“Aww, baby,” your voice mocks him, looking down from your position sitting firmly straddling his lap, “You look so cute like this.” He groans at your quip, his brows furrowing and lips parted and panting. Lifting yourself up over him, you slowly and steadily roll your hips over his cock, sucking his weeping tip into your heat.
He drew his bottom lip between his teeth, his cheeks dusting with a shade of pink as he was held captive between your legs. Your grinding, writhing and lewd moaning had all other thoughts flee from his mind. All he wanted was to watch you bounce on his cock, spreading your slick down his shaft until he watched you shake in pure ecstasy.
Rocking your body harder atop him, he desperately clawed at the flesh of your hips and bucks his cock into you with reckless abandon. All he can hear is your soft giggles down at him, taunting him with your joy. You coo at him, encouraging him by meeting his thrusts as he repeatedly, harshly, buries himself within you.
“Don’t… h-hah… Don’t call me cute,” he growled through guttural and feral moans, desperately chasing his high with you continuing to ride his cock. The blunt tip slams deep within you, immediate contact prompting you to see stars in your vision and cry out at his vicious momentum. Choosing to taunt him further, you pry your chest away from his and splay your fingers over his chest.
“Why? You... mnngh… gonna show me who’s boss?” you smirk down at him, viciously riding him and prompting him to cry out in shock at your movements, “Gonna reprimand me formally, cutey? Gonna tell me to stop?”
“Don't stop. Don't stop!” He sobbed in desperation, the feeling of your grinding causing tears to form from the corners of his eyes. He sheathed himself deep within your abdomen, overcome by his need to use your body to chase his own high.
“Feels too good, hmm?” you pout down at him before curling your lips up into a cruel smirk, “Gonna cum already? I bet you look real cute when you cum.” He growled up at you, reaching one hand up to cup your cheek and draw you down into a bruising and bullying kiss. You squeak in surprise in his mouth as he flips you onto your back in a hasty drop against the mattress below.
He grabs your left ankle, throwing it over his shoulder and rails his throbbing cock within you deeper. You cry out at the change, his lips not leaving yours as his pace quickens. The hurried snap of his hips slapping yours had a sickening, slick sound reverberating in the room. His lips pant against your own as he feels closer to his release.
“S-Stop calling me c-cute,” he groaned, his eyes rolling back as he felt your walls contract around his throbbing cock, “I’m your s-superior officer, brat.” He bullied your body with his shaft, your cries music to his ears as he felt your body spasm and sucked him in further.
“D-Doesn't make you any less cute, sir,” you whined up at him, looking through your eyelashes at him. You praised him, clawing at his hips and his back as he quickened his pace further, “That’s it, cutey, show me who’s boss.” He growled at your taunt, hand flying up to cradle the back of your head and tugging firmly on your hair.
Just as he was about to bark his command to stop mocking him, his eyes went black with lust as he watched your brows rise to the peak of your forehead. Your eyes rolled back as your face contorted in ecstasy, your body sucking him deep within you with beckoning contractions.
“I’m c-cumming,” you mewl, your orgasm crashing over you in encumbering waves that had you drowning in pleasure, “I-I’m cumming so hard.” Your cries immediately prompt him to spill his own high deep within you, your body milking his cock with your rhythmic contractions. You whined his name, your praises falling freely from your lips as you began to go limp beneath him.
“Fuck,” he barked, his movements becoming sloppy and languid as he buried himself to the hilt within you, “Fucking take it. Take it.” His expulsion of sticky cum splashed in ropes deep in your overstimulated and abused cunt. His breath caught in his chest as he groaned with every pulse of release within your body, chanting your name like a prayer.
He memorized your face, the soft dewy flush on your cheeks and parted lips in the afterglow of your high. Your smile was hypnotic, your eyes holding nothing but love and adoration for him as you looked up into his face. As he smiled and leaned down to claim your lips beneath his, the image dissipated in a waft of scentless smoke. His shock was evident on his face, his desperation to feel your body had him clawing at the position you were laying prior with his heart ringing frantically within his ears.
“No, no, no,” he stuttered into the darkness, looking around the empty space for where you were moments prior, his heart screaming for you as he snapped his head around to search for you, “Where are you? Where are you?”
“Where are you?” His eyes snapped open as his body sprung up from its recline. His breath was heavy and labored, his eyes wide and frantic before he realized what had happened. With a soft gasp followed by a choked, embarrassed groan, he peers down to his stomach and witnesses a damp patch of sticky cum seep into his pants.
His cock twitched, his knob bobbing against the material of his uniform pajamas as it began to deflate beneath the fabric. Cringing with a soft tint of pink on his cheeks, he opened the waistband of his pants and growled at himself for his lack of discipline. The pearlescent release coating his cock, pooling down his shaft and leaking down his balls within his underwear, had him immediately angry at himself as he whispers a soft curse.
“Fuck...”

Koby
He cringes at his own cursing, shaking his head as he looks down at his abdomen before snapping the elastic back against his stomach. Drawing his fingers up to his face, he pinches his brow and huffs out a soft groan while massaging his face. He looks over to the remainder of the cots in the shared-living space at the marine base, quietly surveying the sleeping bodies for any signs of wake.
Eyes focussing on your hammock, he notices your chest rise and fall in steady momentum. Your breathing was deep, your sleep was peaceful, and Koby was wracked with guilt at thinking about an ensign serving beneath his command as a muse for pleasure in his dreams. Your sultry cries haunted him, his mind running away with him every time he shut his eyes to blink.
He laid back down, curling over in his cot and crossed his arms over his chest. His brows knit in a deep frown as he chastised himself for his intrusive thoughts. Tossing and turning, he was unable to fall back asleep due to the sensation of his warm release cooling in a sticky pool against his skin beneath his briefs.
“Awe, baby,” your voice mocked in his mind, his restless slumber worsening, “So pretty, captain. Show me who's boss, Koby,” he shook his head of your voice, drawing his forearms over his ears and scrunching his eyes tightly shut.
The image of your blissful face looking up at him with adoration and love before dissipating burnt his mind. His heart hammered in his chest as he felt the loss of your illusionary form in his arms.
He snuck a peek at you over his shoulder, noticing you remained blissfully ignorant of his lustful thoughts as you slept soundly beside your fellow marines. His craving for you caused him to pout, his eyes round and shameful. Deciding to get up and clean himself up, he did so before relieving the night watch shift from duties to take over for himself above deck.
The following morning, you strolled onto the deck and assumed you were to take over the duties from the cadet attending overnight. Your shock at being met by your pink-haired captain was evident in your eyes, following him with curiosity but otherwise choosing to remain professional in your stature.
“Captain,” you stated quietly, clicking your heels together as he turned to face you, “I am here to relieve you, sir.” You could’ve sworn a subtle pink blush flashed on his cheeks, but the warmth of the sun shining on the deck may have been the cause for such a hue.
“I-I-...” Koby stuttered over his words, his eyes wide and teeth almost chattering. You slipped your stance into ease as you awaited his orders. “...Good morning, Ensign.” Your brows furrowed, cocking your head to the side as you eyed him wearily.
“Good morning, sir,” you responded in a low and slow tone, “I know it is not my place, but is everything okay with you? You seem… out of sorts?” A soft, sheepish sigh fell from his lips as he rubbed the back of his head anxiously.
“I had something keeping me awake last night, couldn’t rest,” he uttered through a straight, joyless smile. His eyes opened, gazing deep into your own as his smile turned more genuine. “Forgive me for asking, just in case it’s something you’re not comfortable with,” he began to stutter and stumble over his words, “We’ve got some shore leave coming up, and I was wondering if you might be interested in sharing a meal together.”
Your eyes widened, quickly eyeing your captain over. His gaze never left you, but his smile began to nervously twitch as he waited for your response. Your smile grew up to light up on your cheeks in immediate joy.
“I would love to, captain,” you responded kindly, “With Helmeppo and the other officers, or just us?”
“Just us, ensign,” he clarified with a soft wave of his hands and a warm smile, “Maybe we could drop the titles and you could call me ‘Koby’, if you’re comfortable with that?” Your smile widens and your heart begins beating hard within your chest.
“I would like that very much, Koby,” you admitted. He reached his hand out towards you, taking your own within his palm and fingers. His hands felt warm, a soft tingle in his grip and apprehensive to show you favoritism and affection so openly. Holding his eyes over the soft touch he gave to you, the pink flush drew itself up to his cheeks once more.
“It’s a date then,” he confirmed softly, his smile growing as he drew his eyes up to meet with yours. He gave your hand a gentle squeeze before releasing it with a soft cough. “All the best with your shift,” he gulped, testing your name over his tongue as he saluted you as he walked away from you.
“Sweet dreams, Koby,” you responded, assuming he was on his way to attempt to sleep once more.
You didn’t notice the stumble in his step and the deep crimson drawing up his neck and littering his face with it. He was immediately drawn back to his illusionary night muse, your well-wishes for his slumber having his mind repeat sections of his dream in a taunting echo.
Gulping back his shame and shaking his head to rid him of his thoughts, he continued on his shift with a pep in his step at getting to know you further over a meal together.

Helmeppo
He growled at himself, balling his hands into fists and thumping them down at his sides. The disgust he had in his own mind for distorting the image of you in his dreams had him livid, his heart twisting with guilt and anguish.
“I am a swordsman!” he harshly whispered to himself, his scowl deepening as his fury rose, “I am disciplined, and I shouldn’t allow pleasures and my own desires to dissuade my mission to-.” His monologue was cut off with a small rap at his door, his eyes immediately looking up to seek out its source.
Without thinking much of the stain lingering within his undergarments and pooling down his legs, he sprang up and hastily turned the knob and flung his door inwards. His anger was written in a low grimace, his blue eyes enraged and wide in fury.
“What do you-..!?” his barked question was halted as soon as his unshrouded eyes met with your own, looking up at him with concern and worry, “...-oh.” His lips immediately slit against his face in a thin line, his anger dissipating and filled with concern at your presence by his door.
“What are you doing here, ensign?” Helmeppo asked you, his voice quiet and cautious, “You should be asleep down the hall in your room. Why are you-?”
“-I heard you, sir,” you immediately relayed to him, “Forgive me for speaking out of turn, but I thought it was better I checked in on you than the others.” His face immediately had a large blush spread up his face, gulping back a large mouthful of the dried lump forming in his throat.
“Y-You heard…” Helmeppo stuttered, his lip almost betraying him in a soft quiver. You searched his eyes, leaning your body closer to him with an outstretched hand intended for comfort. His confusion knit his brows in a deep frown, his lips parting as he was shocked by the tenderness you were presenting out to him.
Did you hear him whimper your name as he came untouched? Did you hear the way he cried for you, imagining your body beneath his as he chased his own ecstasy deep within your slick heat? Did you hear the way he mourned your loss as he awoke without you?
“I heard you wake from your nightmare, sir,” you halted his swirling thoughts, “I assumed the worst, expected you were experiencing the trauma of being kidnapped by your father and threatened with death by his axe-hand,” you relayed to him openly and honestly, “I thought you might need a friend.”
His expression immediately softened, unused to such kindness being shown to him other than under the traineeship of Garp and Bogard, or confiding in his friend turned Captain, Koby. As he gazed at you, his mind momentarily swelled with the illusion of your face depicting warmth in bliss - immediately shaking away those thoughts to focus on the real you. A soft smile twitched on his lips as he leaned against the wall beside the door.
“And why would you grant me friendship, ensign?” he asked, stunned by your words, “What have I done to deserve this offer of an ear to whisper my trauma into?” He attempted to keep a straight face as he felt the slick cum begin to tickle from the corner of his uniform briefs and down the inside of his thighs, praying that you wouldn’t look at his gray uniform sweatpants and notice the trail.
“Captain Koby is away from base without you,” you noted, flickering your eyes between his, “And the Vice-Admiral and his second in command have not been to this base in the past few months. Forgive me for assuming you would enjoy some company,” you gave him a polite nod, looking to the floor and holding your eyes there while you awaited his response.
Clicking his tongue at you, he stepped forward and raised his hand to your chin, lifting it to meet his eyes once more. He was hoping he was oozing enough confidence in his gaze to halt you from looking at the ooze beginning to trail down to his knee.
“I appreciate your offer, ensign. Truly,” he nodded, ensuring he held your gaze as he began to internally quiver in fear, “I have been a little…” he winced at his next few words, scolding himself before uttering quietly, “...pent up lately. I think I need to train a little harder, or go for a run.”
“I’d be happy to offer you company on your run, sir,” you admit to him with a soft smile, “I have also felt a little pent up lately. I feel like it would be more appropriate to run than to find reprieve at the bottom of a rum bottle,” you shake your head as you wince your own confession to him, “Or in the arms of an overnight lover, if I’m being truly honest with you.”
