Rodolfo di Giammarco per “la Repubblica - Edizione Roma”

«Tutti i palcoscenici, i set e le opportunità della mia vita hanno a che fare con Roma. Dopo due anni di Medicina all' università per far contento mio padre, a piazzale della Croce Rossa incontro ragazze e ragazzi che m' invogliano a fare un provino all' Accademia Nazionale d' Arte Drammatica, entro, e studio recitazione» ricorda parlando a raffica Enrico Lucherini.

«E quando lì il maestro Orazio Costa mi dice di fare "Edipo Re", e qualcuno commenta 'Ecco Edipo ai Parioli', capisco che sono un cane, me ne vado, ma una collega, Rossella Falk, mi convince a lavorare con la Compagnia dei Giovani insieme a Romolo Valli e Giorgio De Lullo, e giriamo l' Italia, andiamo in tournée in Sud America con sette commedie dove dico solo tre parole, e intanto assisto ai lanci dei nostri spettacoli a Montevideo, Lima, Caracas e Santiago, e quando torniamo in Italia m' invento la professione di press-agent».

Oggi Enrico Lucherini, energico 88enne, ha all' attivo, come testimoniano mostre antologiche e docufilm, la bellezza di 582 eventi da lui curati, valorizzati, resi clamorosi.

I primi spettacoli dal vivo da lei lanciati in che sale della Capitale figuravano in programma?

«Feci un' esperienza non facile all' Eliseo nel 1960 con un allestimento coraggioso di Visconti come "L' Arialda" di Testori che suscitò polemiche, censure e dissensi, con Luchino che rispose al pubblico col gesto dell' ombrello, e con Morelli-Stoppa, e Orsini, che manifestarono per protesta davanti al Quirinale. Poi al Valle nel 1965 mi sono occupato de "Il giardino dei ciliegi" sempre con regia di Visconti, ancora con Morelli-Stoppa, nel cartellone del Teatro Stabile della Città di Roma. Al contrario di allestimenti dolorosi e di routine, era un Cechov tutto fiorito e di color rosa, e ce l' ho nel cuore. Ma ricordo con uguale entusiasmo anche il battage per l'"Adelchi" di Vittorio Gassman nella tenda-circo piazzata nei pressi dell' Hotel Parco dei Principi. Che avventura nuova!».

All' inizio degli anni Sessanta lei è stato parte integrante della comunità notturna di via Veneto...

«Si andava al cinema, c' erano solo due locali importanti allora, e poi senza dircelo ci ritrovavamo tutti lì, in fazioni separate. Da Doney c' era il clan Visconti con Patroni Griffi, La Capria, Rosi. Di fronte, al Cafè de Paris, c' erano Flaiano, Fellini, Gassman e la Ferrero, De Feo, Talarico. Più su da Rosati c' erano i più seri e composti, tipo Antonioni e la Vitti, il regista Franco Indovina con Soraya, magari il Re Faruk con la cantante lirica Irma Capece Minutolo (che ribattezzammo Irma-capace-di-tutto).

Fioccavano i soprannomi.

Claudia Cardinale un po' malmenata (si diceva) da Pasquale Squitieri: Bella di botte. I due De Laurentiis: Momenti di Boria. Giuliana De Sio: la Melato immaginaria. Eleonora Giorgi: Bionda frégalo. Serena Grandi: Sotto il vestito gente. L' agente Carol Levi: L' onore dei prezzi...».

Intanto lei sfornava dovunque promozioni clamorose e s' era alleato con bravi paparazzi...

«Operavo anche in società. Dopo gli incarichi ricevuti per "La notte brava", "La ciociara" e "Il Gattopardo" chiesi aiuto a Matteo Spinola. Ed ebbi una fortuna sfacciata, che un po' m' andavo a cercare. Tra le prime cose che mi aiutarono a far rumore ci fu la richiesta dello sceneggiatore Gualtiero Jacopetti di dargli una mano per promuovere il film " Il mondo di notte" a base di spogliarelli: coinvolsi una regina dello strip- tease, Dodo D' Hambourg, la introdussi nell' inaugurazione di sei vetrine del sarto Emilio Schuberth a via Condotti, le chiesi di mostrarsi completamente nuda buttando via di colpo la pelliccia di zibellino, e ottenni che i fotografi urlassero, e che Schuberth ci cacciò furente dal suo atelier. Ma il giorno dopo eravamo su tutti i giornali».

