Redblacks chart new direction following the firing of Paul LaPolice
Ottawa Redblacks general manager Shawn Burke offered nothing but kind words for outgoing head coach Paul LaPolice Monday but felt a change was necessary. Burke won’t get much argument from Redblacks fans on that score. The bleak numbers speak for themselves. The Redblacks sit dead last in the CFL with a 3-11 record, including an 0-6 mark at TD Place. They rank last in points per game (19.5) and in offensive touchdowns (21) in those 14 games. Overall, during LaPolice’s tenure, the Redblacks were 6-22. They’ve also lost 21 of their last 22 games at TD Place. While former special teams coordinator Bob Dyce will now take the reins as interim head coach, Burke says he enjoyed a "true partnership" with LaPolice. Burke delivered the news to LaPolice during a "15-20 minute" conversation following the loss to the Lions. It was, however, an intriguing dynamic in that Burke didn’t hire his own head coach. LaPolice was brought in to replace the original Redblacks coach, Rick Campbell, in December 2019 by the former general manager, Marcel Desjardins. In turn, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group fired Desjardins in October 2021, replacing him with Burke. OSEG president and CEO Mark Goudie, who was also on hand at Monday’s press conference, pledged his continued support for Burke in leading the football operation. Goudie alluded to losing quarterback Jeremiah Massoli to a broken leg in the fifth game of the season, which was a blow to a "fragile team." Goudie praised the fans for continuing to showcase that Ottawa is "a football town," but he also dismissed reports that the organization didn’t make the coaching move earlier as a way of keeping costs down. Goudie means people stay in their own lanes. He insists all the football decisions are in Burke’s hands. As for what has gone so badly wrong on the field this season, the general manager suggests that one loss simply builds upon another and another. And so on. Burke says he’s not about to make massive changes to the roster in the final four games of the season. When the team returns to the field Thursday to prepare for Monday’s game against the Montreal Alouettes, he says the mindset will be about finishing as strong as possible. It will be a "proving ground," part of the evaluation process leading up to the 2023 season. Burke wanted to give LaPolice a fair shot at working his way out of the early season struggles but felt making the move now was key in trying to change the mindset of the players. As bizarre as it seems, the Redblacks still have a remote chance of making the playoffs. They have two games remaining against both the Alouettes (7-7) and Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-10) in the weak East Division.

The Saint: The Work of Art (2.7, ITC, 1963)
"Mère Lafond, I think it might be wiser if we were to co-operate."
"Ohh, you have changed, my disreputable buccaneer, co-operate!"
"Yes, but in this case it would be better."
"In this case, I go home. My cat is better company than this!"
#the saint#the work of art#1963#itc#leslie charteris#harry w. junkin#peter yates#roger moore#yolande turner#alex scott#martin benson#john bailey#robert cawdron#manning wilson#hamilton dyce#hazel hughes#neville becker#miki iveria#anne sharp#tom naylor#june smith#a curious case this‚ moreso for the behind the scenes elements; all the early Saint episodes were directly adapted (to greater or lesser#degrees of faithfulness) from Charteris' own Saint novels and‚ in particular‚ the many short stories he wrote featuring the character. this#is based on a short story which concerns the Spanish Civil War (current affairs when the story was written); in adapting it for 60s tv the#writers updated the plot to be about the Algerian war of independence from France (timely stuff and a subject touched on by previous ITC#serials like The 4 Just Men). but although part of the first shooting block‚ and so probably shot in 61 or perhaps early 62‚ this was one#of the episodes held over to form part of s2 in '63; by which time the conflict was over and the OAS (referenced several times in dialogue)#had been rendered largely obsolete by the arrests and killings of most major operatives. for an episode steeped in current affairs it does#it's damndest to remain apolitical (outside of being a plot device‚ the Algerian war is never really commented on) and sees Simon reconnect#with Cawdron's Sgt Luduc and his boss Quercy (recast since s1s Covteous Headsman; Manning Wilson is sadly less fun than Eugene Deckers was)

