I'm just thinkin' about how Eda pushed Raine away because of the curse.
Tumblr media
She was afraid to let them in. She was afraid to ask them for help, or share how she was feeling...she was scared to show the side of herself that was messy and dangerous and painful and (in her mind) unlovable.
Tumblr media
But when she finally let Raine see who she actually was...
Tumblr media
...this was their reaction.
Tumblr media
...they love all of her. Including those messy and dangerous and painful parts.

I feel like for the first few years of guardianship Darius and Hunter really struggle to figure out how to refer to each other.
Like it's easier for Hunter, he pretty quickly settles on "guardian" for explaining their relationship to other people and just referring to Darius by name when talking to the man himself. Overtime the phrasing gradually warms, becoming "foster parent" and eventually, once Hunter's already an adult old enough to move out, "Dad".
(Sidenote: he doesn't move out til he's in his mid to late twenties, bc he's under no obligation too, Darius low-key doesn't want him too, and the two of them want to make up for lost time in a sense, since Hunter only had 2 years of legal dependency on Darius before aging out of the system. Darius adopts Hunter retroactively as an adult)
Darius on the other hand has a real conundrum on his hands for those first few years. He has a lot of options! But "ward" is too formal and makes it sound like Darius picked him up off the street like after his parents were murdered, "apprentice/student" isn't really accurate considering the focus of Darius and Hunter's relationship has less to do with Hunter learning magic and more to do with Hunter being housed and fed. "Kid" and "foster son" are there...but...
Look, Darius isn't going to refer to Hunter more familiarly than Hunter refers to him! He's not gonna make it WEIRD. He's not a dad, because Hunter doesn't want/need him to be (and also parenthood is scary <3). Darius doesn't know the first thing about being a dad, despite how his friend group teases him.
Eda and Eberwolf are the two who are worst about it. They torture him with how 'fatherly' he's allegedly being (allegations Darius will DENY til his GRAVE!!!) And Eda specifically compares his journey to hers, saying it always starts off with you referring to them as your apprentice (again, Darius doesn't plan on doing that), as your roommate (...kinda weird in Darius' opinion? But okay Eda), or even your pet (????HELLO???). But eventually, they always become your dumb kid when you least expect it.
She's had a couple cups of appleblood by this point, but Darius knows on some level she's right and he's steadfastly ignoring that fact, even as Eber continues to refer to Hunter as his "cub" (kinda cute but Darius doesn't know how Hunter would feel being compared to an animal). The only people who are even remotely reasonable about all this (besides Lilith who's a bit disinterested in kid talk) is Raine and Alador, who both sort of neutrally, a bit awkwardly refer to Hunter as Darius' Boy.
Darius referring to Hunter as "my boy" is funnily enough what sticks the longest before it evolves to son boy. Hunter's crushing it at a derby match? Darius is whooping and cheering, yelling "THAT'S MY BOY!!!" At the other parents in the stands. Hunter is doing something dangerous or inadvisable where others can see him? "Darius, your boy-" "AHH! MY BOY". Hunter, a year into his stay with Darius finally comes clean about everything to do with him being a grimwalker, and is afraid that he's going to go back to seeing him as just an inferior replacement for Darius' beloved mentor? Darius (who has just had to process some of the most bonkers, emotionally heavy information in his life) gently, hesitantly puts a hand on his shoulder (the 'good' one Hunter doesn't mind people touching), and says that Hunter's much more than that. He's Darius' Boy and he's not going to kick him out or get angry or love him any less for things out of his control. It's good. They're good.
Like I said, it evolves over time and 'boy' becomes somewhat obsolete as the two get caught up in the joy of finally feeling able to explicitly refer to each other as family. But unlike "guardian" or "ward" the word never gets fully retired. Even when Hunter is 30 and is arguing that he's more of a man than a boy now, he is still getting referred to by Darius as "his boy", the way some parents never really stop calling their adult kids baby or kiddo (Camila and Eda respectively btw).
Hunter makes one of those corny matching shirt sets at some point for a father's Day gift when he's 17/18, where the two shirts say "if lost, return Boy to me" (Darius) and "I'm Boy" (Hunter). Hunter mostly did it so he could own a funny shirt that says "I'm boy". Darius openly weeps upon seeing them. Like Oh my Titan he's boy. He's my boy. Oh wow
#ramblings of a lunatic#the owl house#toh#hunter toh#darius deamonne#dadrius#made this instead of finishing my dadrius week day 1 comic. it's okay i have time#i think this post dips it's toes into being one of those 'part writing drabble/part textpost analysis' posts#which I'm okay w/ tbh i love those#i just hope it reads well#the important thing about dadrius + eberwolf to me is that it's just as unlikely a trio as King Eda and Luz are#just as weird and has just as gradual and retrospectively funny a journey as them#i also specified foster parent instead of adoptive parent just bc i read it in a fic once where Hunter was placed in isles foster care-#-post canon and he had a social worker who was a gargoyle named Chantelle. it was delightful#this is my homage to that. the fic was 'the titan laughs in flowers' i think (thank you user yardsards for the rec)#alador still gets the instinct to refer to Hunter as the golden guard and amity gets on his case about it#so referring to Hunter as darius' boy grew out of that and spread to raine who finds it kind of adorable#darius refers to hunter as his foster son for the first time when his (darius' i mean) family comes to visit#not as like a statement of anything they don't deny Hunter as a deamonne. they love him like they love a scraggly cat#but just like. it felt right for Darius in the moment and Hunter got emotional about it#anyway happy early dadrius week I'm rotating them in my mind I'm biting down on them like a chew toy etc etc

