HP WWI OCs: Livia and Hestia Prewett

Livia and Hestia are sisters who attended Hogwarts at the beginning of the 20th century. Livia became a healer after graduation and Hestia felt it was unjust to leave all muggles to their own devices and joined efforts to secretly aid them during the war. They're born in 1892 and 1894 respectively.

I've seen everyone's awesome OCs for this era and I wanted to contribute, though these two are pretty minor OCs, really more like plot bunnies. So if you need to name drop some random Hogwarts classmates or you need a healer to show up, Livia and Hestia are more than happy to help!

I tried to find FCs who were not in use, at least not for this era but damn you guys have so many OCs that I got a bit overwhelmed. Let me know if you want me to change either of the FCs, I have other options😂❤

WORLD WAR I AND THE WIZARDING WORLD – A MASTERPOST

1. The Basics:

The Muggle World:

World War I (28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918), often abbreviated as WWI, was one of the deadliest global conflicts in history. It was fought between two coalitions, the Allies and the Central Powers. Fighting took place throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Pacific, and parts of Asia.

The Allies, or the Entente Powers, were an international military coalition of countries led by France, the United Kingdom, Russia, the United States, Italy, and Japan against the Central Powers or Central Empires of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. [X]

The Wizarding World:

During the war, British Minister for Magic Archer Evermonde was responsible for passing emergency legislation forbidding wizards and witches from getting involved, in an attempt to prevent mass breaches of the International Statue of Secrecy. This did not prevent thousands of wizards from discreetly aiding Muggles wherever they could. Minister Evermonde's position drew the public condemnation of Wizengamot member Henry Potter, which caused a minor stir at the time. Henry's outspoken pro-Muggle views were one of the chief reasons for the Potter family's exclusion from the Sacred Twenty-Eight. [X]

2. The Wizarding War Effort:

Most witches and wizards were not directly involved with the war, though their lives were certainly affected by it to varying degrees. While the Ministry passed legislation to forbid wizards from participating in the war, it did not neglect it completely. In addition to the witches and wizards who aided muggles illegally, there were several different programs started by the ministry, such as the Owl Air Force*, Intelligence operations by the Auror Department, and Magizoologist operations (Like Newt Scamander and the Ukrainian Iron Bellies at the Eastern Front).

(*The Owl Air Force might have been an illegal operation but we've chosen to make it part of the Ministry. Canon isn't clear on which it was.)

The Auror Department:

This is part of WW1 verse, and not mentioned in canon.

Volunteer aurors were trained to join muggle armies to make sure there was no illegal usage of magic among the ranks. They were also tasked with gathering intelligence, tracking down dark wizards (and other dissenters), and even infiltrating and spying on the Central Powers.

3. Wizarding Politics in the 1910s

People of Note:

British Minister for Magic: Archer Evermonde, in office 1912-1923

Evermonde took office in 1912, after the mysterious passing of his predecessor Venusia Crickerly. Some certainly suspected foul play, but nevertheless Evermonde enjoyed the trust of the population enough that he managed to push through several legislations, including the ban of wizarding involvement in the First World War.

Head of The British Auror Department: Willard Hartford (WW1 verse canon)

The Hartofrd family had established itself as a family of aurors a couple of generations ago, so it was only natural for Willard to pursue the career. He became Head Auror in 1911. He is the boss of Ares Gaunt and Lunas Avery, among others.

The Supreme Mugwump: Gala De Lange (WW1 verse canon)

Gala served as the Dutch Minister for Magic before becoming the Supreme Mugwump. She is known for her neutrality and insistence upon the non-involvement of wizards in the muggle conlifct.

Head of The German Auror Department: Anton Vogel (WW1 verse canon)

During the war Vogel served as the head of the German auror department. He later became the German Minister for Magic and the Supreme Mugwump. He is the father of Alexej Kavinsky. Vogel's motivations are shrouded in mystery and eventually he becomes involved in the plans of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

The General Political Climate: (WW1 verse canon)

Across Europe, many witches and wizards were not happy with the war and saw that it was the muggles who were to blame for such chaos and violence. There was a rise in blood-purist ideology, as well as isolationism and anti-muggle sentiment.

