Have you ever seen I, Frankenstein? If so, what did you think of it?

How would I describe my experience with I, Frankenstein? Well...

Once I went on a really long road trip to New Orleans and hadn't eaten anything but a shitty motel breakfast in 24 hours and I was dying to get some food. My friends and I stopped at a Taco Bell on our way through Mississippi because we decided we wanted Mexican.

Taco Bell is not real Mexican food, in fact, it barely resembles anything Mexican or food but when you're hungry and you want tacos it's good enough and I ate all of it without complaining.

That was on par with my experience with I, Frankenstein. It's not good, it doesn't actually resemble the thing I want, but I was so starved for Frankenstein content I watched the whole thing and didn't totally hate my time with it.

Spooky films 2023

I started with Young Frankenstein this year, so I'm starting this year's Spooky Season with Mad Science.

I, Frankenstein

Ok, so this isn't a *great* movie, but it is entertaining. It feels like it's in the same universe as Underworld, which is probably deliberate. Its Angels vs Demons, with Frankenstein's Creation being caught in the middle. The question of whether he has a soul seems to be at the heart of it. His origin story is thankfully just backstory. We start with him on the ice, with a little bit of narration to give us the bare bones.

Cue the big fantasy epic!

Gargoyles are actually angels! Fighting the Demons plaguing the earth!

Nice cast, too; Aaron Eckheart, Bill Nighy, Miranda Otto.

It's fun.

Also the Spanish translation of the title is worth a giggle.

I know it wasn’t considered a box office success, but I was just thinking fondly about the 2014 movie I, Frankenstein. There were some really neat themes! Gargoyles as a race of sort of pseudo-angels fighting demons! Frankenstein’s monster in the modern day! Cool transformation sequences! The epic message about souls! Now I’ve hyped myself up and I wanna rewatch it.

Shout out to Doctor Terra Wade. One of the world's most respected electrophysiologists. Gets hired to basically be a necromancer and has zero qualms about it. A two-hundred year old man made out of corpses LITERALLY crashes into her office and the first thing she says to him is ‘hello’. Adam tells her about a secret war between demons and gargoyles she asks if he has brain damage. Saves his life by pretending she needs to dissect him for research purposes. Straight up asks Adam about his body count. Tries to stab a demon. No one else is doing it like her.

Inspired to create

Small post

I plan on creating a novella after finding myself inspired by @bandages-andobsessions post about their unique idea of a Frankenstein reimagining.

I have a short prologue penned that has expanded on a snippet I made for this prompt originally here.

The plan going forward is to try and release a chapter or two every fortnight. I will definitely need to do research on things like medicine and science of the time; as well as to actually find some way of consuming the original piece in some fashion.
