Honestly, the marketing for the SBTB reboot has been pretty poor in that its advertising didn’t make it clear what the target audience was, in my opinion. There’s also just reboot fatigue going on right now in general I think.

Also, it being on Peacock doesn’t help it any because it’s locked behind their paywall if you don’t have a cable subscription that NBC made a deal with (like Xfinity customers). Then add in people not wanting to pay for yet another subscription service, the lack of other premium content on the platform drawing people to it aside from extended episodes of The Office, etc. it just faced a huge uphill battle generating interest or any sort of fandom.

That being said, NBC seems to be pretty forgiving about content that isn’t generating a huge amount of traction, so as long as the cast and crew wants to renew their contracts I don’t see them canceling it quite yet.

The marketing does seem to have been really lax this year. For season one, I saw advertisements everywhere I went online but for this one I didn’t even realize the second season had dropped until a few days after the fact. (Granted, I am a laughably small sample size.)

As to reboot fatigue, I think you’re absolutely right about it, and it’s a shame because SBTB2020 is one of the better 80s/90s reboots out there. I would even go out on a limb and say it has the potential to be The Best One, depending on how the next season or seasons go. (Knock on wood; it deserves a solid four.)

Maybe at some point they’ll do something like removing the pay wall for the first season to pull in more viewers.

In any case, I definitely have anxiety about this one getting canceled before its time. Then again, Mr. Mayor got a second season and I don’t know anybody else who watches that. 😂

I know a little of how you feel! Xfinity was supposed to cancel my service, they have records of that request, but they didn't cancel it and then the autopayment was $85. Then they billed me again for the next month! But luckily I turned it off for that time. Good luck to you, it's only today, over a month later that I got the refund/credit back. Fingers crossed🤞

synopsis: a team of homicide detectives solve murders, with a healthy dose of personal drama on the side. this show is, obviously, pretty dark and intense and i would slap a whole bunch of trigger warnings on it. on the other hand, i personally was perfectly able to handle it and in fact absolutely loved it, and i’m usually a giant wimp, so make of that what you will

where i watched it with english subtitles: amazon prime (under the title “thou shalt not kill”)

note that it’s on the pbs masterpiece channel of amazon prime, which costs an additional $5 or $6 per month to subscribe to. but you get a 7-day free trial, and i easily finished the available episodes within 7 days, cancelled my channel subscription, and didn’t have to pay anything extra

also note that amazon prime lists it as 4 seasons, but in reality this is the full 2 seasons each split up into 2 parts

other places it’s available: not sure of anywhere else with english subs (it miiight be on xfinity x1 but i don’t have that myself so i haven’t checked), but if you know italian, the entire show is available for free on raiplay. it just doesn’t have subtitles in even italian there, let alone other languages

luisa spagnoli (tv movie, 4 hours)

synopsis: based on a true story. a woman in WWI italy buys a chocolate shop and ends up running a large-scale chocolate corporation. plenty of business drama and romantic drama. this movie honestly touched my Heart and i would highly recommend it

I can't believe it's 11:30. If both feels way later than that and we're earlier. I'm tired. But I'm not as exhausted as I think I would be normally. Today was a really good time. It just feels like it was 6 days in one.

I slept okay last night. I woke up at 8 and got ready to go to the museum. I got there a couple minutes late because of traffic but it was no big deal. I setup my project and the kids came basically on time. It was the largest group ever had for in the neighborhood but they were really good kids. I had 21 but four of them were special needs and so they didn't really participate and then they just kind of walked around the museum when we were on tour. So I had 17 and that was fine. It was nice. They were good kids and paid attention and did all the things I wanted them to do. The teachers and chaperones we're just on point and it was great. Whenever I needed help they were right there. It was awesome.

I finished up there around 12:30. I had agreed to do an extra half an hour but that made me late to work at the school. Not that it actually matters besides my paycheck but not a big deal. I'll make it up somewhere else. But since I already knew I was going to be late I stopped at Chipotle and had nachos.