His eyes widen at your confession, his jaw falling slack at your admittance. He took another gulp at the dryness gathering in his throat as he flickered his eyes to the floor. He argued with himself as he avoided your gaze, managing to find the words and the courage to ask you a question that was gnawing at him the moment he felt anxious at the thought of losing you when he woke.
“If you’re looking for an overnight lover, I’d-...” his suggestion caught in his mouth, prompting a sharp cough to form behind his lips, “...I’d offer to aid you with that, if you’re interested. Unless you’d prefer a run, I could use a run after the night I had. I’m sorry if my suggestion is overstepping, I would never aim to make you uncomfortable at the base if you’re not wanting this kind of attention from me-.”
His rambling was halted by your warm lips pressing against his, his shock prompting a whimpered gasp to cry into your lips. He immediately warmed to the kiss, ushering you into his room and slamming the door shut behind you. Your smile was pressing against his lips, your squeak of joy prompting him to smile as he lifted you up to circle your hips over his waist had him immediately smitten.
Helmeppo was then plagued with another issue that chipped at the back of his mind. How was he going to clean up the memory of his dreams leaking down his pant leg before creating new ones within your arms? As you clasped your arms firmly around his neck and deepened the kiss with your tongue, he simply no longer cared.

Smoker
His fury down turned his lips in a rough grimace, his teeth clenching hard in a rough grind. He shook his head, immediately stepping out of his bed towards his bathroom. He filled his sink with fresh, cool water, splashing it over his face and allowing the icy droplets to pry him from his prior vision.
“So cute, Captain,” your voice mewled at him in a playful jest within his mind's eye, “So, so pretty when you blush for me. How much cuter do you get when you cum, hm?” He growled at the image, splashing water over his neck and letting it trickle down his shirt behind him.
“Cute?” He barked at his reflection, staring his steely orbs at his scarred face, “Cute?” His disgust at the distorted image of you giggling down at him over his lap had him ignited in fury.
“‘M not cute,” he huffs at himself, nose wrinkling up at the thought. He looked down to his waist, his gray sweatpants beginning to dampen with his release seeping into them.
“Gonna reprimand me, Captain?” your spectral taunt called to him, “Gonna show me who's boss, Smoker?” His cock twitched in interest, his teeth gritting tighter at the prospect of putting you in your place.
The way your uniform clung to your body had his imagination run wild with him. You were a desk-bound marine, your ability to catalogue with expert precision and haste had your services highly sought after. He was the lucky captain that landed you in his office, seeing your smile each morning, smelling your sweet perfume and hearing your laugh throughout the day, only to see your kind wave at the end of your shift as you left.
You had never given his mind any cause to lust for you, but it lusted regardless. He was consumed by the way your body would feel wrapped around his cock, hearing the smile in your laugh, and feeling the way your walls would beckon him within them with your slick arousal shepherding the way.
At that thought, he turned on the shower and switched it to the coldest temperature it could go. Peeling off his clothes with a grunt of disgust at himself, he stepped into the shower and allowed the coolness to drift down his body. In a desperate attempt to cool his raging thoughts, he gripped his cock in a cruel strangle.
Haunted by your moans and cries for him, his shaft swelled and knob shined with the hurried rush of blood. He girdled his shaft within his fist, attempting to choke back the thought of you to no avail.
“C’mon, baby,” his mind conjured your taunt within the cool steam rising from the shower, “I need you, sir. Fuck me. I bet you could make me behave if you just give in.” He began to pump his cock, huffing out pants with every rough piston.
“Shut up, brat,” he whispered in a gruff wince, “I'll f-fucking show you.” He beat his shaft harder, feeling the veins beneath swell and protrude within his palm. His translucent cum began to bead at the slit in his knob as his jaw fell slack.
“C-Captain Smoker, please can I cum on your cock?” Your spectral image conjured for him, his cock involuntary twitching at the thought. His nob swelled and he sucked his bottom lip between his teeth to halt his moans.
Seeing the dewy, blissed-out sheen on your face, as your spectral form begged for him to satisfy you by answering, had him rolling his hips into his palm and picking up his pace. He squeezed at his tip, circling it down against his shaft as he pictured you asking so beautifully for permission to cum.
“You want to cum on your captain's cock?” He huffed to his conjured mirage, “You wanna feel good, do ya, brat?” He fisted his palm harder, picturing your walls contracting with the proximity of your own ecstacy.
“Oh, f-fuck,” he cried out your name, beginning to spill over into his palm, the water pummeling his shoulders from above him, “Oh fuck, oh fuck. Cum for me. Cum for me, baby.” He pictured your face contorting in pleasure, your lips falling into a soft, smiling ‘O’ as he finally gave you permission to cum.
Ribbons of his hot spend splattered against the shower wall, his guilt seeping in as his bliss tapered out. He groaned for you, picturing your face as you came down from your high and chastising himself for degrading you in his imagination.
“Fuck,” he whispered his curse, angling the showerhead over the wall to wash it clean of his shame before washing himself with his all in one shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel.
As he concluded his shower and dried himself off with a towel, he took a mental note to do a task for your benefit to satisfy his guilt. Maybe some flowers to highlight your desk, or providing the office with a lunch on his Berry might be appreciated.
Shaking his head at himself, he wrapped his towel around his waist as he drew out twin cigars and placed them between his teeth. Igniting the end, he smiled as he came to terms with his new infatuation. His new quest was to attempt to woo you, get to know you better, and treat you with the adoration he so desperately craved to give you.
Exhaling with a smile, he muttered to himself with a soft, crackled growl, "I have a lot of work to do."

Romcom kind of idea: Helmeppo and Garp takes Koby drinking to relax since next day they have to start training some new recruits. At the bar Koby see a pretty lady and get pushed by the other two older marines for him to go talk to her. After talking, drinking and maybe even a little make out session with the lady, Koby goes home all relaxed and happy. Next day, still with a little hangover, Koby goes to talk with the new recruits just to spot who in the crowd? Cute lady!!!! And she looks just as surprised as him. What now?

Koby should have known this was going to be a mistake.
Garp, the famous Hero of the Navy, had pulled only a handful of strings in pulling his two apprentices away from Marineford to an island only half an hour’s travel away, where a ‘perfect bar was calling them’. Koby had been trying to ignore their insistence that he join them. It wasn’t that he wouldn’t have enjoyed the idea of a couple of drinks possibly in the house, or Garp’s own tab, it was that the next day they would find themselves training their first new wave of Recruits. Koby and Helmeppo had struggled to get as far as they had come, fighting through tribulations and their own self-inflicted doubts to get to the point they were. Not to mention the thin ice they sometimes found themselves on due to their light association with Luffy D. Monkey. Not that they would complain. Garp’s name would usually be enough to back off most who threw doubts their way, or their own accomplishments they’ve managed in most locations. This had put them in good enough graces to finally take on a small group of new recruits to be trained. It wouldn’t be permanent, like Garp with them, but more so a temporary thing to last only a few months before they would be split apart and shipped off to different areas. Some would remain in Marineford, but not many.
“Come on.” Helmeppo spoke, tilting his head to the side just as the boat rocked to the right a little too hard. It wasn’t a Navy ship like they were used to, more so a simple Ferry built to withstand the waves of the Grand Line. It wasn’t something built to go for several days or harbor hundreds, thus it rocked in uneven motions, tossing the people who weren’t prepared for it back and forth. Compared to others, they were holding on just fine, with Koby’s hands gripping the side of the boat. He still couldn’t believe they had managed to convince him to come along. Maybe he was more stressed than he had realized over the situation.
“I’m here, aren’t I?” It wasn’t bitter, but he was pouting in a strangely young way, something to remind Helmeppo just how young the two of them were compared to others out here. He huffed.
“Don’t look so guilty and miserable about it. You’re acting like we kidnapped you at gunpoint or something.”
“You both threatened to, and I quote, carry me out here anyways. I don’t think I had much of a choice.” His smile was weary, small on his face. His goggles fell suddenly from a sharp rock and he steadied them back to the top of his head.
“Well, you needed to get out.” Helmeppo said. He nodded, agreeing with himself and propped up against the railing. Koby knew when he was fighting a losing argument, so he resigned himself to simply enjoy the quiet he would have before arriving.
The bar was definitely crowded with young, new faces that Koby had never seen before. Some older Marines, people he had seen around Marineford, were also there and nursing harder drinks in their reclusive corners. Garp and Helmeppo wouldn’t leave Koby alone, much to his own simmering annoyance. It wasn’t that he wasn’t unthankful nor wished for a lonely presence, but he did wish for some quieter drinking company. His own drink was fruity and light, something he could enjoy at least while he watched everyone around him continue to grow louder and louder.
Then, he spotted you.
It was a creeping feeling. A sudden realization that he had been staring at you as you laughed at something another person said, your own drink also being softly nursed with small sips. He didn’t even notice his staring or how he was acknowledging how you snorted into your hand when you laughed a little too hard until Helmeppo had noticed he was zoned out and no longer listening. Bending over his shoulder he looked over and grinned something broad and dangerous.
“Oh, spot you someone?” Koby jerked into a stiff seated position and quickly looked away from you, red burning across his cheeks. Garp’s attention was immediately dragged over when he tried to stutter an excuse, one that had Helmeppo smirking.
“What’s wrong? Got tongue-tied or something from a beautiful lady?” Garp slapped a hard hand onto Koby’s shoulder and his weaker drink was spilled, the shattering of the glass covered by the loud atmosphere of the crowd around. “I thought you learned how to talk to someone like that from me already. Or did you?” Garp shook his head and delivered another harsh slap, knocking him from the seat.
“Go talk to her.” Helmeppo said. “She doesn’t look like she’s here with anyone.”
Koby choked on a response to them and found himself urged away, shooed off with waves and hollering that followed his ever growing reddening ears. You were still where you were though, as they had said, you were alone. Whoever you had been talking to had moved on, perhaps to another face, and you were still nursing your own drink, twisting the straw that stuck out of it. You were dressed formally. No, not formally, but better than he was in his casual clothing that had been thrown to the back of his closet, almost forgotten about until this time. He felt underdressed compared to you and it made him hesitate even further. But the shame of what Garp and Helmeppo would do if he returned without at least attempting to speak to you far out-weighed any nerves of his attire, so he swallowed nerves down deep and approached you with the first thing he could say.
“I like the color of your shoes.”
He was doomed.
You blinked up at him in confusion, poised for a sip you would abandon in return for eyeing the man before you. Koby remained unmoving, hands sweating and flexing in his pockets as he tried to maintain some calm atmosphere about him.
Then you laughed.
“Well, I’m glad I suppose. I like them too.” You looked him over once, twice, then shifted on the seating you had been perched on. A bench, definitely meant for outside, had been pulled in. “Did you come over here to speak only about my shoes or….”
He definitely did not.
“I-I came over to talk to a pretty lady like you.” Garp would have been proud of his word choice, but the ever flustered Koby was slowly curling in on himself, turning away to hide his embarrassment. You found it charming. Cute, in a way, and masked your giggle around the rim of your cup.
“Well, aren’t you a charmer?” You asked. The teasing tone did urge him to look at you and you were so nice when you spoke. Up close like this he got to smell the perfume you had on, something sweet to lure him in a bit closer, which helped to ease up his nerves. “You look a little uncomfortable though. You sure that’s why you’re over here?”
Busted.
“I-It isn’t that I don’t want to talk to you. My friends just, ah, they saw me looking at you and just, well.” He choked and you fought your grin until he found his words. “They…wanted me to try talking to you.”
“I’m glad.” He blinked, looked you over once, then blinked again. “No, really. I promise, my friends dragged me out here too for some celebration I’m not even a part of. Or, well, I don’t want to be a part of.” You spared a glance to a gathered group of young, fresh faces to the far side and he followed it. They were drinking heavily, a few encouraging the others as fresh shots of something strong and smelly passed around. You lightly cringed around your own fruity drink, something Koby would have liked.
“You were dragged out too?” He relaxed a bit more then, finding you in a similar situation. “Well…guess we have no choice but to keep each other company then, right?”
Keeping each other company turned into a few drinks. A few drinks turned into a couple shots, bought by the beaming Garp who raised his own glass. And a few laughs and stories shared between the two of you turned into shoulders brushing. Then it turned into him helping you to a corner where there was less light to try and fix your shoe, which had broken when you stood to get a drink.
Then it turned into a drunken spur of the moment kiss that evolved into more than one.
Maybe he should have paid attention to the facts you spoke, but he hadn’t drank in a long time and it was definitely potent when it settled. These kisses you shared were sweet and warm. A breath of fresh air to the cold reprise of Marinfore, and he was sighing into them whenever you both broke apart. He was respectful of any boundaries you had and you were respectful that he was still intoxicated, so your touches were restrained. Held back to simply brushes of fingers on fingers, or fingertips touching at the shoulders or bottom of the kneecap. The kisses continued on, the sounds of the background falling apart, it all became too much and when you finally pulled back, head lightly spinning, a hand clasped onto Koby’s shoulder.
