They're celebrities. People are going to find celebrities attractive, especially if these are people they see on screens and billboards every day. If you pick up the nearest magazine you find you're probably going to find Junko Enoshima in it. And maybe you should consider that those "weirdos" who are walking up to Hajime are simply fans that want to greet him. We've watched these people fight through hell, cry, laugh, and find hope along the way. Of course we are going to get attached to them, especially to those of us who have been keeping up with them for a long time now. You guys want complex characters but you couldn't even understand Kyoko Kirigiri - Kyoko defending post.

So today I'm gonna talk about Kyoko framing Makoto because you guys only foucs on Makoto in here which drives me insane.

Yes, it was unfair that Makoto got framed. But don't forget that Kyoko was getting framed too, it's not like Kyoko framed Makoto for a murder she committed. The dead body belonged to Mukuro who died chapters ago.

Of course, Kyoko could have pulled out an inspirational speech and sacrifice herself for Naegi but there was no place for that bullshit.

Haven't you seen the bad ending? If Kyoko dies, they never get out of the killing game, the tradegy goes on forever and they don't even know.

And Kyoko knows that. Kyoko knows she's the only person who can end the killing game with all the information and evidence she got. As much as, some of these were in her room, that still wouldn't be enough for others. Plus they would probably have no reason to go there after she dies, I also wouldn't be surprised if Junko got rid of the evidence in Kyoko's room after she died.

The whole reason why the trail was in the first place was because Junko wanted to stop Kyoko from destroying her killing game. Kyoko knows that.

Now, Kyoko finds herself in a situation where she's about to get executed and the "if you vote the wrong person then you all die" rule is not going to help her anymore since the whole thing is rigged and she's being framed by the mastermind. She knows that if she dies the killing game will never and go on forever AND SHE'S RIGHT. She's nervous, she's scared, she's in a point of no escape.

She has to choices:

1. Die and lnever defeat the mastermind and have everyone locked in there forever, mastermind wins, all the deaths meant nothing.

2. Frame someone else, live and defeat the mastermind and then avenge the deaths of everyone including the person who got framed.

There's no place for sacrifice bullshit here.

Kyoko choses to save herself, not because she's selfish or arrogant but because she believes in her abilities and the knowledge she has.

Makoto ends up being the person who gets executed instead and that's s pretty much a random thing because it really could have been anyone. Yes, she feels guilty and yes, she knows it's unfair. But it was the only thing to do so she can end the killing game.

Makoto survives and she goes to look for him and saves him and she does it pretty quickly. She goes there, brings him food and water, then helps him get back to the building. If she didn't care about him, she wouldn't think about what happened to him.

The fact that she was the only one to do so, maybe because she detailed map of the school that she got from some secret room, however the fact that she threw herself down the trash to save Makoto shows that she cares. But I think it's safe to say that if she didn't go down there, there's a huge chance that no one would.

In conclusion, chapter 5 is not all about Makoto. I hate when people make it all about him and how it was unfair for him and JUST for him. Because if you think about it, it wasn't fair for anyone and Kyoko had no choice, just like everyone else. They couldn't just not vote, they had to vote for someone.

Kyoko is an interesting character because like I mentioned before, what you'd except from a Danganronpa female support character would be inspirational sacrifice to let the protagonist solve everything by themselves and "I believe in you" and blah blah.

That scenario just doesn't work here because Makoto alone doesn't have enough information and knowledge to defeat the mastermind by himself.

Another thing is that Kyoko apologies and explains everything as soon as she sees Makoto.

Makoto forgives her not because he is a loser people pleaser although he is but not here but because he knows Kyoko and trusts her and he knows that she has those information that could help save the killing game, he knows that without her they wouldn't defeat the mastermind.

Kyoko Kirigiri is a character with her own morals, brain, way of thinking and mind. She is a deep powerful character who was one of the main reasons Junko was defeated. Yet, she gets very little credit. This would bring us to talking about the anime but that's a topic for another day and another rant.

He also constantly wants the protagonist to tell the rest what he knows

This rich mf… He spends the entire game being a snobby, condescending, uncaring asshole. He becomes relatively nicer by the end but never stops being a dick. He also desecrated a corpse once for funsies. He’s also stupid but he doesn’t know that. I both like and hate him. It’s complicated.

He's an heir to a wealthy family corporation and he sure does act the part. He acts like he's better than everyone else and thinks they're not worth his time. He's just a huge asshole. (SPOILERS) He tampers with a murder scene just for fun and outs another student's secret alter, knowing full well it was irrelevant to the case. He also has a small breakdown about being wrong in another trial. By the end, he becomes a bit more likeable and kinda a tsundere that pretends like he doesn't care about the other survivors (but he totally does). Still very much an asshole though. He's a fucked up lil guy and something about him draws me to him. I would kick his rich bastard shins IRL given the chance, however.