Lei in quest' ambiente vanitoso, interessato, e pronto a qualsiasi colpo di scena, ha mai avuto amicizie serie, legami umani?

«Ho voluto bene a Luchino Visconti, Peppino Patroni Griffi, Vittorio Gassman e Marcello Mastroianni».

Può confessare una sua gaffe, un suo pauroso incidente professionale?

«Un giorno mi telefona Antonioni, mi prega di andare da lui alla Collina Fleming. Trovo in casa Monica Vitti, piuttosto cambiata da come l' avevo conosciuta in Accademia. Lui ha in mano la sceneggiatura di "Deserto rosso". Lei tocca la coda d' un pianoforte e dice 'Michele, viene, mi parla', a me lì per lì sfugge un 'Che dice?', e tutti e due mi guardano come se avessi rotto la poesia. Penso d' averla fatta grossa, ci salutiamo, vado via, e poi però vengo incaricato del film, e in seguito ho assistito Monica per i suoi film comici».

Tra circostanze a rischio e geniali trovate innocue, quali momenti del suo mestiere l' hanno divertita di più?

«Nella bolgia per la ballerina attrice turca Aiché Nana spogliatasi al Rugantino io c' ero, e il fotoreporter Secchiaroli mise in tasca a me i rullini quando fu perquisito dalla polizia, e l' ultima pagina dell' Espresso uscì inondata da quelle immagini. Con un' ambulanza salvai Agostina Belli che stava morendo in cella in un film agli Studios sulla Tiburtina. Calcolai bene come lanciare Sandra Milo sul set di "Vanina Vanini" facendole andare a fuoco la parrucca che io, Rossellini e Terzieff le strappammo un po' a fatica. In una conferenza organizzai un feroce litigio tra Monica Guerritore e un produttore accusato di aver messo una cinepresa non autorizzata che la riprendeva in certi punti chiave del corpo: un bluff.

Terrorizzai la Cardinale facendole accarezzare un ghepardo per il film "Il Gattopardo". Ma mi vanto d' aver fatto accettare a Sofia Loren la foto-manifesto disperata e violenta per "La ciociara". Mi piacque sorprendere i giornalisti a casa mia facendo loro scoprire dietro una porta Pieraccioni che leggeva un brano de "I laureati", o portare la stampa dietro le quinte del debutto di "D' amore si muore" di Patroni Griffi per svelare che il rumore del mare si doveva al rullio di sfere dentro un tamburo. Adesso a dare il buon esempio ci pensa il mio socio Gianluca Pignatelli».

Quando non deve sostenere un' impresa artistica, che Roma cerca e riconosce sua?

«Mio padre mi cacciò di casa e mi comprò un ufficio ai Parioli, in una traversa di Viale Parioli. Fuori dal lavoro andavo al Bar della Pace, ma ordinariamente vado con giornali e riviste al bar Cigno. Se capita, sono uno spettatore teatrale. Dopo le direttive di ieri, aspetterò che le sale riaprano. Io la stavo per far grossa: il 6 novembre avrei inaugurato, da attore, la stagione dell' Off/Off, con "C' era questo, c' era quello", raccontando memorie di tanto lavoro, accanto a un amico ingegnere, Nunzio Bertolami».