 Garp.
“It’s getting late.” He stated, a gruff voice rough from his drinks and a couple of smoke breaks he had taken with others in the Marines. Koby blinked up at him in confusion before you seemed to put the pieces together. Garp was charming with his smile, but he was also aware of how late it had actually gotten. Koby seemed to want to disagree, but your hand on his wrist distracted him briefly as you agreed.
“You should head back. I have a few things to take care of tomorrow too.” You looked down at your person and frowned. “I…don’t have a way to communicate, but I could meet you back here tomorrow night? If that’s okay?”
That was more than okay in his eyes.
Then, nothing. He was on the rocking boat, listening to Helmeppo tease him about the “loving eyes” he had been shooting you, all blitzed out of his mind from his drinks, but he didn’t care. Garp didn’t speak much on anything, enjoying the cooler evening air and soft sounds of the Ocean. Then he was in bed, curled into his pillow and still remembering your perfume, the taste of your sweet drink on your lips, and how soft your hand was on his.
He slept with a smile on his face.
That smile would be abruptly taken the next morning, when he was dressed in uniform and standing at the end of a long lineup of people, all dressed in similar uniforms. They all looked similar. Young, fresh, and new to the Marines. Similar to how he had been long ago when he had first joined, except there was an issue. Standing in exactly row five, three to the left stood a familiar, equally shocked face.
You. There stood you, with your eyes wide and mouth partially open at the realization of what had happened the previous night. Helmeppo, thankfully, hadn’t recognized you or he would have never heard the end of it. Garp wasn’t there, busy with something else that these two were to handle.
‘Well.’ He thought, looking away with his ears a vibrant pink once again. ‘At least I won’t have to meet you there tonight.’

Garp, Koby, And Helmeppo With A Pirate S/O

Garp
He hates that he’s fallen for someone of your stature. He hates that you're considered a criminal in the eyes of the government. He hates that you willingly throw yourself out into the light of ridicule. He hates that you’re constantly in danger, but most importantly, he hates that the two of you can’t legally be seen being friendly with each other.
There are moments when he considers offering you a spot alongside him in the navy, but he knows what you'd say and it shatters him.
So many people in his life have already chosen the same path as you and he can't help but watch them all ruin themselves because of it.
He’d probably make it so that he and his unit followed your ship around, mostly just to tease you, but also because he's severely worried you'll end up in danger.
A part of him lives for the power dynamic between you both. He likes being able to arrest you whenever he wants, and he LOVES how you could kill him whenever you caught him alone (or at least try to).
Whenever he manages to get you both alone, he'll bring your hands up to his lips and kiss them, begging you to, at the very least, consider the idea of being a marine — to consider the idea of putting your talents into something a tad bigger than yourself.
Forbidden lovers, but in the saddest kind of way. Where Garp lays awake at night thinking of whether or not you'll survive the night without him. But he'll have to learn to let go of his naturally protective nature.
Koby
He feels so conflicted. He wants to be with you so badly, but he’s scared to be found out. It weighs on him to the point where he’ll constantly be promising you that he doesn’t feel ashamed of you or any other negative connotation you could connect with it, he just really wants this job.
He'll sneak around and try to hide your files so that you slowly become more and more forgotten about by the Marines. He wants to get you out of the public eye as much as he could possibly manage.
Every time he sees your wanted poster he tears it down (although he does keep one folded under his cot).
When he does finally get to see you, he'll hold your face in his hands and just smile lovingly at you, telling you everything that's happened since your last departure.
He always comes bearing small gifts — what kind of boyfriend would he be if he didn't? It's always something that resembles him in some way — his old dog tags, a crumpled note, and sometimes even your missing files.
And when the two of you have to leave, he'll fall into a short depression, wishing that one day, the two of you could be together openly without the fear of persecution.
He honestly couldn't care less about whether or not you're a pirate, he loves you for you, the labels don't mean anything to him.
Helmeppo
He loves the thrill of it all. He adores the way you both have to sneak around just to meet up with one another. It floods him with the best kind of adrenaline.
He won't tell a soul about you until he gets drunk. Which makes him the worst one on this list. Once he's a bit intoxicated, he'll blabber on about you for the whole night.
You'll probably end up arrested due to how much he mentions you.
Old habits die hard, however, and he'll find himself scrounging up cash to pay off whoever it is being sent after you.
He's following you around the second he finds out you're both on the same island. He makes it sooo obvious and you'll have to tug him into an alleyway so no one arouses anymore suspicion than they already have.
Helmeppo doesn't care if the two of you get caught — he can deal with all that later — he only cares for you and the fleeting moments spent together, even if it means your secret relationship is plastered in the news.

The smell of different chocolates wafted through the air, with a hint of artificial strawberry.
“Mmm, these look great!”
Nami smacked Luffy’s hands away from the handmade chocolates you made with your friends (or rather, just Usopp, Nami, Vivi, Robin, and Sanji. Zoro and Luffy were just there to hang out).
“Those ones are not for you, dumbass!” “Aww, man…”
Next to Luffy was a now almost empty chocolate box, intended for him as you all knew he would want one. The reason you four were making chocolates was the fact that tomorrow was Valentine’s Day.
Besides you, Nami had invited her girlfriend and your shared close friend group to make some chocolates for Valentine’s Day after you had drunkenly admitted your crush on a certain pink haired boy in front of the group you were currently with.
Five minutes later, after your admission, Vivi had been the one to suggest confessing your feelings on Valentine’s Day.
“I think it would be so cute!”
Initially, you had believed that this whole thing was extremely cheesy. However, some of your friends believed that there was no better time than Valentine’s Day.
The worldwide day of celebrating love, or so Sanji believed.
Quietly, Usopp butts in, “Remember, that’s up to (Y/N) to confess…”
“I KNOW THAT!”
“And besides, if (Y/N) gets rejected, I don’t think Koby would be the type to distance himself and stop being friends with them.” A hum from Luffy indicated he agreed with Zoro’s statement.
A statement that earned both boys a hard smack on the head by Nami, “You two! Knock it off!”
“No, no, they’re right.” Much to the surprise of your friends, you shrugged, “We gotta be realistic about this. I don’t know what’s gonna happen if I do end up confessing.”
The attention was focused on you now, feeling like a lone stage light shining on you as your friends sat in silence, everyone unsure of what to say.
Luckily it didn’t last for too long.
“Well I think you should go for it. If you want.” Sending a small smile your way, Robin shrugged, “Judging by our interactions, he seems like a lovely person who would treat you nicely.”
You didn’t want to make a hasty decision of confessing or not. “Just… give me a few days to think about it.”
Vivi patted your back gently, “Of course!”
And that was that, another topic amongst your group started.
A few days later, you were able to make up your mind and texted Nami your decision, which led to you proudly raising a box of chocolates. You had used different molds to make unique shapes for the chocolates, and coated some strawberries in white chocolate as you recalled it was his favourite type of chocolate. Well, at least you hope you heard him right.
Today’s chocolate making event was a success, and you could only hope your confession the next day would also be a success.
Tumblr media
The next day, you found yourself, Nami, Usopp and Robin hiding behind the wall of a shop.
A few minutes ago, you had received a text from Koby mentioning that he and Helmeppo got off from work and were going to the park you two had agreed at meet at a few days ago.
However, you were getting a bit nervous, refusing to stand next to the park and risk looking like a lonely person surrounded by all the couples that were out today.
“Oh, just do it (Y/N)!” Intending to push you to where Koby could see you, Nami’s feet shuffle, inadvertently pushing both you and Usopp.
Usopp ran back to your friends, leaving you all by yourself to choke on your spit before Koby and Helmeppo could turn around.
Well, that is if they were there.
“Wh- huh?” Blinking, you turned your head to the left, then to the right. Didn’t Robin just say that the duo were already there?
Since they weren’t here… you could just… run away quickly without getting noticed, right?
Maybe even buy tickets to another country and just chuck your phone in some random trash bin. Start a new life-
‘No, no!’ Shaking your head, you looked down at the ground, ‘Focus! I’m here anyways, no point in being embarrassed now! I’ll wait for him to show up.’
Unbeknownst to you, Robin was right. They were behind you, but the fact you were confessing in the first place was getting too overwhelming that you didn’t think to check behind you.
Helmeppo was the first one to spot you, nudging the pink haired boy next to him as he spoke, “(Y/N)’s here.”
Acknowledging his best friend’s words, Koby turned his body in the same direction.
Your friends tried to signal to look behind you, making exaggerated movements in hope you’d turn around. Unfortunately for them, you just furrowed your eyebrows in confusion, looking side to side and shrugging at your friends when you couldn’t see Koby.
Unaware that both men were behind you, your soul almost jumped out of your body as you finally turned around.
“Well you sure are delighted to see us,” Helmeppo commented with a snort.
“Sorry if we scared you!” Koby let out a chuckle, “It was cute, though.”
…Did he just say you were cute?? CUTE??? This probably means you’ve got a chance!
“That’s, that’s fine,” In a poor attempt to look nonchalant, you looked away to the right in hopes that your heart would stop racing. Confessing was a scary thing to do considering you didn’t want things to end up awkward between you two, “Anyways, Helmeppo, could you give us some privacy?”
The blond nodded, a small smirk on his face, “Fine by me, I’m heading home. Have fun, you two, but not too mu-“
“Ahahahaha!” Koby let out an embarrassed laugh, making it loud enough to interrupt his friend’s sentence, “Weren’t you gonna go? Hurry up, the sun’s gonna set soon.”
“Yeah, yeah.” You let out a small giggle, Koby smiling warmly at the sound of your melodic voice.
Once the two of you were alone (save for the fact your friends were eavesdropping behind a nearby wall), Koby’s attention turned back to you.
Well, it’s too late to run and pack your luggage to another country.
His blue eyes meet yours, before quickly shifting to your lips, “So, (Y/N). What was it that you wanted to tell me?”
It’s like your mouth moved before you were able to think clearly, “Do you know what today is?”
He blinked in confusion, trying to piece together what you called him to meet up for.
“Wednesday…?” You made a rolling motion with your hands to encourage him to continue guessing, “The 14th… of February…”
“Valentine’s Day.” “Yup!” Pulling out the heart shaped box filled with the handmade chocolates from your bag, you offer them to Koby.
“Oh, that’s so cool!” The two of you then proceeded to stand there in silence, the boy processing your actions.
As soon as he fully processed what was going on, Koby face began to turn as red as a tomato, “Wait, for- for me?”
You nodded with a smile, even though you could hear yourself screaming inside your head to say something.
“Surely you didn’t mistake me for anyone else….”
“Who else do I know has pink hair?” As soon as he opened his mouth, you interjected, “That I have feelings for!”
His hands were slightly shaking, delicately taking the box from your hands like you just gave him a fragile item. He started feeling a little lightheaded at your confession, trying not to faint out of excitement knowing that his crush liked him back.
The second your hands made contact with his, you couldn’t help but notice how soft they were.
“Thank you.. but, are you sure?” Blinking in disbelief at your heartfelt gift, the pink haired boy didn’t think he was worthy to be the recipient of your affections, let alone anyone’s affections, “I’m not the, um, ideal boyfriend…”
He had never gotten a genuine love confession before or liked someone as much you. How was he supposed to react?
But upon meeting your eyes once again, Koby’s ones widened at your radiant smile.
“I don’t want or expect you to be a perfect boyfriend, I like you the way you are.” Realising you may have assumed he likes you back, you wave your hands, “That’s if you want to be my boyfriend! I’m not forcing you, we can just continue being friends!”
Koby copies your hand gesture and the same embarrassed expression, “No, actually, I’d really lo- like! I’d like to be your boyfriend and go on a date sometime if that’s okay with you!”
Silence fills the air for a few seconds as you process what he had just said.
“That’s okay with me.” The two of you flash smitten grins at one another, the sky turning pink behind you as the sun continued to set.
"WOOHOO-" Usopp’s cheers that caught your attention was cut off, turning into muffled comments of excitement when Nami hastily put her hand on his mouth.
Robin had to stifle a laugh at the comical sight, covering her mouth with her fist.
Koby’s head turned back to you, a little flustered now that he was reminded that your friends were watching.
“Are you, uh, free this Friday?”
“We could go talk about the details over some dinner,” An attempt at a seductive smile made its way onto your face, but the realisation that you might look stupid turned that smile into a more nervous one, “If that’s alright with you?”
“Oh um, of course!”
His hand reached out to yours, and without a single word, you took it, beginning to walk hand in hand around the park.
