Vaguely AroAce HisoHoma Because Reasons:

Despite Hisoka's insults and Homare's complaints, they really are more comfortable with each other than just about anyone else. Neither of them feel the need to be someone they aren't, because they've already seen the worst in each other and haven't sent the other running. Homare's had his social blunders. Hisoka's admitted bits of his past. They've messed up with each other and their troupemates and themselves and only grown closer and stronger through it all.

Hisoka trusts Homare to stand behind him. Homare lets down his walls. Neither are afraid to admit they haven't got a clue what's going through the other's head, because they find ways to work through it.

Homare provides Hisoka with his daily dose of marshmallows and makes sure he doesn't sleep anywhere too strange for too long. Hisoka listens to his ramblings, poetic or otherwise, and makes him laugh when writer's block has him down.

They're partners, on stage and off. They love each other, no doubt about that. The how and the way are a little fuzzier.

Their hearts don't flutter at the thought of the other. They're not overcome with lust. They just feel safe and seen with each other, and that's enough for them.

That's not to say the traditonally dubbed romantic stuff isn't nice. Homare is an artist at heart and has always been fascinated with the art of romance. Kissing! Grand gestures! Passionate professions of devotion! He adores it, but he doesn't need it. There is no bone-deep urge to hold Hisoka's hand or kiss him senseless. He just happens to find those things enjoyable, much like he enjoys travelling or a fine wine.

Hisoka has simple wants and simple needs. He's spent most of his life alone and is used to looking after himself. He doesn't need anything from anyone.... Except that he kind of does now. He's grown used to being cared for. Having someone to feed him marshmallows, keep him awake when he needs it, offer him a soft lap when he doesn't, and keep him company when the nightmares are too much.

It works.

Just. Nfbdsvuzj. Take this:

Homare, petting Hisoka's hair as he lays in his lap: "Hisoka-kun, what are we?"

Hisoka, sleepily: "Does it matter?"

Homare, laughing fondly: "I suppose not."

Enough time passes that Homare's certain the other's fallen asleep before Hisoka lets out a quiet: "You're my partner, Arisu."

Homare just smiles and continues running his fingers through his hair.
