Okay I admit it, the locked tomb does have a vriska. It's not Ianthe though, no matter how much the fandom tries to convince you otherwise.
It's John Gaius.

I think my main takeaway from reading TLT is that I have interpreted Ianthe's character much differently than she is usually presented in fandom. Like sure, she's not a good person but she's not .... THAT bad? Am I crazy? Did I misread this? In context, in character, most everything she does seems quite reasonable, especially in HTN when she's having an almost equivalently bad and confusing time to Harrow. She does not seem like an evil mastermind, she seems like a miserable 22 year old really suffering the transition to lyctorhood. Idk. at least based on the parameters of the world she exists in, Ianthe does not strike me as being uniquely terrible or morally bankrupt, or even really that unhinged. she seems to have very clear motivations for doing the things she does, even if those motives aren't readily apparent to the people around her, and at times she is even actively helpful and sympathetic to other characters in her own creepy-ianthe way.

griddlehark fic recs, part 3
hi, it has been 8 months since my last fic rec post and there have been a lot of new fics in that time period so: welcome to griddlehark fic recs part 3! this fandom has so many amazing authors, and i absolutely love every one of these fics. all fics here in this part are rated G or T, and tumblr usernames have been added if i could find them (sorry for the notification!). here is part 1. here is part 2 and part 4 (forthcoming).
A Handsomely Dangerous Thing T - zoicite short oneshot set during gtn. harrow's perspective on gideon's duel with naberius, featuring copious amounts of pining.
never exhale all the way G - pigflight short oneshot set during gtn. homoerotic face-painting; need i say more. harrow is so down bad for gideon in this one.
Saltwater T - Raxheim / @theriverbeyond short oneshot, kiriona speculation set between htn and ntn. kiriona meets nona in her dreams about the saltwater pool. lots of wonderful (?) kirianthe interaction as well.
A Simple Charm G - pipistrelle short oneshot set during gtn. gideon bandages harrow's hand and harrow gets flustered. the banter in this one is so good.
salt on the rim T - lifevoid short oneshot, modern au. harrow gets a bit drunk and calls gideon pretty. this fic kinda lives in my mind rent-free; the prose here is lovely.
We Have Always Lived In The Apartment T - labyrinthineRetribution / @thatneoncrisis long multi-chapter modern au, currently unfinished. (deep breath) sorry to be biased but this is probably my favorite fic on this list, if not one of my favorite tlt fics of all time. not to spoil anything, but the writing reminds me a lot of tamsyn's own writing style: there's weird identity shit going on, there's weird homoerotic shit going on, there's weird mystery shit going on. the girls are Heinous and there's bones. what more could you want from a tlt fic.
said the spider to the fly T - mutterandmumble short oneshot, modern college/uni au. harrow's having a bit of a rough time, so gideon comes over to help cook food (neither of them can cook). it's both funny and a bit bittersweet.
mune ga hachikire-sodē [my heart seems to burst] T - nosecoffee / @nose-coffee long oneshot, ntn canon-divergence where kiriona ends up rooming with pyrrha, nona, and cam & pal. this fic takes a really interesting premise and absolutely goes wild with it, and i love it.
never saw you coming T - igneousbitch oneshot, modern college/uni au. a very funny fic where griddlehark pull off a "heist" to put a fish in (professor) john's office. featuring such award winning dialogue as:
“This is my nightmare blunt rotation,” Gideon told her. “And you’re just my fucking nightmare,” Harrow said.
Intern the Sixth T - apocalypticTaco / @notedchampagne long multi-chapter pre-canon au, currently unfinished. a half-epistolary fic about the sixth going on an academic exchange trip to the ninth house, taking place about five years before canon. this entire fic is so goddamn funny and i love how much detail and attention the author pays towards necromancy, necromantic theory, and worldbuilding regarding the sixth and ninth houses.

Hello fellow Tombers! Boners! TLT enjoyers! Fandom creatives of all stripes!
Alectopause driving you feral? Harness that energy for the greater good with @fandomtrumpshate, an annual fanwork auction raising money for progressive nonprofits!
You can read all the details in the FAQ, but the tl;dr is this: if you're a fic writer, fanartist, beta reader, podficcer, fanvidder, or just have specialist expertise like Britpicking (Kiwipicking?? Please?) or can give someone's story a sensitivity read, YOU CAN OFFER YOUR WORK AND CREATIVITY FOR FELLOW FANS TO BID ON!
Last year, 12 people offered fan work for The Locked Tomb. (One of them was me! I wrote this NtN found family fic for my highest bidder in thanks for their donation.) imo this number does not reflect the ravenousness, talent, and intensity of our fandom! So I've volunteered as a Fandom Ambassador to spread the word and get more folks involved.
CREATOR SIGNUPS OPEN ON FEBRUARY 5TH!
You can see the rest of the calendar here, but the other key dates for creators are March 9th, when bidding closes, and December 31st, when fanwork is due. That's ten months to create, agonize, erase, redo, agonize more, procrastinate, daydream about Camilla Hect, and finally finish up whatever kind of work you've offered, knowing all the while that you helped to raise money for your choice of these excellent nonprofit organizations.

