Some of my faves are the gulper eel, vampire squid, barreleye, blood comb jellies, the ghost shark aka the chimera shark, dumbo octopus, I think the glass octopus lives in the midnight zone. uhhhhhh theres more but i cant think rn.

Anyways the deep ocean is my favorite part of the ocean I love it its so cool and has so many cool guys. Like tripod fish those fuckers. I love them.

so what's crabfic and how'd it get the name?😺

omg hi yes crabfic my beloved... it is my character study type fic about sinclair and their gender issues in the months leading up to that christmas and how they intertwine with the fears of the prosthetics surgery and growing up <3 centering around the relationships they have with their sister and of course demian and kromer

it is slow going but i think it's about half done - kinda unsure how to end it bc well. part of it is is the simple fact the gender issues go unresolved for much longer. but it's been really fun to be so self indulgent with it, it's truly my ideal little world of headcanons and themes I want to see explored. really love how well demian's "i want to see your full potential be realized" thing works in the context of giving increasingly weird, metaphorical advice about this and kromer being a source of both envy and doubt in sinclair as they have very mixed feelings on wanting to be more like her while she also wants sinclair to be, well, her sinclair and so she causes a lot of their self hatred <3 yayyy~ limbus making kromer a girl was so great bc i think sinclair being drawn to the world of darkness And getting weird gender envy from her is just so good... and then they also made her an insufferable fascist so she's also transphobic To Me and it all feels so in line with sinclair's character to get roped into All That Nonsense on their journey of self discovery

the crab thing comes from the fact i believe all my fics need some weird thing for demian to go wikipedia boyfriend mode about and in this one it is hermit crabs. using them as a metaphor for moving forward in life and how picking how you want to move forward doesn't have to be a permanent choice that has the ability to ruin everything - instead the crabs can pick from their shells and if they're not comfortable they can find another one with no harm done and the only thing that will hurt them is refusing to acknowledge that they are outgrowing their past. demian is doing his best to urge sinclair forward but both of them are doing a weird little dance around each other where sinclair still doesn't want to talk about their fears of the surgery and demian doesn't want to reveal he Knows everything more or less. really funny convo happens at some point where Demian is like ^^ oh don't let your fear of your family's reaction stop you, after all they could just all die one day and then what would you do? and Sinclair is like ._. uhm. I don't want to think about that. actually.

sighs wistfully... i love you demisin... world's funniest couple ever, weirdest little nonbinary bisexuals in the world. I've had to cut out many bits that get too romantic bc I'm trying to keep it away from being too shipfic-y i want it to stay more sinclair focused but like of course demian is like "i have a non normative experience with gender myself, (5 minute ramble about gender and crabs)" and sinclair is like (so in love it physically hurts) "would you love me if i was a worm hermit crab?"

My unorganized thoughts after finishing The Dragon Prince season 5

Finished binging the season!!! I loved it. It dragged in places and that stupid fucking lemur thing is still the bane of my existence but I loved the character development and plot beats! I also loved seeing more of Terry. He has something deeply wrong with him <3. Also liked Viren completing his redemption arc, though I would have preferred the resurrection spell actually require Claudia to sacrifice herself or at least like sacrifice a limb or something to truly complete Viren's arc. He has no attachment to that fuckin homunculus thing, and his reasoning for not killing it being that "Dark magic led Claudia down a dangerous path, I'm not doing any more dark magic" is a little weak. I do appreciate that the way they did it gave us a whole scene of Aaravos talking about "our child" with Viren, peak evil gay, but it did a disservice to Viren's redemption arc. I get that it was kinda the only way, since Aaravos knows Viren would never hurt one of his actual kids at this point in his arc, but still. I also am really interested in how Zubeia being corrupted goes, how Claudia losing her leg goes, and what's up with that magic pearl. Is that really Aaravos's prison? Or is that the key to his prison? Loved Callum struggling with what he's willing to do under pressure to save those he loves, and how that's contrasted with Claudia, who's kind of a dark mirror for who he could become if he can't learn to let go of those he loves. Loved the reveal that he used dark magic to save Rayla in the Sea Legs episode. Also just really liked Finnegrin, he's a great character and I love his design. Love a ruthless evil pirate who wants revenge on the Archdragon of the Ocean for killing his beloved hermit crab, who keeps pet hermit crabs all over his office, and who has a neckline low enough to kill god. I also love Elmer! What the fuck is his deal though. Are there just plant trolls in Xadia now? Not opposed, just wanna know.

