Atomic scientists set the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight than ever before on Tuesday, saying threats of nuclear war, disease and climate volatility have been exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, putting humanity at greater risk of annihilation.
The Doomsday Clock, created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to illustrate how close humanity has come to the end of the world, moved its "time" in 2023 to 90 seconds to midnight, 10 seconds closer than it has been for the past three years.
Midnight on this clock marks the theoretical point of annihilation. The clock's hands are moved closer to or farther away from midnight based on scientists' reading of existential threats at a particular time.
The new time reflects a world in which Russia's invasion of Ukraine has revived fears of nuclear war.

A gaggle of onlookers, staring. Transfixed. But why? As I got closer, I could hear the gasps. The murmurs of disbelief. And then I saw it... And I knew... nothing would ever be the same again.

I haven't seen anyone talking about it on here, but Unstoppable Doom Patrol #6 and the latest Halloween special (DC's Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun) have basically confirmed Dorothy and Kate are still dead.
The former has Dorothy's corpse being dug up by the Brotherhood of Evil as part of a ritual for General Immortus to gain the Candlemaker's powers. In the latter, Cliff is haunted by the ghosts of everyone associated with the Doom Patrol who died, starting with Kate and Dorothy.
It legitimately upsets me that editorial decided to keep these two dead as a plot device to make Cliff sad and for conflict. While the Halloween special is more humanizing than their appearance as ghoulish apparitions in the Knight Terrors event, it's hard to accept it when it came AFTER I tried to get the two back in last year's Pride anthology.
However, the Halloween story is a special kind of aggravating because it goes out of its way to acknowledge Celsius and Negative Woman are both still alive again, Arani with the Doomed and Valentina with the Peoples' Heroes as they were in Doomsday Clock. Cliff even asks how they came back in the first place.
I guess those two weren't important enough to keep dead.

has anyone else seen this INSANE full page ad from Kinema Junpo magazine?!
everyones been talking about the obvious clock symbolism in the movie, and some of the discourse has been weather or not the cultural dissonance was intentional, but whoever designed this ad as was DEFINITELY leaning towards “yes”

With every terrible thing that's going on in the world, I thought to check the doomsday clock. If anyone is unfamiliar, the doomsday clock, created by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, is a measurement of sorts to how close the world is to a human-made global catastrophe, such as full scale nuclear war.
The clock has been maintained since 1947, and the threat is reassessed every year in January.
It was originally set at seven minutes to midnight, and this January was moved to its nearest position yet, at ninety seconds to midnight, due to the ongoing threats made by Russia in regards to using nuclear force on Ukraine.
I just want everyone to stop and think for a second-- this hasn't been reassessed since Israel started bombing Gaza again.
I shudder to think of how close it'll get moved to in January 2024. How close the world really is to World War III, to nuclear annihilation.
Wars and genocides are breaking out all over the world right now. Ukraine. Palestine. The DNC. the US is arming Taiwan. Poland is stocking up weapons. How many more people are going to die before we decide we can do better than feeding the fucking war machine?

i have complicated feelings abt the doomsday clock
like on one hand, i feel that it’s unproductive and scares ordinary folks more than it pressures world superpowers. it doesn’t accomplish much of anything.
on the other hand, it really eloquently expresses how i think many people feel right now. it feels like the world is ticking down to midnight. it feels like we’re on the precipice of total disaster. it feels like the world is crumbling around us.
i’m surprised it’s still at 90 seconds, honestly. i thought for sure they would have moved it forward this year.
i feel hopeless for a lot of reasons. the doomsday clock isn’t one of them. it just feels like an expression of the hopelessness i feel about everything else.
