Myths answer timeless questions and serve as a compass for each generation. Legends are told to explain the world and our mortal experience by providing hope, heroes and direction. Unlike fairy tales, each are reflections of our reality. They are warnings and promises, laments as celebrations. In my 2018 Myths & Legends series, conceptualized with exhibition partner Joshua Coffy @giftprolific, I reinvented mythical themes and characters with salvaged, found-objects. Much like the legends I portrayed- the materials themselves provide a unique perspective of our disposable past and the enlightened transformation we are capable of. Here We Are, the Hereafter, 2017 assemblage, 24" x 12" x 5" (Sold) The Midrash explains that in the Garden of Eden after Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge, she gave its fruit to all of the animals to eat. Only the chol (phoenix) abstained from eating it. So, death was decreed upon all animals except the phoenix, which was granted eternal life. Some say that a phoenix lives a thousand years, at the end of which a fire issues forth from its nest and burns it up. All that remains is an egg, from which the phoenix grows new limbs and lives again The Phoenix is a symbol of good luck, harmony, peace, balance, and prosperity. This magical creature represents fire and passion – the flames of true inspiration. Since I am stuck in a leg brace for awhile unable to get into my studio and create new work just yet, I am sharing some of my favorite pieces from past years. This assemblage is titled Southern Gothic after a genre of acoustic-based alternative rock and Americana music that combines elements of traditional country, folk, blues, and gospel, often with dark lyrical subject matter. Characteristics of Southern Gothic include the presence of irrational and transgressive thoughts, desires, and impulses, dark humor, and an overall angst-ridden sense of alienation . This Assemblage is mounted on a 12" vinyl record and was created (and sold) as part of the 2018 DISCOLANDIA exhibition at @wonderlandsf and curated by the incomparable @irenehfeiks. Irene has curated another spectacular show that open TONIGHT with works on skateboards by 140 artists currently at @mirusgallery in San Francisco. They have been a pleasure to work with and wrote an impressive press release for the show: UMA Gallery is pleased to present “ANATOMICALLY INCORRECT”, a solo exhibition of mixed‐media assemblages by San Francisco based artist Dianne Hoffman. Using found objects and recycled materials, Hoffman creates intimately scaled, three‐dimensional tableaux that give new life and meaning to discarded items. Further embellished with collage and other traditional media, each assemblage tells a story that reflects the artist’s curiosity, compassion, and sense of humor. Hoffman’s work is characterized by muted and earthy colors, creating whispers of nostalgia from these artifacts left over from another time. ANATOMICALLY INCORRECT is UMA Gallery’s first solo‐artist exhibition in the repurposed embalming studio of the Mosswood Chapel, a former mortuary located at 3630 Telegraph Ave, in the Lower Temescal district of Oakland CA. UMA Gallery is also the producer of Unkle Morty’s Pop‐Ups, a monthly market of independent arts & crafts vendors held on the First Saturday of each month in the same location. Look what the Owl coughed up! A few weeks ago my friend Maureen gifted me a bag of fragrant mud balls she found in a church yard under a tree.