“Also, if you open the box…” “White chocolate, you remembered!”
“Next time I’ll make dark chocolate ones.” You gave an innocent smile.
His face shifted to an overly exaggerated disgusted expression, “…”
“What’s with that look?” “Please don’t, they’re gross.” “They’re not too bad!”
Tumblr media
“Now I don’t have to endure Koby talking about asking her out…” Helmeppo let out a sigh of relief, happy for his friend and for his poor ears.
The blond had been walking home until he caught the sight of the three hiding behind the wall, wanting to join them to see what would happen between his best friend and you.
Robin smiles, “But now you have to listen to him talk about his girlfriend.”
The four stand there in silence for a few moments, waiting for a response from the blond man.
“I think I’m gonna buy some ear plugs before tomorrow’s shift.”

Helmeppo - Blondy and Scissors
Tumblr media
Helmeppo (netflix) x fem reader
warning : fluff, comfort, kiss, no use of Y/n
masterlist
Info : So not only Buggy, Mihawk, Sanji are hot in the netflix series Helmeppo is also. So with just some hours of sleep and a hard school day behind me I have writen this. Have fun reading ;)
~~~~~~~~~~
The well-known only son of Morgan was known everywhere, or so he thought. Enough for the naval base and the surrounding city. The blond son, with his purple suit and light-coloured shirt, was a style not everyone dared to wear.
But to talk to him about it was something no one dared to do because of his father. A truth he did not admit to himself. Something he always tried to suppress in the form of new clothes, alcohol or the odd gun. Until he met her. Learned to trust and see other sides.
The only person he trusted or at least felt a strange bond with was his hairdresser and seamstress, a nice but stubborn young woman. A woman who did not lie to him, did not tell him what he wanted to hear and did not show him the respect he deserved in his eyes.
All due to a wrong upbringing, too much money and no taste in fashion. But none of that mattered because the bond he held in his heart was worth more to him than his father, he realised.
A fact that had confused him since his father had introduced them to him after his son had not let up. He desperately wanted a new suit and a haircut. An improvement in his appearance and his father could no longer listen to his son's whining. So he got him the best local hairdresser who seemed to be more at second glance.
But neither Morgan nor his son did. ,,Sit down if you keep shouting I'm going to stick you with a pin" was the first thing she said to him after he asked her to get a warm cup of tea before anything happened. It was a simple request, he thought to himself, and he already wanted to say something back.
To nag her about how she dared to speak to him like that. But one touch on his tie was enough to pull him towards her. He took in her smell of fabric, flowers and leather, which now seemed to surround him. A certain freedom he did not have, being too caught up in his own prestige.
Her gaze was punitive and reminded him almost of a strict mother or something else. ,,,Understood...Ma'm" he murmured then and almost made himself small on the chair. But his gaze did not leave her, fascinated by her, he continued to look at her. He liked her somehow.
Her way she made less fun of herself than the others. Didn't do it behind his back and apparently said it freely. Not least, his heart had gone a step faster when her hand had tightened on his tie. His air had been tied up for a moment and his life was in her hands.
Only when she let go of him did the blond seem to be able to breathe again and let his hand rub over his neck did he still smell her scent. The very leather reminded him of something he knew.
As if he had already seen it somehow. Before he turned back to the front and in front of him was the large oval mirror. He watched intently as she picked out her clothes, her trained eyes going from his face with the bright eyes to his blond slightly dull and matted hair.
He flinched in surprise then as her fingers suddenly raked through his hair. ,,Careful," he said quietly, indignant, trying to adjust himself in the chair or stand over her. Still aware of his place She's just a hairdresser he thought, sounding clearly more surprised than he thought he was.
His reluctance was somehow confused. The touching of another was unfamiliar to him. Apart from the one or two paid women who also dumped him. His kind was repulsive something that had hurt him but she. Not her.
She did her job and didn't mind it. ,,I'll give you a new haircut and start designing a new suit" she announced as she took her fingers off him. Letting go of his blond hair, he spun around in the chair in surprise. Not knowing that to her he looked like a cute naive dog.
He woke up from his stupor when he had her in his field of vision again. The tingling sensation that had spread over his body was woolly and new at the same time. Even though he tried to forget it later with a little alcohol, he did not.
The wine and beer did not seem to help as they usually did. ,,A hairstyle and a suit should look stately," he said, and for a moment he seemed to have recovered his haughty manner. He saw her give him an incredulous yet slightly amused look as she returned with the cutting utensils.
Everything ready for his new haircut, their eyes met one last time before she pushed him into the chair and ordered him to hold still. To his amazement he did, he held on and let her work on him with the metal objects.
But his blue eyes remained on her, not leaving her for a moment. In the end, he almost didn't care what his hairstyle looked like. ,,What do you say Helmeppo?" she asked as she started to gather her things after looking at him.
She saw him flinch as if she had caught him doing something. Something forbidden. She saw him wondering whether he should scold her and threaten his father.
Instead, he almost jumped up from his chair, grabbed his suit jacket and shouted effusively, ,,Thank you, Miss.Hairdresser!" before fleeing from her shop, leaving only the crashing of the door. The last thing he heard from her was a hearty laugh.
A laugh that made him go mad as his heart beat faster. For the two of them it seemed to be a connection that lay between them. A connection that was so much more on his part that she gladly returned with some behaviour.
They met a few more times after that and after the blonde had gathered all his courage to ask her for a meal together it happened. The next meeting was one that no one really expected. Shortly after the pirates arrived, his hairdresser had disappeared and left the island. Left without a word.
Their date as he had hoped would not happen. Now he was stuck in the navy with Coby, who wasn't much help - at least he had resumed his snooty ways. Although he actually wanted to get rid of it, it seemed like a protective shield because he knew exactly that he could hardly do anything.
But he got a chance to serve with Coby as a cadet under Garb, the legend of the navy, a man of honour, not like his father. A man he also respected. But as the ship sailed on across the sea in search of the straw hat, they passed another ship.
A naval ship on which there was a certain woman. ,,Flotilla Admiral Scissors!" someone announced to the admiral, who came on board the ship with some of her men. ,,I don't believe it," the blond blurted out as his eyes looked at the woman who only a few weeks ago seemed to be his hairdresser and dressmaker. ,,Well, if it isn't blondie. How are you? Is the old man treating you well?" she said and giggled when she saw Garp's eye glare, which he had long since resigned himself to.
Even though she had the lowest rank as Admiral, she was a valued member and had been personally assigned to look out for corrupt Navy people. One she found in the form of Morgan and pulled her strings. ,,No, I have an ugly uniform," he immediately began to complain, but was interrupted by a hug she gave him.
Even though he was aware of her worried look because of his hair, ,,I missed you, pain in the ass," she murmured, smiling at his tension because he was afraid she would hear his heart. But the smell that surrounded her again. He recognised it as a uniform from his father's room the evidence had been wafting in front of him all along.
But there was not much time for a greeting before they all had to go about their tasks. Something that bothered him but the thought of being able to join her again was tempting. It's been ages since I've seen you, he thought as he cleaned the deck with the mop.
But the more he wiped with it, the more he seemed to fall into a little dance. A dance with her. It would be a scandalous relationship, a cadet and an admiral. But after a few more turns, he heard a smirk and feared the worst, but only saw her.
Leaning against one of the masts, she had been watching him. ,,You've changed a bit, and I don't mean the haircut," she joked, watching him further, her badges on her uniform flashing in the moonlight. They let him know what she had already achieved, even if it was mostly in the field of the hidden.
It suited her, he thought. ,,Yeah, well, the haircut is a bit strange, a pirate...but-but changed what do you mean?" he asked, slightly confused, and slowly moved back to the railing against which he was leaning, looking out to sea.
He heard her approach him and lean beside him, deliberately bumping her shoulder against his. ,,Well, you're no longer, to put it crudely, the stuck-up son...now you're just a little stuck-up" she joked and smirked, seeing that it made him think and yet something like relief showed in his gaze. She was glad that he was no longer under his father. Of course she knew that the blond wasn't perfect.
But with her and Coby it seemed to be going in the right direction. ,,Less stuck-up sounded good, besides, I'm-I'm glad to see you again," he confessed, and in surprise her gaze turned from the sea to the blond. In the moonlight and the lamps on deck, she saw the slight flush on his cheeks. Cute. ,,Come here, Goldilocks!" she called and pulled him into another hug before tousling his messy hair.
Before she could get past that certain something between them, he grabbed her hand and wouldn't let go before she gave him a short but heartfelt kiss.
He felt himself sighing, finally having what he had always wanted. Love. He continued to hold on to her as if his life depended on it before she pushed him away slightly as the blonde seemed to almost take her breath away.
Laughing, she pulled him behind her and said, ,,Let's give you a proper haircut first!" before they disappeared into the admiral's cabin to give the blonde a decent haircut. As good as it could be. But in the end, perhaps their influence led them to get Helmeppo and Coby's group to look for the straw hat.
A victory for Helmeppo who, with the help of his friend of sorts, tried to get closer and closer to the admiral. He wanted more than just the kiss and she wanted more from him. The blond preppy realised that there was also friendship and love in the navy.
Hi everyone, I've been inactive because my obsession changed and I lost motivation to draw one piece fanart.
I'm currently focusing on my studies (I am a second year university student) as well as putting more energy into my new interest that is completely unrelated from one piece.
Although I still casually watch the show and love the characters very much (especially Koby and Helmeppo) I no longer have the same intense feelings about them and I can't spend as much time indulging in media relating to this series.
I don't think I'll be active here anymore unfortunately, I might occasionally log in just to keep the account from being completely abandoned in case I want to return but I currently do not plan to make more art or any new posts at all.
Sorry for leaving like this but my obsession ended and I have no time to draw for a casual interest.
It was a good half a year of drawing kobymeppo almost daily :,)
Thank you for supporting my art! Bye bye! 🫶
YAY, OPLA is still in the top 10 - top 4 most streamed last week - this week, in it's sixth week of airing! See ↓↓ from here: Twitter Link
Tumblr media
In my personal opinion, that's looking good. It's also interesting to compare OPLA's streaming stats week by week compared to several other shows in the top 10 (but in saying that... I haven't had time to do a full comparison, just bits here and there, so I can't say anything for sure...still, it's very interesting to look at!! And considering, I usually don't have the time or effort to follow any other show in such detail... but One Piece has such a special place in my heart!)
I finally am back round with screenshots from Episode 6 - and my thoughts on the episode. I also really loved this episode, the cast has so many good moments, and I love how we see the crew bond and develop through one of the biggest trials of the Straw Hat pirates friendship.
Highlights of Ep 6:
Do you know how much I love these sets? Why sometimes I love live action? Because we get to see even more sides to the manga panels, to the anime scenes that probably weren’t important or thought about at the time. For example, I love that we get to see more of the inside of the Going Merry (we do see this in the manga, but there's something more intricate and detailed about the live action's adaptation)
The interactions between Koby and Garp. The more times I re-watch OPLA, the more I like these interactions. I like them because we get to see Koby develop and how Garp becomes his and Helmeppo's mentor (something we only see in cover stories in OP, before their big appearance at the end of a specific arc, where the Koby and Helmoppo have clearly grown up.)
The interaction between Garp and Mihawk. This is OP only, and we see a different kind of Warlord/Marine interaction past the East Blue Saga in the One Piece Manga. I liked that this was introduced in OPLA season 1, it does so many wonderful things like, give us more Mihawk time (those who know, know how rare he is in the manga, but beloved despite those rare appearances), show us more of how the Warlord system works/or does work, and of course hammers in other plot points for OPLA. (Also, Steven John Ward is such a magnificent Mihawk.)
The interaction between Sanji, Usopp, and Luffy. When Luffy speaks of Wado Ichimonji, and pronounces the name completely wrong in a very Luffy way, sometimes I ask myself, do I love this line in OPLA because I know it’s a very Luffy trait from the manga, or do I love it because Inaki delivers this line so well?
This episode gives us more wonderful expressions from the cast. Taz is such a fantastic Sanji and Jacob is pretty good as Usopp. They're both great in this episode. I've heard some people complain that Usopp and Sanji were done a bit dirty in season 1, but truthfully, I have high hopes that the showrunners will give them more space for development in season 2 now that they've been introduced. If you squash everything into season 1, that only leaves less space for character development on screen later on. So I'm looking forward to seeing OPLA develop some of our favourite OP characters in their way, but faithful to Oda's vision.
I love how they did Sanji's backstory. They did not skimp on the truth behind Zeff's leg, which the anime does, and the manga is a little more brutal on.
You know, sometimes I had my doubts, before OPLA was released, on whether Craig Fairbrass would make a good Zeff. There were so many white actors and I like hmmm. But, damn it all, he’s perfect. He brings Zeff alive with so much zest and flavour. Both in present and the past flashbacks. It was wonderful. (Also, it does make me laugh every time I see his braided mustache jumping when he speaks, love it.)