Per quello che si desume Il CSM ha perso la sua autorevolezza: viene fuori dai colloqui intercettati il tentativo di delineare un assetto di potere alternativo a quelli democraticamente costituiti. L’onorevole Lotti, autosospesosi tardivamente dal Partito Democratico, con Palamara ed altri Magistrati nelle riunioni notturne nell’albergo romano, cerca garanzie affinché un Procuratore amico possa sostituire Pignatone alla Procura di Roma: l’obiettivo è insabbiare l’inchiesta Consip che lo vede irrimediabilmente imputato. Al contempo Palamara vuole un altro Procuratore amico a Perugia per bloccare la sua indagine, per la quale ad oggi è stato accusato di corruzione. Sono citati nelle intercettazioni anche i nomi del vicepresidente del CSM Davide Ermini, del quale Lotti ritiene che può costituire la cerniera con il Quirinale. Ritiene, il Lotti, impudentemente,di aver sentito Mattarella. È stato clamorosamente smentito e definito millantatore dalla Presidenza quirinalizia. È impressionante anche la cadenza dialettale dei colloqui:un volgare romanesco ed epiteti da suburra che si sentono a più riprese. Emerge anche il livore rancoroso tra colleghi e la sete di vendicarsi a colpi di indagini e dossieraggi: un verminaio. Tra l’altro mentre Palamara ed altri confabulano, ordiscono, tramano, un altro Magistrato nel lussuoso albergo dorme stravaccato su un divano. Ha scritto in proposito Gramellini sul Corriere della Sera del 15/6/2019:”Il dottor Corrado Cartoni va a cena con alcuni colleghi del Consiglio superiore della magistratura, ma forse esagera con i fritti. L’augusta comitiva decide di continuare la serata nella camera d’albergo di uno dei commensali, dove è annunciato l’arrivo di un invitato a sorpresa, il sottosegretario renziano alle lottizzazioni, che con apprezzabile sincerità si chiama Lotti. Un gruppetto di maschi stravaccati sui divani di un hotel a parlare di poltrone. C’è di che rivalutare il bunga bunga. Il Cartoni, in pieno raptus digestivo da arancino, crolla esanime con la testa sul bracciolo. Mentre i suoi colleghi insonni si battono per l ‘indipendenza della magistratura discutendo con un politico su come spartirsi i posti, lui se la dorme beato. Forse russa. Forse sogna giudici dispersi su isole incontaminate. Quando si sveglia, le procure più importanti del Monopoli sono già andate”. Questo intreccio tra Magistrati e politici( si ricordi anche il ruolo di Cosimo Ferri ex magistrato ed oggi deputato del Partito Democratico in quota renziana),ha richiamato alla mente l’inchiesta della loggia P2, sul presupposto fondamentale che l’ emersione di un assetto di potere alternativo può rivelarsi eversivo. Infatti Tina Anselmi, Presidente della Commissione d’inchiesta sulla P2 ,ritenne che il “piano di rinascita democratico”di Licio Gelli aveva questo singolare obiettivo: delineare un sistema di potere alternativo a quello democraticamente eletto. Analogamente l’intreccio tra Magistrati e politici per le divisioni infauste delle procure ha proprio questa finalità: pilotare sentenze, inventare indagini, dossier, distruggere carriere altrui, vendicarsi con inchieste farlocche per spudorate strumentalizzazioni mediatiche. Siamo ormai all’eversione della giustizia.

L’Italia campione d’Europa è rientrata a Roma. Oggi gli Azzurri attesi da Mattarella e Draghi

Ad attendere gli Azzurri centinaia di tifosi, che però non hanno potuto vedere i calciatori all’arrivo a Roma

L’Italia campione d’Europa di calcio è rientrata a Roma. L’A3198 di Alitalia, volo AZ 9001, proveniente da Londra Luton è atterrato all’aeroporto di Fiumicino qualche minuto dopo le 6 di lunedì mattina.

Gli Azzurri sono arrivati a Roma dopo il trionfo di ieri sera a Wembley, in finale contro l’Inghilterra, battuta ai calci di rigore. Ad attendere la Nazionale, nell’area arrivi, c’erano già moltissimi tifosi, in attesa dalle prime ore dell’alba per poter accogliere e salutare la squadra che ci ha reso nuovamente, dopo 53 anni dall’ultima vittoria, campioni d’Europa.

Quando Mancini e Chiellini sono apparsi in cima alle scalette dell’aereo a Fiumicino, è scoppiato un boato tra gli operatori che si sono radunati sotto il velivolo con applausi e cori. Bonucci ha intonato «I campioni dell’Europa siamo noi». Ma non sono mancante foto ricordo e ringraziamenti a tutti gli azzurri, apparsi entusiasti e commossi.

Ad accogliere i campioni un maxi striscione di Aeroporti di Roma con la scritta «Grazie azzurri». I calciatori e lo staff sono stati prelevati sotto all’aereo e sono saliti sul pullman, che ha poi lasciato alle 6.30 lo scalo romano, in direzione dell’hotel Parco dei Principi. Da lontano si sentivano gli echi delle trombe delle centinaia di tifosi che si trovavano nella zona arrivi (e non hanno potuto vedere gli Azzurri atterrare).

Gli Azzurri sono quindi arrivati all’hotel, dove ad attendere Chiellini, che è sceso dal bus con una corona in testa e sventolando la coppa, e compagni c’era un nutrito gruppo di tifosi.

