Feeling Forrest Gump
What major historical events do you remember? As of this writing, I’m 49. I feel like for much of my life – and that of my entire generation for that matter – we didn’t have a lot of world events thrown at us, until we were adults. But here’s some of the bigger ones, and how I remember them The death of John Lennon – I’m reluctant to include the death of a rock star on here, but John Lennon…

Your top 5 favorite Mclennon quotes?
Hi Anon, thank you for asking! The following aren't quotes I'd construct into any kind of 'proof' (whether I'm into this or not is another set of footnotes, which I'll spare you), but quotes that illustrate that John and Paul's relationship was fascinating and intense, and puzzling to themselves and others (incl. yours truly). 1.) “Meeting Paul was just like two people meeting. Not falling in love or anything. Just us. It went on. It worked.” — John Lennon - The Beatles by Hunter Davies
2.) “Lennon had attitude, and, taking his lead from Lennon, McCartney could be similar. At times, they reminded me of those well-to-do Chicago lads Leopold and Loeb, who killed someone because they felt superior to him. Lennon and McCartney were ‘superior human beings’.” — Bob Wooler in Mark Lewisohn’s Tune In
3.) “John and Paul paired off - only to find themselves stuck together for life. For John, Paul was the boy who came to stay; for Paul, John was the song he couldn’t make better” — Rob Sheffield, Dreaming The Beatles
4.) TELL ME WHO HE IS. Early song by Paul McCartney, included in The Lyrics (2021). Written in the late 50’s/early 60’s, according to the caption. (photo of journal page)
Tell me who he is Tell me that you’re mine not his He says he loves you more than I do Tell me who he is
Tell him where to go Tell him that I love you so He couldn’t love you more than I do Tell me who he is
5.) John Lennon's word association list from 1976 New York: great Elvis: fat Ringo: friend Yoko: love Howard Cosell: hum George: lost Bootlegs: good Elton: nice Paul: extraordinary Bowie: thin MBE: shit John: great
BONUS TRACK: “I had signs that the group was gonna break up, because… I mean, I think really what it was, really all that happened was that John fell in love. With Yoko. And so, with such a powerful alliance like that, it was difficult for him to still be seeing me. It was as if I was another girlfriend, almost. Our relationship was a strong relationship. And if he was to start a new relationship, he had to put this other one away."— Paul McCartney (1985), link to interview here
PLAY IT BACKWARDS: "LONDON (AP) — John Lennon wrote vitriolic comments about fellow-Beatle Paul McCartney in a picture biography of the famed pop group, providing new evidence of the tensions between them, the Observer newspaper said Sunday. [...]
"Lennon marked almost every one of the 76 pages with corrections and comments, including one that the Observer took as an indication the group already was experimenting with drugs in the 1960s. [...]
"In an entry noting McCartney’s marriage to Linda Eastman, Lennon crossed out “wedding” and wrote “funeral”, the Observer said. [...]
"But in a final tender moment, the Observer said, Lennon wrote under a photo of himself with McCartney: “The minutes are crumbling away.” (full article.)

Tonight is the 43rd anniversary of the murder of John Lennon.
Of course it will always be sad to think about and revisit, but I wanted to share these links of coverage from that night because it’s pretty fascinating stuff and makes you think about media’s role in our lives, among the obvious more darker things.
Here is a report about the moment that the world found out what had happened…and that only happened the way it did because of a twist of fate of an ABC employee that happened to be in that hospital at the time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6zcRPp8zVg
Here is a late night TV report
http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/abcs-1980-broadcast-john-lennons-death/story?id=35653276
Here is a scan of NYC radio that night…this is really fascinating stuff, serving as a reminder that there was no cable tv news or any other form of mass media reaching people about this world-shattering story for several hours.
https://youtu.be/pC-COpl9hJA?si=X8Rd2kdxVOz24gHi
By the time the next night’s evening news came on, the shock had sunken in, and here is how Walter Cronkite, who was long considered “The Most Trusted Man in America” (and who had famously broke the news of JFK’s assassination in 1963) reported the story.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yeiu7A41Tlw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bnB0oBtggY
One aspect of the story that people couldn’t grasp back then, and to me serves as a preview of our modern TMZ culture was the reaction to Paul McCartney’s reaction.

I would hope that most people can understand how shock and the stages of grief works…..as well as having cameras in your face all the time.

December 8, 1980
John Lennon autographed an album for a man in the morning. At 10:50 that night, as John and wife Yoko returned to their apartment in The Dakota, New York City, the man came back and shot Lennon four times in the back. Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:07 at Roosevelt Hospital in New York. A sobbing Yoko cried “Oh no, no, no, no… tell me it’s not true,” and was led away in shock.
Just two months after his 40th birthday, John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman, who remained at the scene, reading his copy of The Catcher in the Rye and read it until the police arrived to arrest him. He confessed it was for the fame. he remains in jail in 2017 – Yoko Ono attending every parole hearing.
Much of America learned of the tragedy from ABC-TV, which was in the midst of airing an NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. Announcer Howard Cosell, who had interviewed Lennon years earlier, announced the news of the murder: “This, we have to say it, is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy, confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City. John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the West Side of New York City, the most famous perhaps of all of The Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival.”
When asked why he decided to target Lennon, Chapman said he couldn’t resist the fame that would come with the crime. “That bright light of fame, of infamy, notoriety was there,” he said. “I couldn’t resist it.”

‘We were like the Fifty-Ninth State in Britain,’ John Lennon would reflect. ‘We had all the Doris Day movies, and Heinz beans. (We all thought they were English .) I was brought up on Americana.’
John Lennon interviewed by Howard Cosell, quoted in Tune In

JOHN LENNON’S WORD ASSOCIATION FROM 1976
It seems that a fan named Stuart mailed Lennon six pages of interview questions in 1976, and in the midst of his unofficial retirement during that period, Lennon had nothing better to do than answer them!
Basically what we have is a word association exercise where an interviewer (usually a psychiatrist or psychology) says a word and the interviewee says the first word that comes to mind. John’s responses were very interesting. In my opinion, the fact that he called Paul “extraordinary” is very telling. It’s a shame he considered George as “lost”, but that probably is an honest response taking their relationships at the time.
Among the highlights: New York is "great," Howard Cosell is a "ham," and bootlegs are "good." Elvis is "fat" and David Bowie is "thin." He also tackles all the Beatles and Yoko Ono: Ringo is "friend," George is "lost," Paul is "extraordinary," and Yoko is "love."
Any thoughts? ✌️& ❤️

In The Rock 12/9/1974: John Lennon stops by the announcer’s booth on Monday Night Football. Howard Cosell briefly interviews Lennon, even asking if the Beatles would reunite. Off Camera, a WTF moment: also visiting the booth, Ronald Reagan explains the rules of American football to Lennon. No, seriously. Google it! #JohnLennon #RockHonorRoll

Holy shit, that lennon stuff took me out. I'm glad i experienced it though. That had to be the ultimate shock if you were just someone who loved music.
I'm sorry that it makes people sad, it certainly makes me sad. I just thought that young people should see how it was experienced.
