or are using a tool such as Dux-Soup.
2. Individually Promote Each of Your Services in Your LinkedIn Experience Section
Click edit button to change this
Want to get more visibility to a new or existing service you offer?
You can do this relatively easily with Position Grouping in your profile’s Experience Section.
Go to your experience section and click on the + icon in the top right corner to add a new profile experience.
In the popup box, you want to add the name of the service in the Title field.
This next part is vital. You MUST select your current company in the Company field and add the same start date to Present as the date you have for your current company. Then check the “I currently work in this role” box.
NOTE: Make sure you unselect the “Update my industry” and “Update my headline” boxes.
Next, provide a description of the service in the description box and attach any relevant rich media (videos, PDFs, images) that will support the service such as testimonials or informational PDFs and videos.
When you are done, click Save.
You can do this for as many of your services as you want. But don’t get carried away, stick to the ones you really want to feature.
You can then rearrange the order of your new services under your main company experience by hovering over that experience and grabbing the four-line icon in the top right corner and dragging it into the order you want. To edit an experience, click the pencil icon.
Check out the step-by-step video I created to show you how to do this.
3. Send Free Messages to LinkedIn Premium Members You Are Not Connected To
You can send free messages to LinkedIn Premium members that have turned on their Open Profile setting. You can quickly identify these members, as they will have a gold LinkedIn icon on both on their personal profile as well as beside their name in the search results.
To take advantage of this, when you are searching for prospects using the Advanced Search, look for the Open Profile badge beside the name of the prospect you are interested in. Once you find a good match, click through to visit their LinkedIn profile. At the top of their profile in the highlights section, click on the Message button, to send them a message.
4. Free InMails to LinkedIn Group Members
Take advantage of your ability to send up to 15 free messages per month instead of expensive InMails, to people that share a LinkedIn Group in common with you.
Start by searching for your prospects using the Advanced Search. Once you find a good match, click through to visit their LinkedIn profile. At the top of their profile in the highlights section, you will see any groups you share, if any.
Click on your Mutual Groups to see all the groups you share listed. Click on one of the groups.
On the top right side of the group page, click on the link with the number of group members. This will take you to the page that lists the group members.
On the Member page, type their name into the search box. This will bring them up in the search results. You can then click the Message button to the right and send them a message.
Remember that you only have 15 messages to use collectively in all of your groups each month and that unsent messages don’t carry over to the next month. Note the limit includes messages sent directly from your group to your 1st-degree connections as well so avoid sending messages this way to people you are already connected to.
5. Determine the Approximate Size of Someone’s Network on LinkedIn
Have you ever wanted to figure out how many people were in someone’s LinkedIn network when they have over 500 connections? Perhaps you want to determine just how connected a particular individual is, but LinkedIn refuses to give you the details.
There is a way to get a pretty good idea of how many connections someone has with a simple trick that most don’t know about.
Go to the person’s profile page.
Scroll down to their Articles & activitybox
You will see the number of followers they have listed.
This lists a person’s total number of followers which include all of their 1st-degree connections plus anyone who has chosen to follow them. In most cases (except perhaps well-connected influencers) this gives a reasonably accurate number, especially if they don’t have any or very little recent activity.
6. Boolean Search on LinkedIn
Similar to Google, most people have no idea that LinkedIn search allows the usage of modifiers to help you get even more targeted results. This makes finding your ideal prospects on LinkedIn highly effective and very targeted.
If you want to find results containing an exact phrase, use quotation marks to enclose the phrase. For example, “LinkedIn Trainer.”
AND
If you want to search for LinkedIn profiles that include two separate terms, use the word AND in capital letters between both terms when doing your search. For example, “LinkedIn Speaker” AND “Social Selling Speaker.”
OR
If you want to combine the results of two separate search terms, type OR in all upper-case letters between one or more terms. For example, “LinkedIn Expert” OR “Social Selling Expert.”
Parenthetical
This is where things get interesting. You can combine multiple modifiers to get even more complex search results. For example, LinkedIn AND (Speaker OR Trainer).
NOT
Want to exclude results that contain a specific term? Use the word NOT in upper-case letters between terms you want excluded from results. For example, “LinkedIn Speaker” NOT Coach.
7. Use Saved Searches and LinkedIn Will Automatically Send You Leads
When you have found a particular search criteria that provides highly targeted results for you, you can save your search using the Save Search option. You can see the save search feature on the Search Results page on the right side near the top of the page.
LinkedIn will send new leads to your inbox based on preferences you decide and the search criteria you specify. You can also click on the number in brackets beside the search name to go directly to your results. This is a fantastic feature, be sure to take advantage of it.
8. Search for a Specific Position Within a Company
If you have a list of prospective companies and are looking for a specific position or title within the company, go to the Company’s page and click on the See all employees link, located below the company name.
This will take you to LinkedIn’s Advanced Search page.