Minister Evermonde wanted to keep out of the war as much as possible, and this, if anything, was a reflection of many of his other policies too. He did not wish to effect change, instead he was a traditionalist who was comfortable keeping up the status quo. While he was not overtly blood-purist, he did not do anything to speak for muggleborns, squibs, or any of the groups classified as "creatures".

Mistreatment of minorities & Blood-purism:

As we see the Ministry still being a cesspool of bigotry and corruption in Harry's time in the 1990s, it can be safely assumed that things were not better during the beginning of the century. The radical organization TOWER fuelled the vitriol towards muggles and muggleborns, creating a scapegoat for all the frustration and anger.

TOWER

The Transnational Order of Wizards' Exposure Right is an anti-muggle organization dedicated to toppling the British Ministry of Magic but it operates across all of Europe. They use any means necessary to advance their goals and their existance is known only to few. Their power lies within their secrecy.

Corrine grew up in Wales in a small and humble home with her widowed father, who encouraged her to be the best version of herself. He never once judged her desires, and was her biggest supporter, even when society asked him to forsake her.

A Scottish woman, she was from a bureaucratic family that expanded their business to southern Wales and were looking for a match for their daughter to solidify their grip on the business, and found it on Scottish-Welsh Cathal Lovette. They clicked instantly and had a daughter, Corrine, before Felicia caught uterine cancer and passed when Cory was three years old.

A serious but soft-hearted man, he was reserved with those whom he didn't know and, since his wife passed, closed-off to everybody save his daughter Cory. He was protective of her and was reluctant to send her to England in the gist of the war, but he knew that limiting his daughter would only make it worse. He supported her, even when she came back with child with the child's father being dead.

Mack and Cory's relationship was odd and complicated from the start. He was one of the many people who underestimated her, and bantered often with one another.

Yet, they were drawn to one another like magnets, and, in a way, somehow understood one another. Their late nights drinking and talking (also bickering) soon escalated, and while the feelings were there, they couldn't give them a name.

When Merrick died, Cory was in shock. It was such a shock, she retreated from the war early, and, four months later, found out she was pregnant when she fainted during an event, which shocked her. She considered for a while terminating the pregnancy, but every doctor she went to advised her against it due to its advance, and that she'd definitely die as well. She decided to have the baby, and on the 15th of August 1917, she gave birth to her son, Griffin Oren Lovette.

Cory's open for a second love interest!

Friends: Viscountess Primrose Somerset, Countess of Harrendale

Second cousin of her mother, when she heard that Corrine was having trouble, she sent her men to retrieve Corrine and gave her a nice house within her estate's territory and provided her protection.

She helped her fight her in-laws from taking her child from her, and won the case. Griffin grew up with her children and was treated equally to her children to the point where Corrine made her godmother of the child. Both women remained good, close friends.

Rivals: Josephine Brume (and the whole bunch tbh)

Cory never once heard good things of Josephine, and when she came into her life to try take her child from her just because he was Mack's, she instantly hated her.

Both women clashed and argued a lot, and Cory, backed by Primrose, prepared a case against her and went to the Brume mansion to threaten to take them to court if they were really hell-bent on taking her boy from her.

Unfortunately (or not...) Josephine's husband also passed away, and the remaining Brumes gave up, promising Corrine to never reach out to her or her child and, while she regretted that she had to die for her in-laws to see reason, she wasn't saddened by his death, no matter how cruel others would think she was when reacting to her in-law's death.

Trivia

One time, she fell in love with a deaf boy who lived in her village, so she learned ESL to declare her love to him. They dated from ages 14 to 17 when he moved to the US.