Oggi la Nazionale pranzerà in hotel, poi nel pomeriggio è attesa al Quirinale alle ore 17 per essere ricevuta dal presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella, presente ieri allo stadio londinese di Wembley per la finale degli Europei, e alle 18 dal presidente del Consiglio Mario Draghi a Palazzo Chigi. Con loro, anche il finalista a Wimbledon — sconfitto da Djokovic — Matteo Berrettini.

Nel pomeriggio, alcuni dei giocatori insieme ad alcuni del team sono andati a vaccinarsi con la seconda dose al Policlinico militare del Celio, dove sono stati accolti dal generale Francesco Paolo Figliuolo. «Quanto l'Italia fa squadra, vince, come dimostra la Nazionale», ha detto il commissario straordinario per l'emergenza Covid, usando il calcio come metafora per la campagna vaccinale, dove è bene che il Paese sia unito e compatto nelle logiche di somministrazione. Tra gli azzurri che oggi hanno ricevuto la seconda dose ci sono Belotti e De Rossi.

Michele de Lucchi. Arquitecto y diseñador de productos.

Michele de Lucchi (1951, Ferrara, Italia) es uno de los arquitectos italianos más importantes de nuestro tiempo.

Estudió en el Liceo Científico Enrico Fermi (Padua) y se formó como arquitecto en la Universidad de Arquitectura de Florencia, uno de los centros más prestigiosos del sector, licenciándose en 1975.

Michele de Lucchi es un visionario de la arquitectura y del diseño, con una capacidad de razonamiento rápida y audaz.

En su época de estudiante supo conquistar la confianza de algunos de los profesores más importantes de la Facultad de Arquitectura. Tras licenciarse ejerció de profesor adjunto, y con el tiempo también llegó a ser profesor titular en el Politécnico de Milán.

Su método de trabajo considera la arquitectura como un sistema integrado de definición de los espacios y de creación de los objetos.

En 1973, mientras Michele de Lucchi trabajaba en la Universidad con Adolfo Natalini, co-fundó con Piero Brombini; Pierpaolo Bortolami; Boris Pastrovicchio, y Valerio Tridenti el grupo de arquitectura y diseño Cavart, que promovió la arquitectura radical y experimental a través de actuaciones, publicaciones y manifiestos.

Esta fase a partir de entonces influyó enormemente en la visión y en la producción de De Lucchi hasta el punto que, una vez concluida su colaboración con la Universidad de Florencia, decidió irse a Milán (centro neurálgico del diseño italiano y europeo, de la producción y de las ideas de vanguardia).

Precisamente, en la capital de la provincia de Lombardía, Michele de Lucchi abre un Estudio donde inicia su actividad y colabora con algunas de las empresas más importantes. Pronto se convierte en uno de los jóvenes más demandados y prometedores en el panorama del diseño italiano.

En 1981 fue llamado, deslumbrado por su talento, por el ilustre Ettore Sottsas (que estaba trabajando en un proyecto de realización de la casa posmoderna) para formar parte del grupo Memphis, donde introdujo motivos geométricos en los laminados plástico de la cooperativa.

Y de la mano de Michele de Lucchi nacen los objetos que forman parte de siete colecciones, inherentes al proyecto de la casa posmoderna.

En 1990 fundó Produzione Privata, una compañía a pequeña escala de venta al por menor de productos diseñados por De Lucchi realizados con técnicas artesanales y artesanos dedicados.

Durante el periodo de Memphis, Sottsas también le confía el proyecto para Synthesis, la sección de Olivetti que se encargaba del mobiliario de oficinas.

Precisamente con este primer trabajo Michele de Lucchi consigue estrechar su relación con Olivetti, convirtiéndose en Director de Diseño de esta compañía de 1992 á 2002; aunque también desarrolló proyectos experimentales para Compaq Computers; Philips; Siemens, y Vitra.

A partir de su idea visionaria del mundo, surge el elemento de decoración -la lámpara Tolomeo– que ha marcado la historia del diseño italiano y mundial.

Con la lámpara Tolomeo para Artemide, un clásico con más de 20 años de edad por el que no pasa el tiempo, consiguió el primer reconocimiento de prestigio internacional : el Compasso d’oro.