While I was eating my nachos I solve two ends of the spectrum of police officers in Baltimore. I saw traffic cops wearing fluorescent vests and I saw Baltimore Police in camo. So the most visible and the least visible. Very strange. You're in the city why are you wearing camo.

I missed the bus right as I was going up the hill. But another one was about five minutes away so it was fine. The blue line runs all over the place so I don't know why I ever bother worrying about the next bus. It'll either be there in the next 2 minutes or it will take 45. No in between.

I got to the school at 1:30 and got to work on some prep for the day. There wasn't a ton to do. When I went and got the kids I have them come right upstairs with Chelsea and had everyone bind a book. So there's only like three or four left. So that's excellent. And the kids were mostly really good today. We did have one thing happened at the end of the day that wasn't cool. But Chelsea really laid down the law and their were tears but I think they got some understanding.

Right before the end of the day though me and Damien took Otto my clock and turned him into a graduation Furby. I had really wanted to get a graduation for me to bring to Charlotte's graduation tonight but it just didn't happen. And that's not what I really need. It's just a black and white wearing a little hat. And Otto is black and white so we made him a little graduation cap. And then Damien told me he wanted to make a certificate. And I didn't know what he was talking about but I told him go ahead. And he brings me a little scroll with a little ribbon on it because he made a diploma. He didn't know that's what it was called that's what he made. Absolutely precious.

All of the kids got picked up real early and I was able to make the early bus. So I got home before 6. I took a shower and I got changed. I redid my makeup and fix my hair. I packed my purse up and then I called a car.

My driver was really nice and we had a really nice conversation all the way to the tap room. And James was outside. And it was so nice to see him. He looks so handsome. His hair was all done up and his shirt was really cute.

And I had a great night. I helped set some stuff up. I took the plastic off stuff for his mom. I said happy birthday and happy graduation to his sister because both happened today! So congratulations to James's sister Charlotte for graduating from Hopkins with 9 cords. I think that's what they're called. The colorful ribbons that they put around their necks when they have a bunch of extra things. Because she's incredibly smart. And she's very nice. And tonight was a really good celebration.

I got to meet a bunch of change this family and family friends. I got to tell stories. And I got to meet Hopkins grads that thought I was fascinating and that was cool. I wish I would have had more time to learn more about them but they kept asking me questions. I had a really nice time. We got to go on a brewery tour and there was a bunch of rats back here and we all thought I was hilarious. Not uncommon because you know wheat and barley and things. I don't know why other people were surprised by it. It's Baltimore. I'm sure everything is clean enough in the actual process of beer making.

I had a really good night though. At the end of the night James mom told me to take as much stuff home as possible. So I got three plants and two plates of food and both the Diet Cokes that they bought for me. Someone accidentally crushed with my plants but I think I'm going to be able to save them. When I got home after my Lyft ride. Which was very good. The man was very very nice and we had a really nice conversation. I use chopsticks to take them back together. So I'm hoping with some babying I'll be able to save them

James stay behind to finish helping clean up. And I got home and got washed up. Brought all of my stuff inside. Put all the food in containers and opened up my new package. Which is my new weird pink robot dog. Which is absolutely incredible for a 14 year old dog. It rolls over and plays dead and it does guard Duty. I'm very excited to explore this thing a little bit more. The books that came with it has a basic function and an advanced function and there's a lot of things that can do and I'm excited that has autonomous features. Those are my favorite kinds of robots.

I'm going to get ready for bed now. I'm very tired. I have the next four days off and I'm going to finish my tooth sculpture and I'm going to finish my lesson plans. I'm going to go to the Xfinity store and figure how to cancel my internet because there is no option for that on their website or explanation on how to do it. I keep saying I'm moving. But it just wants me to move my service to my new place. James has internet I don't need to internet. But I will figure it out. But I'm hoping it's just a nice weekend. And I can take the bus long distances to stores I don't get to go to often. And James has his job interview on Saturday and then we have the whole afternoon together. And hopefully we'll move some more stuff to his place. And I'm just hoping it's a really good day.