I also really loved Soren this season! I like how his kindness and unwavering faith in others is his greatest strength. Very sweet. That man is the One True Himbo. Dumb, strong, and most importantly, kind. Fucking LOVED seeing Tidebound elves this season. I've wanted to see ocean elves since season one! Fuck yeah! Janai and Amaya are so cute together. Same with Terry and Claudia, love a good fucked up couple. He's just like "I can fix her" and she's just like "No you can't but you CAN join me in my insanity." Callum and Rayla go back and forth for me; sometimes they're really sweet, but sometimes they seem almost forced and I'm just like... can't they be BFFs? Or in a QPR? I feel like it would fit better than a romance TBH. I also love how Villads was 1000% willing to get his hand chopped off for a few kids he met once three years ago. My kind of dude. Fuck that General lady, also. Like, how is Karim worth betraying your entire people and possibly ruining the future of your whole society?? Does he kiss you on the forehead sometimes? Please get better judgment you are literally a judge on the High Court. Also what is up with the Sunfire high priest? He's clearly hiding what's most likely a corrupted wound but why? And why side with Karim? I loved Kim'dael. Love an emo vampire lady with sapphic energy who could kill a man with her fingernails (literally). I like how she isn't strictly evil and has a clear goal that she acts toward with logic. She wants to be freed from her mercy debt so she can drink the blood of anyone she wants, and she acts with logic toward that goal. I still CANNOT wait for them to finally free Runaan from the coin. Honestly Rayla's parents come second for me because we just don't know them as people. But like. I wanna see the cut to Ethari standing over the pool and seeing Runaan's life lily rise to the surface again. I will cry and that is a promise.

Also, that bit where Janai has a nightmare where Aaravos tells her that her great-grandmother's fate was that Aaravos "swallowed her"??? Why are half the lines out of Aaravos's mouth innuendos. Is it the VA's voice? Does it just compel people to write his characters like that? Or is Aaravos just Like That as a person.

I mean like. Aarvos also flirts needlessly with Viren every chance he gets. Not even for manipulation because Viren is not into him, he's just incapable of not acting like that. Viren is definitely gay though. Like definitely. Even my cishet brother could tell in that scene where Viren is having a dark magic-induced fever dream about Harrow. Like oh you *liked him* liked him. Sure had a funny way of showing it, Mr. Kill The Princes. Anyway. Yeah that's my thoughts on The Dragon Prince season 5! Cannot wait for seasons six and seven, I'm sure they will be so cool.

with rafayel… honestly they arent together yet BUT that isnt gonna stop him from trying to spend the day with her in a romantic-but-also-not way while he’s trying to gauge how exactly she feels about him! he has her joining him on the beach and has managed to turn their ‘seashell gathering for pigment making’ into a beach date where theyre just messing with each other in the water after she pushes him in bc of something he said that flustered her. then theyre somehow competing on who’d make a better sand castle (its dola), sharing popsicles, looking for hermit crabs and other little critters along the shore… watching the sunset while sitting really really close to each other…

Hi Anon, I assume the fic you read was Little Birds by winterhill? If not you should definitely get on that right away :D

This list got much longer than I expected and there's an inordinate number of cat!Charles fics for some reason lol. Anyway, all of these fics are amazing and feature either one or both as animals (or inanimate objects, yes read the teacups it's a personal favorite of mine!). I did not include anything about werewolves or satyrs/fauns in this list because there are TONS and would easily fill their own rec lists.

Yeah I get you, I added another tag but I must have deleted it by accident—I had also said something like “You’d just have to do research on which fish are compatible with the crab you want to get.”

I’ve read that fish that swim around the top of the tank are best bc they don’t risk getting hurt by the crab at the bottom

And some crabs are more aggressive than others and some have more picky water parameters so you’d just have to do research to see what would work for your tank :) but it is def possible

It’s been a strange, novel week for me. On Monday, I moved into a new studio to work on my art, a shared space full of new people and things. I found the place via attending regular kroki/life drawing sessions every week in the city, also a new thing I picked up. 2023 I will not be a little hermit crab, and try to be social.