He is emotionally detached from his classmates…

for me it’s

it’s how Naegi Makoto is an average boy, in spite of it all. It’s how Makoto describes himself as an optimist (not even that, just a bit more optimistic than everyone else) and then will refuse to lose a single person to the killing game, even if he has to carry all the dead to the end himself. It’s how he’s genuinely become so aware of himself after the game but he still cannot stop himself from trying to find and bring out the good in people, whenever it exists, even as he knows he can’t always afford that.

it’s how Akamatsu Kaede is an average girl, in spite of it all. She doesn’t feel quite Ultimate enough, how she describes herself as a “piano freak” who just happened to win all those contests. It’s how she feels her passion isn’t enough and finds satisfaction through concrete accomplishment, be it the mastermind dead on the floor or the smiles on her audience (her classmates’ faces). It’s how she’s so aware of the disparity between the image she projects and the real her, how she will keep the class morale high and then go cry in her room. It’s how she describes the killing game as “ridiculous”, and will smile even as she cries.

It’s how “Maeda Yuki” could’ve been real. So easily he could’ve been real. It’s how he’s kind of surprised that anyone finds him reliable at all, how he holds himself to the same standard Akane holds him to and at the same time is so endlessly tempted to give in, it’s how he is our POV character but he is the villain of our story. Its how without Yuki and the impact he made on Akane, on Tsurugi, on Rei, on Teruya, Mikako even… they wouldn’t have broken so hard, knowing the hope that they represent is just a shred of despair.

Summary: some days are slow.

Some days are slow.

Slow.

slow.

It's been slow since you left. It's hard to wake up some days, other days, he stays in bed, dialing Naegi, apologizing through his morning voice and sniffling nose about not being able to make it to work again. It's hard to wake up in the house when you're gone. It's a strange experience, really.

Two months ago, you would make him breakfast in the morning.

Now, you do nothing.

Well, not like you can do anything to begin with.

You've been gone for just about that long too.

It was his fault (again), you know (as it always is).

He had been the one to love you too hard, and he had been the one to throw you into a pool of sharks, except these sharks had nukes and bombs and snipers and... well, you know. The good old arsenal of weapons that a typical war criminal has. Ah, no. Not one. Multiple.

He had been the target of everyone, and he supposes that they caught onto the fact that he valued your life more than his own. It was obvious when he had tucked you away from the rest of the world in your apartment that the Future Foundation owned. He'd rather die than live in a world without you.

He supposes his worst nightmare has come true.

He lives in a world without you now.

Without.

Yeah, without you.

So, he lives another day, one where he's not allowed to kill himself as you had instructed. (You had told him pretty explicitly once, "No killing yourself. If I see you in hell I'm sending you straight back to Earth.") He calls off work again, sitting in your bedroom, lying in your bedroom, holding the covers to his chest, mind spinning, trying his best to savor whatever smell of you was left. (most of it has faded, but he likes to pretend.)

There's some breakfast you had made for him before you passed in the fridge. It's molding, turning green, purple, he doesn't know what color, but it's not good to eat anymore, yet he keeps it in there. Grief is a nightmare for him this time around. He hadn't even cried this hard since his parents' death. He hadn't even cried when he got kidnapped. He never slowed down for anything. Grief was almost a normal part of his life. (it wasn't. He never cried over deaths.)

It's another day that he lays in bed until his stomach curls in his abdomen, crying, begging for him to eat something. Something. Anything. He's hungry. He's going to die without the food. So, he pops a couple of nutrition pills and goes back to bed, and the cycle repeats.

Again.

And again.

Komaeda finds himself in a dooming cycle. A cycle that eats his insides out, losing his muscle, his face slimming and turning bonier than when he was doing chemo. He thinks he deserves it for killing the love of his life. The. The ex-love of his life. No. That's not right. He still adores you. He'd kill himself to be with you right now if he could. Yet, he doesn't know why your last words stick with him so strongly. They weren't even your last words, (your last words had been "Fuck, there goes my vision" according to Hinata) but Komaeda doesn't understand why he listens to you. Maybe he was worried he'd be an even bigger disappointment to you if he actually did kill himself to follow you. Maybe you were happier and found someone else.

You had mentioned you had a dead first love in the afterlife (it had been a joke. he didn't know).

Komaeda doesn't like that thought. You told him you loved him.

You loved him.

loved.

Maybe it was scarier on his end. Maybe it had been a mistake on his end to think that he could love someone. It was foolish, scary, stupid, everything in between. He was delusional to think that you would be able to grow old with him. It's. It's just a stupid cycle of grief that he was incapable of escaping. How terrible on his end. You'd surely smack him if you were still alive.

Maybe you are smacking him as a ghost. Maybe he'd be able to feel you at least one last time that way.

He didn't even get to say goodbye.

You had bled out in the arms of another man, and when he found you, you were cold, dead, lifeless, everything in between, but most of all, you were dead. Your skin was colder than the winters he survived out on the streets as a remnant. His heart hurt. (at least it didn't hurt when he was a remnant). Maybe this was Junko's way of getting him back. It was too good to be true, after all. How dare he believe that he could—

It's hard to stop the thought cycle.