Gus is genuinely the closest I've seen to a charcter with psychosis thats treated as A PERSON. With a life and hobbies and goals, without dehumanizing them or making them seem like some out of control monster that could atttack at any time. And I really dont see it talked about that much....

they’re definitely going to bring up the huntlow ship by the end of the show because hunter is SIMPING hard but i really want them to do something interesting with it. i don’t want them to just get together with no drama aimed at each other. so what i propose is: a deconstruction of the last-minute love confession trope.
hunter spends the second or even third episode blushing after willow. but willow doesn’t flirt or blush at him, just encourages and hangs out with him like she would her other friends. and at the end of the second or the middle of the third episode, the gang is gearing up for a huge battle with belos, the collector, or any other villains they’ll have to confront. everyone knows it’s dangerous, so there’s a lot of sweet moments between friends and family where they make peace with some of their conflicts and reinforce how much they care about each other. lumity and raeda both get an “i love you” or a kiss.
hunter pulls willow aside and confesses his feelings. he says he has a crush on her and asks if after they defeat the villains, they could go on a date. maybe he gets out a plant glyph and makes a bouquet. it’s very cute and reminiscent of a lot of love confessions in movies and tv that characters do right before a battle.
but willow FREEZES. she’s only thought of hunter as a friend up to this point, and hunter dropping this bombshell during the most stressful day of her life really isn’t helping her decide how to answer him. she has to recontextualize all of their interactions up to this point. and whether she eventually decides to date him, she can’t make up her mind at that moment, because she’s never even considered dating hunter before.
because the “last minute love confession” trope only works out well if the two characters have been pining and basically knows the other’s feelings. it’s a good way to clear up the air in that situation before a dangerous fight where they might not get a chance after. but if only one side has/is aware of their romantic feelings, the last minute love confession becomes solely a way for the person confessing to get it off their chest. it doesn’t matter if the person being confessed to wants to know about these feelings or reciprocates, the confession is sprung on them without prior warning, and now they have to think about that on top of the dangerous battle.
so before willow can give hunter an answer about that date, everyone has to get in position for the fight. and during the fight, willow is DISTRACTED. she knows she needs to focus on the fight, but she can’t help but think about hunter’s confession from a few minutes before, regardless of whether she reciprocates. and at one point, willow gets a clear shot to take out the villain or rescue one of their friends or whatever the goal of the battle is, but she MISSES.
if hunter had confessed a few hours or days earlier, giving willow time to come to terms with it before the battle, or if he had waited until after the battle to confess, it would have been fine. but he tells her at the WORST possible time, so willow has something else on her mind during one of the most important battle of her life. and because of that, everything goes very, very wrong.
#toh#the owl house#shut up pandora#hunter toh#hunter noceda#willow park#this isn't to say willow would blame hunter for distracting her#shes too nice her first instinct is to spiral into the 'im a horrible incompetent leader and i shouldnt do anything ever' mentality#but regardless of if she likes him or not love confessions are distracting! they make you blank out for a bit!#it ends up being all you can think about for the next hour at least be it out of flattery or happiness of discomfort!#and ive always disliked the trope where someone confesses to their love interest right before or during a battle like#now? your love interest is going to get hit by an arrow because youve distracted them#and the worst ones are the ones where they confess by kissing the love interest without prior warning#sometimes its unclear if the love interest is even interested and i know its for drama! but could you do that at literally ANY other time#it just feels cruel to the love interest you know#like the person confessing is getting stuff off their chest but they have no regard for how the love interest is feeling#if they reciprocate theyll have to go into a deadly battle knowing if they die they wont be able to continue a relationship they really want#and if they dont reciprocate it puts the burden on the love interest to turn them down and go into the battle being emotional about it#that may just be me though#anyway after that it doesnt really matter if the huntlow ship actually gets together#again i still dont ship it but if they do something interesting with it like this then it has a place in the story#but to reiterate it doesnt matter if willow has feelings for hunter in this scenario just the confession would be enough to distract her#and to those of you compiling screenshots where they stand next to each other#or where willow smiles fondly at gus and hunters shenanigans and say its only because shes in love with hunter#and basically trying to TJLC yourselves into believing willow is madly in love with hunter at this point of the story#she...really isnt......#at least not yet#does she even seek him out to hang out when hes not with gus#does HUNTER even seek her out to hang out when SHES not with gus#lowhunt