Morality of Nudges

The context in which decisions are made play an important part in what choice people ultimately make. Many people fail to take action simply because of the inconvenience of the actions required to do so. A very powerful nudge that can influence choices is the default option. Looking at the organ donation sign up rates between Denmark and Austria highlights the default option’s power. Denmark has an explicit opt-in while Austria has a default organ donor sign up which resulted in 4.25% sign up in Denmark compared to 99.98% in Austria.

When companies follow Thaler’s libertarian paternalism with this nudge, there aren’t many moral issues as the user’s choice is preserved and companies are trying to promote good outcomes for them. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and inevitably some will abuse the system.

Examples of Abusive Nudges

Thaler himself has described his experience with a bad nudge from the Times of London. Wanting to read a review of his book in the Times, Thaler paid £1 for a one-month trial subscription. As is typical, he had to provide his credit card and was automatically enrolled in the full price subscription rate. This would not provide any issue at first since Thaler could simply cancel the subscription before he had to pay. However, the Times of London had a cancellation policy where in order to cancel one had to 1) notify the Times 15 days in advance, 2) call the Times on the phone during London business hours and 3) call on a not toll-free number. This example paints a very clear picture of how companies can very easily draw customers in with a teaser rate, hide the specifics in the fine print, and make it so inconvenient to cancel that readers will end up paying much more than the £1 that they intended to pay.

Another example of a bad nudge from a hidden default option comes from Comcast’s internet service. Comcast would like to provide an additional service to it’s customers by offering public hotspots in as many places as possible. One source of these hotspots is from customers homes, and it’s even pitched as an additional service:

However, this “service” is actually the default setting when you get Xfinity internet, meaning many user might unknowing be offering free wifi to the public. Further, while Comcast claims otherwise, tests have shown that the public hotspots slow personal internet speeds while also passing off the energy cost of public wifi to Comcast’s customers. Further, to disable this setting, customers need to first be aware of this and then be savvy enough to find the instructions to do so. Again this demonstrates how a default option takes advantage of people taking the easy right and opting in to something that is not in their best interest.

Leadership Question: How Do We Nudge for Good?

These examples highlight that there is an inherent risk with these nudges, and that they can be used to manipulate and take advantage of unknowing consumers. Even good hearted companies like the Times of London (who thought having customers call them would provide an opportunity for employees to explain all the benefits of the Times before canceling) can unknowingly be exploiting customers. This is why it is incumbent on leaders to ensure that these nudges are done for the benefit of both the company and the consumer. When we understand how these tools are used, this should simply make us more aware of what the results will be on the end-users so that we can ensure that this is truly working in their favor.

My Comcat-ic week without internet

Hello friends, let me share my tale of woe...

First, I live in an area with exactly 1 high-speed provider, Xfinity. That's right, Comcast has such a bad reputation among consumers that they had to rebrand their services as Xfinity. So, I literally have no option but fork over $80 per month for the basic cable-internet service. When things go wrong, they go Comcast wrong.

8 days ago, we had a storm. 60-70 mph wind gusts. Trees down, branches every where and our power pole damaged with lines on the ground. We logged reports with Comcast and the power company and waited for repair.

Two days pass, the lines go back up, power is restored. Two issues remain: first, the guy-wire is still out of the ground; second, the internet is not working. We have a busy weekend so we leave it one more day to Monday morning, when I call in to Comcast, they say the first appointment is Wednesday afternoon. So I take off work.

Wednesday, Comcast sends a Tech, Lemar. Lemar is great, not a joke, great. He listens to me and doesn't make me do pointless troubleshooting. He gets down to business and starts towards the pole. He pulls out a free-voltage meter. This meter senses current in the air/ground paths for energized wire/objects. It beeps slowly when there's nothing and rapidly when it senses current. The closer to the pole, the faster the thing beeps.

