It's that time of year again, y'all! We're gearing up for the Heavy Artillery Holiday Exchange 2023. If you've never participated before, I encourage you to check out the info post, which you can find linked at the top of our Tumblr page or read over on Dreamwidth.

Here's the projected schedule:

November 5, 2023: Tag set nominations open. November 10, 2023: Tag set nominations close. November 11, 2023: Sign-ups open at 8AM Eastern Time (UTC-4). (Link will be provided in a separate post on November 11th.) November 18, 2023: Sign-ups close at midnight Eastern Time (UTC-4). November 20, 2023: Assignments go out. (The extra day is to make sure we have time to adjust if anyone comes up as unmatchable.) December 1-3, 2023: Check in #1/writing weekend. December 15-17, 2023: Check in #2/writing weekend; default deadline. December 22, 2023: Fic due by 8PM Eastern Time (UTC-4). December 24, 2023: Collection goes live. December 27, 2023: Author reveals.

P.S. Very interesting photo: It seems that the Ukrainian artillerymen will NEVER run out of 203mm artillery shells...If Ukraine unfortunately still does not have F-16s and modern aviation ammunition, then the 203mm guns will be very useful to break through the defense lines of the Russian Orc army

Remember the Battle of Sedan: May 1940.

When Britain and France declared war on Germany following the Nazi invasion of Poland, many expected that war to be a retread of the infantry tactics of WWI.

That line of thinking clearly led to the French strategy of constructing the heavy concrete fortifications of the Maginot Line. Those expectations where shattered in May 1940, when the Germans launched a fast-paced “Blitzkreig” (“lightning war”) spearheaded by Panzer tanks. Lacking heavy artillery, the Germans attacked French positions at Sedan with massed Stuka dive bombers. The intense air assault quickly demoralized the defenders and the German forces easily broke through. France fell soon afterwards.

This likely shows members of the Ningpo or Ningbo Force, founded as a section of the famed Ever-Victorious Army in May 1862 to garrison Ningbo after its recapture from the Taipings. It was known also as the ‘Ever-Pacifying Army’ and also colloquially called the ‘Green Caps’ (in Chinese Lu-t’ou yung, or green turbaned braves). Officered by British soldiers, the force was made up of six infantry companies and a large artillery company. The Ningbo Force fought until 1864, when most of it was disbanded after the Taipings were defeated. However, some elements of the artillery were retained as a city guard. Thomson photographed them in 1872, though the notes from the archives misidentify the city as Nanjing.

Hi, could you guys please update the Heavy Artillery Holiday Exchange information pages with up-to-date information, or at least send a new email?

I heard rumours that there's been a delay, but I can't find any information on this from the blog/dreamwidth/ao3-profile so I can't confirm this except by relying on word of mouth.

If the discord is the only reliable way to get up to date information on the event then I really think you've should made that clearer. In the sign-up I was led to believe joining it was optional and only if you wanted to socialize :(

The Ukrainian Army is using heavy artillery and drones to try and take control of the Svatove-Kreminna highway inside Ukraine's Luhansk region. Ukrainian artillerists spoke to RFE/RL just across the border in the Kharkiv region about their efforts to break through enemy lines.