🔥 every time darius is shown to use his abomination form he is using it in a very deliberate and calculating way, and not because he is supposedly so angry/furious
meanwhile every time he shows real strong emotions, whether positive or negative, he is not in the transformed form (though his abomination powers are clearly important to him with how he uses them for affectionate gestures, etc).
and, imo, both times he is seemingly very outwardly furious - with Raine in ER and the kids in the ASiAS - he is playing the role, possibly playing up the real annoyances (because he is more often shown to be annoyed than angry in actual canon). and compare to how he reacts to other coven heads who are his real enemies: focused fighting with Vitimir, concern over Eber AND over failing to stop the spell in KT, and disdainful and stern expression in the finale. It's concern, hurt, or pettiness, annoyance rather than explosive anger.

Things My Adventures With Superman does correctly
-makes Clark Kent so relatable fr (a certain life action movie company seems to like to make him not have any anxiety)
-easter eggs of comics hidden everywhere
-Clark literally does a fucking anime girl transformation into his superman costume
-it’s so owl house coded fr
-starts with backstory of characters meeting for the first time but also having flashbacks later building canon as you go
-this show is literally fanservice I love it
-scratches the same brain itch as the cw shows did in early seasons
-is predictable in just the right ways but also throws a curveball when they gotta
-all the characters are so relatable I love them
-asjdkdjkfj I could talk about this show all day
-I have found nothing wrong with this show and usually I’m picky about at least one thing
TL;DR: I have such high hopes for this show it better not let me down in future seasons

