You know, I think the thing that bothers me about owls is that even amongst birds of prey, they are in a league of their own.

We have lots of hawks and eagles in Oregon. I’ve seen them hunting. The world doesn’t go quiet for them like it does for owls. The bugs still make noise. Squirrels and other birds flit about, as if the hawks/eagles are just a part of life.

Nothing makes noise when there’s an owl around. Rodents hole up. Birds don’t chirp. Even the insect activity drops. There’s just this... feeling of oppression when an owl is around that hawks and eagles don’t have. Like, obviously there’s a reason owls are universally seen as harbingers of doom and this is it.

Owls tell me your secrets. Why are you so scary.