I was, to be honest, incredibly self-conscious about being there, and my usual awkward self. I drew birds a lot to cope, until I felt more at ease. (Birds are very forgiving little things.) 

I assumed it was meant for Very Serious Artists who didn’t have a lot of drawings of beloved blorbos hidden in their portfolio. I also felt a bit of a fraud, like I didn’t deserve to be there. I then met the resident artists, and found I wasn't surrounded by people who would judge me, but fellow nerds with video game tattoos, and ones who liked and encouraged my art. I've been pegged for the neuro-divergent nerd I am, and I’m now comfy enough to draw what the hell I like in the space I pay for.

For my patrons, a thousand thanks for your patience. You've been very kind for what is essentially a week of me nervously drawing birds and naked people instead of working on your commissions. I feel much more comfy in my skin in the studio, and normal service will resume tomorrow.

I am very glad I did this and tried the new thing, as I feel I'm on the cusp of something being there. Thank you again for everyone who has supported my art ether by commissioning me, encouragement, even reblogs. It’s actually helped get me to a place I never thought I’d go to.

Hello I, @clone-anon, am the one who sent you the ask about the hermit crabs. I have been under the weather and in a fevery type phase I woke up and thought I should send it. I don't really have a story about it, so apologies for not having a ficlet to send at this time, but I do have some headcanons. Like Tech would love the Chesapeake Bay and would talk about brackish water and the different species living in it and how the dumbass settlers used to fire canonballs into the bay to make it easier for the ships to get through and he would know a lot about the Oyster Wars and then would talk about oysters. I also think he would find Assateague Island interesting and not just for the wild horses.

Three seconds before the arrival of J. B. Hobson’s letter, I no more dreamed of chasing the unicorn than of trying for the Northwest Passage. Three seconds after reading this letter from the honorable Secretary of the Navy, I understood at last that my true vocation, my sole purpose in life, was to hunt down this disturbing monster and rid the world of it.

Wow, this is so relatable. Not caring about something until the option presents itself to you and then its your sole purpose in life! 

I wanted nothing more than to see my country again, my friends, my modest quarters by the Botanical Gardens, my dearly beloved collections! 

Yup, I love a naturalist! I love that Aronnax lives by the Botanical Gardens?! Just wants to get home to see his collections!? Is he a blorbo already?

Classifying was everything to him, so he knew nothing else.

I love Conseil already as well! I feel like their dynamic is giving a bit of a naturalist Bertie Wooster and Jeeves dynamic if a bit more serious and the ages flipped? I don’t know I’ve only had them for two paragraphs. Also this line about classifying is making me think of all those analyses of Seward as the observer. I feel like there is more to Conseil being versed in classification.

The lad was thirty years old, and his age to that of his employer was as fifteen is to twenty. Please forgive me for this underhanded way of admitting I had turned forty.

Ha! Aronnax is so funny? Like the writing is very straight forward and descriptive and then there are these just hilarious little turns of phrase? It wasn’t really what I was expecting! Compared to a lot of the other substack narrators I feel like Aronnax knows he funny or is trying to be humorous? 

But Conseil had one flaw. He was a fanatic on formality, and he only addressed me in the third person—to the point where it got tiresome.

I suspect I was right with my Jeeves comparison. 

There was good reason to stop and think, even for the world’s most emotionless man.

Aronnax packs in much the same way I pack.

Conseil did them in a flash, and I was sure the lad hadn’t missed a thing, because he classified shirts and suits as expertly as birds and mammals.

Everything about Conseil is the most stereotypical manservent character and yet I cannot help but be obsessed. 

“With all due respect to master,” Conseil replied, “as comfortable as a hermit crab inside the shell of a whelk.”

What a statement! I have to say I agree with Conseil on this one.

So far I’m enjoying 20,000 Leagues more than I thought I would? I don’t know why I doubted because every single substack has been good and I love the ocean and ocean adventure. The Conseil and Aronnax dynamic is so Jeeves and Wooster and I love it!
