7 Unusual Tourist Attractions in London
Tumblr media
There is so much to see in London beyond the London Eye and Buckingham Palace. Naturally, London’s most popular spots are worthy of a visit and should not be overlooked. But, when staying in Hyde Park Corner hotels you can look forward to exploring some of London’s unusual tourist attractions.
London’s Smallest Police Station
London’s Smallest Police Station is located in the corner of Trafalgar Square near the Strand. It’s around the size of a phone box with an old-fashioned large lamp on top of the unit and narrow slits for windows. There is just enough space for one police officer to stand inside; it’s usually locked but you can peek inside.
Italian Gardens
Hyde Park is always popular but few tourists know about the Italian Gardens. These are located in the northern part of the park, far from the boating lake. Conceived as a gift from Prince Albert to Queen Victoria, the plot consists of fountains and statues. Grab an early breakfast in Bayswater London and then swing by first thing when the park is tranquil and the light is perfect for photography.
London’s urban farms
There are several little farms dotted around London where you will meet livestock and learn about modern-day agriculture. Farms are free to visit but donations are always appreciated and you can dine at the complex cafes or pick up a small souvenir. London’s urban farms include Vauxhall City Farm, Spitalfields City Farm, Stepney City Farm, and Surrey Docks City Farm.
Westminster Cathedral
Not to be confused with Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral is a Byzantine-style house of worship that sought inspiration from the mosques of Istanbul. You can visit the nave for free to ogle the splendid marble and mosaics. Do not miss this cathedral while staying at a hotel near Buckingham Palace.
River or canal kayaking
You can kayak either on the River Thames or on the Regent’s Canal. London Kayak Company conducts guided river tours in Central London with their night kayak being particularly special. On the other hand, Moo Canoes operate from Limehouse Basin and Hackney Wick from where you can self-paddle the canal ways.
Filming locations of London
Countless films and TV series have been filmed in London. One of the kookiest free things to do in London is to track down the spots where your favourite films were shot. Find William and Spike’s flat at 280 Westbourne Park Road from Notting Hill. Visit the Old Naval College at Greenwich and see where the finale of Thor: The Dark World was made. If you’re travelling with kids, lure them out of Central London hotels with triple rooms with the promise of seeing as many Harry Potter filming locations as possible.
Hampstead Ponds
Head to Hampstead Heath on a hot afternoon and you can plunge into natural ponds for a spot of wild swimming. There is a small fee to pay and you’re best booking a slot in advance. Take your pick from the women’s pond, men’s pond, or mixed pond. The water is deep so novice swimmers and children must take extra care.

EXCUSE ME!!!!! between this promo shot, the blooper reel, and the new kanthony season 3 dance scene we are getting FEED for the 2 year kanthony anniversary!!!! I’m loving it and am obsessed with everything we have gotten. Literally speechless it’s all too good.
Tumblr media
I will literally never get tired of seeing these two dumb sluts be happy in love. Never. They can pry this happiness from my cold dead hands!
The way he looks at her!
The way she smiles at him like “You’re so stupid why am I obsessed with you?!”
Lord and Lady Bridgerton came back to London to show everyone how happily married they are and everyone’s completely forgotten that they were ever not married looking at these images.
This is how they look all the time.
This is how they look leaving the modiste or the tailors.
This is how they look walking Lady Bridgerton’s dog in Hyde park while they keep an eye on his younger sisters.
This is how they look tucked away in the corner of a ballroom together long after the other gentleman have disappeared for brandy and cigars.
It seems impossible to believe that last year everyone thought Lady Bridgerton so… severe. She’s intimidatingly confident, yes. Forthright nearly to a fault but she’s gentle and kind more so.
And how could Lord Bridgerton ever have been thought a terrible Rake who devastated the nerves of young ladies everywhere? His eyes haven’t left his wife in months it seems, and his smile is so blinding.
They’re perfectly suited to one another.
(In other news I was glad to see some shots of Corgis being corgs and causing mayhem in the bloopers. That’s their natural state. Stubborn little loaves.)