Komaeda sits on the couch, hugging your stuffed animal, opening the TV to catch up with the news (more so to turn it into white noise), ignoring the text messages from his classmates again. How would they know? They all lost their loved ones during the tragedy with the blame of despair. He lost you during a time when he was sober. He lost you when he was capable of protecting you. How could he do that to himself? How could he do that to you? It would have been better to let you leave and fall for someone else. How dare he believe that he could be happy?

He would never be happy without you.

It was as if all the healing you had done had cracked and broken on its own. It didn't really matter anymore. You were dead, and your healing had undone itself. As though the thread after his surgery had broken loose, forcing his wound open again. He was so close too. Maybe if you had stayed a little longer— what a futile thought. You're gone. It doesn't matter anymore.

He blinks back into consciousness, staring at Naegi delivering the news, staring at the vitamin pills on the table. The pills you used to take. Ah. Ugh. Why must everything in this dammed apartment remind him of you? No. Not dammed. Why must he have had lost you?

He falls asleep on the couch, the TV eventually playing music from the ultimate composer, throwing him into a trance. He's tired. He's asleep, but he's walking. He's. He doesn't know. He's dead, dying, died, broken. He's. Broken? He doesn't know. Not anymore.

So, as he falls back asleep in his bed, he wonders if the next day he'll break out of the trance.

Maybe not.

Maybe so.

But then again, some days are slow.

Reading Makoto Naegi’s Secret File again, there’s one thing about it that I disagree. It says at the end that Makoto getting the HPA invite is zenith of his bad luck because of the despair inducing killing game. But if Makoto didn’t get enrolled to Hope’s Peak than he and Komaru would be dead or in hiding. Junko will still be alive and the killing game will succeed to plunge the world into unfixable despair. Frankly, Makoto and the entire world are very lucky that he was enrolled because only he could have stopped the killing game.

Oh yes, I can completely see your point! However, I can think of reasons why Kodaka included that part about the HPA invitation being a stroke of very, very bad luck, instead.

Perhaps Kodaka wanted to end this little story impactfully by instilling a sense of dread in the back of his reader's minds.

In the story, Makoto experiences a whole day of misfortune from losing a simple game of rock-paper-scissors to getting into a hostage situation.

But by the end, all these unlucky incidents get resolved with the robber arrested and Makoto getting an acceptance letter from a prestigious academy.

Now, remember that throughout most of this story, you're in Makoto's point of view.

After everything he had gone through that day, when he recieves the letter, he gets happy. He sees that letter as a gift for making it through. He says it here - an undeniable reversal of his unluckiness.

But then, the narrator voice pops up - "Ah, but do you really think that's all? Do you really think this is the end of Makoto's unluckiness? Well, this poor bastard doesn't know what's coming!" - with these lines:

Personally, I believe this immediate switch of POVs (Makoto and the narrator) in the end makes for a greater impact - a haunting conclusion to the story. Especially with these lines:

So, I believe the mention of the acceptance letter being a stroke of bad luck here is fitting!

Then there's another question that dwells on my mind.

Who can actually decide if Makoto's receival of HPA's acceptance letter is lucky or unlucky?

Let's imagine you ask Makoto himself whether he feels lucky or unlucky about his acception now.

Lucky? Because ultimately, he stops the killing game, saves his remaining friends from falling into despair, dismantles Ultimate Despair (since it's mentioned that majority of its members committed suicide after Junko's death), and is hailed as a hero and 'Ultimate Hope' by the world. Many, many people gaze upon him with starry eyes.

Unlucky? Because, eventhough he escapes the killing game with his survivor friends, that trauma and immense guilt lingers on. He has lost several of his friends. He has to bear the guilt of sentencing his classmates to death, lest they all get killed. He has inadvertently caused Komaru's imprisonment (for his motive) and his parents are missing, presumably even dead. He has to face a mountain load of burden that comes with being an 'Ultimate Hope' to people in a despair-ridden world.

The damage has already been done, no matter how good things turn out to be in the end.

Maybe in the eyes of the world, they see Makoto's acceptance into HPA as lucky.

But how does Makoto personally see it?

Maybe lucky. He has ended up saving the world, gaining inseperable friends, and earning great respect.

Maybe unlucky. He has to go through the most painful moments in his life, developing trauma and guilt that might follow him until his death.

Or maybe, he sees it as just is - neither lucky or unlucky. It just . . . happened. It's all just how things are. It's all just how things turn out to be.

Like life itself, you see? Many things happen out of your control - good things and bad things. Life is neutral like that. Maybe you can accept that aspect of life and keep moving forward, striving for change in the future - just like Makoto!

Decided to just post the remaining ones here in just one batch because I need to throw the ideas somewhere and I do not have the patience I would like to imagine I have, especially not with stuff I want to talk about.

Be warned! Some spoilers for DR1, read at your own discretion.

First Group - The Deserved Better Gang

Yasuhiro Hagakure - Ultimate Idol

This man can fit so many conspiracies in his head.

Him and Mondo know each other in a daily basis because of some reasons I'll say later, you can imagine how his dead impacted the other.

She didn't kill Hiro because she wanted, Hina was the original target for the letter so she went to confront him about it.

Aoi Asahina - Ultimate Programmer

I had to look up so many Y2K fashion girl I'm so sorry that this means you died 3rd.