Christian Convery is also fantastic as young Sanji. He acts wonderfully. He's like a little angelic cherub, and thus for the extended starvation period, he was a little too fleshy, however, this is a child (and we can't ask him to starve just for acting at his age, and for something like this in a tv series, I'd much rather the vfx went to the bigger elements, like Buggy's devil fruit powers, Luffy's devil fruit powers, the Sea King, etc.), and his acting still managed to convince me that he had been starving for days.
And as usual, I can't fit all the screenshots here ... see Part 2: Here, and Part 3: Here.
I’m very glad the One Piece live action left Rika and Gin in, even if it scrapped most of their story lines.
Luffy grew up watching and admiring Shank’s crew. And to be honest, Shanks is the only REAL pirate crew Luffy had much exposure to growing up. (Blue jam could be considered too, but he was operating more like a bandit by the time the brothers were assisting him than sea pirates). Because of them, Luffy had rather romantic ideas of what a pirate should be. They should be people who live to party, who eat and drink while singing and overall being in a celebratory mood. He saw them as free and adventurous spirits, who traveled the world chasing dreams and treasure.
But one other thing Shanks really taught Luffy, was his code. Luffy isn’t a hero. Technically he isn’t a ‘good guy’ either. Luffy will help someone who needs it, but usually it’s because he’s effected in some way. He befriended someone, he liked the attitude someone showed, he wanted some food, ect. Luffy doesn’t go out of his way to liberate countries like the Revolutionaries but he also doesn’t stand by and watch people suffer or be hurt either.
Luffy became a pirate with the goal in mind to have a crew better than Shank’s. That meant all the people in the crew had to be ‘good’ people in the way Luffy saw real pirates being. People who wanted dreams and adventures, not to pillage or harm others. People who would follow Luffy’s path but also not be afraid to tell Luffy what they need to tell him to keep him from veering off too. And with all that in mind, Luffy was actually pretty careful in his crew selection, especially in the beginning.
Usopp was originally turned down (to be Captain by Usopp’s own offer) before the crew saw what he could do and brought him in. Nami was also someone Luffy saw a bit in action before he fully cemented his ideas on her too. But Zoro and Sanji were the ones that we really see the moment where Luffy decided he cannot have his crew without them.
When Luffy was first talking about and to Zoro, he even said he wasn’t sure if he would invite Zoro to join his crew. Luffy’s attention was definitely captured when he saw Zoro not only attempt to chase Rika away from the marine’s grounds before she was spotted but then eating the disgusting rice balls and telling Luffy to inform Rika that not only had Zoro eaten all of it, but that he liked it. Now Luffy had no way of knowing that Zoro hated sweets at that time, but he did know the rice was full of dirt and mud and it wasn’t good due to Helmeppo’s reaction. Luffy knew that Zoro was doing it to be kind to Rika. Then Rika told Luffy about how Zoro was only in the situation because not only did he protect Rika, a complete stranger, but he also gave himself up in her place to be punished! Zoro had actually put himself at risk to protect a little girl and despite the danger he was in, he still prioritized the strange girl’s feelings above his own welfare. Luffy had realized that at his core, Zoro was a kind and honorable man and adamantly refused to leave Shell’s Town without Zoro.
Then Luffy had already met Sanji and was interacting with him, but Luffy didn’t show any interest in Sanji as a crew member until the incident with Gin. Gin had already presented himself as a threat, pointing a gun at the cooks and threatening to shoot them for food. Yet Sanji showed great kindness, compassion, and empathy for Gin by going into the kitchen and making Gin something to eat. Sanji couldn’t stand by and watch a man suffer while the other cooks had been content to toss Gin out and wash their hands of him. And when Luffy saw Sanji feed Gin, Luffy had said right then that he had found his cook.
I am sad we didn’t get many characters that we loved in the live action, but I honestly don’t think you could show Luffy’s recruitment of Zoro and Sanji without Rika and Gin.
OPLA episode 1 - first impressions
Just randomly trying to summarize my thoughts here, because they are in no way coherent yet, but hooooly shit, I like where this is going. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Tumblr media
I decided to start watching in English, then in Japanese, then in German - because I would assume that'd be the best order to judge both the best and worst parts of this. Best as in "the intentions of the dialogue, the framing and hinting", worst in "Oh God, the cringe is real". So far, there obviously have been a few lines that have been very obvious, because you HAVE to translate a lot of things that work for an anime INTO this setting. More tell than show so to speak, but I feel like that's perfectly fine for the medium.
Luffy is endearing - the first thing you can tell in comparison to anime!Luffy is that he's got that positive main-character-energy that not only speaks his thoughts out loud, but also tries his best to make you see what kind of character you are dealing with. He was brash, stubborn and had very one-dimensional (and toxic) ideas of what and how a man/pirate needs to be - just to be taught kindness, perseverance and a positive attitude and by Shanks and I think that is displayed beautifully here. He does not get shy to approach everyone he meets with good will - on one hand, because he obviously wants to build his crew. On the other hand - it just shows who he is. The CGI works really well for him as well, the "stretchy kind" really doesn't seem too much out of place, but I would assume it's easier to accept it when you are already used to "anime logic".
This is a comment that was made a lot on Twitter already - so here's to the bi-/pansexual squad, because this series knows exactly what it is doing with the fanservice eye-candy. Zoro, so far, got the most impressive camera-angles/cinematography. The mysterious, aloof framing, the detailed and VERY immersive fight scenes/choreography - he's not only coming across as stoic and lone-wolfey, they definitely make sure you can TELL he is kind at heart too. You can tell he has experienced pain and that's why he insists that he needs to work alone - but if people show HIM kindness, he cannot not react in return. Whether it's Rika - or Luffy, doesn't even matter. That idealistic, kinda annoying kid saved him (and man, the hearts in Luffy's eyes were so present and all over the place, he was IMMEDIATELY enchanted by Zoro and doesn't grow tired of saying it out loud either). Plus, he didn't insist on getting anything in return, even if he still wanted him on his crew... So what happens? Once Zoro sees that he's in trouble, he jumps in to fight as well. And they IMMEDIATELY work off of each other well. "You go above, I go below". As someone who has ALWAYS enjoyed Luffy's and Zoro's dynamic (platonic and otherwise), I am obviously VERY easy to please here, but man, it works. So well. I cannot WAIT to see their Captain/First Mate dynamic develop. Also... I did not expect them to actually let any character use the middle finger??? I mean, good for you, Zoro, you go be edgy as fuck, but hey... (Also, the gay subtext with Helmeppo was definitely... Something...? But I mean... The gay subtext exists with ZoLu too. "Where does the third sword even go...?" I mean... Seriously...)
On the other spectrum of the bi-/pansexual eyecandy, we have Nami. And while she visibly uses her charms (read: physical attributes) to get what she wants, I am HELLA pleased that she wasn't sexualized yet. I really liked the nudge towards her concept art design! Her cheekiness and smartness come across very well. And, MAN, the dynamic with Luffy is PRICELESS. It really has a lot of sibling energy - but it also leaves a lot open. Of course, we're still at the VERY beginning of it, but as a long-term fan of the series, it's hard not to read anything into it ("I will never join anything with you" is beautiful foreshadowing and also interestingly phrased).
Oh Romance Dawn Trio, my heart. The moment they lined up next to each other, Nami and Zoro on each of Luffy's side, insisting "Not a crew/Not together!" was just... Chef's kiss. I love these dorks and their dynamics so much and I cannot wait to see this further emphasized.
Honorable mentions for other characters - I know it has been said many times before, but I really enjoy the casting. Koby is very relatable and he fits the character so well (I literally cannot wait for his glow-up), Shanks gives the vibe of the "kind and sweet everyday guy-mentor" at this point in time so perfectly, Alvida was great so far and I could go on...
Cringe is dead, I am so excited for episode 2.
My impressions regarding OPLA
I've never been shy about naming One Piece as one of my favorite, if not the favorite, anime/manga of all times. It's comedy, story arcs, character building, world building, etc, all of this makes it a great piece of entertainment and simply a wonderful journey to go on. So, here are some of the things I really liked and those which I liked a little bit less in the OPLA. (which was still really great in my opinion!)
SPOILERS for OPLA and One Piece under the cut
What I enjoyed:
Sanji. Let me just kick this off by saying that LA Sanji does such a great job. From the casting to the subtle differences and normalization of his 'quirks', Sanji is such a great character in OPLA. He is the perfect foil and 'calming down' factor for the lackluster Strawhats gathered up until the Baratie arc. While his flirting in the og makes him a bit obnoxious for me, the toned down version of OPLA is just on point. Everything is executed perfectly. The vocabulary he uses, the cooking, the fighting, the flirting, I'm just in love with OPLA Sanji. His backstory packs a punch, as it always did, and it doesn't feel rushed or forced. The crying is also on point. The only thing which could've been improved on was his leaving of Baratie.
Sets. The visuals are perfection. Like, this was it. It was One Piece. The world was there, in live action. All the little cultural details added and portrayed were absolutely stunning. I could see exactly where the budget went. It was on. point. I have nothing to add. It's perfection.
Fight scenes. All of the fans of the og I've spoken to were slightly worried about the adaptation of typical shonen fights, abundant in OP, being presented in OPLA. Needless to say, they were a perfect balance of flashy and entertaining, without going over the top or running for too long. Even Kuro's style was adapted amazingly for the live action. Here, I only have to add that Zoro and Nami seemed to overshadow Luffy a bit when it came to fighting, and this was a tad of a pity. With a little bit more screen time for the theatrics at the beginning of OP (where everyone is shocked to find out that Luffy has eaten a Devil Fruit), the issue could've been solved.
The pacing. Another thing which typically turned away anime watchers from OP og was the sheer size of the massive franchise. OPLA solves this issue very well, condensing and separating flashbacks, including them at different moments in order to provide for a more watchable show. Simply, great.
Side characters. I could go on and on about the amazing casting and screen time awarded to the side characters in the OPLA. Let me just list some of them who impressed me: Koby, Helmeppo, Buggy, Kuro. They shined. Every single moment of them was pure perfection. I was particularly impressed with Koby's portrayal. I was also on board with the slight addition of horror to Kuro and the Syrup village arc. I was completely in love with how Buggy ate up every scene he was in, going from a terrifying villain to a funny antagonist who is in for the ride with the main crew. Helmeppo's showcasing was perfect. I'm just impressed. I was shook. No other comments regarding this. Simply on point.
The different point of view. It's no secret that the og focuses heavily on the Stawhats. Their stories and development take the majority of the show, which is amazing. Still, the addition of little details, for the og fans, was definitely a treat. If I were to name an example, Mihawk's decimation of Don Krieg is a highlight. Small scenes which were off-screen in the og, being added to the OPLA, were satisfying to watch.
In conclusion, there were a lot of things I adored about the OPLA, but these were the ones I really wanted to highlight.
What I didn't like:
Zoro. As someone who was a firm simp for Zoro from the beginning of the og, I was a little disappointed with the OPLA version of him. The switch from 'a strong dumbass' to 'angsty swordsman' was a little bit too much for me. Simply, it seemed more like a Sasuke interpretation of Zoro, than Zoro. Like it was Sasuke acting as Zoro, or something similar. This, in turn, changed his relationships with the rest of the crew. The most painful one for me was his relationship with Luffy. Og Zoro never really disrespected Luffy nor was he ever visibly annoyed with his captain. OPLA Zoro is just... annoyed. Which makes one think - why does he even join the crew? Not to say that I hated OPLA Zoro, there were really some amazing moments to him. All the fight scenes were great, especially the Mihawk duel one. His oath to Luffy was also amazing. However, the 'unspoken first mate who is the backbone of Strawhats' really became a 'angsty man with anger issues and obsession with alcohol', which is, sadly, a simplification of his character.
Garp. While I agree that the depth added to Garp in the live action was great, too much time was given to him. If the focus had been more on Koby and less on Garp, I would've enjoyed the live action more. Especially the build up of Luffy's confrontation with Garp was anticlimactic in the end, where there seems to be no point in the tension which had been made previously. Simply, his appearance at the end of Water 7 was much more impactful.
