Goodbye, Tumblr

So I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while. After the ban, engagement on this website plummeted and it got quite demotivating. A year later and it’s even worse. For example, my recent bakudeku comic has 1200 likes on instagram and SIX NOTES here on tumblr. My kirikami piece got 94 likes + 34 retweets on twitter, and FIVE notes here, despite the fact that I have barely a hundred  followers there and nearly 500 here.

What really put the nail in the coffin, however, is an issue that started more or less the day the ban was announced, December of 2018.

Despite not having a single flagged post, this blog mysteriously disappeared from search- no marking as nsfw or anything, it was just as if I had enabled “hide from search” when I hadn’t. If you tried to send a post to this blog via messages, it wouldn’t come up. Search the url in search? You had to hit “go to...” to get to the blog (which doesn’t imply the blog exists at all). In addition, nothing I posted would show up in tags or search. 

I spent hours scouring the tumblr support faqs to no avail. I sent a help request to tumblr after a week or two. They took four weeks to reply, only to send me the “Showing up in search” page that didn’t solve my problem at all. I replied to them explaining that this wasn’t my problem, and never got a response. So I sent another help request and didn’t get a response to that one at all.

I kind of gave up, but at that point it was hurting my self esteem quite a bit. My blog just WOULDN’T grow or get followers, and it was getting harder to tell myself that it was the platform’s fault, not anything wrong with my art. But I stayed, and kept posting, trying to get through it.

Sometime around May, my blog miraculously appeared in search again!! I was pretty excited about this, but still nothing happened. And then in August, it disappeared again.

I was fed up and contacted support again. They once again gave me a vague unhelpful reply about “it’s algorithms!! Just because you don’t see your posts doesn’t mean no one will :)” so I replied and explained very explicitly that NO. That is NOT my problem. This time I actually got a response (it was after Tumblr’s ownership had changed, so I had more faith in them), and they told me to clear my browser cache (putting the blame off of themselves, and onto my browser- when the screenshots I provided were in the app). I explained once again “no this is not it” and they finally said they were passing the issue to their engineers to look into it, and later sent me a status update that their engineers were actively working on it.

Finally, in mid October, my blog appeared! I figured the issue was fixed and I could finally just post and relax. I did notice an uptick in notes and follows, though of course nothing like pre-ban tumblr. 

I thought it was an issue that was completely resolved and I would never have to think about it again- until today, when I realized that once again my blog is gone. Over the last few weeks and months I’ve had less and less motivation to actually post here (I usually don’t get around to it until a day after I’ve posted on instagram and twitter), and after this my motivation is 100% gone. 

So goodbye, Tumblr, and all the stress you’ve caused over the past year. I still intend to reblog random posts over on my main blog ( @toffeecoco1​ ), but I won’t be active here. If I have something to promote (like if I open commissions  or a store or something like that) I’ll post it here, but beyond that, I’ll be inactive.