Alter Ego takes mostly the form of her brother and she created both to help and cope with everything.

Her death happens because her and Makoto have heard of each other through her brother, he didn't mean to kill her he swears! Still happens, I hug her.

Second Group - Trouble Trio

Kyoko Kirigiri - Ultimate Gambler

She went to live with her dad when she was little but the deduction talent runs through her blood, she is type of player that counts card and doesn't get caught.

Eventually reconnected with her grandfather and flips her dad off a lot.

Case 3 was not for the money, it was a revenge thingy.

Makoto Naegi - Ultimate Biker Gang Leader

Still a sweethear! Just a good boy that could kick you in your knees and send you to the hospital

Started the gang more of a personal thing but then it got out of control and he doesn't know what will happen if he decides to leave (Especially since the Crazy Diamonds guys left so some of the members moved to his gang).

Sister is his second in command

Expected to get caught in Trial 2, then the whole meddling with the crime scene happened and he doesn't know how to feel about it.

Byakuya Togami - Ultimate Fanfic Creator

That type of nerd that corrects you even if you get a tiny detail wrong because "How dare you get this wrong even if you are just starting to learn about this piece of media? You are unworthy of calling yourself a true fan!".

The main 6's emotional support through everything, elder sister tired energy.

Her and Junko didn't get separated at teens but they are friends, she really cared about her sister and loves her very much.

*Yukari elbows Makoto in the ribs, which is enough to get him to back off. He drops the butterfly knife, and it falls down a vent into the factory deep below.

okay im posting my drdt connected to v3 theory now

and because it has spoilers for sure ill just spam image to make the cut thing cuz idk how (im stupid)

i think thats good uh

so basic theory, that in some way, everything is fictional. connected to the v3 lore. i dont really think i need to explain much? so heres where the theory starts

the someone being related to a canon character is kinda just something i thought was a sorta interesting idea, and i dont really believe it. theres not many connections i can make. levi has the same eye color as junko and the fashion talent and the hair kinda matches makoto or healthy nagito (though i think thats a fanon thing anyways) but since junko is dead and nagito is unlikely to have kids, those are a stretch. makoto could still work i guess? but again, unlikely.

and of course theres obviously this

if theres anything that could work for this theory i made for no reason its this, clearly david and shuichi look very similar. and if v3 is correct and the v3 cast would be the only non fictional ones, i guess david and shuichi having some family relation would be the only thing to make sense. but again, this is like a side bonus theory just for fun so i wouldnt think about it too much.

anyways and heres where i really start v3 theory

thats the basic logic of this theory. monotv lying about the tragedy, the false memories, reboot or just like a spin off in america, something like that

if these comments meant anything this could easily be like.. something with v3 and fiction. interestingly, the comments have dates that are back a while. 10 years, 4 years, stuff like that. i would say that either the comments are old and danganronpa is older and v3 wasnt the last and its been going on for a while, or the person who made this just didnt care about the years of the comments..?

if they do relate to drdt, the blanks for the "is the byakuya/nagito/kokichi" do easily fit to david.. that's prolly about him.

the lyrics are also interesting i think. the world wont change. the world wont give up danganronpa, the killing game wont stop. maybe.

bit hard to read, but on the top there's 5 letters will obviously die in chapter 5. if the spaces mean anything, theres another thing for david.

i like that blank is a protag who also plays the antag? theres a lot of spaces there. too many for me to really say who it could be. similarly, theres blank and blank totally swapped places.

this has to do somehow with teruko and david. theres the thing about david was supposed to be the real protag

this is interesting. i did have an idea about this. that maybe this was supposed to be the main cast but drdt is somehow off script, maybe teruko was supposed to die when stabbed by xander, maybe teruko was never meant to be stabbed by xander, i dont know. the important thing is whats under mai's name. it looks like mr. naegi to me. this again can be connected to v3 where the cast got false memories of makoto being the headmaster of hope's peak. mr naegi.

theres a bit more where it says i have always been a only child. the blanks are most surely diana chiem. it also fits david but thats prolly nothing.

what could this mean? well, think of v3. people had memories of their friends and family. but they didnt exist. they were just false memories.

there is no one named diana chiem. she's just fictional.

thats my take on that anyways.

i dont really have too much else. but back to teruko maybe supposed to die, it would be even more like v3. the girl protag being killed of, maybe to be replaced by a depressed blue haired guy?

I find it interesting that people blame Makoto for Junko's death.

I get why because he's the one who defeated her. He's the one who won the final trial, learned the truth and beat her at her own game.

He's Ultimate Hope and she's Ultimate Despair.

However, Junko's death is not Makoto's fault. She's the one who pressed the big red button and had all of this set up.

If anything Makoto was trying to prevent her death.

But of course her followers can't blame her so they pick him.

Man... I'm like barely a minute in and I'm on a rant.

Monaca in a dictator outfit while a bunch of Monokuma's at a bar.

Not a visual I expected.

Well Monaca is definitely embodying Junko, doing a lot of her mannerisms and such.

I do find it ironic that Junko's death gives people such despair, it's what she would have wanted.