Nami's arc. Nami's arc is one of my favorites from the og. Her emotional journey from hating pirates to loving Luffy and trusting him was too flat in the OPLA. Og Arlong was terrifying. Og Bell-mère's story was heart wrenching. Og Nami's decision to go with Luffy was inspiring. This arc was a huge set up for later developments with fishmen and it was simply amazing. One of the many situations where I applauded Oda later on when he expanded on the universe seamlessly. In the OPLA, this is missing. While Arlong is still terrifying, he doesn't quite pack the punch he did in the og. Luffy doesn't struggle nearly enough to defeat him, which makes later development of the universe, with Arlong as a strong character, hard to believe. Bell-mère's death made me sob like a baby in the og. It just passed by me in the OPLA. Just.. whoosh. I didn't feel enough. The emotional stakes weren't high enough. The build up wasn't there. Still, the scenes with Nami and Luffy in that arc were on point. Though, I did miss the situation where Luffy walks away from hearing Nami's story. And, I was admittedly impressed with Usopp's first highlight fight, which was left in the OPLA. Altogether, while this arc should've been the crown jewel of the first season, I felt like it really wasn't. The Mihawk duel was a much better scene.
Stawhats. I liked all of them - individually. However, their dynamic as a crew felt a bit off-kilter. Nami and Zoro openly saying 'not a crew' to Luffy all the time didn't sit right with me. Them agreeing on not being a crew simply left a sour taste in my mouth. The core of my issues with Stawhat dynamics is probably due to the change in the Zoro-Luffy relationship, which is the most charismatic in the og. Sure, Zoro wants to smack Luffy half of the time, but he doesn't. Nami is the one who disciplines the reckless captain. Luffy is the one who brings them together. The sheer disrespect (yeah, quoting here the OPLA 'mutiny') is what made their dynamics odd. And then, Usopp and Sanji being fully on board and invested made it strange. It should've been Zoro who provides the example, not Usopp and Sanji. Zoro, though, is not the one to give the faith, but instead to give the annoyance. In the end, Luffy could've definitely been more selfish. Og Luffy is charismatic because we never know what to expect from him. He's captaining how he sees fit, without consulting anyone. And it works. Og Luffy is admired because he is so eccentric. OPLA Luffy lacks that. He is unsure of himself, which makes him hard to like. While he surely is Luffy and he does an amazing job with all the necessary scenes, he lacks that conviction. And, in the end, it's his passion and conviction which makes OP so lovable, in my opinion.
To conclude, with a little more addition to recklessness and that dynamic of 'Jesus what is he doing but oh well I'm joining because it's fun' Zoro would've been on point, which would've solved the Strawhats issues. A little more time dedicated to Nami's arc would've made it pack more of a punch. A little less time to Garp would've tickled us to know more, later on. This was all solvable.
Does this mean that OPLA is not a good show? No. It's a great show. It's certainly one of the more amazing live adaptations I've seen, second only to the Kenshin movies. It's watchable, for both new fans and old fans. It makes the old fans want to re-watch or re-read the og. It makes new fans want to watch and read the og. It is visually stunning. The casting is amazing. It gives depth where needed. It makes the show appealing to all genders, races and ages of audience members. However, there is room for improvement.
Long story short, I'll be eagerly waiting to see if the dynamic of Strawhats and the climactic fights of arcs and the emotional build up in them are improved upon in the later seasons. Hopefully, we will see more of Luffy's charisma in the later episodes.
What did you think of OPLA?
Slowly bobbing your head from side to side, you hummed a merry tune from your childhood to reverberate and ricochet within the damp cavern walls. Drops of water from the pointed stalactites dripped onto your head, drenching your already soaked clothes with further murkiness from the oceanic roof.
The ropes gripping your shoulders and wrists burned with a crude jolt from your companion behind you, causing you to yelp mid-word with your song. In light of his tugging, you simply laughed and sang louder.
“The sails lay flat, the wind in her back; the ropes lay in a bind,” you yelled your tune, the echo of your voice calling back at you in a taunting mockery, “The women did wail, as the sailors set sail, leaving their seed behind-.”
“-Are you quite finished?!” His aggravated tone cut your voice off, tugging the ropes and prompting you to lull your head behind you on his shoulder. “It’s bad enough being bound to a damn pirate, let alone one that doesn’t shut up!” You laughed from your position, back to back and tied to the enemy while sitting atop a large rock and awaiting death.
“Aww, pretty marine,” you coo at him behind you, nuzzling almost affectionately against his shoulder with a hint of teasing, “I thought my singing would bring such joy as we await our imminent doom.” He shrugged away from your head, prompting you to laugh harder as he burned you with the intensity of your ties.
Both of your hands were bound to each other at the wrists, your companion wriggling and attempting to free himself the moment he awoke from behind you. Your crews arrived at this strange island at the same time, immediately engaging in a heated battle filled with bloodshed and chaos. The locals did not take kindly to the ruckus and immediately implored you to stick to their stance with neutrality.
Both your crew and the marine crew surrendered and awaited adequate punishment for tainting the shore with battle and bloodshed. The punishment chosen for you was to select a member of each crew, bind them together in ropes, and place them in a cave mouth to await the tide to enter. If you managed to escape before the water choked you with its salty embrace, the marines and the pirates would be permitted to leave. If you drowned, both crews would live out the days on the island and serve the queen as her loyal slaves.
Before your captain or the pink-haired marine captain could react and volunteer themselves, both you and the blondie stepped forward and gave yourselves up. Without further warning, both of you were injected with a local toxin to cause you to fall into a deep slumber, likely to make the journey more difficult to return to your crews.
“These ropes are strong,” he growled, thrusting his chest forward and prompting you to arch your back up into him, “I can’t get the damn thing loose.” You simply offer him a condescending “Mm-hmm, that’s the point,” and let him keep moving your body around to wriggle free.
“When you’re quite ready,” you offer him, wincing as he leaned forward, “I have a blade hidden in my back pocket. I can reach it, but I will need you to stop wriggling so I can get to it.” He huffed out an exasperated breath and you felt him shake his head in agitation.
“And why are you telling me this now, pirate?” he growled at you, attempting to look at you over his shoulder to no avail, “You could’ve cut us out the whole time, and neglected to mention it?” You laughed, feeling his hands go limp to allow you to search through your pockets without a struggle.
“You were too busy being a grumpy marine to use your mind,” you shrugged, feeling the handle of the blade with your fingertips, “Always underestimating your opponents and too hot headed to exercise your brain along with your other muscles.” You use your index and middle fingers to draw the blade closer to you, finally clutching it in your hands.
The seaspray began to rise, the cave mouth starting to fill with the swell of water just as you readied the small knife to cut your bonds.
“If I nick you with the blade,” you smirk, beginning to cut through the fibers, “I’m not sorry.” The man behind you began to growl at you, holding still and allowing you to work at the ropes with ease. The first few strands came loose, giving your wrists enough room to wriggle a little easier to get enough momentum to cut easier.
“What’s your name, anyway, marine?” you asked him suddenly, feeling a little bolder and at ease now that your bonds were turning loose. He inhaled a soft breath, uttering quietly to you in response.
“Helmeppo,” he confessed his name with a soft nod, “And you, pirate?” You giggle in response, uttering your name hastily before rolling his title over on your tongue to sample the flavor.
“And who are you to your captain, Helmeppo?” you ask him, humming the same tune from earlier, a little quieter as you worked. He exhaled a laugh through his nose, “I am his first mate and swordsman. You?”
“I am the navigator and blade thrower,” you nod along, the tune never ceasing as you feel one of your wrists finally come loose. You raise it to your side and give it a soft shake and breathe slowly while stretching the limb.
Making quick work on the other side now that your wrist was free, you reach up and begin to saw at the bonds around your chest and shoulders, noticing the ties are a little more complex than you assumed they were initially. Cutting through the strands, you finally feel them come loose enough to wriggle free.
“Well now,” you sighed in relief, beginning to stand on the large rock and look down to the icy depths of the sea, “Can you swim, first-mate? Not a devil-fruit user by any chance, are you?” You looked to the blonde man beside you as he shook his head.
“I’m not the best swimmer, unfortunately,” he confessed, looking down at the sea rising up the rock, “Not a user, though. I can stay afloat just fine.” You nod along, looking at the cave mouth and angling your chin to the side with narrow eyes.
“That doesn’t look right to me,” you nod your forehead to the mouth of the cave, “The light is all wrong, and the swell in water is too rapid. I think it's a false entrance.” He looked to the mouth and nodded his head along.
“You’re the navigator,” he nodded to you, testing your knowledge beneath his staring gaze, “I am electing to trust you with this. Where do you think we should start?” You hummed in thought, gazing up at the roof and narrowing your eyes at the sight of the luminescent lights surrounding the stalactites.
“Not a swimmer, but are you a climber?” you asked him, reaching for his chin with your index finger and thumb before turning his attention to the ceiling, “We need to go up there.” He allowed you to move his face and look at the small opening in the roof wall. He sighed another huff of exasperated breath and shook his head.
“If I had my sword, it would be far easier to scale the walls,” he nodded, looking around the rock you were standing on. The surface was like an island in comparison to the other rocks surrounding the room, no way off the surface without swimming, and no way up without reaching the spherical sides to the rocky room.
You hummed, tucking your blade back behind you and looked down into the water, noticing a faint light coming from the center beneath the rock. Widening your eyes, you stared more intentionally beneath the water, noticing the light began to travel towards you both.
“Helmeppo?” you ask him with a small hint of panic, backing away from the water below, “I don’t think we’re alone in here.” You held onto his arm and dragged him to the center of the rock, looking up at the tiny hole in the roof before looking at your blonde, apprehensive companion.
Darting his eyes down to the depths below, he noticed the same scaly visage beneath the surface, swirling in a circle around the rock you were marooned on. He darted his eyes back to you and drifted his eyes frantically around your features.
“A sea beast?” He asked in a low tone, prompting you to nod in confirmation. He sucked in a hiss through his teeth and looked up to the small hole above you, “We’re going to need to find some type of raft to have us go through the water towards the walls, and pray the beast doesn’t consume us. Then climb to the top of the cave with nothing but our knuckles, aren’t we?”
You look up at the ceiling before looking at the fraying strands of rope you hacked at moments prior. Cursing under your breath, you dropped to your knees and began reweaving the strands that you cut with your dagger.
“Fuck,” you bark at yourself, grimacing as you hastily rotate the strands and coil them back together. He looked down to your position and his eyes widened in horror as he realized what was occurring. Sniffing back your stupidity, the water continued racing in from the false cave mouth and elevating the water level higher.
“Can you fix it before the water reaches us?” He looked to the ropes before looking towards the rapidly rising sea water. You growled, balling your hands into fists and continuing to coil the strands around each other.
“It’ll get done,” you assure him with a rumbly growl in your tone, “But it’s not going to be reinforced enough to hold both of our weight at once.” He cocked his head to the side, a perplexed expression drifting over his face.
“What do you mean?” he asked, kneeling beside you and searching your face for hidden intentions. You huff out a shaky breath, gesturing to your back pocket and to the ends of the rope.
“I’m going to attach the rope to the blade, throw it through the hole and wind against a stalactite,” you nod upwards, refusing to turn your eyes away from your busy hands. “Then we're going to climb through the hole and reach the surface,” you admit, finally looking up at him, “But we can’t both go at the same time. The rope is too frail and fragile.”
His eyes widened, searching your eyes for dishonesty and ill intent. Upon finding none, he growled beneath his breath.
“So, what then?” he huffed out, a small scoff underlying in his tone, “One of us climbs up and then the other begins the climb up after? Is that what you’re suggesting-.”
“-That’s precisely what I’m suggesting,” you cut him off with a soft snarl, “One of us will have to wait and trust the other from their position above.” You continued coiling and twisting the ropes, your hands shaking in a soft rage and lip quivering in reaction to the fear of what’s to come.
After a soft moment of silence, you concluded your twisting and looked up at the blonde-haired marine beside you.
“I have impeccable aim,” you reassure him, fastening the end to your blade after you retracted it from your rear pocket, “Hold the end of the rope and let me aim, please. In silence.” He nodded, eagerly taking your orders and you breathed through your concerns as the water rose over the soft edge.
The fins of a large creature slowly flew above the surface, Helmeppo’s eyes widening as he witnessed the scaly spine of the Sea Beast below the surface. You refused to tear away your eyes from the target ahead, exhaling slowly as you aimed at the wall within the hole.
In a swift thrust, you threw the blade within the air and the rope began to soar through the barely illuminated dome towards the stalactites. Embedding with a swift thud, the end of the rope was hanging limply within Helmeppo’s hands as he continued to search the water for the approaching beast circling below.
Turning to him and noticing his look, you breathed out a melancholy breath of air. Hardening your resolve, you gently reached up and squeezed his shoulder to draw his attention back to you.
“Right then,” you nodded with a hasty sniff of steely determination, “Off you go. Quickly.” He turned to you, looking down in shock as you gestured for him to begin the climb. He began to speak, prompting you to shake your head and halt his thoughts.
“Helmeppo,” you reassured him, squeezing him once more, “This is how it has to be. I am a pirate, a blade thrower and a navigator. You are the first-mate to a marine captain and a swordsman. I would not be able to help you with the rope once I got up there, if anything goes awry,” you confess, softly giving him a pat to spur him on, “You would likely not trust me to aid you anyway, and I feel like you would do the right thing if given the opportunity to do so.”