The Hidden Truth 1.1 Cause of Death (16th July 1964); written by Martin Woodhouse; dir. Lionel Harris.  Featuring regulars Alexander Knox, James Maxwell, Elizabeth Weaver & George Moon, with guests Derrick Sherwin & Ellen McIntosh, Dyson Lovell, Hamilton Dyce, Brian Badcoe & Stanley Lloyd.
“Well, I’d really like to know what you think - were those wounds caused by glass or weren’t they?”
A tramp stumbles on the body of a lonely old man, found, with a lacerated neck, close to his crashed car.  Inspector Hollin (Hamilton Dyce) investigates and suspicion falls on the man’s son-in-law Roger Maitland (Derrick Sherwin), an ambitious, career-minded young man, putting strain on his marriage to wife Jean (Ellen McIntosh). The pair are beneficiaries of the victim’s £27,000 life insurance policy - money they’re badly in need of.  Dr Mossford (Brian Badcoe), concerned by the nature of the lacerations, asks Professor Lazard and Dr Fox for help in establishing the cause of death.  It looks like a straightforward car crash, so Lazard sends Dr Fox to take a look - but there are several different possible explanations and it turns out to be “more of a whatdunnit than a whodunnit” with “no simple solution”.
Tumblr media
Initially scheduled for Thursday 9th of July at 8pm, The Hidden Truth was one of many ITV shows hit by a technicians’ strike.  It was especially unfortunate as the original publicity & schedule details confused critics (and no doubt viewers), robbing the show of its allotted space in some papers.  (The Guardian‘s TV critic, duly tuning in on the 9th, found themselves watching Our Man at St Mark’s & shrugged and left it at that.)
It was re-scheduled for the 13th, (three days before the second episode “The Shape”), but wound up going out instead of “The Shape” on the 16th July & causing further confusion.  (IMDB, even now, gives its broadcast date as the 9th & its episode summary as that of The Shape!)
In the Daily Herald (July 17th), Dennis Potter found it better than he had anticipated, although thought that might only be because he’d just had to sit through HMS Paradise “the worst comedy show I have ever seen,” but “Even so, this drama about pathologists did not begin to live up to its billing as “the most unusual series ever shown on T.V”.  It was as “usual” as a wet bank holiday...
A close-up of blood cells under the microscope gave us a reassuring flash of authenticity... But a drama series has to drag in irritating little irrelevancies to get us interested in characters likely to pop up again in the next episode.
About the same standard as No Hiding Place, this new venture fills an hour of screen time without making it seem like two hours. And that, by current ITV standards, must pass as a sort of praise.“
The Stage, on the 23rd, was still confused: “THE first of this new series last Friday [sic] was, for some reason, not the advertised episode, but with the same principal characters.  The Hidden Truth is there to be uncovered, I imagine, by the Department of Forensic Medicine which forms the background of the series.
This was, on the surface, a fairly run-of-the-mill whodunnit by Martin Woodhouse, but it turned out that it was really more of a whatdunnit ...  Alexander Knox was authentic and efficient in the part of Professor Lazard and James Maxwell looked splendidly scientific and full of authority as the forensic expert, Dr. Fox.  As the young man suspected of murder, Derrick Sherwin gave a strong, well-defined performance, but Ellen Macintosh as his wife seemed constricted and stilted almost until her last scene.
Elizabeth Weaver was given little scope as Dr. Coliton, but perhaps she will have more consideration in later scripts.
Generally well directed by Lionel Harris, it was quite a promising production.  When shall we see The Shape I wonder.”
Meanwhile, the Crewe Chronicle (July 25th) felt “the first of Rediffusion’s dabbles in forensic science… looked fairly promising, although” [the recent switch to 50 minute episodes for drama series evidently being a bugbear] “stretching it out for sixty minutes is rather like putting lead weights round the feet of the cast and then expecting them to rumba.  But view on regardless, bearing in mind that all thirteen stories are pure fiction though they are presented with the documentary-maker’s eye for minute detail.”