Tolomeo ha sido una idea revolucionaria que, en muy pocos años, se ha convertido en el arquetipo de la lámpara de sobremesa. Su sistema de brazos extensibles ha dado muy pronto la vuelta al mundo y su nombre ha tenido un enorme eco.

En los años inmediatamente posteriores a la realización de Tolomeo, sin embargo, el ámbito en el que trabaja con más pasión Michelle de Lucchi es el entorno laboral de “oficinas y espacios de trabajo” con la búsqueda de soluciones de vanguardia que conjugan la practicidad con el sentido estético para crear entornos laborales, vivibles y humanos.

Su nombre va aparejado al proyecto de interiores de numerosos institutos financieros y bancarios en Europa.

Diseñó y restaurado edificios en Japón, Alemania, Suiza y en Italia para Enel; Olivetti; Piaggio; Poste Italiane; Telecom Italia; Hera; Intesa Sanpaolo, y otros bancos italianos y extranjeros.

Ha re-diseñado los entornos de servicio e imagen corporativa de muchas empresas, y la organización técnica y estética de sus entornos de trabajo.

Su estilo y su pasión son muy demandados y muy pronto su fama superará las fronteras nacionales con lo que se convierte en uno de los jóvenes arquitectos más apreciados a escala internacional.

Sin embargo, la diversificación ha sido siempre el motor de la creatividad de Michele de Lucchi, que se ha encargado también de montajes culturales en lugares destacados como las Caballerizas del Quirinale, y la Trienal de Milán.

Diseñó edificios para museos como la Triennale di Milano; el Palacio de Exposiciones de Roma; el Neues Museum de Berlín, y el de la Galería Piazza Scala de Milán.

En los últimos años ha desarrollado muchos proyectos de arquitectura para clientes privados y públicos en Georgia, que incluyen el Ministerio del Interior y el puente de la Paz en Tbilisi; el Radisson Hotel y un Edificio de Servicios Públicos en Batumi.

Su trabajo profesional siempre ha ido de lado a lado, con una exploración personal de la arquitectura, el diseño, la tecnología y la artesanía.

En 2003, el Centro Georges Pompidou de París adquirió un número considerable de sus trabajos, y sus piezas están expuestas en los museos de diseño más importantes de Europa, Estados Unidos y Japón.

De Lucchi considera el diseño como un medio de comunicación, y en su obra se percibe claramente esa evolución y diferente forma de manifestarse desde sus orígenes como diseñador joven radical y contestatario, hasta el creador de fama internacional que es en la actualidad.

Check In

Early morning flights or trains will transport you to the city (see Practicalities below). You can negotiate to check in early at many hotels. Head up towards Piazza di Spagna where you will find Antica Osteria La Lupa. Although the food may be unspectacular, the setting is gorgeous. Sit on the terrace outside and feel as if you are a million miles away from the tourist masses a few streets away.

Sit on the iconic Spanish Steps

When you’ve eaten your fill, it will be time to get started on your walking tour of the city. Head to Piazza di Spagna where you will find the iconic Spanish Steps. All life is here! It’s the place where tourists and locals alike sit, chat and just watch the world go by. The fountain at the bottom is a photographer’s dream. In consequence, you will have to compete for space to take your shots with the world, his wife and her mother. Once you’ve survived the photo shoot, dodge the bodies and make your way to the top of the steps where the Trinità dei Monti church is located. Again, this is another great place to get good photos. In this case, you will have views down the steps and panoramas of Rome in the background.

Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese is perhaps best known for its museum and art gallery. However, a walk in the neighbouring gardens is free. La passegiata is a truly Italian tradition and you can expect to see couples and families wandering around on a sunny day. There are plenty park benches, so no need to worry about getting tired. Make sure to take a peek down into Piazza del Popolo, one of the most famous squares in central Rome.

Now it’s time to backtrack to Trinità dei Monti. Don’t worry! There is a good reason for this and you won’t be disappointed. Via delle Quattro Fontane is a long and hilly street that elevates street art to a new level. Walk up the street to the intersection with Via Quirinale and Via Venti Settembre where the four classical statues are located. There is a statue with a fountain on each street corner, hence the name ‘Street of the Four Fountains’. The two bearded male figures represent the Tiber (Tevere) and Arno rivers, while the female figures are the Roman goddesses Diana and Giunone. The sculptures are intricate in detail and it’s one of the city’s secret places. You won’t have to battle the masses to take photos. In fact, this is a place that invites you to linger.

