One more Bette Davis horror movie rec for the day, this one is another classic. 1964's Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.
The film begins in the 1920's, young debutante Charlotte and her married lover John are planning on running away together. All seems to go to plan until Charlotte's father confronts John, letting him know that his wife knows of the "secret" affair and wants him to call it off with Charlotte. Telling her that he doesn't really love her and he's choosing to stay with his wife.
John agrees only because he fears for Charlotte's safety. He is seen talking to her while shes off camera, crying and heard running away from him.
John is later attacked and his head is chopped off, Charlotte is found with blood covering her dress. The entire party thinking she did it.
Now this may sound like I'm giving it all away but this right here just sets up for what's to come.
This movie keeps you guessing until the reveal and when I first saw it it COMPLETELY threw me off. One of my favorite parts in the movie is "
Don’t turn on the light. It’s not real when it’s light. It’s only real when it’s dark, dark and still"
Fun fact, Joan Crawford was supposed to star alongside Bette Davis as a way to capture the spark they had on Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Unfortunately due to some bts drama and tension Joan Crawford was replaced by Olivia De Haviland.