Then, for example, if you are looking for a VP Sales, type VP Sales into the keywords section. This will bring up a list of the employees with VP Sales in their profiles. To further improve your results, if you are looking for new prospects, only search for 2nd and 3rd-degree connections.
9. Use the People Also Viewed Feature
If you find a good prospect, be sure to check out the People Also Viewed feature down on the right-hand side of the page (some people may have this turned off). This can be an excellent source to locate other similar prospects.
10. Adjust Your Privacy Settings
While the feature mentioned above (#9) can be handy for you to find prospects, it can also work against you. This displays your competitors to your prospects that visit your profile.
Don’t let people leave your profile to view your competitors. Go into your Settings & Privacy page. Click on Privacy in the top navigation area. In this list locate Viewers of this profile also viewed and make sure this is set to No.
11. Find Warm Prospects
If you post articles to LinkedIn Publisher, you can see those who have liked, commented on or shared your article.
These are people who have some idea of who you are and have had a positive interaction with the content you create. Some could be ideal prospects you have not yet connected with.
Everyone who has commented on your article can be found at the bottom of the article. There you can reply to each person as appropriate.
You can access the list of people who “Liked” your post at the top of the article. Simply click the number beside the “thumbs up” icon.
You can easily see who you are not connected to (your 2nd and 3rd-degree connections). Click on each person you are interested in, to go to their profile, and see if they are someone you want to connect with.
If you are already connected, and they are an ideal prospect, do a little research about them first, before sending them a message. Thank them for their like, comment or share and perhaps ask them a question related to the topic or recommend another article that they may be interested in.
If you are not already connected, and you think they might be a beneficial connection, go to their profile and send them a personalized connection request, thanking them.
You can also find who shared your article by clicking on the View stats link, underneath the article title. This will open a pop-up. Click on Reshares to see the list of people who shared your post and their comment about it.
Take a couple minutes to thank each person for sharing your article. Again, you can easily see who you are and are not connected to. Take the time to reach out with a personalized connection request to anyone you think you want to connect with.
12. How To Reorder Your LinkedIn Skills
Have you ever received endorsements for useless and off-topic skills on your LinkedIn profile? This used to frustrate the heck out of me (especially as only the top three are visible) until LinkedIn allowed for a way to re-organize the endorsements in your list.
Click the pencil icon in the Skills & Endorsements
Click on the four lines icon located to the right of each skill, to move it up or down in the list.
Arrange your skills in the order you want them to appear. Remember that the top three are visible when people scroll through your profile.
To remove a skill from your list, click the trash can icon located to the right of that skill.
Click “Save”.
That’s it!
13. Follow Up Messages
Create a lead generation message sequence that’s designed to build relationships and move conversations offline. Don’t just collect connections…build relationships. Social selling on LinkedIn can be highly effective when you use my proven system The LINK Method.
14. Get Your Account Unrestricted
Has LinkedIn restricted your account and banished you to LinkedIn jail? The most obvious sign is that you are now required to know the email address of every single person you try to connect with. This happens when five people have clicked the “I Don’t Know This Person” link that pops up in the bottom left corner of the screen after ignoring your connection request.
If this happens to you, you can reach out to support and ask for forgiveness to have them remove the restriction.
15. Personalize Connection Requests on Mobile
Today, many people are connecting on LinkedIn from their mobile devices while they are out of the office. But far too many people are still hitting Connect right on the person’s profile and sending the default connection request, rather than taking the time to send a personalized connection request.
You can send a personalized connection request from your device by tapping the More… button on a person’s profile page.
Next tap on Personalize Invite.
Create your personalized connection request in 300 characters or less and hit send.
16. LinkedIn’s Find Nearby Feature
Have you ever wondered if there was an easy way to connect with like-minded individuals at events or other business-related locations?
Now there is.
You can set your Find Nearby feature on, so that when you are in your LinkedIn Mobile app and are on the Find Nearby page, LinkedIn makes it easy for you to find and connect with others who are close by and are also on this page, looking for other people to connect with.
To access this feature, go to the Network page. Tap the Find nearby button at the top of the page in the middle.
If you haven’t already, LinkedIn will ask you to turn on your Bluetooth for this feature. You must enable this, to use the feature.
Now, when you come to this page, LinkedIn will let you know when other nearby people are looking to connect. This is especially effective when you are attending business-related events.
17. Embed Social Media Posts into Your LinkedIn Publisher Articles
Make your LinkedIn Publisher articles more interesting and engaging by including social media posts from Twitter and Instagram, embedded right into your article.
Start by finding the social media post you wish to include.
You want to grab the actual link to this post, not the embed code. To do this, just click on the down arrow in the top right corner of the post and click on Copy link to Tweet. This will automatically save the link to your clipboard.
Next, go to your publisher post and click on the box with the plus icon on the right side of the screen (where you want to add the social media post). Click the Links option.
Paste the URL into the space provide and hit enter.
The live, continually updating social media post will now appear within your article.
