( source ) Michael Eisner described the film's plot as a ''Taming of the Shrew" type story with an angry, bitter Snow Queen looking for a husband.
"Eisner asks for the Snow Queen synopsis. 'The Snow Queen is a terrible bitch,' Ruggels says 'When her suitors try to melt her heart, the Snow queen freezes them.' 'Each one should be a phony, but different,' Eisner says of the suitors. 'Then along comes this regular guy' Ruggels continues... 'The regular guy goes up there, he's not that great, but he's a good person. He starts to unfreeze her... she melts.'"
- Mary-Jane Ruggels and Michael Eisner on The Snow Queen
Though Michael Eisner liked this take on the film, plans fell through when Disney's initial contract with Pixar failed to be renewed.
There are many pieces of concept art from this attempt. And one of the most notable things to survive is a deleted song titled "Love Can't Be Denied", which was written by Alan Menken.

The old design of the White Wolf
Okay, let's talk about this beautiful character. The official novel described the White Wolf as a male, Simon Wells (the director of the original Balto) described the White Wolf as a male and as a symbolic character. Let's look at how this character looked in early versions.
Tumblr media
This is how it looks in the script. Pretty simple design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This design clearly was based on the script's version. Still looks masculine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here you also can see awesome storyboards by Harald Siepermann, and there already those epic moments we can see in the final film, but there also were interesting moments. How the White Wolf gently comforts Balto, how there's symbolic moment — in the beginning the White Wolf howls in the blizzard among tiny sunrises (or light of lantern) before interaction with despaired Balto, while in the end of this scene Balto embraces his wolf ancestory and howls in the same pose after the White Wolf disapperas in the wind, but among calm snowstorm and under the sun. Yep, more hints that the White Wolf wasn't real, but a metaphor of Balto's wolf half, his true self. And another design by Harald Siepermann. The White Wolf looks pretty old and severe for sure.
Tumblr media
And probably exactly this design became the base for this one in storyboards.
Tumblr media
So, yes, the White Wolf from the original Balto was always a male. And a metaphor.
P.s. By the way, you can notice that in both the movie, the script and in the novel Balto feels and shows fear and shame during his first meet with the White Wolf. So, this one fact immediately debunks the idea of the White Wolf being Balto's parent. Balto doesn't know this wolf. Not to mention, how the White Wolf is absolutely silent, and that Simon Wells himself joked in interview "If it was really his dad, why didn't the old man help him drag the antitoxin up the cliff?". The script also confirms the White Wolf being a male.

as a kid, my favorite fairytale was the Snow Queen, so naturally when Frozen came out I loved it (not as much now as obviously the market is oversaturated with it lmao) but I also was sad we missed out on a proper Disney Villain Snow Queen character more true to the character in the og story- so I’ve always loved the early concepts of Elsa, specifically the fluffier design by Harald Siepermann. Here’s the two designs in my style!

Herman van Veen
Bloesem
@ 1972 French Pressing
***
Bloesem is the sixth studio album by Herman van Veen , published in 1972. The album did not feature single songs.
Hermannus Jantinus (Herman) van Veen ( Utrecht , March 14, 1945 ) is a Dutch performing artist , writer , composer , director , musician , actor and presenter . He has been trained as a violinist , singer and music pedagogue . In addition, he is an activist for the rights of the child .
Herman van Veen grew up as the only boy in a working-class family (his father was a setter at Het Parool ) and studied violin , voice and music pedagogy at the Utrecht Conservatory . During his studies in Utrecht, Herman van Veen played the violin in the Utrecht Student Choir and Orchestra .
In 1965 he made his theater debut with the musical-clownish solo program 'Harlekijn', together with Laurens van Rooyen and Erik van der Wurff , among others . Since then he travels around the world and plays his performances in five languages. Partly after a request from UNICEF Nederland and the Hague Residentie Orkest , in 1976 Van Veen wrote a theater performance about the courageous Waterland Duck Alfred J. Kwak . A picture book was produced in 1979 with illustrations by Annet Kossen . In 1987 Alfred J. Kwak became a cartoon character, designed by the German illustrator and character designer Harald Siepermann . From this, in 1989 a 52-part animated series was made in Japan that was to be seen worldwide.
For years he was a volunteer, board member and benevolent ambassador for UNICEF Netherlands . He also founded several organizations, including the Colombine Foundation , the Alfred Jodocus Kwak Foundation , the Roos Foundation , the Herman van Veen Foundation and Lot's Foundation . All these organizations are committed to and pay attention to the rights of the child through knowledge transfer and modest projects in developing countries and Europe.
Herman van Veen is a member of many committees of recommendation, including Utrecht Student Choir and Orchestra (USKO), Children's Rights on Nature , Musicians without Borders and Children of Mother Earth Foundation . He is also a member of the Raad van Beheer Werkhuisje Wim Kan and is an ambassador for the Music in the Middle East Foundation .

someone made an instagram account for the art of the late Harald Siepermann!
https://www.instagram.com/haraldsiepermann/
to find that account was such a nice surprise. he was an amazing character designer and storyboard artist from germany. He passed away in 2013, that was also the year I made my A-level and the animation school in Hamburg where he was a docent was my dream place to study but sadly it closed down soon after his passing.

Ask blog is up and running!
This is an original piece of concept art from Harald Siepermann! You can clearly see the base characteristics of the weasels’ designs in him.
Did you know the weasels were created to be a negative inversion of the seven dwarfs from Snow White?
My headcanon is Smart Ass is Doc, turning Doc’s wise expertise into a sarcastic know-it-all persona, and the two even share a malaproper habit. Wheezy was a name considered for Sneezy in the drafts, and Psycho’s straight jacket is reflective of Dopey’s oversized robes. (This leaves, more off-canonly, Stupid and Greasy as Happy and Sleepy, most likely? Which is a stretch, but still works.)
Who were those cousins, I wonder...