She can speak five languages which she learned in St. Paul's: English, Spanish, French, German and Welsh

She's autodidact, which means that she taught herself math, biology, arithmetic, physics, geography and to man some woodwork, as well as tarot and can understand by ear twelve languages: Mandarin, Russian, Danish, Greek, Portuguese, Basque, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Japanese and Kurdish

During the war, she taught herself Braille and taught soldiers who had been blinded the language

He had a mongrel dog before starting school, whom he loved very much. His father was wealthy so he got used to having luxurious things around him. From early on Alexej was raised to despise the muggle-community and he didn't see muggleborns as part of the Wizarding community. Religion: Not religious

Relationship with him: As a child Alexej wanted to please his father and followed his orders and wishes. During his Durmstrang years Anton didn't think his son was strong enough and wasn't pleased with the close friendship he had with Fiete. He started to see Alexej as a weak link which the teenager desperately wanted to prove wrong.

Anton wasn't a very strict or serious father but rather bantered with his son and complimented his success if he saw such. Alexej liked spending time with his father despite wanting to prove himself worthy and the two were close in his youth. After graduating, Alexej joined the AM movement that worked in Germany under Grindelwald's alliance. His father was secret supporter of the movement but being a politician he had to ensure that his name stayed out of it, so Alexej started using his mother's last name. After Alexej killed Anton's friend Adalmar Nachtnebel in 1916, he didn't contact his father until the end of the year. His father was pleased that Alexej had joined TOWER but later found out that he didn't actually value this alliance either. Anton was disappointed and Alexej didn't contact his father after the war. Later Anton became the German Minister for Magic but claimed that his son had died during the war.

Sydney Barlow @gaygryffindorgal Face claim: Rami Malek

Relationship with him: Alexej saves Sydney's life by shooting Nachtnebel instead of executing Sydney when he was told to. Alexej lets him go, leaving him with Nachtnebel's wand. The two meet again in a small town while Sydney is looking for his company and Alexej is on a run. The two spend time together and get to know each other a little but eventually Alexej leaves for his own adventures. They later meet again and Sydney gets his chance to save Alexej's life when Alexej gets shot. to be continued...

► Enemies

His father, Adalmar Nachtnebel, Ren Godfrey and the whole of TOWER, The whole of AM, Grindelwald's Allience, and some of the students of Durmstang. Adalmar Nachtnebel: Nachtnebel was a member of the AM and Alexej's father's good friend. Nachtnebel put a lot of pressure on Alexej and tried to shape him into a ruthless soldier. Alexej never liked him and after he was forced into crimes against the muggle community under Nachtnebel's command, he started to resent him. When Sydney Barlow escaped from the AM base after being taken there as a prisoner, Nachtnebel commanded Alexej to shoot him after the two found him from a near by forest. Alexej chose to shoot him instead.

Ren Godfrey: Alexej joined TOWER (Transnational Order of Wizards Exposure Rights) after leaving AM. Ren Godfrey was one of the founding members of the said group of dark wizards. Alexej claimed to be loyal to TOWER but he actually joined because of Lunas Avery. His real goal was to get Lunas out of the blackmailing situation he had going on with Ren. Eventually Ren finds out the truth about Alexejs true alliance but he has more anger towards Lunas than Alexej.

During his studies in Durmstrang, Alexej was close friends with Klara, Kateryna and Fiete. Klara, Kateryna and Alexej all came from similar backgrounds and shared the same type of values. Fiete was different, being a half blood and coming from a less wealthy background. He didn't have strong opinions against muggleborns and he was much kinder than Alexej. Still he became his closest friend who he secretly developed feelings for. The three would often claim that Fiete was a pureblood to avoid controversy among other students. This bothered Fiete, but loving his friends he let them keep their perfect picture. The group would often pair up during balls and they spent holiday breaks together being practically inseparable.

