Things I miss the most about Laura/Hellion…
The agency.
It was just frankly… plain fun seeing Laura DESIRE and pursue someone despite lacking the ability to voice that desire…😂🤣
We’re pretty used to seeing Male Desire/The Male Gaze in comic books….that when characters like Starfire, Rogue, or Wonder Woman showcase desire for Dick, Gambit, or Steve…it really stands out because it is unique…
Laura’s relationship with Hellion was more or less ALWAYS written from the point of view of Laura.
It’s why I heavily disagree when people voice that Laura is unable to be in a relationship with a male character; because I never felt like we “lost” Laura’s agency when she was with Hellion, until Liu came around.
Everyone hammers on about “How negative Hellion and X-23” were (I’ve seen CBR after CBR referencing Julian as the “Toxic Ex”…); when truthfully Hellion WAS her healthiest relationship narratively. He wasn’t toxic until LIU decided to make him toxic.
In comparison, even in-story, Angel and Synch FELT FORCED.
It didn’t focus on Laura’s attraction to them at all…but on the male character. Laura is more or less something to “win”; it’s more focused on the male characters CONVINCING Laura to be with them and how the relationship affects THEM…then it’s ever about Laura’s personal desires. Their relationship feels more or less like a “chore”…it’s never really clear HOW Laura feels on panel.
How Marvel went from iconic pairings such as “Gambit/Rogue”…”Destiny/Mystique”… “Cyclops/Jean”…. to the current POORLY developed relationships we are getting now…I don’t know.
I really wish some writer would bring back Julian/Laura, in part because Laura’s current romantic relationships JUST AREN’T fun anymore. They’re NOT fun to read. They don’t FEEL positive. It’s never about two people mutual desiring…it’s just Laura more or less being a “prop”.
Even with the case of Talon being “better written” than Duggan’s Wolverine-Laura; it’s hard to care about the character at all because ALL of her interactions are literally about BEING WITH SYNCH and written in a way TO FOCUS SOLELY on SYNCH.

Round 4 Match 3!
[ID1: A picture of Laura Kinney, a white woman with long brown-black hair. She is wearing her first Wolverine costume, which is very similar to Logan’s first Wolverine costume. Two claws protrude from the knuckles of each hand.
ID2: A picture of Julian Keller, a white man with black hair. He wears a red version of the usual X-Men uniform, and stands with his arms crossed and his hip cocked. His hands are floating metal prosthetics. end ID.]

I was roleplaying earlier and answering questions about the sniktfam super senses and I just came to a realization that’s probably my new headcanon for Laura’s relationship history.
So it’s canon that Laura Kinney can smell emotions via chemical releases in the body, and she can hear heartbeats and breathing patterns, much like Matt Murdock can with his heightened senses. I’ve always wondered why Laura became fascinated with Hellion and I’ve sort of handwaved it for years now as just something I couldn’t understand personally about her canonical attraction
But it’s there. She can smell when people are attracted to her. She can tell when people are aroused by her. Daken can do it, and while yes he has nebulous pheromone powers, the bodily processes could still be picked up by those with heightened senses. Back in the Academy X/New X-Men days, Laura still viewed herself as an object and weapon to be used, and that didn’t begin to change until her solo when she’d left the school.
I think Laura could just tell Julian was attracted to her and in her mind, especially after her history with Zebra Daddy in NYX (that terrible comic), I feel like Laura felt she needed to be “used” as an object, hence the fascination, since Julian was into her and desired her.
This is depressing and kinda bleak and any Hellion stans out there are gonna hate this take I’m sure but this does satisfy the part of me that reads Julian and Warren’s relationships with Laura as comphet behavior. And it fits with where her headspace was at at that point in time canonically.

Honestly- if Erica Schultz manages to give Hellion/X-23 the same closure in “Deadly Regenesis”, that Conner/Cassie got… I will be more than happy and satisfied!

I find myself hoping it was a colorist error.
This is something for the disabled community to weigh in on, but personally I dislike the idea of healing Julian’s hands (and with so little ceremony). I would, at minimum, really appreciate a conversation between Josh and Julian about it? Because it is a major decision, to erase something that happened to your body, something you have presumably lived with and coped with and tried to accept for years now.
How Hellion adapted to his loss and using prosthetics, and what it meant to be more visibly a mutant, are topics we’ve been waiting to see covered ever since he was first disabled. To have it just undone? Off page?? I guess I wouldn’t be surprised, god knows Marvel has negative interest in exploring Hellion’s arc, let alone acknowledging his PTSD.
I had the same bad taste in my mouth when DC magically gave Oracle her legs back all those years ago. Obviously if a disabled person wants to change their body that’s their prerogative and there is no right or wrong answer, but these stories are predominantly conceived and written by able-bodied people. It reads very ableist that the implication is always “of COURSE they want to be fixed! Why would anyone accept any less??” and I Do Not Like It, my friends
