Things I liked about the new SGE movie (more under the cut):

1. Tedros’s love confession. Such a terrible time to confess. That’s SO Tedros of him. And his bit about how family is important. I saw those parental issues, Tedros.

2. Some of their OSTs are actual bangers. Like the scene where Tedros promises to take Sophie to the ball, and it causes a skirmish? The soundtrack that plays there is sublime (it’s an instrumental of Who Do You Think You Are? by Kiana Ledé and Cautious Clay).

3. The costumes were BEAUTIFUL. Sophie’s outfits were amazing.

4. The scene where Hester’s demon gets attacked by wasps definitely grew on me. Her sobbing afterwards, Anadil and Dot rushing to comfort her? Love to see it.

5. That little scene during the Never’s Ball where Anadil and Hester touch glowing fingertips. Let’s go lesbians!

6. “My heart belongs to another.” Oh, Hort.

7. A cameo from Soman himself!

8. Agatha punching Tedros after the Gregor incident. Tbh, Gregor as a whole. He was a good way to show the consequences of three failures, but I’m sad that’s all his character amounted to - to make a point. He was sweet and kind, and he deserves his grocery store </3

9. Some things were taken from the book directly. “Can I touch your hair?” Hester spitting and it creating sparks.

Reasons why I have a bone to pick with the new SGE movie:

1. Sophie is too nice. In the books, this girl MURDERED someone for cutting her hair. She pushed Agatha into a wave of churning water/sludge, tried to kill her multiple times, even befriended her for the sole purpose of fulfilling a ‘good deed’ so she’d get into the School for Good. She’s selfish, flawed, and the film makes it out to be Rafal manipulating her, making her do terrible things. Like, no, she WANTS to do awful things. She likes it. She’s extremely flawed and it’s why she’s so interesting!

2. Rafal. Why does everyone know about him...? We didn’t even know his name until book 3. Why is he going around with his face in full view?? Like, this is the School Master here. THE GUY WHO WEARS A MASK TO HIDE HIS IDENTITY?

3. Leonora Lesso. They spliced her with Evelyn Sader. They made her dramatic and shouty. She’s cold, calculated, and calm. And definitely not in love with Rafal... she’s definitely in love with Dovey imo, but they struggle to hug in the movie. Dovey, whom Leonora describes as ‘her Agatha’? You’d have no idea. If they ever make a second film, I have no clue how they’ll involve Evelyn and Aric.

4. Where is The Beast? His whole being murdered by Sophie never happens because he just doesn’t exist. And the whole reason for Sophie ending up in the groom room (for talking to an Everboy) is... interesting LMAO

5. F is for... fucking nothing? No love spell to show how far Sophie was willing to go + her shallowness, no F for failure. I DO like her outfits that they did as a replacement for the ‘F is for’ outfits, however.

6. Lunchtime lectures. I’m glad we got to see one at least, but why were the 3 witches so delighted to be involved?

7. Speaking of the coven, damn they were sidelined. WHERE WERE ANADIL’S RATS? Her rats which she loves more than anything in the world, her loyal henchmen, the rats she’s known for?? They showed Dot turning something to chocolate ONCE. I was also expecting Dot to be played by a plus sized actress (no shade at all to her actress!), the book specifically describes Dot to be fat.

8. Fingerglow colours...? Where is Sophie’s iconic hot pink? Tedros’s gold. Agatha’s blazing orange that eventually matches Tedros’s?

9. Trial by Tale. Why did they make it out to be something specifically for proving Tedros and Sophie’s love? It happens literally yearly... and the top students at school take part in it, not just two students.

10. I wanted to see Agatha as a cockroach :(

11. August Sader... who? You know, the man whom Agatha describes as being like a father to her? Evelyn Sader’s brother, the man who foresaw events up to the last book. The man who sacrifices himself to defeat the School Master, who helped Agatha the entire time he was alive (and dead).

12. Totally missed the opportunity to show Tedros picking Agatha ‘by accident’ multiple times in their forest classes. The cockroach on the pumpkin, the princesses in the caskets. He picked HER. That shit is delicious.

