The artist was already so popular in his own lifetime the King of Spain forbade the removal of his paintings from the country. In his art Murillo continued the traditions of Realism, features of which revealed themselves most fully in his genre paintings. The best of these include his depictions of the street urchins of Seville, his own native city. In this Boy with a Dog, produced early in the artist’s career, we can sense a slight note of sentimentalism, although it does not have the idealization coupled at times with sugariness that appeared in the artist’s late works. Murillo managed to splendidly convey the lively, eloquent facial expression of the street boy turning to a dog that has attached itself to him. This work has a companion piece – Girl with Flowers and Fruit that is now in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The two works are linked by both composition and content. Действительно, эта работа президента Королевской академии искусств в Лондоне привлекает своей интимностью и лиричностью. Богиня красоты и любви Венера кокетливо закрывает рукой лицо от нескромных взглядов. Амур, шаловливый малыш, тянет за концы голубого шелкового пояса, внимательно наблюдая за матерью. Классицизм искусства Рейнолдса здесь выступает во всем своем своеобразии. Художник переосмысливает наследие античной культуры не через непосредственное изучение "антиков", а через опыт великих мастеров прошлого, особенно фламандцев и Рембрандта. Рейнолдс решающее значение придавал колориту, считая, что именно цвет, и прежде всего теплая цветовая гамма, создает эмоциональный строй произведения. Холодные же цвета (в данном случае голубые ленты) используются для усиления теплых тонов или контраста с ними. Возможно, прототипом для образа Венеры послужила известная красавица Эмма Гамильтон, возлюбленная адмирала Нельсона. Carysfort, who visited Russia on a number of occasions, asked the artist to make the copy as a gift for Prince Grigory Potyomkin. In this work of charming but sensuous intimacy - Reynolds originally suggested it should be called "Half Consenting" - the goddess of beauty and love, Venus, is a coquettish young woman, hiding her face from immodest glances with her arm. Mischievous Cupid is pulling at the end of the blue silk ribbon which encircles her waist, looking attentively up at his mother to watch her reaction. It is possible that the model for the original painting was Emma, Lady Hamilton, famous as the mistress of Lord Nelson. #hermitage_museum #visit_hermitage