During his seventh year Alexej managed to gain few enemies in school after sharing information he was not suppose to. This lead to the boys attacking him and Fiete while the girls watched trying to stop it from happening. The fight ended with Fiete's death. After his passing away it was hard for the group to spend time together as just a trio and it took a long time for them to get close again. Lunas Avery @cursed-herbalist:

Alexej meets Lunas when he's posing undercover as an auror to snoop details of the ministry's agenda for the war. They became good friends and Lunas is a big reason why Alexej starts to question his beliefs. Eventually Lunas finds out his true intentions and Alexej has to flee and go back to his AM group. After Alexej leaves the allience he decides to find Lunas again and because of this he ends up joining TOWER. His true intentions are to help Lunas and possibly gain pardon by doing so.

Ione Avery @cursed-herbalist:

Ione and Alexej became friends when Ione was visiting Lunas in Berlin. They have similar struggles and get along well. They have a playful sibling like relationship. He wants to protect her.

Ares Gaunt @gaygryffindorgal:

Ares worked for TOWER at the same time Alexej was there. They had few missions together and Alexej admired Ares's way of handling the situation which was different from the other members of the group. Alexej wasn't aware that Ares was actually an auror working for the ministry.

Zedric Faust: Zedric and Alexej went to Durmstrang at the same time but they were not friends. Alexej thought that Zedric was annoying. Though he was polite to Zedric, he called him Kartoffel (potato) behind his back. After graduating Zedric and Alexej both joined AM and were often paired up together from Zedric's request. Usually Alexej did all the work while Zedric took the credit. After the war Alexej ended up defending Zedric and telling the truth about him not taking much part on the actual things that AM did and being more talk than action. While he never liked Zedric, he didn't feel that the man deserved the worst kind of sentence. The two found mutual respect for each other for surviving their youth and became actual friends.

Colm O'Shea @unfortunate-arrow Alexej got to know Colm through his friend Ione. The two were also in the same company. After the war Alexej stayed good friends with the couple. Alexej was a regular guest to their house.

Linus Sullivan @unfortunate-arrow Linus and Sydney were friends during the war and shared the same company that Alexej was in. He got to know Linus after getting closer with Sydney and the two stayed friends.

Maritza Krum Alexej and Maritza attended Durmstrang at the same time but were not friends. He met her again through his connections with the British Ministry while she was working for the French Ministry of Magic. Later he got to know her also as Linus's wife.

Cayetana Narváez @endlessly-cursed Cayetana and Alexej met because of her connection to Lunas and later became friendly. *more to be added*

Andrey Belikov @gaygryffindorgal Alexej and Andrey knew each other through Klara and once spent a night together though neither remembers that much of the occasion. The two stayed friends.

Anthony Vallen @kathrynalicemc

Andy was the scientist who was investigating the TOWER guns that Alexej,Lunas, Kit and Ares were sent to find during his time working for the British Ministry of Magic. He later also knew Andy through his relationship to Andrey Belikov.

Professor Alecai Kainen - He is Andy’s favorite professor at Oxford who teaches the secret wizard students. He is hired when the war starts to lead a team to experiment with magical weapons created by TOWER (@savetheundoneyears) so they can learn to disarm them and make cures for any curses or hexes or effects. He refuses the suggestions of some of the most brilliant minds of the wizard world and instead insists on hiring his students for his team. He does it so they can gain experience, however he starts to regret it later when the dangerous work starts to take his students lives. He always tries to put himself first and protect the students. He does eventually die doing so. FC: Martin Short

Audry Kainen - She is the daughter of Alecai and is one of the first women students to attend Oxford lectures without chaperones when the rule is lifted in 1914. She strives to be more than just Professor Kainen’s daughter and tries to prove that she belongs and that she didn’t get there simply by being his daughter. She does love him though and he is very proud of everything she does. He knows she is capable on her own without him. Audry and Andy have a friendship that starts out rocky (as you do when two powerful intelligent people think they are both right) but they end up great friends. She reminds Andy of his sister and she also likes that he isn’t one of the many guys who wants to sleep with her or doubts her because she’s a woman. FC: Jessica Biel

PERSONALITY

Child: Growing up he was afforded a lot of luxury as the Vallens had a lot of money. He also would follow his sister around everywhere and loved when they would play. He was also curious about everything and was given the best tutors and he quickly displayed natural intellect and was gifted like his sister. Once his sister discovered her magic and got her letter, he also wanted to explore magic and soon after he got his own letter. This catapulted his confidence as he knew it was rare for two magical children to come from muggles.

