HOW TO MAKE A HOMESTUCK UPD8 BOT FOR YOUR DISCORD

this is a guide for setting up an rss feed reader for your discord server using the MonitoRSS discord bot, so you can get notifications to your computer/phone/whatever

FIRST you'll need to invite the bot to your server by going to this page and pressing "invite me" and going through those steps for whatever discord server you want to invite it to

once it's in, make sure that it can send messages to whatever channel you want it in. for privacy you might want to make it so it can't read/send messages in any channel barring the one you want it to send upd8s to

next, press the "control panel" button on the page that i linked above, give the site permissions from discord, and click on the "manage personal feeds" button

then, press the "add feed" button in the navbar, give it a title (it doesn't matter what you name it) and for the rss feed link, put https://homestuck2.com/story/rss (this is the homestuck rss feed) and press save

at the bottom, you'll see that you have no connections set up, so you'll need to link the bot to whatever channel you want it in, in whatever server you want it in. the connection name doesn't matter

this should make it all set up! that said, you'll probably want to change some aspects about it, like the message that it sends. also it will send an upd8 for every single page with the default settings so let's make it not do that

click on the "manage" button for your new connection

first order of business, if you want to change the text that it sends, scroll down on this main page that it brings you to and edit the "content" part. there's some different codes but basically, "{{title}}" is the page that updated and "{{link}}" is the link to the page, so you'll probably want at least {{link}} in your new message template. if you want pinging, you'll also want to add "@everyone" here

make sure you save your changes!!

next up is making it so the bot won't spam you to death when there's multi-page upd8s, so you'll head to the "delivery rate limits" tab at the top

just press add and the default should be good. it'll make it so the bot won't send any further messages after the first one for 60 seconds, but upd8s have all pages dropped at the same time, so this default setting works

and now you should be all set! happy homestucking. it's lovely to be back
