video nasties was a colloquial term coined in the united kingdom by 1982 which originally applied to a number of films distributed on video cassette that were criticized for their violent content by the press, commentators such as mary whitehouse, and various religious organizations.
while violence in films released to cinemas had received attention from an official body, the british board of film censorship, for many years, the lack of a regulatory system for video sales combined with the claim that any film could fall into children's hands led to public debate. many of these "video nasties" were low-budget horror films produced in italy and the united states. the furore created by the response to video nasties led to the introduction of the video recordings act 1984 which imposed a stricter code of censorship on videos than was required for cinema release. several major studio productions ended up being banned on video, falling within the scope of legislation designed to control the distribution of video nasties. due to a legislative mistake discovered in august 2009, the video recordings act 1984 was repealed and re-enacted without change by the video recordings act 2010.

théâtre du grand guignol opened in 1897 and closed in 1962. one of the most notorious stages of all time, it was the place where playwrights staged horrific tales of violence and revenge under the haunting eaves of a former chapel. during its 65 years in operation, the grand guignol staged over a thousand plays to both the shock and delight of its audiences, going down in history as one of the foundations of horror-as-entertainment. in a typical grand guignol performance, patrons would see five or six short plays, all in a style that attempted to be brutally true to the theatre's naturalistic ideals. the most popular and best-known were the horror plays, which featured a distinctly bleak worldview and gory special effects, particularly in their climaxes.

Boris Karloff: The Man Behind The Monster has to really sprint to try and cover the breadth of his life and career, and there are aspects to both you’ll wish they’d spent more time on, but it’s a great primer. Even I am going to be reprioritize a couple of films this year after watching this.

horror movie history: george méliès (1861-1938)
the man, the myth, the legend of horror movies is george méliès, who created the first horror movie "the house of the devil." originally an illusionist, his background helped him tweak and manipulate images on film. he created special effects on screen, such as spirits, dancing skeletons, giant creatures, and sudden appearances and disappearances. a trick that this early director used was what spirit photographers would use in the 1860s, which was the practice of using double exposures or superimpositions to depict ghosts within a frame of film. after dominating the very early film industry, he constructed a glass studio in paris, which is where he invented many cameras modifications and devices to help him bring his visions to screen. he is believed to be responsible for many special effects firsts: split screen, double exposure, overlapping dissolves, fades in and out, and stop motion photography.

Several times a day I remember how Anne Boleyn's ladies rushed to take her body away after the execution because they were horrified at what the men in the crowd were capable of doing to her corpse.