Teenage: During Hogwarts, his success in his studies built his ego even further. He was proud of himself, his intelligence, his family, and magic. He also started to experiment with his appearance as he started adopting a more feminine look. Wherever his sister would go, he wouldn’t be far behind. They became really close as their parents expected them to attend all the fancy rich parties they threw at their estate. They would stick together and gossip and whisper about all the guests as they giggled and joked about people.

Early Adulthood: Andy followed his sister to Oxford University after they graduated Hogwarts. They both were hungry to learn more and soon discovered Oxford University home to both a muggle and secret wizard population. They had the best of both worlds to study. Andy started to feel lonely and sad as he was naive and egotistical and did not talk to anyone. He thought they weren’t like him enough to be worth getting to know them. He did not really mean for it to be rude, but he just didn’t think about it. Once the First World War breaks out, he starts to grow up a bit more and learns to separate himself from his rich and gifted upbringing and he gains friendships in the team founded by his wizard Professor that experiments with magical weapons and whose goal is to disarm and find cures for them. He ends up watching half of his team die horrible deaths in accidents with the weapons.

Late Adulthood: After the first war, Andy finishes his studies. Instead of becoming a professor at Oxford or Hogwarts (he’s offered many jobs from both), he decides to try to help the less fortunate receive education. He moves to a small country town and teaches classic literature to muggles. He tries to escape the wizard world a bit because of his experience with dangerous magic and may have PTSD. When the Second World War starts, he is offered a job again from the wizard world which he immediately turns down. He no longer has the ego and ambition to be a hero. Instead, he keeps teaching and also protects his students. He would also shelter and help refugees escape while making sure children still receive safe education and not be forced to fight.

2023 Wishlist

This is just a bunch of ideas for threads that I’d love to explore or further explore, so if anything sounds half decent or you’d be interested in something, let me know. I’m more than happy to tweak things to fit other people’s muses and preferences to suit. 

Would definitely love more threads with pre-WWI Jonathan and someone’s muse becoming friends / close eventually leading to them reuniting after the events of Vampyr in which Jonathan is now an Ekon. 

I have a basic verse for the zombie / apocalypse genre, stuff along the lines of the Walking Dead, Resident Evil, Z Nation, Black Summer, the Last of Us, etc where Jonathan travels and offers his medical assistance to those who need it while also having to deal with the steep decrease of blood to sustain himself. I should probably mention that I haven’t seen TLOU show yet but I do plan to once all the episodes are available, I’m still happy to write from it, and if there’s anything I need to know that differs from the games, just let me know. ^_^ ( I do also have Roanoke Gaming’s video on the new Ophiocordyceps Infection saved in my watch later playlist so I can know the details of it better )

This one’s pretty simple, but Jonathan becoming close to someone and later having to admit that he’s an Ekon.

Would love more situations where Jonathan meets hunters / vampire hunters.

Him meeting other species, whether it’s other variants of vampire, or other beings such as werewolves, witches etc. Although only vampires are covered in Vampyr, I do go with the idea that there’s other stuff out there too.

Shipping with Jonathan, while he’s not really someone who would fleetingly jump into bed with a stranger, he’s definitely still shippable. He does put his studies and later his work first so a relationship wouldn’t be the first thing on his mind, especially as he doesn’t believe he deserves to be loved after becoming an Ekon, but this doesn’t mean it’s a big no-go.  

I do also have an HP verse where Jonathan was in Ravenclaw and later after becoming an Ekon teaches muggle studies at Hogwarts. More info here.

