Steam 2-8-2 SY #1676 in Baotou, China, 2008 by Ben Kletzer
The spectacular slag dump at Baotou steelworks as seen with SY #1676. At one time, Baotou had dozens of steam locomotives in daily service, but by this point in 2008 only seven SY 2-8-2's remained. Already most of these steam locomotives were idle every day, while a massive fleet of new diesels served the steelworks. The once bustling steam shop was already barren of equipment and awaiting demolition. But all of this could be forgotten while watching a SY struggle with 1200 tons of molten steel on the slag tip. Within a six months, the steel mill would be fully dieselized and SY 1676 would be nothing more than razor blades.

Steel being an Alloy of Iron with carbon generally requires the carbon to be fairly uniform to improve ductility, and thus the fresh cast iron which has carbon distributed unevenly throughout it, in order to fix this you must work the iron to turn into steel, if it is lightly worked by hand like say a hammer an anvil you get wrought iron but to get your good modern steel you need to roll it with big ass rollers which can be done both hot or cold

The so-called “N-Stamp”, the certification that your organization, processes, and people are equal to the task of achieving the extreme quality requirements demanded for products to be used in civil nuclear energy contexts, is difficult and costly to acquire and maintain. British industry gave up on it ― because they had no new orders. Now they’re getting that capability back.
You can’t “suspend” an industry for years and then start it back up. If you try, you’re liable to find that it’s almost as difficult as building that industry was in the first place. When the French government agreed in the 1990s to a “pause” in ordering new nuclear power plants, they set up the delays and cost over-runs which have plagued the EPR projects at Flamanville, Olkiluoto, and Hinkley Point. Need we add that this is exactly why the anti-nuclear campaigners demanded it?
