Yes yes Yiling Wei Sect teaching safe and controlled demonic cultivation is very sexy but I think too many people overlook that Wei Wuxian is first and foremost an inventor! He is a man of science! Manipulating resentful energy and doing necromancy is only ONE of the many things this man has done or come up with that changed the cultivation world. Yiling Wei Sect AU where the burial mounds are crowded with workshops and laboratories, forges and studios. Little shidis run errands, fetching and carrying crafting materials, and in addition to the older disciples teaching cultivation there are also classes held for mundane trades and crafts, to be combined and reworked in new and incredible ways. Talismans, enchanted objects, spiritual tools and weapons, useful gadgets. Workrooms full of long, low tables where disciples work shoulder-to-shoulder on their newest inventions, shouting ideas and suggestions from one end of the room to the other. Swords are still traditional, but the Wei Sect is always inviting guest instructors to teach other forms of weaponry, and it’s not unusual for a student’s actual preferred weapon to be something other than a sword. Classes are chaos, students are encouraged to argue and debate, and no topic is ever considered “mastered” even by the teachers -- there is always more to learn, to explore, to invent or re-invent. We teach all that is known, but not all that IS. Respect the old ways, but don’t be mindlessly obedient to them. Yiling being the fantasy equivalent of the most technologically advanced city in the world. Not all the things the Wei sect come up with are strictly for cultivation, after all. There are talisman-powered looms and plows that pull themselves and little crystal charms that store spiritual energy so that even non-cultivators can activate the flameless lanterns that light the town and the moving platform that will carry them up the mountain path, if they have right or reason to go visit the burial mounds. What I’m saying is that they’re all nerds. They’re all nerds, is what I’m saying.

Considering wwx's canonical breeding kink and his general fondness for dubiously safe scientific experiments it is technically within the realm of possibility that a few years post-canon he just invents cultivation hrt and transition surgery by accident.

He was not brought back to kill Madame Jin.

But perhaps making a clean sweep of it all is simply for the best. He'll have to ask Jiang Yanli what her opinions are about her mother-in-law. He assumes there nothing good.

"Stop looking like that," Jin Guangyao says, somehow without moving his mouth at all and bland smile still in place.

That's a neat trick.

"Look like what? This is just my face," he says then rubs at his nose when Jin Guangyao raises an eyebrow. "Why is she - it's hardly like you're an outlier!"

"Xuanyu-mei," he says mildly, voice low enough that they won't be overheard.

He scowls and crosses his arms. In these robes it has the unfortunate effect of pressing his breasts front and center but he's refusing to acknowledge that.

There's the sound of a scuffle and he glances to see Jingyi attempting to beat an Ouyang disciple with his sleeves and Sizhui putting in a half-hearted effort to stop him. What's that about?

They're going to have to tell Sizhui. He hopes he'll be excited. It'll be quite a bit of an age difference, but he still wants Sizhui to be happy about having a sibling. Or at least not upset about it. Or not upset about it for long, he amends, because Jiang Cheng hadn't exactly been thrilled at first. To be fair, Wei Wuxian hadn't been either.

"You're pouting like a child," Jin Guangyao says. "Can you at least pretend to have some decorum?"

"No," he says, eyes drifting to where his siblings are speaking with the Yu sect leader. How had Uncle Jiang told them about him? From his memory, he thinks that he didn't and just showed up with him one day.

That probably won't work on Sizhui. There are a couple things he might notice.

Uhg he's just gotten used to this body and it's going to start doing new and different things. He hopes this doesn't mess with his core too badly - he's worked hard on it!

"When are you coming back to Gusu?" he asks. That would be an ideal time for him to kill some people, because anyone with half a brain cell is going to suspect Jin Guangyao when Jin Guangshan dies.

Granted, getting him away from the scene of the crime won't do much to alleviate suspicion. It's not like he's not perfectly capable of orchestrating a high profile murder from half a world away, after all.

"When Xichen can devise an excuse, I suppose," he answers, mouth twisting.

Wei Wuxian leans so he can use his stupidly ornate robes as a cover for briefly grasping his forearm.

This whole marriage thing is so stupid and he understands that now in a way he hadn't when he'd first arrived. Mo Xuanyu had killed herself rather than marry and Lan Zhan had been stoic and furious and uninterested.

It was supposed to be Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen.

Making two of his favorite people miserable for no reason is more than enough reason to kill him, surely. He's done more for less.

