Book 4 continues with the dragon abuse by having Snotface whip the Saber-tooth Driver dragons into obedience because they're supposed to take the trainees up the mountain and don't seem to want to listen to Hiccup.

Makes this at least the third book with obvious dragon abuse in it. Can't remember if I read it in book 2 or not, but I know it was in book 1 and 3.

Does anyone else find that the more they understand a movie the more they feel like crying on every viewing?

Like I never used to cry at Kung Fu Panda or the first httyd or Megamind but now that I’m older and I fundamentally understand the characters and themes and plot and can appreciate the music, lighting, animation, fight choreography, character nuances and just all that jazz there are certain scenes that’ll make me choke when they don’t even warrant tears.

tbh i don't think there has ever been a single character more Trapped by The Narrative than Hiccup in the httyd books. Like, he KNOWS what he's doing is dangerous, he doesn't WANT to be some great hero, but he never actually considers doing anything differently. Completely and utterly bound by obligation to help, burdened by the fact that he's the only one who knows to act or how to act in times of crisis, forced into impossible choices where there was no real second option for him to take, not him. Trapped by his character and the people around him, and the ever cyclical nature of fate and human nature that in the end he chooses to break. Again and again, he picks the smallest dragon of the group, he sticks up for the underdog, he frees the trapped dragons, in the cage and in chains on the forest floor, even when it becomes his own undoing. Self aware of the way fate plays with him, and powerless to try and go against it.

#there's a monologue somewhere in book 4 after the doomfang eats the potato and it haunts me #Also READ THE BOOKS.
