The bell to signal the end of the day had rang and the halls of Hawkins high were quickly emptying out, leaving behind those who either had agreed to stay behind to catch up on work or were forced to attend detention. Boris had half a mind to just skip out on it entirely because he knew it would be dead boring, but he didn't want to risk pissing his dad off with a phone call home over something so stupid and time wasting, especially when he only just moved here. Slouched in his seat with a book open in front of him, his gaze shot up when he saw the only other person in the room, a redhead, get up and rummage through another students backpack after they'd temporarily left the room with the teacher.

Stealing was second nature to Boris, though he had formed his own set of rules surrounding it. Stealing from big companies didn't bother him in the slightest, but he preferred not to take directly from other people (unless absolutely necessary) when they worked so hard for their earnings. A batwing eyebrow lifted inquisitively as he questioned the redhead on it, only to discover that what she was stealing had been stolen from her first. ❝ Ah, so you are only taking back what's yours. Fair's fair. ❞ He shrugged, leaning forward to fold his arms atop the desk and across the book, Russian scrawled across the pages that had been left open. He was much more interested in striking up a conversation while he could, if the girl would entertain the idea. ❝ What did you do to end up here? ❞

In some ways, the days spent in Las Vegas with Rachel seemed like only yesterday. Days of shoplifting (though he remained a thief to this day), god awful long walks to his house under the shade of his umbrella, lounging around the house with cigarettes and alcohol and getting lost in conversations while old movies played on the TV--usually feeling too hot from the Nevada sun or too cold from the air conditioning. It was only a year that they'd spent together, but in that time he'd made so many memories that would stick with him for the rest of his life. He would forever remember the girl that he’d fallen in love with, the one he planned to run away with and who had disappeared on him without a trace.

Stubborn as he had been to move on, the lack of evidence making it especially hard, Boris had grieved her absence and had moved forward in life. For a while, he would see her when he was high out of his mind, making it that much harder on him and reigniting his hope that she was still alive, but eventually those appearances had gone away to. Since then, he had his flings and relationships, some more short lived than others and some more meaningful. The woman he’d been staying with on and off recently was definitely one of the shorter lived ones.

❝Nie. I care about her, but not so much like that. Well, not anymore, see. She was my girl for a while, now we only enjoy each others company, if you understand me. No strings attached, no obligations, that sort of thing.❞ Gaze landing on Rachel’s face, familiar but different, Boris concluded that the most noticeable change was that they only had one eye now. ❝And him?❞ A quirk of the brow, arms folding atop the table as he leaned in. ❝Money, protection, or love? Which is it?❞