Trajan’s Forum and Il Vittoriano

Continue straight along Via delle Quattro Fontane until you reach Via Nazionale. There, you should take a right and head down in the direction of Piazza Venezia. On your way you will come across Trajan’s Forum, another reminder of the imperial history of the city. Dominated by the imposing Trajan’s Column, many consider this to be the greatest of the imperial fora. Should you have time, it is also thought to be best to visit it before you go the Roman Forum (separate tickets required). It apparently helps you to put everything in perspective. If you arrive too late for a visit, it is another great place just to stop and look.

Once you finish admiring it and taking photos, continue on to Piazza Venezia. The nearby Vittoriano was built to honour Italy’s first king. It is an imposing structure that is worth a daytime visit to see panoramas of the city and the surrounding mountains. However, it is clearly militaristic and not particularly loved by the local populace.

Dinner at Antico Arco

I may look tired, but it was worth it for the bread!

Antico Arco, located near Villa Doria Pamphilj, generates a lot of buzz. Note that the location will require a taxi (ten euro each way from the centre). Overall, I can recommend it, although my meal there with a friend can perhaps best be summed up as ‘fireworks and flops’. First, the fireworks were my starter (a deconstructed kebab), the amuse-bouches served between the courses (a fava bean soup and a mini dessert of orange and chocolate crumb), and also the bread, which was some of the best I ever tasted. However, the lamb main was unspectacular and the actual dessert had an overpowering taste spicy taste. It was a little disappointing given that the restaurant often receives rave reviews. Your call!

Those who want to finish the day with a dose of Roman nightlife might check out the trendy Bar del Fico near Piazza Navona. On the other hand, you may be dog tired after the day and decide to save your energy for the following morning. In this case, a letto!

Why not enjoy a typical Italian breakfast of a brioche, coffee and juice in Piazza della Rotonda? The square is absolutely enchanting. After all, it isn’t every day that you get the opportunity to have breakfast accompanied by views of an almost fully intact Roman monument. Also, it’s Rome, so you can just enjoy people watching and soaking up the atmosphere. Ristorante Di Rienzo has great views of the Pantheon. If you stay at the reasonably priced Di Rienzo Palace, they will include breakfast in the price of your room.

The Pantheon

For better or worse, the Pantheon is now a Roman Catholic church. As a result, there are restrictions on your visit. For example, you can hardly go in to take photos if there is a service taking place. However, you should certainly see its vast interior when you are in Rome. This incredible edifice gives you a sense of how the city looked like in its imperial heyday. Along with the Colosseum, it is a place that transports you back to ancient Rome and it is almost perfectly preserved.

As it is a church, signs tell you to dress respectably, not to make noise and not to use flash photography. The fact that the Catholic Church decided to use it as a church enabled it to survive in its current form. On the other hand, it somehow just doesn’t feel right for many visitors. After all, it still looks and feels like a Roman monument.

Another church! It’s Rome! About a ten minute walk from Piazza della Rotonda, you will find Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, which gives its name to the piazza where it is located. From the outside, it may appear uninspiring. However, wait till you see the artwork inside. Apart from art by Raphael and Sansovino, the highlight of a visit must be the Madonna di Loreto by Caravaggio. Seeing this piece of art is a true ‘wow’ moment.

Just a five minute walk from Chiesa di Sant’Agostino, Piazza Navona packs a punch. In a city of fountains, you will find three masterpieces here. Its centrepiece is the magnificent Bernini Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, but the Fontana del Moro and the Fontana del Nettuno, which are found at either end of the piazza, are also stunning. View the square from the arched entrance of the nearby Museo di Roma. This place is a highlight of a trip to Rome!

The Trevi Fountain

Make your way over to the Trevi Fountain. Is it touristy? Yes. Do you need to be careful there? Yes, there are pickpockets. Should you see it? Yes, yes and YES again! Not only is it the largest Baroque fountain in the world, but it is arguably the most beautiful fountain in the world. Under a clear blue Roman sky, the Trevi Fountain positively sparkles. Of course, the secret is out and has been for a few centuries. However, no visit to Rome is complete without seeing it and you may want to go back again and again. Why? Because it looks different but equally captivating whether you visit in the early morning, during the day or at night. According to local superstition, you will return to Rome if you throw a coin in. Indeed, maybe you will want to return as soon as you see the Trevi Fountain.

