Saw Max took Watchmen off their service and I would not be surprised at all if in a few years we find out the Discovery buyout was a torch and burn scheme. Genuinely have not seen that company make one good choice since the merger

im a basic bitch who LOVES a frame-within-a-frame shot where a character looks into the camera AS the mise-en-scene around them unveils some pivotal character identity reveal that will be paralleled later (or has been paralleled before). i love when it’s done RIGHT in that “wink wink you’re complicit. you’re in on this secret” punishment on the viewer (and twin peaks and true detective obviously carry the loaded burden of laura mulvey’s scopophilic accusations for being visual narratives that use female bodies as sites of male negotiation)
hbo watchmen raises the stakes by interrogating the very medium itself (the medium is the message!) along with the diegetic use of these frame-within-frames to parallel comic panels. i’m obsessed. possessed. *martin scorsese voice* cinema.

If I had a nickel for every time there was a reboot/sequel to a critical darling that was made by people who seemed to fundamentally not understand the source material, I would have two nickels.

this show is just begging me to say excessive state violence against anyone including white supremacists is not good

I think HBO Watchmen got the praise it got largely piggybacking on the 2020 protests against police brutality. Critical reaction was positive but not as overwhelmingly so before that. Then came the Emmys etc and here was a need to be Topically Relevant™. Also mask jokes, that was all over the /r/Watchmen subreddit and was unbearable and in poor taste.
Well, the sociology of the Watchmen reception is its own subject.
I mean there is a phenomenon of "writing for the water cooler discussions" which is to say you write stuff on TV that will get buzz online and as such caters to what people in the media or commentariat are interested in writing about. The Lindelof show did that and the nature of episodic TV is that it's hard to get a sense of the full thing until it's over.
To me Watchmen is weird and confusing...much like Lindelof is. Like that guy doesn't have the imagination, talent and political daring of Moore so the whole thing reads like a centrist co-opting of radical critique.

I know there are a TON of HBO shows that ought to be included on this list
These are just (some of) the ones I’ve seen - I’ll do follow up polls for all the others
