Tagged by the lovely @norashelley to list my top 9 first watches of 2022. Thanks as always, Rose <3!
Once again, I didn’t see very many films for the first time in 2022, but these nine I’ve listed were all such wonderful and enjoyable surprises. I want to especially point out History is Made at Night, Father of the Bride, Written on the Wind, and A Night to Remember. 2022 was also the year I discovered Frank Borzage, and I look forward to seeing more of his work!
Tagging (but only if you want to!) @sonnet77 @bogarde @summers-in-hollywood @ladybegood and anyone else who wants to do it!

10 Characters/10 Shows
(In no particular order)
1. Roj Blake/Blake’s 7
2. Jenna Stannis/Blake’s 7
3. Irene Adler/Sherlock
4. Sherlock/Sherlock
5. Jethro Gibbs/NCIS
6. Ziva David/NCIS
7. Mr Gruffydd/How Green Was My Valley
8. Captain Gregg/The Ghost and Mrs Muir
9. Emma Peel/The Avengers
10. John Steed/The Avengers
Yep I grew up on old TV shows my parents watched, what can I say… Except to add: competent men, and women (especially in leather jumpsuits) are hot. And I’m a sucker for unrequited/impossible love between lead characters.

This is a juicy one!! Best Picture winner How Green Was My Valley is up against Citizen Kane, a film considered one of the greatest of all time.
How Green Was My Valley is truly a picture-perfect Oscar winner. A drama revolving around sorrow, perseverance, and family with a bit of romance? The stars have aligned. Variety writer Abel Green considered it a "sure-fire critic's picture", and The Film Daily argued it would become one of the best films of all time.
I did not find How Green Was My Valley to be that incredible. It had a moving plot and decent storytelling, but I do not think I could watch it again. Perhaps it was a bit too corny or slow.
I can't be for certain about the "best film of all time", but I can be certain that Citizen Kane is a spectacular film. The contrast between the timeline of Kane's life and the search for the meaning of "rosebud" keeps the film mysterious and engaging. The cinematography, especially the news segments, is outstanding. The sound! The acting by Welles! It's all great. I'm ready to watch it again.
At the same time, the 14th Academy Awards ceremony almost didn't happen! Entry of the US into World War 2 almost halted the upcoming ceremony, but it was eventually permitted by the War Department. The category of Best Documentary was also first introduced in this ceremony.
How Green Was My Valley still holds impressive current reception from both critics and the general audience, but is outranked in all areas by Citizen Kane. The latter boasts a perfect 100 Metascore from Metacritic, a feat held by only 8 other films.
Unofficial Review: This is one of those instances when I can't trust the data. This is definitely an upset.

When I introduced a slate of classic movies to my godson a few weeks back, I included Ford’s HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY not knowing what he’d think of it.
It was a smash hit. He loved it. We both cried with gusto.
It’s on #TCM tonight for #31DaysOfOscar