[ Visitors pass by some of the iconic sculptures of prehistoric life within Crystal Palace Park. Photo by Richard Baker. ]
"When the Crystal Palace and Park opened in south London in 1854, it was an instant sensation. Visitors came from far and wide to see the giant glass structure that had been rebuilt there, bigger and better, after the Great Exhibition of 1851 in Hyde Park. Wide-eyed spectators wandered freely through Egyptian and Medieval Courts, delighted in high-wire circus acts, and were transported by a 4,000-piece orchestra. Tucked away in a corner of the vast gardens that fanned out from the palace, past sweeping terraces and more fountains than even at Versailles, was a smaller but no less ambitious attraction. Scattered across several islands in the middle of a lake stood three dozen life-size sculptures of prehistoric animals, including several dinosaurs up to 30 feet long—the world’s first attempt to model them at full scale. The Crystal Palace Dinosaurs were the work of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, a natural history artist who, aided by some of the leading scientists of the day, had dreamt up a grand experiment in visual education, bringing to life the “dry bones or oddly shaped stones” found in the British Museum and introducing the masses to the burgeoning science of paleontology. By reconstructing Britain’s long-extinct animals, he hoped to “render the appearance and names of the ancient inhabitants of our globe as familiar as household words.” The palace burned down in the 1930s, but, almost 170 years after they were crafted, most of Hawkins’ original sculptures still stand sentry in the park. Today, they’re mostly famous for being wildly inaccurate. With few complete fossils to work off, Hawkins had to use his imagination and the advice of comparative anatomists to breathe life into his models, which, in addition to four true dinosaurs, also depict prehistoric mammals, reptiles and amphibians. As a result, the sculptures look suspiciously like many modern-day creatures. “People kind of scoff and giggle, because they look so wrong today, but at the time they were really cutting-edge,” says Bob Nicholls, a paleoartist who, through careful study of archival images, recently reconstructed a lost sculpture that had disappeared from the park sometime in the 1960s. His tapir-like model of Palaeotherium magnum, an animal we now know looked a lot more like a horse, was unveiled in July and now stands among Hawkins’ own surviving creations."