Here's the reason why I can never fully agree with anti Annabeth Chase and anti Luke Castellan. To me, these are the most damaged, traumatized children in the entire pjo (well, it just so happens that I share their main coping mechanisms too– only I have pills and a psychotherapist).
That is, yes, their reactions are slightly (and depending on the situation, NOT 'slightly') inadequate.
Annabeth is unhealthily obsessed with her attachments to people, her family, her sense of belonging, Percy and Luke. Her crush on Luke was normal at 12, but even after his death the narrative makes it clear (what the fandom insists on accepting as an admission that Luke had romantic feelings for her) – once again... NO – is in fact shows that ANNABETH HERSELF clearly DOESN'T consider her feelings for him as sisterly.
Damn, I think I need to add. If you hate Annabeth 'cause she acts like an unstable, traumatized child... well, deal with it – she is. No one has actually helped her process that trauma in a safe way. It's good she's still alive, I mean, look at Luke.
Well, Luke literally died as the sacrificial lion. What other stronger evidence could there be that he couldn’t cope with his trauma and it raze him? He also has a desperate desire to be part of the family, to feel loved. The obsession to fill a sense of belonging.
Both Annabeth and Luke are ideal victims for manipulation, but on different levels. Annabeth will always be a puppet of the gods and Chiron 'cause she is very loyal, but her loyalty is the status quo. It was never 'The gods failed Luke and the others so they change and the gods never tried, try or will try to change even a little', but 'May the gods curse him, he was never the same'. And (I won't for the life of me refuse these words) Luke IS loyal, but it can change if there are good reasons for this. However, he will not give up on them in the blink of an eye.
Literally, it've took years. He prayed Hermes for help for years before he ran away from home. In that one meeting, he literally begged his father to do something to show Luke his love (just tell him anything, damn you), but no. Then for another three years (and this is after Thalia's DEATH) he still retains a tiny bit of faith in Hermes, and only after the quest Luke is finally so furious and broken that he abandons the gods and this literally attracts Kronos.
Kronos needs TWO YEARS of manipulation for Luke to become the man we came to know in TLT.
Almost every book he continues to beg Annabeth to join him, although she invariably refuses.
This boy had too much faith and loyalty, but the gods managed to fuck it up.
I can’t hate them, no way. I can only feel sorry for them, love them and write fanfiction where they overcome all this crap.

has something from a tlt fic ever become headcanon to you? i ask because i find this happening to me all the damn time with this fandom but not others
OK SO, my tlt headcanons are like schrodinger's cat, they explicitly contradict each other sometimes and all of them exist at the same time in different quantum states of canon. So in that sense I've never read a fic and thought, okay, THIS is my canon from now on.
But I've read so so many fics that burst my third eye wide open and made me consider different perspectives on a character / dynamic, or helped me shape some I already had. A few favourites:
the soul that seeketh him by bittybelle — missing scene pre NtN ft. John and Kiriona. Wherein John Gaius meets his daughter, remembers the women he left behind, and deals poorly with being the male god of a universe in which the divine is essentially feminine.
AO3 user LesbianJesusLovesYou gave me Big Feelings about Gideon's childhood on the Ninth and her relationship with Harrow, Aiglamene, Ortus and Crux
believing in everything (and knowing nothing at all) — A series of childhood memories from the Ninth
when i call, will you come to me? — “My Lady,” Ortus wheezed, shifting uncomfortably. “I only thought you should know… Gideon Nav was flogged before the congregation.”
A few fics set right after NtN that really stayed with me:
never hear the sound of someone calling me home by @corpsesoldier — Kiriona Gaia returns to the House of the Ninth.
One More Son by captainpeggy — After Nona, Pyrrha Dve walks the Ninth.
two old broads split a cigarette by @forjodssake — Aiglamene/Pyrrha. “sometimes the girl you like becomes one person w her soulmate and you have to jack off about it”
Post HtN missing scenes:
Death in its season by @ancientannoyance — John holds Mercymorn's 24 minutes funeral
recognize them by their fruits by @ceruleanvulpine — John and Ianthe emerge out of the River
Other stuff that Stuck With Me
so I open the window to hear sounds of people by @sunderedstar — post NtN flashbacks. John and Alecto are the only two beings on earth, and he starts working on the Resurrection. This is harrowing and I'm absolutely obsessed with the implications in this fic of WHY John removed everyone's memory.
and they were roommates by @herenortherenearnorfar — pre Resurrection Mercy and Cristabel, from their first meeting onwards and it just really burrowed a hole in my brain and grew roots and sprouts and everything. Latin American nun Cristabel it's all I can see now, and YES they met working with climate refugees when M— was a bright eyed idealistic doctor. It also lines up great with the Asian Mercy headcanon that exist in my head (I have a whole elaborate backstory about M— aged 12 proclaiming to her Filipino Catholic family that she's an atheist now). Anyway, it's just a lovely, gorgeous fic. I think about it every day.
John 25:12 by @halfeatenmoon — pre-Resurrection, John and his friends escape the cow fortress to spend Christmas Day at the beach. With beer, salads, pavlova, and the corpses of a million fish killed by nuclear weapons testing. Ft. Southern hemisphere holidays in Mururoa Atol and 100% canon. To me.
Operation: The Most Honorable Man by @cadmean — Augustine has a proposal for the Saint of Duty (Dios Apate. That's the proposal)
lowkey cheating but I can't choose — absolutely anything AO3 user Raxheim has posted has been SOO up my alley. Every time I read one of their fics I feel like I'm enlightened by some never-before-considered detail. And mean ANYTHING, from Harrow Nova to Wake to Cytherea and the Lyctors to the Universe's #1 Sadgirl Gideon