And Monaca made herself the heir to Junko rather than Komaru.

Junko Enoshima the 2nd aka Monaca Towa doesn't really roll off the tongue, maybe workshop that.

Ayyy Nagisa!

Okay okay the Warriors of Hope are in on this too and know where Monaca is.

And Genocider Sho is here. I love how Komaru has befriended both Toko and Sho.

Hmm maybe let's not tell Komaru that Makoto was about to either be locked up for an eternity, or if Munakata had his way, executed.

I feel so bad for real Byakuya who is somehow aware of all of this... Poor guy.

It's cool seeing Byakuya's inner monologue. It's no hangman's gambit but it's interesting to see him think stuff over.

And it is suspicious that the killing game isn't being broadcasted, shows they've got something to hide.

I love how Byakuya isn't even that far up in the Future Foundation but takes control abd everyone's just like yeah sure why not.

Nevermind I see why, he was the ultimate affluent progeny, dude was quite literally born to lead.

And it's nice to see it, especially seeing how he's changed and doing this to help his friends.

Like, I get it we don't have much time but don't rip the plaster off that hard.

Byakuya's attitude of that's complete bullshit, is my thoughts exactly.

Hi hi hi welcome to my in depth analysis of Naegamigiri cuddles this is your life now sit down

Aight we’re peeling this cuddle pile like an onion

Togami - after the disaster that was trial 5 of dr1, Togami really likes being the big spoon. You’ll never get him to admit it but he gets nightmares about trial 5 or trial 6 not ending as well as they did (and trial 5 was already a shit show let’s be honest) from Junko killing Naegi and trapping them all in Hopes Peak forever, to Kirigiri and Naegi both being executed in trial 5, to Naegi’s execution going successfully and Kirigiri disappearing shortly after and never returning. He cares a lot about his partners and would never forgive himself if something happened to them. That being said, he finds a lot of comfort in being able to hold them both, he wants to protect them from the world. Waking up from a nightmare in the middle of the night and finding them both sound asleep in his arms helps soothe his anxieties and calm his fears.

Naegi - Middle seat of the short king. Naegi is a sucker for physical affection so being in the middle is an absolute win for him. A lot of the time it can end with both Togami and Kirigiri on top of him, which can be a bit of a problem, but he doesn’t mind. You know that feeling you get where you suddenly feel like you’re falling when you’re actually just sleeping? Naegi gets that a lot but worse. His execution was pretty traumatic and the feeling of falling still really gets to him. He wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat a ton because oh god he was falling again. The lack of movement and sense of security from being sandwiched between his partners helps him feel comfy and safe, and he sometimes wakes up to find another little guy curled up on top of or next to him, which always makes it feel even sweeter.

Kirigiri - little spoon for the lovely lady. To kinda simplify it, she moves around a TON in her sleep, so she likes having the space to move around. She either ends up holding Naegi while he holds her or she ends up splayed across Naegi and Togami. Just like the others, she also gets a ton of nightmares regarding the killing game. From being executed instead of Naegi and not having his life saving luck, to not being quick enough to save Naegi and finding him dead at the bottom of the trash chute. When she has a bad night, she prefers to get up and walk around, get her blood moving so she feels less vulnerable. Naegi will sometimes wake up when she does and join her. She’s run into Shuichi a couple of times as well, which has led to a couple late night 7-Eleven runs when neither can sleep.

I don't hate the boy, in fact quite the opposite; in many ways I look up to him.

His never-waving optimism, his ability to forge close bonds with those around him, his beliefs and strong hope are admirable traits that any person in the Future Foundation should strive for. Myself included.

But Makoto Naegi is just that, a boy. He knows not the ways of the world nor its harsh reality. And as such, it's my responsibility as the adult to guide him down the right path. But he is also far too stubborn and naive to realize that. I truly do want to save him from that mentality...

To that end, if that means we should clash over the course of this game, then so be it...! Anything to open his eyes so that he may see clear!