His shock deepened, the rope feeling hot in his hands the longer he held it between his fingers.
“Go, Helmeppo,” you tapped him once more to break him out of his frantically racing thoughts. He gave you a soft nod, gulping back his nerves and beginning a hasty climb up the ropes. He tested his weight, tugging firmly twice before throwing his entire weight into his ascension.
You had no choice but to watch on as the rope began to bend under the strain of his weight. Looking to the water, the levels began gently rising in soft, taunting ripples as the tide began to come in. A call of your name from the blonde swordsman above the ropes redrew your attention to Helmeppo above you.
“Distract yourself,” he ordered you, straining as his arms and thighs curled around the hanging rope. “Sing your silly songs to me, talk to me about your crew, tell me anything you want.” He growled, gritting his teeth and tugging his body above the rope. You gulped back your fear and inhaled a deep lungful of air.
“I have only ever known a life of piracy,” you confessed, nodding your confirmation and solidifying your words, “Born and raised on the sea, reading the stars and charting my course.”
Helmeppo grunted on the ropes, continuing his slow climb as the water rose around you. You continued thinking about the circumstances that brought you here to this moment. Smiling a soft smile, you look down at your toes and reminisce about your life.
“I learned to read the stars from my mother,” you nod slowly, laughing a soft chuckle as you add, “I look like her, too. The crew says she and I are nothing alike, but I like to think we're similar. She was a noble.” You admit, looking back up to Helmeppo as he nearly reached the top.
He huffs and pants, finally drawing his fingers up to the coarse wall and reaching for a sturdy rock to grip. Reflecting on your words, he thinks over your confessions with interest but remains too preoccupied in his task to ask you any questions.
The water rises closer to your toes, two beady eyes glaring at you beneath the surface and waiting for the water to lap at your ankles before making its move. You pay the eyes no mind, looking up and reassuring Helmeppo as he attempts to grip the walls for a third time to no avail.
“You're doing well,” you offer him with no malice or sarcasm in your tone, “Take your time, I'll be right here.” He scoffed out a soft laugh at your response, wedging the rope between his thighs and using your blade attached to the top to pull himself closer to the wall.
The water caresses your toes with a soft propulsion, your heels not faring better as the water continues to rise to the peak of the small, rocky island within the damp dome. You scrunch your eyes shut, thinking about the outcome should you both fail this task. Both crews would perish on this island in servitude for the locals, your crews would mourn for you, and you would be good for the beast below the surface.
“You can do this, Helmeppo,” you again reassure him, gulping back your shaking fear and propelling confidence in your tone. “You are a swordsman, a first-mate to your captain. You have worked hard to earn those titles, just like you're working hard now. You can do this.”
Hearing your encouragement, his hands finally find purchase on the walls, anchoring himself against the hole in the surface and beginning his climb up. Just as he finally leans up, the dagger in the wall comes loose, the rope falling limp between his thighs and held up by his body alone.
Your eyes widen, your shock and his igniting desperation in your pulse. He grunted through the adrenaline, groaning as he lifted himself above the hole and braced himself against the walls. The rope began to slip, his hands darting out and grasping it before it fell back down below.
“I-I'm-...” He panted, attempting to catch his breath. Shutting his eyes and furrowing his brows, he inhaled deeply and focussed his breath, “...I'm going to have to pull you up.” His voice quivered, his lips shaking as he was overcome from momentary exhaustion at the swift climb.
“We-...” You began, feeling your shoes begin to dampen with the rise in water lapping at your boot heels, “...We’ll wait until you're ready. Take your time.” Helmeppo looked down, noticing the sea beast had begun to circle around the slowly disappearing island and exhaled a shaky breath.
Before he had joined the marines officially, he would've wanted nothing more than to leave you down there to drown. He would've cowered in his own fear and scampered up the hole without second thought.
But as he stared down at you, looking at the smile you had on your lips as you gazed up at him, the enemy, he was compelled to remember all he learnt from Bogard and Garp. He was a marine, a swordsman, and now the first-mate to his superior and best friend. He was no longer his father's son, a sniveling asshole with no marks on his resume to back up his superiority complex.
He was Helmeppo: first mate to Captain Koby, and a superior sword fighter on a journey to becoming the best.
Anchoring a few coils of rope around his waist, he gestures for you to do the same. You follow his directions, tying your hips together and wedging the strands between your legs as a makeshift harness. He extends his legs, parting his thighs and bending his knees to brace himself within the opening beneath the moonlight. Taking the rope in fistfuls, he begins to slowly draw hand after hand of rope and pool the hefty coils over his palm and elbow.
“K-Keep talking to me,” he uttered, wincing as he felt the overexertion of his muscles burning under the weight. “Keep t-talking. Anchor your weight and tell me about yourself.” His breath hitched, his brows furrowing as he grit his teeth.
You choose not to look down, opting only to grant him your smile as he lifts your body higher above the doom lurking below.
“Before I left my home,” you laughed, bracing your arms against the ropes with your forearms, “I was meant to settle down and have an army of children,” you both chuckled at the notion, his hands crawling along the strands and coiling them up higher.
“That something you want for yourself?” He winced through the strain of the ordeal, looking beneath you and noticing the rocky island was completely engulfed in water. The eyes continued to observe the two of you with interest, the creature lingering beneath the depths smiling its toothy grin.
“Absolutely not,” you confess with a laugh, gripping the ropes further and clambering up alongside his cooking advances, “I only want the open sea, the wind in the sails, and the stars to point me to my next destination.” He snickered down, growling as his limbs began to burn.
“T-Truly?” he responded with a taught snicker, “No desire to settle down and retire one day?” He continued tugging the rope and lifting you through the final threshold of the journey.
“Not in my plan, no,” you retorted, finally lifting yourself between his thighs by grasping his hips and hoisting you with your arms extended. Anchoring your heels at the wall behind you, you had no choice but to fall into his chest upon ascension.
His eyes never left your face, floating over your features and gazing up at you. Falling flat on his chest, you wriggled between his legs and drew yourself up through the partition in his thighs. You furrowed your brows as you found purchase on the wall beyond his shoulders, his eyes darting between yours and his lips parted and panting.
“Sorry,” you muffled your apologies, leaning back and gazing into his eyes. Your breath hitched, looking over his features and finally taking a moment to breathe him in. He was handsome, one of the most handsome men you had seen in some time: almost pretty.
His eyes focussed on your lips, momentarily forgetting the doom lingering below and taking you in for all that you were. You were beautiful, even for a pirate.
“We-...” he began, offering his hand out to you and aiding you between his legs, “...we should begin the climb. Can't-...” his eyes darted down to your lips and lingered there a moment longer, “-We can't leave them waiting, and the water is rising.”
You looked at his face, smiling as you hastily pushed yourself up the walls and looked down at the marine first-mate beneath you.
“Better hurry up then, blondie,” you sneered down at him before scampering throughout the walls and hovering up the small opening. He chuckled, taking a moment to catch his breath before following up the hole after you.
The water rises further below you two, your anxieties both propelling you to use each other as anchor points to propel you further up the hole towards the surface.
“Try to keep up, marine,” you teased him in soft snickers, his own laugh joining yours the longer you teased him.
“Speak for yourself, pirate,” he responded in kind, his eyes staring at your body the further up the chasm you clambered. The water began to swell further beneath you, both of you praying in gratitude that you understood the false entry that drew in the tide.
The starlight welcomed you into the night, you hoisted your torso up through the birthpoint and your eyes both met the cloudless sky above. As you exited the hole, you reached down and offered Helmeppo your arm to grip and raise through the tunnel mouth.
With a soft smirk, he clasped his hand over your forearm and used your arm to draw himself up through the small opening. Before falling onto his back and panting, he assessed the surroundings and noticed there truly was no entry to the cave from below. You were right, and he was ever grateful you noticed the trap lingering below.
Lying flat on your backs either side of the hole and catching your breath, you looked to the constellations and began searching through your mind for any direction towards your crewmates.
While you were distracted by charting the stars, Helmeppo began untying the bonds circling his waist and carefully coiling the ropes for later purpose. He wound the fibers into a neat pile beside him, before crawling on his hands and knees towards you and beginning to draw his fingers against your flesh as you muttered stars to yourself.
“The Marina Comet besides Genfry’s Belt,” you whispered, barely processing the fingers dancing over your skin and loosening the knots surrounding your pelvis. “Which means the anchor point for our vessel should be beside the Sialin Dip and Hogir Spear.” Your whispers earned you a chuckle from your blonde-haired companion as he loosened the knots of rope girdling your waist.
After uttering your final vantage point, you began to giggle. The laughter became almost overbearing as the adrenaline teetered off and lay in wake to the lethargy you were both experiencing.
The physical trial between the two of you amongst sea beasts, bondage, and trickery had each breath you took feeling like a gift to the senses. Upon loosening the final knot, Helmeppo flopped to the position beside you and chuckled into the stars. You joined him, your rambunctious laughter serenading him as you did a few hours prior with your shanties of old.
“Any-... Any thoughts on where our crews are right now?” he offered with teetered laughter. You rolled onto your side and placed your hand on his chest and gave him a soft pat in response.
“We have about a forty minute trek through the jungle before we reach the shore,” you giggled, leaning over him and gazing into his eyes, “And then it’ll be about an hour after that to make it to our ships.” You reached up, brushing his blonde hair from his face and gently caressing his cheek.
His breath hitched as his eyes met with yours, wide and shocked to receive such affection from the enemy. Conflicting emotions swirled in his mind the moment his gray orbs met your half-lidded gaze. Before he could speak, you spoke for him in a soft endearing tone.
“You know, you’re really quite pretty,” you speak as if your words contained a soft secret within. His Adams apple bobbed as he swallowed a dry mouthful of saliva and parted his quivering lips up to you. Giggling at his response, you go to draw yourself away from his embrace, only to have your wrist collected in his hand.
As you knit your brows up in confusion, he immediately sat up and drew your body close to himself. His unoccupied hand cradled the back of your head in a firm grip and drew your lips up to collide with his in a soft kiss. A squeak fled your lips in shock as your eyes remained wide and staring into the furrowed brow of your enemy.
His golden hair stuck to his face in stringy, damp strands from the salty drips from the cavern roof. The stars illuminated his pale skin and allowed you to take a glimpse at the rosy blush rising against his cheeks. You finally hum into his lips, circling his waist with your unclasped wrist, and rising to sit in his lap on the grassy patch beside the hole leading down to your prior prison.
You take his kiss as an expression of relief in reclaiming freedom, his joy at being alive and making it through the trial laid out below. Returning his kiss, you allow yourself to give in to your own relief in making it through the trial and rotate your chin to deepen the oscillation. His heart shot to this throat as he released your wrist to circle his arm around your shoulders and hold you close.
Finally and firmly breaking you away from his lips, he gazed up at you with adoration and an unspoken fondness for you. His lips were bruised by the intensity of your kiss which prompted your hands to raise to his cheeks and run your thumb over his bottom lip. Smiling down at Helmeppo, you softly offer him a small tease in your tone.
“C’mon, pretty boy,” you narrow your eyes and scrunch up your nose with your smile, “Let’s go free our crews and get off this forsaken island.” He panted slowly caressing your hair and pressed his forehead against yours briefly.
“You’re going to be the death of me, pirate,” he smiled in his tone, briefly closing his eyes. He broke away contact from your forehead and aided you to your feet. Returning your dagger to you, he hooked the coil of rope over his shoulder and let it lay circling his hip.
“After all we’ve been through? I wouldn’t dream of it,” you smile in response, placing your dagger in your back pocket and readjusting your clothes, “But do try to keep up, lover. You may be strong, but I’m faster.” You began to set an easy and hasty pace trekking through the jungle towards the coastline where your crews were waiting for you.
Aiding each other through the uneven jungle floor, and sneaking in subtle touches and holds to brace each other in support, your affection for the marine swordsman only grew. His eyes only ever left your body and face to briefly glance ahead to brush away a wandering branch from blocking your path. His chivalry was a welcome change to the bruising affection you and your crew displayed to one another.
His thoughts and emotions clouded his judgment, finally giving in to the emotion he was attempting to stifle. He was smitten with the enemy, and he knew you were likely to never see each other again after this adventure. Willing to take any touch you were permitting him to press you with, he committed the feel of your hands on his skin to memory.
He was in love, and you were feeling much the same. You both laughed at the true tragedy of the rising emotions the moment your crews came into view with the local government. Without much thinking, you hastily press a soft kiss to his cheek before sprinting to your captain on the sandy shore without further words.
