HTTYD continuity: Are there two Hiccups?
First of all, thank you for all the likes and reblogs on my ‘there are two Hiccups’ post. It’s seriously blowing my mind how popular it is. So, if you read it and thought “what? There are two Hiccups?”
Well, no… but actually yes. I wasn’t being literal (I know, on the reading comprehension website? Shame on me), but the thing is, I’m actually kind of right? Just look at these examples from the wiki:
The entire series is based on the six main Dragon Riders moving away from Berk for over a year. However, in commentary, Dean DeBlois has said that they all lived on Berk between the first two films. The second film’s Art Book elaborates on this saying that they all had responsibilities on Berk which prevented them from leaving.
In other words, as far as Dean is concerned, RTTE never happened.
The series also focuses on the six main Dragon Riders exploring lands outside the Archipelago together, while both Dean and the second film’s Art Book state that only Hiccup and Astrid ventured outside the Archipelago as they were the ones drawing up Hiccup's map. The other four stayed much closer to Berk.
Again, we have a direct contradiction between what Dean claims happened pre-HTTYD2 in his (head)canon, and what we see in RTTE.
Numerous other "dragon riders" are introduced throughout the series, when the second and third films themselves stress how Berk is the only community who rides dragons. Dean elaborated on this during a convention panel explaining that that’s why Eret and Drago were so alarmed when seeing Vikings riding on dragons, and why Eret assumed Valka was one of them.
In an interview with the series creators Art Brown and Douglas Sloan, it was mentioned that the show was originally meant to have 4 seasons, spread out over the span of a year and a half, leading up to the second film. Following the many clues and mentions regarding the passage of time within the story, the last 7 episodes of season 4 were supposed to have happened during the same summer as the film. However, when seasons 5 and 6 were ordered into production, the show writers had to carry on with the timeline they had set up, which inevitably lead to the series continuing into negative time; going past the second film.
In other words, the last two seasons of RTTE aren’t meant to take place before HTTYD2 - they take place after it. If there’s better proof that RTTE is on its own separate timeline, I don’t know what that is.
The majority of film characters are portrayed severely out-of-character in the series compared to the films and film-verse media; most arguably Hiccup and Astrid. Aside from having similar appearance and even voices, their personalities and behaviors in the series portray them as drastically different people than their film counterparts.
I would argue that they are more in character during RTTE, especially Snotlout, the twins and Fishlegs. Isn’t it amazing what being fleshed out characters instead of comic relief can do? But there you have it. RTTE!Hiccup is portrayed as drastically different to his film counterpart. When push comes to shove, there are two Hiccups.
Or, you know, three, if we count the one from the books 😂.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to lamenting the fact we live in the timeline where THW exists and not the timeline where the writers of RTTE were allowed to make a full length conclusion movie.

Vote HTTYD!!
Hiiiiiii, back on my campaigning bs. Here's why you should vote for How to Train Your Dragon in the @book-was-better tournament!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Disclaimer btw I'm not saying the first movie is a bad movie or bad story as it's own separate thing -- I'm saying it's a bad Adaptation of a book series -- in that it does nothing to Adapt the book series into a film series, just uses the name and goes off to do it's own thing. Other explanations and analysis of this aspect under the "how to train your dragon propaganda" tag in the tournament itself.

do you do something like our world's "trick or treating" during Dreadfall? Trick or treating is an activity where you go door to door, say "trick or treat," and the person who lives there gives you cool stuff! normally, it's sweet stuff, but sometimes it's small toys or other fun stuff.
Yep! It’s mostly the village children that enjoy that enjoy that part of it. It started out as a bunch of kids putting on Flightmare costumes and going from door to door to scare people, but most of us found it more amusing than scary so we’d laugh and give them candy. Over the years it’s just become another tradition, and nowadays kids have been dressing up as other dragons, too. I don’t really have candy on me though, so usually I just give them simple little dragon figurines I carved out of wood. (Toothless also likes to jump out at them when they knock on the door, just to give them a good scare.)

The biggest disappointment of Nine Realms is theirs no extra content, we don't get height charts or wing-spans. No slick fancy png renders, it just feels like it's not as cared for in budget but outside of it as well. I want in depth detailed species information on the dragons we get
The guide book that comes with the game is actually really nice with slick rendered dragons and hugeee hidden world lore drop that not only related to Nine realms but the entirety of the franchise as well. it got me super excited.

Astrid, it’s 6:30 am.
Not me thinking about this line from her in Edge of Disaster, “You know all those times early in the morning when it's still dark outside, and I'm out by myself on Stormfly?”

Httyd request Hookfang x fem!monstrous nightmare
Oh boy, more dragon x dragon time!
Yandere! Hookfang with Monstrous Nightmare! Darling
Pairing: Romantic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Female Darling, Obsession, Monstrous Nightmare courting, Dragon x Dragon, Possessive behavior, Violence, Mate mention, Dubious/Forced relationship.
Tumblr media
What is cool about this is in the series we can actually see how Monstrous Nightmares act towards the opposite gender.
Especially with Hookfang during RTTE.
Hookfang most likely found you by chance, maybe you were calling for a male of your species?
It's said in the wiki that female Monstrous Nightmares can easily call males to their area.
I feel this is similar to the "Total Nightmare" episode in RTTE.
Except instead of protecting your eggs you may need help from some other danger.
A danger Hookfang defends you from due to your call.
Snotlout no doubt panics when he realizes Hookfang has gotten attached to a female of his species.
It's happened before but Snotlout can tell Hookfang is actually very interested in you.
The male Monstrous Nightmare often heads to your nest to gift you sweet smelling flowers and food like... rats-
He often acts proud and shows off towards you, clear acts of courting.
You appreciate his protection... but don't entirely reciprocate the courting.
Snotlout tries to regain Hookfang's attention but it doesn't entirely work.
Hookfang only responds with aggression towards his rider.
Snotlout is envious of you but may try to befriend you.
Hookfang is jealous when his rider approaches you, touching your nose softly and stroking your horns.
Hookfang may even try to snap at Snotlout to back off during his courting.
Hookfang's obsession over you isn't like any other Monstrous Nightmare courting it seems....
Even if you don't entirely reciprocate, Hookfang fights off any other male dragon around you.
He becomes incredibly possessive of you, often nudging you with his head in an attempt to show interest.
It seems Hookfang will continuously grow aggressive until he can gain your favor.
How long until it's no longer him just being snappy?
How long until he just decides to torch the area around you to gain your favor?
Will he cast his rider aside forever?
Can Snotlout manage to separate his dragon from you?
Unfortunately... who knows?
Even if you flee, Hookfang has your scent in his nose.
He'll find you... his perfect mate.
Eventually his courting will hit a peak...
You have a feeling Hookfang won't take no for an answer.