I did actually have an idea for what could be a catalyst for Protag!Nagito changing his mind; Sakura. Just as her main self's determination managed to pretty much stop Class 78 actively participating in the Killing Game, what if some of Despair!Sakura's original self managed to pierce the brainwashing through sheer willpower? Not fully able to stop the compulsions Junko implanted into her, but she does become a kind of mole among the Remnants for the Class 77 survivors. Protag!Nagito realizing that if there old selves aren't completely gone, maybe the simulation idea that Gekkogahara proposed before getting shot down might not be a pipedream after all. Up until this point I picture him as being kind of a "Anti-Hero Replacement" for main Makoto. He does undergo some positive character growth and forge stronger bonds with his classmates in their Killing Game. And he does become a somewhat inspiring figure in a way the mastermind didn't intend. But it's more like the audience found his plucky determination and never-give-up attitude weirdly endearing than him being an "Ultimate Hope". And after they team up with the Future Foundation, he's a little too onboard with Munakata's brand of fighting despair. But rehabilitating the Remnants could well be the point where him and the Class 77 survivors actually do better than the Class 78 survivors in canon. Like for example, maybe Sonia decides on the location of the NWP being a secure remote area of Novoselic instead of Jabberwock Island (her homeland still being a holdout in this timeline). And insists that they fake the Remnants' death in some kind of bombing. All to ensure that the Foundation doesn't interfere with the program. And Protag!Nagito's more flawed characteristics compared to Makoto could actually become an advantage here. Like he might have an easier time relating to the Remnants post-deprogramming, with some of them feeling like they don't deserve a second chance. Plus I could actually see him clashing with Gekkogahara and insisting she come up with a method that doesn't involve amnesia. Because on top of it feeling kind of offensive after his experiences in their Killing Game and his struggles with dementia, he's just thinking "How do you think they're going to feel when they wake up from a comfy European holiday and find most of their family and friends are dead, the world is a mess, and they're the cause?!" Hell, if the Monokuma virus does happen in his timeline (not sure if Hajime/Izuru would be present or not), maybe he just drops all the bullshit. Leading the others to some hidden dev room with Usami and laying out where they really are and why they're here. Could well be one of the few Killing Games in the multiverse that ends with no murders. He let Makoto Naegi down, but goddammit him and the other survivors aren't gonna let the rest of their Kouhais down this time.

I like the idea of Nagito preferring to have them remember well—their sins basically—as a call back his own personal experience with dementia because yeah, that was always such a weird feature for the program to begin with. It’s remarkably harder to get closure from an experience you don’t even remember anymore but still visibly and emotionally have to deal with the effects of. How do you even begin to approach that? This doesn’t even touch upon the fact that you’ve basically been age regressed to a teenager again and suddenly find yourself in an adult body that’s been mutilated in so many ways. I’ve always wondered how exactly the SDR1 crew were going to approach class 77 in the event of an actual successful program—no virus detected. I also found it amusing that Makoto seemed the most skeptical of the survivors to use the program as is considering he was the one who implemented the failsafe in the event something went south (which it did of course). Makes me think that Makoto would have preferred the program worked differently and, if given the time, would have made it be a much more different experience for the remnants rather than the whole Hope Fragment school field trip concept. I’d like to see Makoto’s version of the Neo World Program now haha. Ah, the DR lore really is somethin’—oodles of fun to consider all the possible aus that could have happened with just one simple change.

Attempt

More Ghost AU, this time Chapter 2, with arguing, Makoto try to initiate a FTE with Utsuro, and sauna battles.

When he woke up, the first thing he heard was a message from Monokuma telling them how the new rule against loaning their e-Handbooks to each other had been added.

But, right now, he wasn't worried about that.

He just wanted to take something for breakfast, he still felt a bit tired from his dreamless sleep and he hoped that eating something would slap that sleep away.

But, when he arrived to the dining room, Kiyotaka and Byakuya still hadn't arrived.

Probably, Kiyotaka was trying to get the Influential Progeny out of his room, knowing how he liked to be the last one to arrive to the dining room.

The wait for the two guys was a calm one, only being interrupted by Celestia ordening Hifumi to make her some milk tea, only to get scarily furious when he made the beverage in a way she didn't like it.

That explosion of furious emotion from her bewildered everyone, including his ghost companion, never having expected that she could get that angry, only having seen her as a calm kind of ruthless before that.

With that, he was sure that, from now, he would make sure to never become enemies with her.

Their wait finally ended when Kiyotaka arrived at the room, telling them that he couldn't find Byakuya on his room. Everyone then decided to search the building for him, not wanting to repeat with him what happened to Sayaka.

Thankfully, he was able to find him in the library, reading a book.

Unfortunately, he was there just to find inspiration for the day he decided to 'play' this degenerated 'game' and, even with everyone else arguing against his way of thinking, no one was able to convince him to stop his callous 'Survival of the Fittest' mentality and start working alongside them.

The Affluent Progeny's mind was just an antithesis for the rest of them, being the only one who wanted to 'participate' in the killing game.

After the breakfast meeting was cut short in such a dour mood, he tried to spend some time with the others, but, by the evening, he just threw himself onto his bed, more tired than ever.

"Byakuya Togami is just one of those 'cut-from-the-same-mold'-kind of rich person, only interested in their own self-benefit, and the killing game is just the perfect way to indulge in his own desires. No matter how hard you try, you'll never be able to convince him to work alongside you against the mastermind"

Utsuro was now floating right over him. He hated to admit it, but he was right about Byakuya.

The Ultimate Heir was only interested in himself, ready to let them all die if it meant 'winning' the killing game, and not showing even a shred of sympathy for their suffering.

But, at the same time, they needed to band together to be able to escape this place before someone else ends up dead.

He had to find a way to get him to their side.

The room went quiet, with him looking at the floating ghost while he was strewn onto his bed. Now that he thought about it, he really hadn't truly talked with Utsuro, the only times they had conversed being him telling him something about the killing game or him begging him to give him information about something.

If they were going to be stuck together for life, they needed to truly know each other.

"Hey Utsuro..." The ghost stopped floating around the room before looking directly to him. With nary a sound coming out from his open mouth, he realized that he hadn't really thought about what to say to start a conversation with him, and Utsuro was starting to get impatient.