MDZS modern AU, highschool setting, in which, tired of seeing his little brother friend-less, LXC decides to find him a friend himself

So he looks around the school yard one day and picks literally the loudest, most social dude around (WWX, obviously), pulls him aside and is like "i'll pay you 100$ weekly to be friends with my brother who's juat transferred here and is not very social."

WWX is iffy about it bc it's absolutely unfair to do that to someone - but he's, what, 15, Madam Yu is already harping on him about paying rent and making friends comes second nature to him - so he says yes.

He gets a name and a picture and he's off on his mission.

What luck that this new LWJ kid signed up for a music class elective where WWX has also just secured a spot. Sweet, they already have something in common!

Turns out, WWX does actually enjoy being LWJ's friend a lot, teasing him and getting reactions out of him and everything. He doesn't need the money LXC gives him at all, so he gives back as much of it, as quickly as he can after getting a job - after all "I don't need money to be friends with someone I would have wanted to befriend anyway!"

Time passes, it's wangxian and they fall in love, even plan to move in together after high school and marry after college.

Except, one day LWJ hears some people talking about how "Lan Xichen must've raised Wei Wuxian's pay by a lot now! Pretending to be Lan Wangji's boyfriend must be a lot harder than just acting as his friend!"

LWJ doesn't believe it and doesn't care about gossip.

But he thinks of how suddenly he and WWX became friends, of how he and LXC sometimes talked alone like they had a secret, how it always felt a little too good to be true.

Who should he go to first? His brother, who bought out someone for LWJ to spend time with because he didn't think LWJ able to find someone himself?

Or his boyfriend, who's been lying to him the whole time in exchange for cash?

For a while, I kept periodically thinking about F/M Wangxian (Male Wei Wuxian and Female Lan Wangji) without being able to figure out why I kept being distracted by F/M Wangxian. I mean, I think different genderbending AU situations are fun to think about in fanfiction, especially in worlds where gender roles are a problem. M/M, F/M, M/F, and F/F Wangxian all change the story slightly and I think it's neat to explore why and how.

And obviously, F!LWJ would be a total babe, that's nice to think about, but why still M!WWX and not F!WWX? F!WWX would also be a total babe, though of a different type, especially as the Yiling Patriarch. But my brain kept insisting that M!WWX was still crucial somehow and I couldn't figure out why that setup.

I mean, it is funny to think about how M!WWX's unchanged flirty behavior in their teenage years would suddenly set off every single alarm bell in the Cloud Recesses due to people being able to SEE IT thanks to heteronormativity goggles. WWX with a degree of societal permission to be romantically interested in Lan Wangji? Intolerable levels of annoying. Unbearable to witness. Singing love songs under her balcony type bullshit like he wants her to start another fight under the moonlight. He's writing her poetry (clever "joke" poems bordering on innuendo and actual romantic poems) and has the gall to be good at it. Lan Qiren is barely resisting the urge to beat WWX off with a broomstick. Lan Xichen doesn't know whether to be horrified or delighted (LWJ is bluuuuushing).

I do also like the idea of WWX coming back from the dead and finding out that the common people have decided in the past decade (thanks to the heteronormativity goggles) that the noble female cultivator LWJ had a Tragic Romance with the Evil Yiling Patriarch. Poor woman! WWX: "Who had a what now?" (I do also like the idea of Wangxian actually having a Tragic Romance during and after the war. And mutually stated romantic interest and affection still didn't fix anything for them. But it's funny to think about WWX getting completely blindsided by this EPIC LOVE STORY if there was no actual relationship.)

(Sizhui is still adopted here! Noble and pure-hearted LWJ adopted a war orphan because she longed to be a mother but swore never to love again after the Yiling Patriarch broke her heart, obviously! WWX, listening to this gossip: "She what? I mean, Lan Zhan would make an amazing mom, good for her, lucky kid, and no one is good enough for her if she doesn't want to get married, but seriously, I cannot stress this enough, what the fuck. She didn't like me back! Aiyah, I bet she's still so mad at me for ruining her reputation like this.")

Eventually, I realized that the key piece of this AU that I was missing was that I wanted to write F/M Wangxian that turned into F/F Wangxian. Because I think Transfem Wei Wuxian would display (and I mean this affectionately) the most ridiculous trans egg behavior imaginable, especially because it would lean more towards one of those "I was mostly fine living as a guy, but I'm so much happier as a girl" situations. Absurd amounts of queer foreshadowing.