TLT's Religion + Trauma Survey Results!
About a month ago, I shared a survey regarding the impact of TLT's religion on fans and specifically fans with self-identified religious trauma. This was part of a larger group project for a class, but a handful of people were interested in knowing the results, so here they are!
Before we start: this was a very informal project and necessarily limited. Response options were limited, it didn't inquire into demographic information, data was analyzed manually, and Christianity was the focus/frequently presumed given its global prevalence and relation to the story. Several avenues of analysis weren't pursued given time and project constraints, so please keep all this in mind
The survey was open for about a week and received 965 responses
First, respondents were asked on a scale of 1-4 "Does The Locked Tomb's use or depiction of religion impact your reading experience?" From the entire pool, 83.6% rated it as at least slightly impactful (further broken down in the graph), and 97.4% indicated this was a positive impact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In open response, respondents listed some reasons why, ranging from: "“it's just a part of the story” to “I enjoy the examination of the ways religion can shape someone's world view, or be used to manipulate and control” and "Religion is my autistic special interest and I love fictional religions!"
Respondents were then asked "Do you have, in your opinion, religious trauma?" The qualifications of religious trauma were intentionally non-specified and left to respondents discretion.
358 respondents, 37.1%, marked yes
Tumblr media
This specific group of 358 were asked if this religious trauma impacted their reading of TLT. 66.1% indicated that it did.
Tumblr media
Open response answers elaborated on this, saying: “I think reading it is cathartic for me,” “Space trauma lets me look at my real trauma without me or real people being hurt in it,” and “making religion a part of the narrative and drawing out the themes in a way that can be analyzed and picked apart made my experience with religion something I could look at in a similar way.”
The first question from the survey was then returned to, and the ratings of the 1-4 scale were looked at solely in the group of 358 respondents with self-identified religious trauma.
Of these, 90.3% marked a 2 or higher (compared to 83.6); 15% marked a 2 (compared to 22.1%), 31% marked a 3 (compared to 33%), and 44.3% marked a 4 (compared to 28.6%). Pardon the quick graph, as I made it in about 3 minutes specifically for this
Tumblr media
Respondents with religious trauma, on average, rated the series' depiction of religion as more impactful to their reading experience than respondents without.
All respondents were then asked, "Has TLT helped you challenge or reinforce your ideas of and experiences with religion?"
Tumblr media
Respondents elaborated that: "it reinforced my ideas of religion because I see religion as a means of controlling people, often abusive, and rooted in the supernatural" or "It challenged me to consider how religion can be both a positive force and a hurtful institution. I knew this to a degree already, having experienced both, but reading about it helped reinforce that nuance."
Respondents were then asked on a scale of 1-5, "Does the original text or the fandom contribute more to challenging or reinforcing ideas of and experiences with religion?" 1 is individual text only, and 5 is fandom only.
Tumblr media
The majority of respondents indicated an equal impact from the original text and the fandom, however very few people were impacted only by the fandom (1.4%) compared to the number only impacted by the text (13.8%). This wasn't investigated further.
Finally, respondents were asked what religion they'd been referring to or thinking of when they'd been answering the above questions. The vast majority indicated Christianity or Catholicism, though we did not count exactly how many of each; it was clear it was the majority, and that sufficed for our purposes. A larger, more thorough study would be needed to look at Non-Christian/Catholic respondents' experiences in comparison.
The conclusion of all of this was that, as predicted, fans of TLT with self-identified religious trauma were more impacted by the series' use and depiction of religion. This was via catharsis, sympathy, identifying with the characters, and more.
The study demonstrates a function of speculative fiction that allows readers to engage with and process difficult topics (such as religious trauma) though a protected, distanced lens where no one real is hurt. This can be taken beyond TLT and to the genre as a whole, which is often dismissed as less literary or worthy of study than its classical counterparts, an opinion the surveyors argue against.
If you've made it to the end here, thank you again for all the responses and help! I hope you've enjoyed the results, and if there are any further questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them. Upfront, yes there were 2 other components to the project (looking at queer demographics for the fandom and analyzing common themes in fanart and fic); those were my groupmates' sections, so I haven't shared them, but if you're curious I can always ask them if they'd be open to sharing :)