Lemar is concerned, sees the guy-wire floating free and approaches with caution. He extends his arm way out and touches the pole with the meter. It's not live, no current. He feels better. He sees the damage on the pole starts working.

Lemar gets out his ladder, starts climbing. He does more.meter checks and there's still current in the air, but nothing on the pole or the cables he's working with, so he proceeded to make some measures and, bless this man, tells me that the wire from the pole to the house is water damaged and is probably the source of our incredibly slow service. He says he'll replace it all. Awesome.

Lemar does what every parent should teach their children. He removed 100% of the damaged line, the old grounding, the connectors that aren't optimal. Then he prepares to run a new wire. Climbs up the pole, tests things again because this meter is beeping like mad. He gets to the top and checks the cable transmission line. It's HOT. Has current.

Lemar does the right thing, he gets the fuck away from that and regretfully informs me that he can't fix my service. I have to call the power company to get them to check the line and fix the fact that there is voltage on a line that's meant to be neutral.

Thanks Lamar! He's on his way taking all the trash with him.

I call the power company. The service lady says it could be UpTo a week before they get to my ticket. Great.

Thirty minutes later, a literal calvary from the power company is in my front yard. They must not have had anything to do because you don't need three trucks and nine people around one pole. But they get the guy-wire set and then come laughing to the front door.

They break it to us gently. There was a whopping 0.3 volts on the cable line. For perspective, your USB chargers are 5 volts. You can't even charge a damn cell phone off this line. But no charge because we needed the guy-wire.

No shade to Lemar. He had a tool that beeped, not a tool that read out the voltage. But there we are, on hold with Comcast trying to get a new appointment. I don't get through to an agent in time and have to go do bedtime with the toddler.

Thursday dons. We were 7 days since the storm. At this point, you're probably thinking all this is reasonable, where is the comcastic stuff? Well, now the fun begins.

I call 8AM to arrange a new appointment. I sit on hold for 20 minutes before I talk to a human. Human makes me recount the happenings. And then the line disconnects. It's 8:45. I have meetings, I call back in. I wait 30 minutes before I have to bail for meetings and a lunch meeting. I get back.

I spend another 20 minutes on hold before Gail picks up with her sweet-as-pie Tennessee accent and she gets my life story. She says first appointment is Saturday morning, or, she can put in an ER-safety ticket and put me in the queue for "next technician". This sounds pretty good, I agree and put my boss on notice. I wait for the call, ready to leave at anytime.

Thursday ends, no call. Friday, I wait, and at 2PM, still no call. So I dial in those familiar numbers and sit on hold for another 20 minutes. I'm told that ER tickets still need appointments, it's not a queue. And my ticket is not assigned. The first available apointment is now Monday. Thanks Gail.

This is not okay. I enter pissed-off mode, careful not to be mean to the poor call center lady. I carefully explain what Gail told me and how I have been waiting for a fix. She claims she can't do anything. I escallate to a manage. The manager also tries to tell me that I have to wait til Monday and "it's filling up fast". I use logic and the explanation, "This is why I check if anyone else services our area almost weekly" and "Well, we did just get unlimited data with Verizon. Maybe we just hotspot and cancel" and what-do-ya-know... There's an appointment for 8am-10am on Saturday.

... strange...

Saturday arrives and the blessing that is Lemar pays off. The tech immediately comments, "there's not enough left above ground for me to splice in. I have to run a new line."

Thank the gods for Lemar who ran tests and said the line is bad and then removed enough of it that the line *had* to be replaced. Now, Lemar was gonna bury the line for us, but new-guy says he has to put in a ticket. 2-4 weeks of moving around our internet lifeline, but at least we have internet. 9 days without service, you'd think we'd get a credit, right? Oh no, I was told "at least you don't get a service charge."

Thanks Comcast for not providing meters to your techs with read-outs. For employees that would splice into lines without checking integrity of connection, and a call center that can't handle phone calls or even make sure tickets get addressed. Oh and thanks for not charging me a service fee...