So, Wei Wuxian gets resurrected into a female MXY's body or something and obliviously goes, "Oh! This is nice! I've always wanted to try being a woman! Yes, I can roll with this." And eventually Wei Wuxian has to actually examine the fact that she really likes being a woman and doesn't want to "go back" to being a man in any way, but not before putting Lan Wangji through an incredible amount of new "joke" flirtation. And people who knew WWX before are like... "Hmm. Some things are making sense now."

Things like: 1) As a teenager, WWX insisted that LWJ was such a strong woman that, if they got married, LWJ could be "the husband" and "he" would happily be "the wife". There were lots and lots of "I want to live as Jiejie's spoiled wife" jokes. Consequently, at the Cloud Recesses, at least one outrageously inappropriate joke was made by WWX about LWJ knocking "him" up, because WWX's breeding kink is still very much a thing. WWX didn't know about her breeding kink when she made that joke; both she and LWJ learned something about themselves that day.

2) Wei Wuxian would frequently pull crossdressing-related pranks saying: "Wow, this is crazy. I can't believe you guys are forcing me to put on a dress and all this makeup for this prank! You guys are wild!" And Jiang Cheng would reply: "No one is forcing you to do this. No one dared you. You suddenly volunteered to crossdress for a prank that does not require crossdressing AGAIN. Also, give me that brush, I'll do your makeup because you suck ass at it."

3) WWX would frequently go on rants about how women are so much more beautiful than men, which flew under the radar as a "normal behavior for a lustful young man", but there was always something a little off about it. Like, WWX might say that women are so beautiful and perfect that everyone would choose to be one if allowed to pick before being born just to admire the gorgeous view, and JC might say, "I don't think that's quite right...?" But WWX would just say something like (like an obnoxious teenage sibling), "That's because you know that you'd make an ugly woman!" or, "Are you saying that women aren't perfect? Also, are you saying Shijie isn't the best person in the world?" And JC would have to be like, "I didn't say that! And I'd make a beautiful woman, fuck you! Also, how is that relevant to your point?"

By the end of this AU, there is at least one public love confession that is horribly embarrassing for everyone else to witness, in which Wei Wuxian has finally realized that LWJ used to be in love with "him" and that she loves LWJ back, but tearfully apologizes because she can't be the handsome man that LWJ loved anymore. Even if she could be a man again, she still doesn't want to stop being a woman, even if she's not very good at it yet. She can't perform the required husbandly duties like provide a good home for LWJ! She can't father LWJ's children anymore!

(Jiang Cheng: "Do you have to do this now?! Stop being indecent! There are children here. Also, we're all being held hostage.")

But it's all cool! Because shortly after realizing WWX was back and determined to live as a woman, LWJ speedran a sexuality crisis, flipped a mental switch, and essentially went, "I'm a lesbian now." (Or maybe LWJ was really confused about being attracted to WWX when they first met, because LWJ had only been physically attracted to her fellow female disciples up until then, so WWX seemed like the "exception", until WWX comes back from the dead as a woman and then it's like, "Ah. Not an exception after all.")

wwx is totally right tho like in canon jc is really mean and harsh with his disciples and with JL, and he also just has so many anger issues and insecurities and he takes so much personally and he's also very emotionally immature and self-centered and self-pitying. and I'm sure some of that is just exacerbated in wwx's proximity and maybe he's better with strangers but man. a doctor is a really weird profession for him idk I can't see it. I'd be scared of him. I'd feel judged. aggressive doctors are the worst. in the book, people are scared to go to him for help which is exactly what you don't want from a medical professional. he's also extremely self-centered (like, understandably I guess) but he really struggles to care or act for people outside his immediately family/sect and I just don't see that translating very well to looking after the welfare of strangers. I mean, unless he considers his patients like he considers his sect in canon but he's even mean to his sect members so idk. I can tell you from experience that impatient and short-tempered doctors are nightmares to work with, as are doctors who use their position to throw around their weight

jc also really struggles to self-reflect and I can't see him taking feedback or suggestions from people who are working under him, and it's really dangerous to have a doctor who doesn't believe they could ever be wrong because like, everyone makes mistakes! the team around you is going to keep an eye out to prevent that but you have to be open to the possibility and have the grace to listen and adjust. I suppose it would be different in a private practice but that would still require him listening to his patients if they don't agree with his decisions or something

also medicine is super stressful and can be rly competitive and you really need to have confidence in yourself and jc isn't particularly gifted with the academic genius and it really seems like a bad fit for him as well, given his insecurities and raging competitiveness and willingness to completely give up once he feels like he's lost what makes him special