"What do you want, Makoto Naegi?"

Running possible questions in his mind, he just blurted out the first one he thought "Did you had any friends?"

The room went quiet, with the both of them looking right at the other. The question had apparently broken Utsuro's mask of indifference, because his expression in that moment was one of pure confusion.

After a short while, the ghost answered his question with just one word "What?"

"Well, I just wanted to know if, when you were still alive, you had friends at some point" Friends that could be right now missing him dearly.

Utsuro stood silent for a moment, eyes moving in indecision, before answering bluntly "No, I never had friends"

"What?!" His answer surprised him. From what he could see from him, Utsuro had to be some kind of a loner, but he couldn't fathom the idea of someone never having any kind of friend, or acquaintance, during their entire lives "Why?"

"Nobody truly wanted to have me as a friend, so I didn't wanted to be their friend either, simple as that" After saying that, he squinted in his direction "Why are you asking me that?"

He could feel his face heating up in embarrassment, making him sputter his answer out "A-ah well, I-I just thought that, because we're going to be stuck like this for the foreseeable future, it would be good to, you k-know, know each other a bit better, d-do you think?"

The ghost stood still for a moment, making him think for a second that he hadn't heard, or understood, him, before he finally answered.

"I think that this is a really dumb idea" His blunt words made him grimace, feeling like if his words had stabbed his chest from how curt they were "I don't have any interest on talking to you about myself or my past. You should be better talking about it with your classmates and leaving me alone"

Just when the ghost finished talking, the Night Announcement played both through the TV screen in his room, and the building, telling everyone that it was already nighttime.

"You should be going to sleep already, I don't want to hear you complaining about being tired when you have now time to sleep"

He really wanted to talk a little more, but he was right, it would be better for him to rest.

They still had to find a way out from this place, after all.

But his mind was still full of worries, thanks to what had happened earlier in the morning with Byakuya.

So he wasn't able to get the restful sleep he wanted.

When he woke up, Utsuro told him that the morning announcement had not yet played.

Because he had woken up five minutes before it could be played.

Now, the only thing he could do was waiting. With the shower water still closed, and the others probably still asleep, there wasn't much that he could do right now.

He stole a glance towards Utsuro. He could try to talk with him while he waits for the announcement.

"Uhhh, hey-"

"I already told you yesterday that I wasn't interested in talking about neither myself nor my past, so why are you even trying it?"

He couldn't help but to grimace at his words. He had never seen someone so against the idea of talking to someone else, of trying to connect with others, in his life.

Well, besides Byakuya and Toko.

But he just couldn't give up on trying it.

Because he wanted to truly know him.

He wanted to be his friend.

Just like with everyone else.

"What did you said?" He couldn't help but to jump a little when he realized that Utsuro was now closer to him than before, before he processed what he had just said.

He must had spoke his thoughts out loud once again, and the ghost must had heard him.

Well, there was no point on still keeping that in his mind, with him having already heard his mumblings, right?

It would be better to just tell him.

"Because I want to be your friend, Utsuro!"

Thank the gods for the rooms having been made soundproof, because he was sure that, if they weren't, him deciding to shout would had called everyone else right to his door.

But it was clear that, from the two of them, Utsuro was the one who had been the most surprised by his outburst, his face contorted into a mix of emotions, with surprise, confusion and wariness being the only ones he could identity.

It was in that moment that the Morning Announcement played, cutting through the silence that had flooded the room. He got up from the bed and, after taking a fast shower, he started to walk towards the door, stopping when he felt his gaze towards him.

Utsuro hadn't moved from where he had been floating since his outburst, looking at him with a still confused expression, but now muted by his more usual blank face.

He didn't knew why, but there was something in his expression that made his instincts scream to him that he was in distress.

And he was horrified for having caused that.

"Hey, Utsuro" He started to talk, not really knowing what to say to him "It's ok"

His words seemed like they snapped him back to reality, with the ghost slowly blinking, and breaking his focused glare to him, and muttering a weak "What"

"It's just that, I'm sorry for upsetting you. I truly want to be your friend, and I know that-"

But, before he could finish, Utsuro interrupted him.

"I'm not upset" That was a lie "It's just that..."

Utsuro stood quiet, expression furrowed in thought, trying to think about how to finish what he was saying.

But, before he did it, he decided to talk first.

"Hey, it's ok. You don't need to tell me everything now if you don't want to, and I'm truly sorry if my words ended up giving you that impression" He spoke slowly, while he opened the door to the hallway, before turning around and giving the ghost a smile "But I promise you that, once you're ready to talk, I'll be there at your side, ok?"

Once he was sure that Utsuro had calmed down, he left his room and started to walk towards the dining room, the ghost floating at his side.

But, when he stole a glance towards him, he noticed that he was still looking at him, his eyes reflecting a emotion he couldn't quite pinpoint.

The breakfast meeting of the remnants of class 78 went uneventful, and Makoto spent the day talking with some of them, but he was too distracted to truly pay attention to what was being said.

And it was because he just couldn't understand Makoto.