Lunch at Spaghetteria L’Archetto

Spahetteria L’Archetto. This is a real find. Serving a more than comprehensive range of pasta and pizza, it attracts both locals and tourists alike. You can either eat outside on the terrace or inside in the main restaurant. Although it is not located far from the Trevi Fountain, prices are really reasonable. The service is helpful and the food is tasty. What better way to finish off your trip to Rome!

Practicalities

Getting There and Away

Rome has two major airports. All the main airlines use Fiumicino and it has links to other destinations in Italy as well as other destinations in Europe, the Americas and Asia. The Leonardo Express train runs to Roma Termini Station every 30 minutes and costs 11 euro. The price of a taxi has apparently been capped at 48 euro due to complaints about tourist scams. Ciampino is often used by low cost airlines such as Ryanair and it is located closer to the city. However, there are no train services, although buses take about 40 minutes to reach central Rome.

Trenitalia offers train services throughout the country. It is a good idea to book your tickets in advance. Be warned that the website is a bit unwieldy to use. Trains from Milan take about three hours, while similar express services from Venice and Florence take 4 hours and a little over 1 hour respectively.

Accommodation

There is accommodation for all budgets in Rome. Di Rienzo Palace, near the Pantheon, is highly recommended. A single here costs around 80 euro per night and includes breakfast at their restaurant in Piazza della Rotonda. The bathrooms are sumptuous and the rooms are more than adequate. Also, you can laze on the rooftop sun terrace on a warm day. Salvi, who manages the hotel, speaks fluent English and provides a friendly welcome to the city. Take this as a rave review from this traveller and I’m not paid to give recommendations!

Many travellers wax lyrical about Trastevere and it could be the place to go if you want more of a local experience. There are apparently some really good AirBnB apartments and rooms available if you book early enough.

Food

Foodies should note that Trastevere again gets top marks from travellers for the quality of its local eateries.

Rome is touristy and this has an impact on both price and quality. Stay away from the main tourist attractions and you will find good value restaurants. Travellers staying in central Rome will find good bargains if they are prepared to do a bit of footwork. Spaghetteria L’Archetto (mentioned above) is excellent value and most dishes cost less than 10 euro.

Warning

Rome is touristy. Therefore, you have to be careful of pickpockets around all the major tourist sites. Don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket and be careful in crowds such as when you travel on buses and trains. Take particular care in Termini Station. Just to give you a flavour of this, a gang of gypsy children surrounded me at the underground station in Termini a few years ago. Although they got nothing, they managed to slit every pocket in my trousers!

As most of us know too well, love does not always last (well until you find true love they say!) and when it ends, you are allowed to cry! You gotta let it out, girl! (or boy!) Rome is known as the city of fountains – so there isn’t a better or more cathartic place in the world to sit and cry.

Many Romans say that la miglior fontana per piangere la fine di un amore (the best fountain to mourn the end of a love story) is the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola (or as Romans call it er Fontanone – the big fountain). And it is big! It sits proudly on Gianicolo – one of the hills of Rome that is a comfortable climb from Trastevere. The bonus is that the location offers a breathtaking view of the city, and believe me – it will reignite your passion for life and make you forget all your worries! And history tells us that in 1849 during the battle for Rome on Gianicolo, the Fontanone sustained damage from French cannon fire – but over 150 years later, it’s still standing – a reminder that broken hearts hurt, but they mend too!

Now that you’ve done the Italian thing and cried for your lost love – let it go already! Then head straight down the hill to the fun and oldest Roman quartiere (district) of Trastevere. Get lost in the winding streets and have a drink (or 5) in the endless selection of bars. You will find new love here (well ok, maybe not Mr/Ms Right… but nothing wrong with a Mr/Ms Right Now!). Couple of bar tips include Freni e Frizioni (Via dei Politeama 4), Ma che siete venuti a fa (Via Benedetta 25) or Trastevere institution Bar San Calisto (Piazza San Calisto, 3).

Gentlemen, if you want to impress a lady, meet her in the early evening at the Spanish Steps (Piazza Spagna – very romantic!) and take a short stroll to Hotel Locarno for an aperitivo. Aperitif time in Rome is between 6.30 and 9.30 pm and is the best thing to do at this hour. This stylish art deco hotel is located near Piazza del Popolo and has an intimate garden terrace perfect for drinks as the sun sets on the Eternal City.