Thinking more about Raine and Darius’ friendship when they were both at Hexside because like. I’m not sure it feels quite right to me for them to have been super close back then -- friends, yes, absolutely, just in a somewhat more casual/impermanent way seeing as it didn’t seem to have lasted beyond their time at Hexside -- but there is one scenario that works quite well for me.
We know Darius had some kind of falling out with Alador and Odalia (who seem to have been his closest friends as a teen), and while Raine and Eda obviously remained close and dated into their early 20s or so, Eda ended up dropping out of school sometime after she was cursed and wouldn’t have been around Hexside much. So you’ve got two witches who formerly had extremely close relationships with other kids at their school that abruptly -- and in Raine’s case especially, pretty traumatically -- became social loners.
I feel like that could very easily evolve into sticking to each other until one or both of them graduated because hey, we’re the only two who don’t really have anyone to sit with at lunch anymore and it’s awkward and people are gossiping about both of us, and out of everyone I know you sort of get where I’m at right now and why I’m sad about it and do you maybe want to come over and study sometime before finals? Yeah? Okay, cool, bring some snacks.
Which. Them having a sort of teenage friendship-of-convenience borne out of going through simultaneous emotional rough patches (Darius coping with the rejection of people he was previously close to and Raine still spending lots of time with Eda, but missing her at school and worrying a lot about her health all of a sudden) seems like the right flavor of Bonding Experience for the two of them, and is sweet and sad in a way that makes me appreciate the idea of them being rebels together in the present day a little extra.

I’m very normal about the bard class. about the. you know. the idea of the only barrier between you and mortal peril being your art, the purest expression of your soul, your joy and whimsy and sorrow and hope. the ultimate art kid dream of being able to physically shape reality through your favorite creative medium. I have a normal amount of emotions about that

goddamnit, whatever you do, don't think about how completely and totally alone Amity was for the majority of her life, even while surrounding by other people who claimed to like her and care about her but could barely hide their distain and disapproval. And how probably the only reason she wanted to join the emperor's coven in the first place was to make her mom happy and so she would finally have someone's approval and respect and a community.......

Not nearly enough people talking about how both revelations about Hunter happened and were literally glossed over??? No further reaction??? We're gonna ask Luz to elaborate on the helping Philip thing and not the Caleb-grimwalker thing? Alright 💀

Oh another one...
What do you about the idea of Emerald Trio (Willow, Gus and Hunter) is a reverse parallel of the Witch, Philip and Caleb? Especially considering how Hunter treats Gus as a little brother. In a way they could be like "what if Philip wasn't a asshole" route .
I don't think the comparison fits as well as people want it to myself, because people are dismissing Gus and Willow's existing relationship to instead focus on their relation to Hunter, which does all three characters a disservice. Gus and Willow were friends long before Hunter came into their lives, and love and cherish each other very much for being the only person they could rely on in the most difficult periods of both of their lives. Gus' initial wariness of Hunter wasn't born of prejudice like Philip's hatred of Wittewife, but because he loved Willow and wanted her to be happy and was afraid Hunter would hurt her.
And while Gus is MUCH closer than he initially was with Hunter now, I don't think that their bond overshadows the way he cares about Willow. And Willow, in the meantime, grew more fond of Hunter not in spite of Gus' mistrust and objections, but because Gus and Hunter moved past them and became close. Her soft 'Thanks Hunter' in response to Hunter saving Gus in Labyrinth Runners reminded me of the 'Thank you,' that Amity gave Luz for loaning her the Good Witch Azura book at the end of Lost in Languages, when her feelings had just turned to that of a crush.
Also, while the Wittebros relationship is seeped in betrayal and a selfishness on the part of Philip, who felt that the family bonds that he and Caleb shared through birth should have been more important than Caleb's love for his wife, Willow, Gus, and Hunter have no such sense of entitlement. None of them were obligated to love and help one another. But they CHOSE to do so anyways, because they understand loneliness and pain and saw something in each other worth loving, much like Eda, King, and Luz.
And even if the shapes of their love are different for each of them, they are all equally cherished by one another, and the person who is not involved in a specific corners' relationship as a pair (Willow/Hunter, Willow+Gus, Gus+Hunter) still manages to strenthen those bonds without intruding on that corner of the relationship or needing to fall to the wayside so that the pair can get attention without them. I've never seen anything like that in any media before, and it's a beautiful thing that just makes me love all three even more.