Throwing Jonathan into other eras, genres etc. I’m a big fan of crossovers, so I’d love to throw Jonathan into other stuff, whether he suddenly ends up there somehow or we discuss him being a part of it. If it’s a game / show / movie etc that I don’t know, I’ll do my best to read up on it or watch / play it to get a decent taste of it.

Time travel shenanigans is also something I love, or even just exploring Jonathan in other eras since he’s immortal and can naturally be set anywhere from 1918 onwards.

the first version a lot more new ocs and plot points have been introduced to this verse since annie published the first powerpoint, so we felt like it was time for an update. this was a labour of love and now it's here! a tongue-in-cheek intro to the world war I era, featuring many of the ocs created within the fandom! obviously this is from mine and annie's point of view, and while we did look through the tag for all the ocs, we don't know all of them as well as we would like, so we winged it😂 many of the nicknames are based on what we've called these characters when they didn't have names yet/if we couldn't remember their names. some of the jokes and references might be incomprehensible to anyone but us but i hope not all of them, lol. if we got something wrong, let us know!

The Colm-Ione-Zedric “Love Triangle” | HP WWI Era

So, the partner and I were talking about Voldemort and how he should have gotten the Mel Brooks treatment, and then I off-hand mentioned that it was disappointing he wasn’t canonically known as Magic Hitler. That got me thinking about the place of Hitler in a work of such supremely awkward racial ideas, and I realized I couldn’t remember him being mentioned at all. Not even like a “He was definitely NOT a cool wizard and we don’t like him”, which is the base for a work which is incorporating historical eras in that have.... Problems.

Either they have nothing to do with your worldbuilding (which you should say so we readers know where we are on the alternate history sliding scale) or they do and everyone feels awkwardly about it. Use it for character growth! How does that change their views on the cool new world they got dragged into? Are the feelings clearcut or complicated? Do they even know how they feel about it? Were they not much of a history person and don’t care either way? It it has or could happen, you can use it for character development.

Back to HP. I did a single search to look at the Harry Potter fandom wiki, and managed to get a single tangential reference to Hitler. The presence of an interview with a German General who was (in real life) part of Hitler’s first coup would imply that there was a Hitler echo in the HP-verse. (I’d like to interject here that Erich went on to regret his hand in helping Hitler, and went to his grave refusing to be involved further with him, (Which Hitler ignored because dick) sure that history would show Hitler completely fucking over Germany. Erich still promoted and pioneered antisemetic thought and specifically blamed Jews for the state of Germany after WWI. People are complicated)

Where this starts getting awkward is that the interview is in a newspaper prop in one of the Fantastic Beasts movies, not an offhand mention in one of the books. So.. Why wasn’t one of the most.... *impactful* people brought up in casual observation and comparison? Why not in the last few books where everything goes bug nuts bonkers?

Partner and I talked about that for a bit (I put forth the theory of JK being a Hitler apologist) and then forgot about it immediately. I actually went and googled it later to find that fanpage, which is as much effort as I want to put in for now. I then mentioned that to the partner and they made it click in my head. She didn’t want to mention and compare Hitler to Voldemort because Voldemort is a pathetic wannabe who never actually accomplishes anything. He has no personality of greater strength than wet dish rag, and being overshadowed by Hitler would.... really reflect poorly on her worldbuilding and writing.

Of course, that would all require, like, conscience thought, so it’s up to you and your personal beliefs of her competence.

As a kid, Lydia found out through Joel's mother that he really liked sweets. Although she was particularly indifferent to candies, she made a show in front of her parents so that they would opt to purchase some every now and then. Eventually, it became a code for her and Joel to meet whenever a new package of chocolate or caramels arrived in the kitchen, which she would then share with him. After he went off to war, she continued to send them and was eventually caught by her father. The small package of caramels that she was intending to forward never reached him, but she could not bring herself to eat them.