13. Agatha and Tedros were waaaaaaay too chummy. He throws his rose at her and she is beyond disgusted. She bumps into him and scoffs at him with, you guessed it, disgust. It’s that one act that gets perfect, polished Tedros to have thoughts of self doubt. He kicks around this doll he made to specifically look like Agatha, then shoots it full of arrows while she watches. They HATE each other. They truly do not like each other, which is why it’s so special when they do like, and eventually come to love each other! There was no animosity (except for when he got punched), no tension other than romantic.

14. I think the relationships in this were way too fast. Idk, it might be me + my demisexuality clouding my judgement but I appreciate slow relationships. I do like that they hugged, and that shot of her taking his hands made me giggle and kick my legs like a lovesick schoolboy. But I didn’t have faith in his love confession. Yes, his confession was painfully Tedros-like, but I just didn’t see it... maybe if they had more time to develop their relationship?

15. Same point as before, but with Sophie + Tedros. Him attending her lunchtime lectures, their conversation as foxes, all those extra moments of them together would’ve made their supposed instant connection more believable.

16. Grimm + nemesis dreams. The movie reveals Agatha as Sophie’s nemesis in one line, when the book takes it a lot deeper than that. Sophie has dreams about her, tastes blood, grows warts, has symptoms. Grimm only reinforces how Agatha is Sophie’s nemesis. Nope, we had none of that.

17. No thorns scene. Idk how mental everyone else goes at that scene, but the fact that Tedros comes after Agatha, and she FAINTS in his arms? It’s all about the vulnerability, and the fact that she vehemently denies fainting ever dfjfkdksk it’s a scene that always stuck out to me in the books, and just another moment that adds to Tedros and Agatha’s slowly developing relationship

18. The Evergirls were so... mean. So, so mean. Why, why, why weren’t Kiko and Agatha friends?? Why was Tristan the only other Everboy mentioned..? Like, where’s Chaddick, best friend/brother to Tedros? Nicholas, my beloved. And the other Nevers, like Arachne and Ravan. I’m sure they were there, just not mentioned by name.

19. Werewolves and fairies. Agatha discovers their true origins in that they were once failed students from opposite schools, but they’re just... there in the movie. Speaking of, BANE. Bane the fairy, once a boy of Gavaldon, who saves Agatha’s life and dies doing so.

20. The gargoyle in Merlin’s Menagerie. Agatha yelling at Tedros “he was a boy! A little boy!” and punching him in the face. I know that scene was Gregor’s, but I did miss this scene. And the fact that many people turned animals caused a stampede because they wanted to be freed by her.

21. Why is Honora an evil stepmother? She isn’t even married to Stefan until book 2.

22. Agatha can grant wishes. SHE CAN GRANT WISHES. And that was shown... where?

23. The antisemitism behind Sophie’s witch design. Evil = having a hooked, large nose?? Not to mention how Tedros becoming evil meant having... facial scars?? Literally w h a t

24. Why don’t Sophie and Agatha know about the SGE...? Like, they’ve had kids taken from Gavaldon every four years. The SGE swan emblem is on every single storybook.

25. Swan pins on their uniform? Nope.

26. They separated Good and Evil in their forest classes? That, or Evil just didn’t... have any. Weird.

27. “Good with Good, Evil with Evil. Back to your tower before there’s upheaval.” Or not, seeing as the reflections on the half-way bridge never existed.

28. Agatha mentions ONCE how other people called her ugly growing up. Book Agatha is truly convinced of her ugliness, and how that makes her Evil and unworthy of being loved. She avoids looking in mirrors because she hates her reflection. She thinks it’s about how you look, not what you do. Then Dovey reveals herself as Cinderella’s fairy godmother, they have that wonderful mirror scene and Agatha finds herself smiling, and crying when she realises she was beautiful all along. I would’ve given anything to see that in live action.

29. Agatha’s Cinderella-esque dress was serving. She looked stunning. But I wanted her iconic midnight blue gown with gold leaves, and blue orchid crown. </3

30. No circus of talents. The scene where Tedros asks, “Agatha of Woods Beyond. Will you be my princess for the ball?” Him asking her to choose him, because he had already chosen her long ago. LIKE- not to mention how Agatha’s talent is shown once again, and that bit where the wolves shield Hester from punishment? Just wished we had seen it :’)

This is no shade at all to the actors, they did wonderfully with what they were given. I love that Tedros has brown hair (blond men with blue eyes scare me xoxo). But, as someone who’s had this series with me since I was 11, I was pretty disappointed. I think as a standalone film, it’s not that bad! Some... interesting music choices. Beautiful costume and creature design - I loved the stymphs, they were perfect. But as a book to film adaptation? Just... yikes. Not a fan.

An incomplete list of Lewis Nixon’s roles during the war. ( it’s incomplete because certainly there are more, the following are just what I get from reading Beyond Band of Brothers and the Biggest Brother):

Nix's job titles during the war: Assistant platoon leader of Easy Company - 2d Battalion S-2 (Intelligence Officer)- 506th Regiment S-2 - 2d Battalion S-3 (Operation Officer)

• Briefed the men before the jump

• In Normandy, brought the maps Dick found at Brécourt Manor to Utah Beach

• Brought back two Sherman tanks from Utah Beach to help Dick clear the areas and secure the causeway

• Brought up the 81mm mortars from battalion headquarters company to reinforce Easy in Holland

• Made way back to battalion and brought trucks to help with the withdrawal when Easy was pulling back from Nuenen

Though tightly squeezed and under heavy fire, Easy held its ground. The Germans did not enter Nuenen. As the sky drew dark, Winters, badly outnumbered, finally ordered his men to withdraw. A short distance west of the village, a line of American deuce-and-a-half trucks waited for them, as did Lewis Nixon. He had been with Easy when it ran into the Germans. Knowing Winters would need help, he made his way back to battalion and ordered up the trucks.

"Thought maybe you could use a ride," Nixon said to Winters as his friend approached.

• Checked roadblocks with Dick, when Dick checked one direction Nixon checked the other

• Made rounds and checked on men during the night while Dick did the same during the day

One main difference between the two was the hours they kept. Winters was an early riser. He loved getting up early and getting a start on the day. Nixon was a night owl. He did his best work in the afternoon and at night. When they were out on the line, this proved an ideal arrangement. Winters kept tabs on the men during the day; Nixon made the rounds at night. This kept company commanders on their toes because they never knew when one or the other would show up and expect a status report.

•Accompanied Dick on a battalion inspection tour, but because of the urine incident instead they drove to Nijmegen to look for hot showers

• In Bastogne, Nixon acted as a liaison between battalion and regiment to clear confusion and keep the 2d Battalion out of a lot of trouble.

It is difficult to comprehend the confusion that characterized our first night at Bastogne. No one seemed to know where our boundaries lay, nor did anyone understand our precise mission. Since Colonel Strayer remained at regimental headquarters, I ordered Captain Nixon to locate Colonel Sink's command post and to coordinate with Major Hester, the regimental operations officer, to ensure we had our orders correct. Over the next few weeks, Nixon made many trips back to regiment to keep us informed and to ensure we understood our orders and our boundaries with adjacent units. This system worked well and kept 2d Battalion out of a lot of trouble.

Nix's greatest contribution to the successful defense of Bastogne was serving as a liaison between battalion and regimental headquarters. No man contributed more to keeping the regiment together during the ensuing battle. Nixon performed exceeding well in interpreting regimental orders and coordinating operational support while I positioned myself close to the forward edge of the battle area.

To give you an idea how dedicated Nixon was to the 506th PIR, at Bastogne he had his name drawn from a hat in a lottery that would have given him a thirty-day leave to the United States. Nix refused the offer, saying he wanted to stay with the outfit on the line. How do you explain that kind of dedication? Such devotion is never discussed by the men, but it is never forgotten. At the time, the 506th PIR was very short of men and officers, especially good, proven officers.

The young German Winters captured wasn't the only one confused. Officers on the line were often uncertain about their responsibilities and instructions. Not the least of these befuddled men was Strayer himself.

After attending briefings at regimental or division HQ, Strayer would gather his battalion staff around him and fill them in. Unfortunately, Winters often found Strayer's information vague and confusing. He cast questioning glances at Nixon, who would respond by rolling his eyes. After these briefings, Nixon would walk back to regiment to meet with Major Hester for clarification.

"Strayer had no goddamn idea what he was supposed to do," Winters said sixty years later. "But there's more than one way of skinning a cat, and the system Nixon and I had worked. Nixon did a good job. He kept 2nd Battalion out of a lot of trouble."

• Bitching with Dick about the brass and the army

"You know what this is, don't you," Winters told Nixon after receiving the orders. "Taylor's finally back and now he has to show off for Eisenhower." "Yeah," Nixon replied. "He probably figures we've just been sitting on our asses back there in Bastogne, and now he expects us to go out and kick German butt."

Winters' awareness of Taylor's return was based on firsthand experience. Shortly after the commanding general's arrival, after the siege of Bastogne had been broken, Taylor had visited his men in the field.

While inspecting 2nd Battalion's front, he strode briskly along the line with Winters and the other officers trailing along behind. Finishing, he turned to Winters and said, "Watch those woods in front of you." Then he left. Winters' jaw dropped, then he turned to Nixon.

"'Watch those woods in front of you'? " he said. "What the hell did he think we've been doing while he was back in Washington?"

Now that the men were no longer living outside in the ice and snow, the army saw fit to ship them sixty-one hundred pairs of winter shoepacs, arctic socks, felt insoles and six thousand yards of white cloth, enough to make two thousand snowsuits.

"Oh my, how we could have used them six weeks ago at Bastogne," Winters said to Nixon as he looked at the stacks of cold-weather gear his men no longer needed.

"Guess we should be glad we got them at all," Nixon said wryly. "They could have shipped them to the Pacific."

• Accompanied and drove around with Dick on various occasions in Germany/Austria, including inspecting German surrendered troops, the weapons, the mess hall, etc.

• Being Dick’s close friend, confidant, companion, the one Dick could talk to and unburden himself

As different in temperament as Nixon and I were, he was the one man to whom I could talk. He provided an outlet that allowed me to unburden myself as a combat leader.

the sge movie was terrible. let me tell you exactly why i think it sucked

i think they messed up sophie and agatha's friendship. they were never lovey-dovey or "besties for life!" kind of friends. sophie was using agatha as her "good deed" to get into the school for good and evil, and agatha knew this. from this toxic relationship emerged a real friendship, but not really until they got to the school for good and evil. also, one of sophie's main character traits is that she's a shallow bitch who uses everyone to get what she wants (and we love her for that!), but they completely removed that trait when they made her "besties!!" with agatha.

wishing tree?? hello?? let sophie be obsessed with fairytales!! i know they had to do it for the exposition and for the people who've never read the books but they're not doing her character justice.

agatha's personality?? where did it go?? where did my frumpy, grumpy, sarcastic, witchy teenage girl go?? they barely gave her any of her original personality - she wasn't even slightly grumpy until she went to the school for good and evil.

tedros and agatha's relationship. it was so DRAB. the enemies to lovers banter was barely there!

i love sofia wylie... and i have literally no problem with agatha being a POC, i have to admit that sofia wylie is conventionally attractive. agatha is not supposed to be conventionally attractive. she is the opposite of the beauty standard, which is one of the contrasting traits between her and sophie. if they chose an actress who definitely does not fit the beauty standard and had agatha's whole self-realization plotline, it would have fit much better with the story. again this has nothing to do with sofia wylie being POC, so please don't take that the wrong way.

what happened to the swan crests??

why was the school master shown. like the biggest mystery of the first book is the school master. they ruined all the fun by introducing him at the very beginning.

where's sader? where's princess uma? WHERE IS CASTOR AND POLLUX????

the beast?? where's the beast at?

why was sophie punished for talking to an ever... when they were literally in the same dining room... they ruined her whole transition into evilness by having Lesso cut off her hair instead of the beast.

THE RANKINGS. THEY GOT RID OF THE RANKINGS. WE NEVER GOT TO SEE SOPHIE'S "F IS FOR..." OUTFITS.

also Lesso's character was fucked up. they took evelyn sader's plotline and meshed it with hers and it makes me so mad because it takes away from her future relationship with Dovey and it strips her of her character!

WHY WAS DOVEY LIKE THAT.

um where was the circus of talents?? like was that not the biggest thing that happened in the whole book... soman i'm so disappointed in you.

i liked how they did the trial by tale in the movie but i wish they kept the original plotline.

they did my boy yuba so dirty.

also the forest groups was so annoying to watch. i wanted to see sophie and agatha mingle with tedros in the forest.

wtf is this blood magic stuff. did we all collectively forget that entire thing happened in book 5 (or was it book 4? i don't even remember)

they could've made this a 10-episode TV show so easily. they didn't have to get lawrence fishburne or kerry washington or michele yeoh. they could've given smaller actors/actresses a big platform. if each episode was an hour long, we would've gotten much more than we got in this shitty movie. each season could be 1 book. catch my drift? netflix, you know i'm onto something.

i wanted a groom room scene.

the ever's ball. ugh. they did agatha so dirty.

HER CIRCUS OF TALENTS GOWN WAS REMOVED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CIRCUS OF TALENTS

they did hester so dirty. like where was her witchiness? her superiority complex? her intense and undying love for her coven even though she insults and belittles them constantly?

ANADIL!! where were her rats?? also i think i saw someone else point this out that they could've cast an albino person because she is albino in the books. there's already so little albino representation. and that doesn't mean she can't be black, she could be a black albino person. i did love the girl who played her though.

i wanted more coven scenes.

tedros was not annoying like he was in the book and i was mad about it lmao

agatha and tedros felt so forced!!

that's all i can think of right now. im so mad about the movie that im going to go write an entire screenplay for a 10-episode tv series.

I don't super hate Mia's outfit or anything, but looking at how she dresses casually or when she does vigilante stuff before becoming speedy II for real, she way prefers loose clothing, so her skin tight suit seems kind of.... not what she'd pick? I guess that's somewhat remedied but the cape, but I dunno, I don't think it's what I would have put her in if I were in charge of her suit design.

mhmhm yeah! i love her original suit just for how simple it is, but you make a great point, it's really interesting that one of the original "speedy suit" roughs was much closer to her casual looks (and closer to, as you said, her pre-speedy vigilante fits)

now thats the 2000s baybey! sonic ass shoes

moreover another of them, the one that WAS briefly used (in mia's dream sequence in #11), was pretty skin tight, but it obviously had more padding and shape. to me it feels very reminisent of roy in his arsenal era, no? and, through that, also feels similar to izaakse's current roy design.

there was even a corresponding ollie design to match! (i cant say im exactly sad these didnt come to fruition)

the last one is probably the closest ish to what we ended up with, very classic arrowfam

would've been cool to see mia with the classic arrow gloves, though im not sure about black, red, and yellow in one costume. you gotta wonder what went on behind the scenes for hester to pivot from these kinds of more in depth designs to well, what we ended up with.

i have to wonder what the actual ceo of mia dearden himself thinks of sean's redesign, maybe we'll find out when it actually comes to mia's return.

Nikki's Birthday Live Stream!

Well, Shiny Designers, the Glitter of Wishes live stream has come to an end. And, wow, has it been a treat!

In case you missed it, here's the full itinerary:

A sweet Momo montage! Our favorite kitty gets a new song! Of course he mentions food in it lol

And we get a cute animation sequence of Nikki finding Momo practicing a dance in secret. Who knew Momo was so skilled?

Now, we get into the main part of the live stream. After greeting us, Nikki and Momo have a memory notebook that contains well wishes and gifts from across Miraland... and even from real life!

We visit Cloud Empire first, where the game devs filmed a stunning display of molten iron fireworks! They spent a whole day finding the perfect spot, setting up the smithing tools, and then setting off brilliant sparks. They were incredible to watch!

And then, the first round of giveaways: 12 lucky people will get 12 Sea of Fantasy tickets and 1206 pink gems. (Get it? 12/06 is Nikki's birthday.)

Off to Pigeon Kingdom afterward! A short and cute stop-motion sequence made of clay and felt shows Nikki and Momo having fun with arts and crafts. I wonder how long it took the animators to move the figures frame by frame? Nevertheless, it looks amazing!

The next giveaway code is PIGEONKINGDOM, and it will give 2888 to 5 stylists.

Third stop on our journey is Wasteland, and it offers the most gifts! First, we get Letters from Wasteland, where Vivian, Jiang Beixi, Zoey, Tess, Yisu, and even Queen Hester share memories and wishes for Nikki.

And then, we get a second dance, this time of Nikki in her standard SN dress, the Voice of Desire suit, and the Bloom Up suit as three versions of her dance to Bloom Up! It's all so cute! ^_^

Lastly, we get a quick animation sequence of Momo and his hamster friend grilling (and fighting over) steak. Nikki saves the day in a very sweet way.

Before we go to Ninir Kingdom, the third round of giveaways starts, with the code NINIRKINGDOM offering 5888 pink gems for 2 lucky stylists.

Now in Ninir, we get a glimpse of Nikki's birthday outfit! It's a lovely pink fireworks-themed dress, complete with a crown. You can check out OrangeCatty's blog here for a video and full rundown.

And we get to see our next event: the second Sanrio collab, this time with Kuromi and Pompompurin! Who else can't wait for the adorable animal friends?

haiii uhm. idk if anyone has asked this but what are some of your favorite character costumes/outfits :O

iggy i love and adore you and i love this question. hold on, i have to dig up some images.

okay. i dug up some images. so many, in fact, that i hit image limit on this post and had to trim some things down. let's go through it.

we're gonna just go ahead and start out with dinah lance, the light of my life. this whole post won't be sorted by character, but she's the one i have the most images of, so she gets her own section.

i know people really, really love the short-haired, less effeminate dinah we get in grell's 80s run. i'll get to her! but i'm going to start by saying that her looks in the green lantern/green arrow run are all-time. please consider, if you will, the most fashionable lady in the room:

(i can't include the house robe from snowbirds, but know that i spiritually do count it as part of this post. i hold it near and dear. for now, these two looks will do.)

her long black hair. her little white vest. the statement necklace for her date with ollie. and look, i would include ollie here too, because his outfits in this run are PEAK seventies dad energy, but i don't have the space and i like dinah more, so you get these.

then comes the 80s, when dinah is in her element. short black hair, noir vibes, wearing graphic tees for things like "seattle slugfest." (in longbow hunters, at least.)

she gets some cute looks in grell's run, obviously, but i'm partial to this little skirt and sleeveless denim button-up because it's so very unlike her. she was putting in the work to look cute, and i appreciate it. oliver, meanwhile, looks like fred from scooby doo.

the 1991 run is important because of her extremely high heeled boots with the BIG cuffs around the calves. i miss the cuffs. i wish they would return to me. but the actual panels i think about the most from this run are when she cuts her fishnet stockings and uses them to tie her hair back.

wh. who. i want to know which people in the writer's room decided that was a feasible option. i just want to talk. i can't imagine a less stable hairstyle to go karate-chop some yacht pirates. come on now. but also, she even ties them in a bow? i love her so much. what the fuck is happening.

she has a lot of good looks in birds of prey (1999), honestly, but none of the artists have EVER IN THEIR LIFE seen a woman's chest. not a one. i'm going to go ahead and stick to the two things i love: the fringed leather jacket (iconic) and the long-pants jumpsuit that they did instead of the fishnets.

i don't know WHY they got rid of the fishnets, honestly, but i like this turtleneck situation and the yellow accents. also her communicator necklace on full display <3 she also usually wears a motor jacket OVER the jumpsuit. slay!

(it's maybe a little sacrilegious to like the long pants costume, given that she is so well-known for the bodysuit and fishnets. but to be fair, even when they cut the legs off this suit, she still isn't wearing the stockings. her legs are naked. 0/10 what the HELL.)

sean izaakse deserves his own post and i would not be able to pick out a limited number of panels from his work on green arrow (2023) but i will say i love dinah's new costume, i love the texture on her jacket, and i love that she gets to have the little canary logo on the chest now.

i assume this was more of a birds of prey (2023) design and not izaakse's personal design, but i love how he draws her hair, and she's so short compared to everyone, and overall she just looks good. zero complaints here.

(actually, i do have a few complaints, they just aren't about dinah. one, lian's eyes should be brown. two, ollie should have KEPT HIS HORRIBLE MANBUN, THAT'S MY DAD. and three, mia's cape should still be yellow on the outside. otherwise, the art in this run is perfect.)

speaking of mia.

the art of green arrow (2001) is not like. my favorite art style ever in terms of aesthetics. but hester really, really sets the tone for a lot of these characters through his design choices. particularly mia, which makes a lot of sense given this is her introduction and he did a lot of the initial work with her character.

the thought put into her costuming. she's wearing baggy clothes to contrast with what she wore before she moved in with ollie, she has the hair up in a messy ponytail, etc etc. this mia is everything to me. and i love ollie, too. he looks like a cartoon dad from a nickelodeon show. which is exactly who he is, to me.

we're gonna detour from dc and into marvel for just a second but don't worry we'll come right back. i was really excited when kelly thompson and leo romero were announced for birds of prey (2023) because i really liked their work on hawkeye (2016). it's such a good style for kate bishop, in particular; it feels very youthful and the style just suits her. this is The Kate Bishop, to me, outside of the 2012 run.

(i also really, really like the way dinah is drawn in birds of prey (2023). she's small, she's compact, she looks like someone who's been doing gymnastics and karate her whole life. i could also fit her in my pocket! perfect!!!!)

but yeah okay i mentioned it so i also need to shout out hawkeye 2012. this comic's aesthetics were so fucking on point, and it is one of my favorite ones i've ever edited because it has such an INTENTIONAL color palette and use of graphics like the arrows and bullseyes.

like i know everyone talks about how good this run is but that's because it is LITERALLY that fucking good. the writing. the art. the characterization. ugh. life-changing.

anyway that's enough marvel (for now). back to my hovel. dc.

spiritworld (2023) was so fun. the art is so intentionally drawing on manga and i loved it from the first issue. you can feel the love put into the character design and the color work, and xanthe's cool bomber jacket and undercut is SO essential. this is the nonbinary rep we deserve.

shoutout to cass's look in this comic, too. i LOVE this costume for her. it moves in such a fun and exciting way when she's flipping around and moving through the air, it has a new silhouette, AND it STILL has the bat on the chest. perfect. everything to me. never change.

that being said, i DO have a favorite cass look, and it's these specific panels from batgirl (2000). the style in most of that comic is great, it's super funky and fun, but these were the panels i saw that ended up solidifying in my brain as "oh, that's cass."

also from batgirl (2000) though, i love the funky design choices because they give us things like PEAK takes on stephanie brown's spoiler costume. she's just a fucking blob to me. look at her.

steph has a lot of fun looks, to me, but my favorite will always be the era in like, issues 110-112 of robin (1993), where they gave her a bob cut and big :pleading: emoji eyes.

i do wish she'd had freckles at this time. i know they were a later addition, but i like them. they add character.

unrelated to AAAANY of that, i need to talk about poison ivy (2022). this run is stuuuuuunning. i've only pulled panels of pamela here because i LOVE the way her freak body horror is done, as well as the way her hair is drawn, but the scenery and the textures of this comic as a whole are insane.

even when the story isn't grabbing me, the art does. it's beautiful, it's unlike any other comic i'm reading right now, and it is one of the first comics i ever looked at that made me go, oh fuck, that's an ART piece. ykwim.

HOWEVER. if we're talking about comics that are just. art. through and through. there are a couple others i need to mention.

supergirl: woman of tomorrow is stunning. the colorwork, the hair texture, the EXPRESSIVENESS of the FACES. ugh. this comic made me cry, yeah, but it also made me stroke the pages lovingly because of the beautifully rendered colors.

i love that kara doesn't always look Pretty. i love that she gets bloody, and beat up, and she looks tired and sad and sick sometimes. i love that it is so beautiful and also you can see genuine hurt on kara's face. ugh. UGH. this comic!!!!

now for the indie shit lol. die (2020) is sooooo lovely. stephanie hans is ordinarily a cover artist, but she jumped onto this project to do pages, and my GOD is it beautiful. the character design, the colors, the expressions. it feels like a PAINTING and i want to EAT it.

there's a lot of body horror and gruesome stuff in here. but like, somehow, even that manages to look pretty? i love the painterly textures. i love how the tone influences the colors. it's all just stunning. i need to go reread this one right now, actually.

annnnnnnd! last one, i promise! it's time for THE FORGED (2023).

i love this comic. everyone in it is a lesbian with an atypical body type, half of them are wearing bondage gear, and it's all set in a space sci-fi setting with more lore than you can shake a stick at.

and on TOP of all of THAT. LOOK HOW BEAUTIFUL THE COLORS ARE.

there are a few honorable mentions i don't have room to include images of, so i'm gonna go off and list them now:

the wild west arc of exiles (2012) in that very painterly style

the scenery and background work in wonder woman: the hiketeia

the INCREDIBLY clean lines and sharp colorwork of dan mora in world's finest (2023)

the super sketchy and rough pencil-esque art in the back half of green arrow/black canary (especially mia! i love her!)

i am sorry but i enjoy the very sharp style of batgirls (2022). i don't necessarily endorse the writing or the story of the run, but i think the shapes are good. sorry. take me out back, i know.

young justice (1998) also has very cute cartoony art!! i haven't read much of it yet, but every time i see it, it makes me smile. which is the point, i think?

OKAY. PHEW. do you regret asking me yet, gobby. did you get what you came for. am i welcome to come yell at you about the forged (2023) and die (2020) until the day we both shed this mortal coil and depart for the great beyond.

Some sge trailer pics + thoughts

A moment to appreciate Beatrix's outfit and overall visuals. Yeah. Dot and Anadil are also looking amazing in the background. (I'm going to have so much beef with Anadil's outfits later on, so prepare for that lol) And Beatrix's actress is doing such a great job, the expressions are so on point. She just has the pure confidence aura around her and I love it.

Also this is a gorgeous scene. Despite Sophie being stabbed, yk.

And like?? The usage of the Gavaldon dress? Because Sophie probably spent so much effort to make it look as princess-like as possible and planned to look the best she could and then she lands in the wrong school and her dreams are ruined just like the dress.

I also feel like they removed the wolf from Doom room for some reason with Lady Lesso taking his place? I definitely want to see what they're going to do with that.

Love the pure dramaticness of it. And seems like the Coven has gained another member?

(Also, what is happening with Anadil's dress. Come on, the designers could have done so much better)

I'm pretty sure this is happening at Trial by Tale? Which means Tedros is actually there with the Excalibur and uses it? Maybe we'll be getting some cool fighting scenes with him in them, because he kinda didn't do shit in the books lol

Also, I guess we're getting more Hort, but his personality seems changed a lot? The trailer might be misleading, but it seems they're going more for the bad boyish kinda insane vibe, so I'm definitely curious.

If you look closely, you can see him always hanging around with the Coven, which might be a coincidence, or they might be going to make them friends? idk man