Please keep those reacts to tlt coming, i love them. They're wonderful. I also hope you have the time to read back on them after you finished thee book. Or all the books. Or both.
Thank you! ♥ I'm glad people seem to be enjoying them and not hating me for them, you guys are a very welcoming fandom :') ♥
I have been told I'm gonna want to revisit the comments I've made, which sounds very ominous, so I hope that posting them (instead of spamming my friend @lady-harrowhark with dms) and organizing them with a tag will help me with that 🤔 very intriguing though...

Hiii I'm gonna be sentimental and reflective oops
I had a really tough time in art school and when I finally graduated in 2019 I was burnt out beyond belief. Then covid happened and I lost both my jobs, yadda yadda, I went back to online school and did like 85% of a library tech diploma. I was good at it too, but something just felt wrong. I started to want to draw again. I wanted to try following my dream of being a comic artist again, but it hurt and it was hard and it was scary.
I was getting somewhere with it last summer when I was fortunate enough to take some time off from my gallery job. I spent that time writing. I kept like, telling myself the break would be temporary, I'd go back to work and then just make my comic on the side. But when I did go back several things happened. My cat passed away and I got injured, and I spent last fall fighting through one of the most severe depressive episodes I've ever had. I couldn't even eat really, I was drinking a lot of protein shakes. I was so unhappy.
The thing that helped me get through that was reading TLT. When I did my first handful of doodles and came back to tumblr to post them for fun I really did not expect the response I got. I'd gotten a little bit of attention on my art years ago when I used to post DC fanart on here but I'd never gotten such sweet comments. As LAME as it sounds, I've really never felt seen as an artist. Like I said, art school was uhh (forgive the pun?) pretty harrowing lmao. And yeah, its fanart, but it brought me so much joy to bring other people joy.
TLT has such a welcoming fandom. I've been in other online spaces over the years that got so toxic and mean. For the last year I've been sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it hasn't. At least not in my circle. I think the nature of the story attracts people who see the beauty in difficult things. I think this fandom is made of people (queer people, unique and complicated people) who maybe haven't felt fully seen before either.
A year ago today I started reading Gideon The Ninth and I'm so grateful for that. I may be running out of steam on the fanart front for it lately (I've been drawing it for a year straight!) but it's always going to be a piece of media that means the world to me.
I quit online school and I quit my gallery job, and I know now that was the right choice. I'll figure things out, I'm doing seasonal work and illustration gigs and maybe I'll find something else to keep the lights on next year. My webcomic Tailwind is going to have its hard launch this winter and I'm so excited. I'm ready to share more of my heart and my world.
Anyway aaaaall this to say, thanks 🌱