A daily(?) kinktober Tumblr fic. Will post to AO3 on American Thanksgiving, 2023.
Harry is a K9 unit Auror. Draco is the Ministry Kennelmaster. How could that possibly lead to anything?
Tags: collaring, top Draco, sensual pet play, touch starved Harry, bathing, shaving, rescue dog feels, other tags TBA, maybe dark draco ending?, maybe werewolves?, definitely coming untouched though, just blasting rope man
--
Chapter One
“I assure you, Auror Potter,” drawled the Patronus, speaking even before it found its full form, “there is nothing wrong with your partner.”
Malfoy’s tone was patronising, as though he were telling Harry that the monsters under his bed weren’t real, and to go back to sleep.
Next to Harry’s desk, his ‘partner’ had managed to catch his tail and was currently gnawing on it with nothing short of ardour.  K9 Auror Wurst, aka RottWurst, clamped down on his fluffy tail so hard, Harry swore he heard a crunch.
The bright fog condensed into a direwolf the size of a modest pony.  It was the perfect symbol for Draco Malfoy.  A pale, leggy, sharp-toothed relic of another time.
“And I assure you,” Harry spat, “Kennelmaster Malfoy, that this mutt’s fucking touched in the head.”
The mutt in question was eighty-plus pounds of Rottweiler-poodle abomination.  He looked like a St Bernard had dug into an avalanche, missed the humans, and hit a thousand-volt power line instead.  The curly white fur on his belly was caked with mud, and his brown muzzle still had bits of grass clippings on it.  The rest of him was black, save his brown eyebrows and speckled ears.
“He keeps alerting to sex magic, not dark magic.  It’s fucking embarrassing.  Dragged me across Hyde Park.  I had to use a Confundus on him to get him back to the office.”
The direwolf was so still that Harry blinked twice to make sure the shape wasn’t burned into his retinas.  It was a bloody showboat of a Patronus.
It was so bright that it brought out the dinginess of Harry’s office.  The yellow carpet had a pale brown trail between the door and Harry’s desk chair.  The corners of the ceiling had cobwebs, and the baseboards held an unhealthy amount of dust.
The fresh dog piss on the floor didn’t help things.
“I mean, he’s not worthless,” Harry added.  “But Robards said he can’t reassign him to Vice.  That he doesn’t have that authority.  So it must be you who has to do it.”
It was a little risky to bypass Robards the way he had, contacting Malfoy directly.  He probably should have made an appointment with his assistant or something.
But he’d been angry, so he’d pulled an interdepartmental priority Howler out of his desk and sent it.
There was probably a DMLE protocol for contacting a member of the Wizengamot.  There was a DMLE protocol for everything but wiping his arse.  Actually, they probably had one for that, too.
Harry blinked again.  His eyes were dry.  He was on hour seven of a twelve-hour shift.  After this, he’d get another coffee.
The direwolf shifted its weight, then leaned back, hindquarters high, in a deep stretch.  Its paws spread out in front of it.
Harry wondered if Malfoy was actually stretching.  And what that might look like.
It’d been years since he’d seen Malfoy in person.  Just in the papers, and only in the background of Wizengamot photos.  He’d been called to his Wizengamot seat the day after his thirtieth birthday, having met the minimum age.  They hadn’t called Hermione to hers until she was thirty-two.  She’d die mad about that.
The direwolf laid down, then yawned.
Harry yawned.
Wurst yawned.  Then farted.
Harry thought to check the time.  2:30 AM, according to his wristwatch.  He’d been on the clock for fourteen hours.  Not seven.
“Shit,” Harry said.
He’d woken a member of the Wizengamot at 2:30 AM.  And an important one.
The direwolf sighed and tucked its muzzle under its paw.  Harry held his breath.  Maybe Malfoy would fall asleep.
Maybe he’d doze off, and he’d think he dreamt he got a Howler in the middle of the night from a burnout beat cop at least six rungs below him.  Maybe.
The direwolf sighed again, then drifted away like will-o'-the-wisps on the wind.
Maybe Malfoy wouldn’t report this.
Maybe.
Maybe Robards wouldn’t kill him.
He drummed his fingers on his desk.  If he did get written up, it’d be his sixth this year.  Two of them were for failing to meet dress code, but the shaving regulations were stupid, and the hygiene one was just weird.
Still.
Wurst looked at him.  He looked at Wurst.
Nothing would happen.  His talk with Malfoy had only lasted a few seconds.  He’d think it was a dream.
It would be fine.
“It’ll be fine,” Harry told Wurst, ignoring the sweat on his palms.
Wurst’s nostrils flared, and then an ivory envelope slid under the door.  It sat on the grimy carpet for a moment, then folded itself into a swan.  With a few wingbeats, it landed on Harry’s desk and unfolded itself.
Inside was a business card.
Draco L Malfoy Wizengamot Member, Kennelmaster Warminster BA13 4SH UK
“Shit,” Harry said.
He flipped the card over.  On the back was an appointment date and time.  Tomorrow.
“Fuck.”
Robards was going to kill him.

The Harkers' day trip to London
With my best attempt at finding contemporary or near-contemporary photos, paintings and illustrations.
The train to London:
Tumblr media
"We came back to town quietly, taking a 'bus..."
Tumblr media
"... to Hyde Park Corner."
Tumblr media
"Jonathan thought it would interest me to go into the Row for a while"
Tumblr media
"We got up and walked down Piccadilly"
Tumblr media
"I was looking at a very beautiful girl, in a big cart-wheel hat, sitting in a victoria..."
Tumblr media
"Outside Guiliano's"
Tumblr media
(I can't find a photo - contemporary or modern - of Giuliano's, a jeweller at 115 Piccadilly, but this is nearby)
"We walked a little further, and then went in and sat for a while in the Green Park."
Tumblr media
They would have returned via Paddington station:

And back to Exeter St David's:
