hi!! so this isn't actually the case as while gourdy was briefly mentioned in a trial, said trial had nothing to do with whether or not gourdy was "real" per se as much as. well. murder, actually. while gourdy WAS found out to be an inflatable steel samurai this was not brought up in the case at all as the veracity of gourdy wasn't really as relevant as the fact that the witness was looking for gourdy rather than at the murder she claimed to have seen. plus this was also a relatively small part of a MUCH larger trial which for those interested not only solved the dl-6 case but ALSO marked the end of prosecutor von karma's ~40 year long record and the court records are really a fascinating read through!!

All the cutscenes show the characters wearing their suits even in completely casual situations where they wouldn't need to so I was thinking about Why They Would Do That:

Phoenix: Wears his suit all the time because he's reached the point in his life where he expects to be pulled into a case at all times and doesn't feel like constantly going back home to change. It's more of an insurance policy than anything. The only reason he has it buttoned is to disguise the ketchup stain Maya got on his fancy white shirt since he refuses to buy another one

Edgeworth and Franziska: Were taught by the von karma creed to be professional looking at all times. Unfortunately this is their idea of professional

Simon: Wears the same fit he did on the day of his arrest to "remind himself of his sins" and also because the jacket is really comfy and has big pockets that he hides things in

The new trilogy means we finally got official French translations of the fifth and sixth games (the fourth already had one) so I did my thing and played through them, since they're always a lot of fun. Here are some things about French Dual Destinies I thought you might like to know:

Yes, it's set in France as per usual. They are all French people who live in Paris. And yes, that means that in this universe there is a Japanese village themed around yokai within throwing distance of Paris.

Athena lived in America in this version, and therefore peppers her speech with English and Spanish. My favourite unhinged franglais line was "let's get au travail" which I will be using from now on because it's hilarious

Many characters got French pun names again. Simon's name is "Jack Lamenoire" -- Jack, because the French version of Simon Says uses the name Jack/Jacques, and "lame noire" means "black blade". (Also he's not British or anything in this version, he just speaks in somewhat old-timey French.)

He has multiple nicknames for the judge that are all slight variations of "Your Baldness". He doesn't do that "-dono" suffix thing but he does refer to Phoenix in particular as "Maître Wright".

...I don't like pointing out things I didn't like buuuuuut his voice is a huge downgrade. Actually, to be honest, I don't like the new French voices that much in general... idk man they just don't sound very enthusiastic...

Filch's name is "Arsène Loupet", reference to the famous fictional thief Arsène Lupin, which I thought was pretty cool! (Herlock Sholmes was also a reference to that series too btw!)

Athena and Apollo use informal pronouns for each other pretty much from the get-go, but there have been some changes from the previous games: Phoenix now uses the informal "tu" for Apollo (and Athena) whereas in the prev game he didn't, Pearl now uses "tu" for Phoenix as well, and Klavier uses "tu" for Apollo now (but Apollo still calls him the formal "vous" lmao)

SPEAKING OF... SPEAKING OF. The French localisation continues to utterly baffle me when it comes to Klavier (or Konrad as he's called in French). No listen, liSTEN. In the previous game he was specifically stated to be English and did his law exams in England and dropped English words into his speech (and this is still the case in the trilogy version, I checked). But now?? They seem to have gone back on it and in this game he says he's German again, like the in English translation??? But he's still dropping English words into his speech randomly????? Look I already went through the five stages of grief when I found out they'd english-ified him, I made my peace with it, and NOW they change it???????

God and his new French voice sucks too (his old one was actually good)... what have they done to you my poor boy, was making you English not bad enough T_T Oh and he and Athena didn't even get their little language club moment where they both start speaking in the same foreign language?? Like, that just straight-up didn't happen here and I had been waiting for it aauuugh it's cool it's fine it's cool i'm okay i'm--

True to Dual Destinies fashion, there are still typos. In an emotional moment, Apollo took a leave of asbence from the office. Not absence. Asbence.

I can't put my finger on it but Robin's coming out scene felt more... respectful in French? The English translation was done over a decade ago so it feels somewhat dated, maybe that's why... I obviously don't know if she was purposely written to be a trans girl but she very much comes across that way, and it feels like the French translators were aware of that interpretation and took it into account, idk maybe it's just me

THEY GOT RID OF MY FAVOURITE LINE. THE FORESHADOWEY ONE WHERE SIMON TELLS ATHENA THAT THE PERSON SHE WANTS TO SAVE MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD DOESN'T DESIRE HER DEFENCE, AND HE'S CLEARLY TALKING ABOUT HIMSELF. THE FRENCH MADE HIM SAY SOMETHING ELSE WAY LESS COOL. I don't wanna be like "FRENCH TURNABOUT ACADEMY IS DEAD TO ME" because most of it was awesome, but man these occasional things made me wanna flip tables

Cosmic Turnabout and Turnabout for Tomorrow were great in French though, so there's that. Clay's French name is "Pierre" which worked surprisingly well because it means stone or rock, and the moon rock was also called that, so like, the phantom had to kill Pierre in order to get the pierre... idk it worked and it was cool

Simon and Athena switch to using informal pronouns for each other very near the end of the game, in the scene where they work together to psychologically mess with the phantom. It's around the time when they start openly calling each other by first name since everyone knows now that they're old friends.

Phoenix and Edgeworth also occasionally refer to each other by first name in this game, which threw me off completely. (Reminder that Edgeworth's French name is "Benjamin Hunter". Just picture Phoenix standing in front of Edgeworth and calling him BENJAMIN. Now you understand how absolutely bizarre it felt.)

Klavier Gavin was a man of habit.

Wake up. Climb out of bed. Take a hot shower to wake himself up. Make himself a cup of coffee and a piece of toast. Maybe play some chords to get the fingers moving. And sure he could shake things up when the need arose. You had to be decently flexible when you were on tour, but still, whenever he had the chance to fall back into routine, he took it. He thrived on it.

The first night that Apollo Justice stayed in his bed, though, he’d had to shake routine up, just a little bit.

“I can’t believe this, we’re going to be late!” Apollo groaned, scrambling for his clothes as a tired Klavier rubbed his face. “You have a spare toothbrush, right? Shit, and we both need to shower.”

“Achtung. I certainly don’t mind showering together, mein Liebling,” Klavier crooned, leaning in, and Apollo perked up.

“Right, that’s smart,” Apollo mused, tapping his forehead. “Hmm, maybe I can just brush my teeth in the shower too.”

“...ah. Ja, I…ja.” Well, Klavier didn’t really have the heart to correct Apollo on his intentions, so he simply followed the man into the bathroom.

Apollo was a whirlwind of movement as Klavier began getting ready to shower. How on earth did he have all this energy so early in the morning? Klavier watched in amusement for a moment or two, before turning.

“Why do you have like eight shampoos?” Apollo asked, inspecting the many hair care products lining the stall as he finally made his way into the shower.

“Well, I can’t look this good with two-in-one, ja?” Klavier smirked, stepping into the spray, letting the hot water massage his back as he shut his eyes. “Being beautiful requires work, you know.”

“Jeez, you’re a regular primadonna, huh?”

Klavier scoffed. “And what is that supposed to—”

There was a hand on his scalp. He jumped, eyes snapping open as Apollo jerked back.

“Oh, shit, sorry, I didn’t get it in your eyes, did I?”

For a moment, Klavier could only blink. “...Nein,” he answered eventually, inclining his head with a smile. “Sorry, go ahead.” Apollo let out a breath of relief, reaching up and beginning to lather up Klavier’s head once more.

It was…strange. Sleeping with Apollo had been an adventure, but waking up with him, well, now that was something completely new. Klavier’s eyes drifted shut again, a pleasant tingling on his scalp where Apollo washed his hair. Not what he’d had in mind when he suggested a shower, but somehow, this felt even more intimate.

“Well hey, don’t make me do all the work,” Apollo muttered sullenly. “We’re on a tight schedule, remember?”

“Ach, my apologies,” Klavier said, and he grabbed some shampoo.

-thanks to his modeling gigs clay starts getting conscious of his wardrobe; not in a "god did I really wear this" way, more like "(looks at one of his favorite outfits) wow this doesn't match at all. I'm wearing it anyway"

-he has a collection of ugly sweaters. not even specifically for christmas, just a bunch of the worst sweaters apollo's ever laid eyes on

-the light blue shirt/navy blue suit ensemble was one of the first outfits he modeled in. outside of photoshoots he only wears it when he's going to the courthouse, though it obviously still doesn’t really adhere to the dress code (at least he tucks in the shirt. already an improvement over klavier)

-his favorite color is indigo blue (I had to research this btw. no two sources agree on what indigo blue actually is, which is...really helpful lol. anyway the shade he likes is more blue than purple)

-the kind of assistance trucy asks for is backstage/behind the scenes stuff, like managing lights. so clay is at the shows most nights but not actually in front of the audience, making his public appearances on the stage with trucy rare. after cleanup he (and apollo, if he’s there) accompanies trucy home if phoenix isn’t around

-clay and apollo meet edgeworth earlier, sometime between aa4 and aa5, at one of trucy’s shows. clay struggles to keep a straight face when he first sees the jabot but is otherwise perfectly polite in front of the chief prosecutor/phoenix’s boyfriend-not-husband-yet-apparently

-definitely buys accessories for orion. apollo (jokingly) swears orion dresses better than him

-klavier tries to teach clay guitar at some point, and to klavier’s surprise he turns out to be hopelessly abysmal at it

after that last diatribe i owe everyone a short one. apollo ace attorney. yeah he's a little awkward, reasonably easily flustered, sometimes insecure, and a big nerd. but he's not shy. that guy is uptight, vain, and full of occasionally unearned bravado. no he will not shy away from asking someone out because he thinks he's not good enough. if anyone's stammering and blushing it's klavier. i've gotten this wrong before. i never will again. i love him.

this is a general one not limited to one fandom but sometimes. there are big fics that everybody touts as the best the fandom has to offer and then the characterisation in that fic informs every bit of fanon in the rest of the whole fandom. and sometimes. those fics. are wrong.

12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

in honour of me picking up ffxv again i'm gonna say gladiolus. i don't know how unpopular he is now but i definitely saw my fair share of people screaming about hooow meeeaaaan he is baww. there's a pattern in me picking up very angry characters and going "YOU JUST DON'T GET HOW DEEP THEY ARE" but for real. you just don't get how deep he is. (neither did square btw given how fucking badly they shafted him in dlc.)

this is recycling a tweet i made when i was like 18 and typically i can't look at anything i said more than six months ago without cringing off the face of the earth but i was right about this one. the other three ffxv guys manifested their struggles and coping mechanisms in ways which were easy to woobify and sympathise with but gladio's way of dealing with shit was to get mad about it so he could hang on to some semblance of control in his life. that's uglier and less uwu-able than weeping gently in a bottomly fashion, so people didn't like him. well too bad. more for me.

to start keep in mind i have only played the pwaa trilogy and like the first 1.5 cases in apollo justice so thats all ive got to go off of in terms of firsthand knowledge

ok i think miles and franziska have that type of relationship thats like "don't even look at me or i'll kill you" but they are also siblings which means tickles whether you like it or not ok. thats the facts

they couldn't do it when von karma was around though cause i feel like he'd yell at them for messing around or something

they've both grown out of it a bit but they're both still ticklish if you get the right spots

speaking of siblings. phoenix and maya

theyre siblings in my eyes okay

maya forces nick to buy a wii or something so she can kick his ass in mario kart

shes def the type to say "i let you win <3" when she loses

when she's losing she'll reach over and jab phoenix in the ribs to make him mess up so she can get ahead

phoenix tries doing it back and shes like "unfortunately for you i'm not ticklish!!" which works for a while until phoenix finds her spots

then she's fucked

only like three people alive know that edgeworth is ticklish

first is franziska who only uses it when Absolutely Necessary (making him pay for their meal is very necessary, okay)

i like to think they have a more civil relationship than they do. sue me

second is phoenix. found out when they were kids and suddenly remembered it one day and wanted to see if it still worked (it did)

and third is gumshoe. he'll poke edgeworth's sides when he looks particularly grumpy and miles threatens to cut his salary again

i just know gumshoe gives good hugs. like okay they're awkward and he doesn't really know what he's doing but i think a hug from him would cure me

phoenix's favourite hobby is tickling miles because he Loves seeing him happy and smiling, especially since it's such a rare sight

miles acts like he hates it but he'll always tolerate it

as long as he's allowed to get phoenix back that is

klavier thinks it's So fun to tease apollo cause he turns red really easily and klavier finds it very entertaining

he'll hover his hands over apollo's stomach and just laugh at him

klavier's not as ticklish but apollo will still get him back sometimes

if he's being particularly annoying he just grabs him and digs into his hips

trucy is a traitor. she'll tell klavier "polly's knees are really bad btw" and pretends she's done nothing wrong

phoenix has to deal with his two kids just chasing each other around the offices because they're always in the middle of a tickle fight

oh btw my ACE ATTORNEY dual destinies post game review. LONG RAMBLE CHOCK FULL OF SPOILERS BELOW.. BEWARE!!!!!

ok SO. ending-wise it was fucking awesome. funnily enough while me and sal were on our own between playtime we ended up both getting spoiled on fulbright dying and something odd happening to him. On accident. So we both kind of knew what was coming, but not how or why. and id say it actually didn't take away from the surprise considering by the point you really hammer down on it, it's pretty obvious imo LOL. ALL the disguises threw me for a fucking LOOP!! i was like. Huh??? THIS GUY??? ironically all the big ones he did before the breakdown were ALL characters i voiced which was really really fun for me. i think the choice to have him impersonate phoenix last was so cool and the new sprites he gets RULE SO HARD. genuinely thought it was sick as hell. i miss you bobby every day of my life

something really funny that occurred was : Throughout the entire game sal decided they HATED Simon blacjquill. like genuine vitriol at seeing him. when we found out he was on deaths door they were like KILL HIM‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ OT WAS SO FUNNY. but by the end of the game they did nearly a complete 180 on him and he was the first character they doodled after finishing the game.Thwy were sooooo mad about liking him now

speaking of liking characters: my top fave new characters were DEFINITELY bobby fbright & damien tenma. i already talked about fulbright yadda yadda he's cute yadda yadda need him expoditiously yadda yadda cool ending. Damien on the other hand was the only side character that we were consistently SO happy to see literally EVERY time. (Excluding Bobby). Dude fucking rocks he's so weird and he owns. Cawwww caw caw caw

casewise i think the weakest might have been the monstrous turnabout? even though i LOVED damien the rest of the case was. It was okay? but with the rest of the cases being so interconnected jt just felt kind of out of place. hypocritically i found jinxie and filch and labelle kind of annoying despite liking damien... eye dee Kay. My Opinion. my fav case was the very last one i think. i would say it was the academy one but means just felt like a kinda weak villain. especially since it felt really obvious from the beginning with his whole shtick (which was ALSO annoying) and also his whole. Him. but i liked the whole bit with scuttlebutt & the trio. it was very cute. Also elephant in the room, robin, i felt DEFINITELY could have been handled better. but it really wasn't THAT bad, and i like that he retained her like, testosterone rage screaming despite him "getting revealed". In my beautiful mind they're gender fluid. Smiles serenely. it was also nice seeing klavier again but his 3d model is NOT DOING HIM WELL . i like his gay little intro animation though

oh yeah and the 3d. since we were playing the original trilogy concurrently to dd, we got to compare how the characters look pretty often and i found that it's kind of weird, but i understand why it was done & honestly it allowed them to do more fun stuff. like having bobby wave out of the window or all the shit with recreating the silhouette of the statue was REALLY fun to see and I thought it was cute as hell. Simon does look like he's poking himself in the eye though. the normal art in the game was cute too & i thought the cutscenes were fun when they showed up!

comparing it to the original trilogy, without rose tinted lenses of nostalgia & with direct referencing via.... playing them both at the same time... i really think it was a solid game. one thing i really, really liked about it vs the trilogy is that it's a lot more... easier?? straightforward?? it's hard to put into words but i NEVER felt like i had hit a dead end in investigating and didn't know where to go. the notes system as well as the button to look back at recent dialogue are SUPER helpful, and even if i might not have used them All the time, they really helped when we needed them lol. i LOVE. not having to present every single piece of evidence to a random during investigations and just PRAYINF that one of them make something happen. and especially since i was playing with someone else, and therefore took what could be week + long breaks between playtime, it was really useful to get back into the swing of things. ANYWAYS

Overall it was a really fun & engaging play!! me & sal enjoyed it a lot and it's got our gears turning and steam smokin and shit. we actually finished the second game right before finishing the last case of dd and it was fucking awesome. we started trials & tribulations (one case in!) and after that we might hit up the investigations games... and THEN we'll play spirit of justice. so that's the game plan teehee