Eyes shut and hands rose in front of him, he bid you a wordless farewell. Opening his eyes and watching your hair bounce behind you, he felt a piece of his heart leave him and join with your own. Sparing him a look over your shoulder, you shot him a soft wink and giggled in glee at witnessing his eyes still firmly fixed on your retreat.
You were smitten with your marine swordsman, something that the crew would likely tease you about for the whole duration of your journey out to the sea. You looked to the marine ship, your hands splayed on the wooden rail as you met the gaze of Helmeppo aboard his vessel. Gifting him a soft wave and a broad grin, he returned the gesture with a bashful smile and eyes left wanting.
Taking a mental note of the stars, you prayed that one day their soft illuminance would guide you two to meet again.
Predictions for One Piece Live Action, Season 2
Having just watched from after the Arlong Park arc to the end of the Alabasta arc, which will likely be the plot of season 2, these are how I predict the season will go.
Assuming we will keep up the eight episode format, split into pairs by director, the episodes will go as follows:
EPISODE I and II: Everything from Loguetown to Whiskey Peak, with Loguetown making up the bulk of episode one and likely cutting off as they head down reverse mountain into the Grand Line. Episode two will cover the whale at the bottom and then cover all of Whiskey Peak, ending with Vivi joining the crew. We will also likely see quite a bit of Vivi and Igaram investigating and learning the identity of Baroque Works' leader, leading to Nico Robin calling in Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine. This call will give us the giants of Elbaf in a "Don Krieg"-style cameo, with 5 and Valentine helping Mr. 3 try to capture them, before 5 receives the call, and they leave 3 to deal with it on his own. We will also start intercutting Smoker and Tashigi's side plot following the Straw Hats into the Grand Line, taking the place of Garp and Koby's side plot from the first series (though we might see Smoker and Tashigi visit Marine Headquarters somewhere in their side plot and we get to see Vincent, Morgan, and Aidan reprising their roles, and showing Koby and Helmeppo's training).
Returning characters will include Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, as well as Buggy and Alvida. Newcomers will include Smoker, Tashigi, Vivi, Nico Robin, Igaram, Mr. 5, and Miss Valentine for sure. Dragon's role is small enough to be awkward but still important. The old man from the tavern might stick around, but it would be fun if Luffy comes across Dragon, doesn't recognize him in the cloak, and hears the story from him. I would prefer to keep the lighthouse keeper that tends the whale, but I could see him being cut if they want to save the whale's story for Brook or something. Either Mr. 9 or Miss Monday could be cut, but I hope they stick around. If Mr. 3 or Miss Goldenweek appear, it is only a cameo. And Mr. 13 and Miss Friday will be cut altogether.
Jolly Roger titles: If not Luffy's again, I would expect a Smoker-based title with a heavy marine focus for the first. The second would include Baroque Works' skull symbol with slight Vivi touches.
EPISODE III and IV: These would take up the entire Drum Island arc. I'm not totally certain where the divide would be between them, but I'm partial to when Nami wakes up and finds Chopper working over her. This I would expect would be when Smoker visits Marine Headquarters and we get to see Garp, Koby, and Helmeppo again.
Newcomer characters would include Chopper, Wapol, Dr. Kureha (as played by Jamie Lee Curtis, obviously), Dr. Hiriluk, and Dalton for certain. Given the trend so far, I could see one of the other of Wapol's minions being cut, but I think we'll see both. We will probably get our first Ace cameo as well.
Jolly Roger titles: Episode 3 would be Wapol's Jolly Roger, with a heavy steel theme to the letters. Episode 4 would be Dr. Hiriluk's cherry blossom Jolly Roger, with Chopper's hat and a few doctor flourishes.
EPISODE V and VI: These two will bring us to Alabasta and take us from Nanohana all the way to Rainbase, with all the desert traversal in-between. The cutoff will likely be as the Strawhats approach Rainbase, allowing for the desert to take up most of Episode Five, and all of the events of Rainbase to fill Episode Six. Ace will also stick around for the entirety of Episode Five, leaving them after Yuba. We will also start intercutting with Koza and his rebels, and King Cobra and his men, getting the backstories there. The sixth episode would end as Crocodile throws Luffy's body into the sand pit.
Newcomer characters will include Portgas D. Ace, Crocodile, Bon Clay, Koza, Toto, and King Cobra for sure. The remaining members of Baroque Works are all up on the chopping block for cuts, but Mr. 1 and Miss Doublefinger are the most likely to be kept. Pell and Chaka are also both in the realm of at least one being cut, and if I were a betting man, I would say Pell would be kept and Chaka would be cut.
Jolly Roger titles: Episode 5's will be the Whitebeard Jolly Roger, with Ace's hat on it and fire everywhere. Episode 6's will be entirely based around Crocodile, with the skull mirroring him, and the colors of his casino making up the letters.
EPISODE VII and VIII: The battle in Alubarna is so meaty, I suspect they will use both episodes for the entirety of it. I'm not sure where the split will be exactly, but I'm sure the move from the castle to the underground temple will take place in Episode Eight.
Hina will likely debut here, but otherwise all major players will have already shown up in the story.
Jolly Roger titles: Episode 7's will be based around the Alabasta royal family, with touches of King Cobra, Vivi, their castle, and their officers. Episode 8's will be based on Nico Robin specifically, with her hat on the skull, and poneglyphs covering everything.
Wanted Posters will include:
Luffy - He will mug with the same expression behind it.
Buggy - It will interrupt him as he's monologuing and will shoo it away in frustration.
Alvida - If they do her makeover, she will grab it and hold it up to point out her new look.
The Giants of Elbaf - Broggy and Dorry will both knock them out of their way as they charge at each other.
Wapol - He will eat it.
Ace - He will be in the middle of eating. He will smirk and brush it away nonchalantly.
Crocodile - His will appear after he mummifies the pirate band, flashing over his face as he steps over their bodies.
Nico Robin - Hers will appear the moment Tashigi identifies her, and she will simply scowl and ignore it.
What do you think? Come back here on release date to tell me if I got it all wrong or not!
As I did for Squid Games and Alice in Borderland, I am going to jot down my thoughts about One Piece Live Action, which turned out to be an overall good watch, even though I was /genuinely/ afraid it would suck.
OPLA had big shoes to fill, as the One Piece IP is quite well known and beloved. In my view, the Netflix show understood where it could bring a unique perspective, which helped the execution greatly. For example, the speed, superhuman movements, and over-the-top expressions of the anime would be a stretch to represent accurately in live action; even with cgi, I struggled to feel the epic nature of the devil fruits or fighting abilities being used to their full effect (the initial fight against Captain Alvida, for example). Instead, I enjoyed when the show leaned into amplifying the setting of the world and emotions of the characters, which was amazing! The grime of Alvida's ship, Luffy's backstory on Dawn island (the young!Luffy casting was spot. on.), watching Usopp try to load a cannon for the first time, the exploration of what Zoro and Nami talk about when they're not keeping the captain out of trouble - in my opinion, these were the moments that shined brightest for the show.
Pacing. If you've sat through 1000+ episodes of the anime as many have and felt the buildup of tension over /years/, the treatment that the show gives some plot points can feel frustratingly brief. Sanji's goodbye at the Baratie was not half as emotional as it was in the anime, and the moments when the crew was supposed to band together (e.g. feet on barrel on the Going Merry) felt less impactful because we hadn't had as much time to be endeared to the Straw Hat Pirates and root for them as a group. (For example, if the show had included Morgan's backstory of cruelty from the anime, his defeat would have felt farrrrrr more satisfying). However, I have to acknowledge that rapid pacing is expected in the live action, because the anime is decades old and OPLA has to condense a lot of material into a reasonable run time; for an eight-plus hour series, it managed to rarely feel slow (though it did happen), and that's a feat.
Characters. Koby was perfect. The right amount of nervous, the right amount of ambitious. Buggy was a revelation. His character is kind of a running joke in the anime, so I was ready to wish him off screen as soon as he appeared, but I loved Ward as Deke in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the genuineness he added to Buggy's CLAP FOR ME OR DIE behavior made the performance not just intense but somehow nuanced. Nami asking (after Sanji's wink) if there was something wrong with his eye. Luffy drinking milk while others ordered beer. The adaptations of Hawkeye and Garp. You can just imagine the work that went into the fishmen makeup- the list goes on. As I mentioned, I think this attention to detail in adapting the appearance and interactions of the characters was probably what the series did best. Of course there were... interesting takes (bright neon hair in a world of muted color, Nami turning from dollar-sign-eyes loving money in the anime to eat-the-rich in the show, Nami keeping the secret of her involvement with Arlong from Nojiko) but these differences I think make OPLA its own production - a TV show with its own lore - and leave room for people to go back and watch the anime and fall even more in love with the characters and their deeper stories there.
Helmeppo. Helmeppo is so much. I love the 'let's all shit on Helmeppo' jokes. More. Moarrrrr of this.
Extras. I appreciated all the extra touches like the title screen of each episode being modeled after the focus character of the episode and the wanted posters being half anime half live action; it made the production feel like it was made by people who cared that the adaptation was done right. I loved hearing hints of We Are in the soundtrack, and the den den mushis were toooo cute. Altogether, good stuff for my one piece brain. It helped me get through the scenes of Go with Garp.
TLDR; The interpretations of the characters and the realistic settings were highlights of OPLA. The Going Merry, Kaya's mansion, Morgan's naval base, the Baratie and Arlong Park were all stunning to see in live action. However, while the fight scenes were well made, they didn't quite compete with the heights set by the anime, and the story is really condensed, leaving some heartfelt moments coming off as shallow or leaving them out of the plot altogether. This can be a struggle if you're looking for the intricate, mysterious, multi-layered world from the anime. But those still traumatized from memories of live action atla (2010) or dbz (2009) can breathe a sigh of relief as we hold out for sustained quality for this adaptation in future seasons: overall, OPLA is worth watching. A great introduction for newcomers to this amazing series and a pretty good adaptation for long time fans as well.
EPISODE 8 - in which Garp's family drama comes with a death toll and a bill for at least million berry in property damage
See episode 7 here
God I hate scenes of involuntary tattoos. Seeing her shackled is horrible enough ty
Luffy has a permanent case of frowny eyebrows this episode
Now we get the villagers! Poor Nami's worst nightmare aka the villagers trying to take up arms and fight Arlong's pirates
I like that Helmeppo and Koby are blatantly just lingering in the back of the room so they can eavesdrop
How did Usopp get all those smoke bombs to go off?
God I love this fight. The teamwork, with Zoro running up a wall (?) to stop someone attacking Luffy, and Sanji watching Zoro's back. Really sets up Sanji and Zoro as Luffy's big hitters
Aaaand Sanji and Zoro are bickering. And it leads them to let Buggy's head go free, so obvs Buggy fucks off and leaves them high and dry. You two share one brain cell, I swear.
Arlong's lecture about fishmen based speciesism vs Luffy, who discovered discrimination existed like two days ago
Don't worry Usopp, we saw your great victory against the fish man. It will never be forgotten.
I did NOT need a close up on Arlong regrowing his broken teeth.
Luffy finally realizes it's time to lean on his strengths - in this case, his talent for wanton property destruction
"all great fighters call out their finishing moves" and "yeah, you're going to fit in just fine"
Nami just bypasses Sanji and like, I get it, but could someone please give the man a hug. Everyone's been so mean to him today
... and there goes the neighborhood. Glad Nami had the hat, bc it would be hard to salvage if the building came down on it
The Marines randomly showing up at the end here makes no sense. What a weird way to end the season. I'm glad we got to see Koby stand up for himself (and Helmeppo standing at his side)
These poor Marines are standing there as it slowly dawns on them that this entire pirate chase has been the vice admirals fucking family drama playing out on the high seas. Men have died for your bullshit, Garp. And then it's all "oh well, I guess I'll let you go be a pirate, Luffy" like nothing happened, bc this is all some kind of test? Which I don't buy at all btw - dude, you weren't testing shit. You wanted to control Luffy and when that didn't work, you came up with a scenario that made it seem like you were in control the whole time.
I don't like Garp. Fuck that guy
This last bit with Koby makes the whole Marine thing worth it tho. Bc he wants to be the one to show Luffy the wanted poster first. Koby looks overcome with love emotions and it's a perfect little bookend to them at the start of the show.
Best reaction to the wanted poster obvs goes to Zeff, bc you know Sanji never managed to get 'employee of the month'
And then the fucking scene with Mihawk and Shanks - what is this?? Mihawk so clearly looks exasperated but then he's willing to stay and drink with Shanks & Co? What ARE you two??
The little cast off ceremony at the very end is so cute tho, with their younger selves saying it with them? Perfect ending is perfect. With just a tiny hint of smoker to get us excited for next season
Anyways, I still love this show. I'm going to go back to watching the anime - maybe I'll post about that, maybe not. Who can say? I just hope everyone had as much fun as I did