Throughout his life, everyone he met and tried to be 'friends' with him were either greedy bastards that were just going after the Divine Luck, and what it could grant them, or gullible idiots who were fed a complete lie, and only realized the truth when it was already too late.

But the class 78's luckster was neither of those things.

No matter how hard he tried, he just could see any malice behind his eyes, neither when he's trying to befriend his classmates in the middle of the killing game, nor when he conversed, and tried to connect, with him last night.

But he couldn't help but to keep his guard up.

This was too good to be true.

Makoto Naegi had to be just like those who abused the kindness of his old self just to get their hands on his curse of a luck, but he just was better at hiding his true intentions than the rest of them.

He waited until Makoto finally returned to his room and, once the door was locked, he immediately started asking.

"Why do you want to be my friend?"

Makoto immediately turned around from the door to look at him "What?"

His words felt like deja vu, having done it countless times in the past, he couldn't help but to notice "I was saying that why are you trying to 'befriend' me? What do you want from me that you could just go and take from your classmates, Makoto Naegi?"

"Nothing?" That was the luckster's answer, his face furrowed in genuine confusion, with not a shred of the fearful realization he always saw on all his fake 'friends' eyes being seen on his own "I-I just want to be their friends, to be your friend, I'm not interested on anything else, Utsuro"

Makoto's arms then dropped at his sides, a pained expression on his face, and he sighed "Why are you asking me that? Just, why?"

Everything about him, from his voice to his body language, just told him that he was upset, that he was hurt, by his accusations.

He couldn't help but to wince at that. He tried to make Makoto reveal if he had any ulterior motives for wanting to be his friend, but he only got more proof that he was being sincere with his offer.

It was clear that he was one of the only two truly selfless people he ever knew thorough his life, and he hated it.

He didn't even realized that Makoto had gotten close to him until he noticed one of his hands hovering right at the side of his arm.

Makoto sighed softly before he started talking "Look, Utsuro, it's just that... I want to understand why you're so upset with me wanting to be your friend" He just couldn't force himself to look at his eyes.

There was just something in them that reminded him of her "Whatever happened to you in the past, I swear to you tha-"

But, before he could finish, his stomach growled loud enough for the two of them to hear it.

"O-oh, well..." His face had went completely red at the noise, moving his hand to rub at the back of his neck in embarrassment "I-I think it would be a good idea for me to go to the kitchen and grab something to eat before the nighttime announcement plays, don't you think?"

He just nodded at him, being just glad that he had finally stopped prodding on both his inability to have friends and his trust issues.

But he had a feeling that this conversation was far from over.

When he started his trip towards the kitchen, he thought that it was going to be just going in there, grab something, and go back to his room to continue with his conversation with Utsuro.

So he didn't expected the presence of Mondo and Kiyotaka on the dining room.

Nor the fact that they decided to drag him to the, recently opened, sauna to serve as their referee for a, frankly idiotic, endurance battle that they were planning to do.

He, wisely, decided to stay outside the room, waiting for the moment that one, or the both, of them got overwhelmed by the heat and got out of the room, ending their stupid scuffle before something bad happened.

But, with every single minute that went by with neither of them giving up on their joint quest to one-up the other, the more worried he became about them.

And their stubbornness made it impossible for him to make them stop.

When half an hour went by, and they rejected his offer to stop the 'competition', he just slumped against the wall and sat onto the floor, rubbing his eyes in frustration and worry, before taking a look towards Utsuro.

The ghost's expression had returned to its usual emotionlessness a while ago, his previous stress having been erased the moment the growling of his stomach stopped his talk to him, and made him go to get some food.

He still wanted to ask him about his sour opinions on friendship, but now his biggest worry was the possibility of Mondo and Kiyotaka getting hurt because of their mutually wounded pride, so he put his conversation with Utsuro in the back burner for now.

"If you're worried about those two accidentally killing themselves from the heat, you can rest easy knowing that their deaths wouldn't be seen as deserving of a trial by the mastermind"

He couldn't help but to cringe at his words, admonishing him for his lack of empathy towards others, before taking another look to his classmates in the sauna.

Their faces, and shoulders, were red like tomatoes, and their bodies were drenched in sweat.

They both looked like they were about to faint, but neither was willing to give up and 'let the other win'.

He then spent some more time waiting just outside the room, until the night announcement played, forcing him to reluctantly leave them behind after he again failed to make them stop their stubborn, and dangerous, 'battle'.

But, once he arrived to the hallway where their rooms were situated, he first went to Sakura's room and rang the bell.

He didn't wanted to leave them all alone inside of that death trap, so he had decided to tell her about and ask her to keep an eye on them.

With her strength, she would be able to get them out of there with no problem if something goes wrong.

But, no matter how many times he rang, she didn't answer.

Maybe she was already asleep, but he wasn't really sure.

He thought for a moment about asking Utsuro to look inside the room, but he immediately discarded that idea, and instead left and went to his room.

Once he entered his room and closed the door, he just let himself fall into his bed, and into a dream.

Even though he couldn't help but to still be worried.

Worried for Mondo and Kiyotaka.

And for Utsuro.