@wellhappybirthdaytomeiguess:
Spading is found in the always accurate Urban Dictionary as slang for sex. Probably a regional variation. :P But leave it to Gideon to make anything sound dirty.
@badcatcait:
A note on the spading thing! I think it’s slang in New Zealand specifically for flirting…but it’s also a Homestuck reference. It’s known at this point that TLT has its origins in Homestuck fandom which Muir was big in. The aliens in Homestuck have 4 types of romance based on card suits—spade/black romances are a kind of enemies-to-lovers situation where they stay enemies and hate each other but are romantically involved as well. Perfectly describes Pyrrha/Wake’s dynamic ♠️
Is there a source for it being NZ slang? Wiktionary usually lists major regional variations and slang for these sorts of things
I wouldn't put it past being a Homestuck reference, though, they did have that kind of relationship
@wellhappybirthdaytomeiguess:
Theory is that one reason John didn't 'fix the holes' was that it might make his daughter more beholden to him. We know he could likely have done so. Instead he turned her into a construct. Also, a sort of callback: GtN: “Half a dozen tendrils came after her. They would have given her an interesting array of new airholes for speed.” And then from NtN: “Those are my speed holes. They help me go fast,” said Kiriona quickly.”
If John ever was trusting of the people around him, I guess he probably moved past that since the last book, haha
and this hits hard: Gideon talking about Harrow, in HtN: “You could always leave everything else behind, but you never got rid of being so absolutely fucking goddamn sad.” And Nona talking about Gideon, NtN: “Nona had never seen anyone so sad in her whole short life.”
No one in this story is having a good time at this point. Even the villains aren't having a good time
The audiobook narration of this chapter is fantastic. Moira Quirk uses her Gideon voice, but gives it a bit more meanness of sorts, more snappishness. It's so good.
Ooh, that sounds interesting!
Do you think, generally, that Gideon seems...meaner...now? A bit of the 'came back wrong' trope?
@dreanner95:
@wellhappybirthdaytomeiguess I personally would say that she seems meaner because we are watching her from Nona's POV. Nona doesn't like her because of how she talks to her family but the way Kiriona talks is not really that different to how she talked to people back in GtN. Now we just don't have her POV anymore to factcheck how she really feels.
I think part of it is that it's through Nona's POV and we aren't getting Gideon's perspective on things, but also I think she definitely is being meaner. Like compare how Palamedes was treating her and reacting to her in the first book versus this:

Your TLT propaganda worked perfectly, especially the "what's it even about" post that mentioned the Houses being planets ((I've always imagined it as more of a high fantasy setting and the whiplash I got from the sheer genre change broke down the last bit of hesitation I had)).
I've finally read GtN and yeah. I get it now. This is absolutely one of those novels that'll permanently rewire your entire brain if read at the right moment in your life. I've burned through the entire thing in a single six-hour session and I immediately thereafter ordered the other two novels.
Also, it is always really fun to finally watch/read a piece of media you've absorbed like. Passive Fandom Radiation from for ages because everysooften someone will mention something in passing and it just makes So Much you've heard about click into place all at once. It's like you've been listening in to experts in an art gallery through a thin wall, having no idea what they're talking about, and now you've broken in after hours, the room is pitch black and you have nothing but the smallest of lights, and each step takes you closer to being able to make out the vague shape of the sculpture on the dias at the far end of the room.
im so happy you liked it!!! the second gtn hit for me it was like a downhill slope and baby im currently getting. intense roadburn. it plagues me night and day. when you finish the other 2 books id love to know what you think i get so much joy recommending this series to other people and learning its a hit
i also love the way you described getting into media youve heard about passively its so real to me!! i like going into things blind but the little reviews people say help guide me somewhat since i tend to branch off on 55 impressions of what i watch/read before settling into a finalized conclusion. i like seeing what other people think and how our perspectives clash depending on how we read and interpret things and the commonality between them

I shouldn’t be bugged at all but somehow I’m still weirded out by “you’d want to read about a lobotomy if you had context”
I can’t say I know that’s not true, but I can say that i personally can’t imagine a situation where that’s anything but triggering for me. If it’s nonconsensual it’s someone having their mind violated, which is super triggering and which I’m really picky about reading (had the same issue with tf mtmte)
And if it’s consensual (which iirc is the case) it means a character feels so bad that they’re willing to experience irreversible brain damage out of shame, which is also profoundly triggering.
Honestly I suspect that even if I wanted to know, I’d find a fan friend and ask them to sum it up.
But even THEN, it seems like skipping the scene might not help much, as the thing making me queasy is the thought of the lasting damage and how you can’t possibly predict what parts of your mind that erases, so my guess would be that there’s more than just one upsetting scene.
I mean, maybe I’ll read the rest someday and laugh uproariously at these posts, I HAVE intentionally pushed through triggering material sometimes and liked it in the end. But it seems to me at the moment that anything I might want to get from tlt I can probably osmosis from the fandom (at the risk of occasionally coming across excerpts on my dash that perturb me, as happened yesterday.)

this poll only has 300 votes right now and light yagami is beating harrow in the competition for who has the flattest ass. please come help me solve this grievous error and give our girl the title she deserves
There is no way tennis-playing, home cooking eating, known potato chip enjoyer Light Yagami has a flatter ass than our queen of darkness. Our frail, half-starved rat of a girl.