10 Facts About Me
Rule: Write ten facts about yourself then tag ten people you’d like to get to know better. (the facts can be anything)
tagged by @cutthroat-cutiepie
When I was 5-7, I was obsessed with Ancient Egypt. I read every book in the children’s section of my town library, and then all the adult books. I was dead set on being an Egyptologist and going to the University of Egyptology in Cairo. My parents told me no (because Egypt was dangerous). I cried. A lot. (I still am planning to be an Egyptologist).
My last name means ‘mountain splitter’, which is such a dwarvish-type name, I love it. (Dwarves are my all time favorite mythological creatures.)
I saw the last game played at the original Yankee Stadium.
I have two guinea pigs, who came with the names Pepe and Roni (pepperoni). They were going to be named Fezziwig and John Dyce after Charles Dickens characters, but too bad for us.
I sit with the aforementioned guinea pigs when I do my homework. They like to jump on my lap and run across my chromebook’s keyboard to get my attention.
I am both a Gryffindor, and a Gemini and I have been told that that is an awful combination.
My favorite book ever is probably The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls by Claire Legrand.
I’m a pretty decent pianist who is best at playing Chopin, but I love Mozart best (I don’t care how cliche that is). Also Rachmaninoff is awesome but if he were still around I’d cut off a few of his fingers so he’d understand how us with normal sized hands feel trying to play his music.
When I was in kindergarten I watched a couple Smithsonian documentaries on forensics. For years after, I had to jump to get onto my bed at night so that the serial killer under my bed wouldn’t reach out and grab my ankles.
The most disappointing part of Hamilton, in my opinion, was that the Baron von Steuben wasn’t in it. Seriously. He’s great. Look him up.

[ ] K25 [ ] A [ ] 1007-1873( 2004) 06-0038-07

Queen Elizabeth II's coffin takes long road through Scotland
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II’s flag-draped coffin was driven slowly through the Scottish countryside Sunday from her beloved Balmoral Castle to the Scottish capital of Edinburgh in a solemn, regal procession.
The hearse led a seven-car cortege from Balmoral, where the queen died Thursday at the age of 96, for a six-hour journey through Scottish towns to Holyroodhouse Palace in Edinburgh.
The procession was a huge event for Scotland as the United Kingdom mourns its longest-reigning monarch, the only one most Britons have ever known, for several days.
The packed Royal Mile in Edinburgh fell silent as the hearse carrying the queen arrived. However, as the convoy faded from view, the crowd spontaneously began clapping.
When the hearse arrived at Holyroodhouse, members of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, dressed in green tartan kilts, carried the coffin past the queen's three youngest children — Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward — into the throne room, where it was to remain until Monday afternoon so staff could pay their respects.
King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will travel to Edinburgh on Monday to join another solemn procession carrying the queen's coffin to St. Giles Cathedral on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.
The cortege's first stop was in Ballater, where residents regard the royal family as neighbours. Hundreds of people stood motionless. Some people placed flowers in front of the hearse.
The entourage was treated with respect in every Scottish town and village People mostly stood silently; some clapped politely, while others pointed their phone cameras at passing cars.
The cortege passed through locations rich in House of Windsor history along the way. Among them was Dyce, where the queen formally opened the United Kingdom's first North Sea oil pipeline in 1975, and Fife, near St. Andrews University, where her grandson Prince William, now the Prince of Wales, studied and met his future wife, Catherine.
The queen’s eldest son, King Charles III, was formally proclaimed the new monarch in the rest of the United Kingdom: Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It came a day after England's pompous accession ceremony.
A protester appeared with a sign condemning imperialism and urging leaders to abolish the monarch just before the proclamation was read in Edinburgh on Sunday.
Even so, there was some booing in Edinburgh when Joseph Morrow finished his proclamation with “God save the king!” Ann Hamilton, 48, was irritated by this.
Still, it was a sign of how some people, including those in Britain's former colonies, are grappling with the monarchy's legacy — and its future.
Proclamations were read earlier in the day in other parts of the Commonwealth, including Australia and New Zealand. Even as he grieved for his late mother, Charles went to work at Buckingham Palace, meeting with the secretary-general and other Commonwealth envoys.
Albanese, who supports an Australian republic, said on Sunday that now was not the time for a change, but for paying tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
There were hints of possible family reconciliation among the grief that engulfed the House of Windsor. Prince William and his brother Harry, along with their wives, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, surprised mourners near Windsor Castle on Saturday with a surprise joint appearance.
The queen's coffin was making its way back to the capital via a circuitous route. After being flown to London on Tuesday, the coffin will be moved from Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday, where it will lie in state until a state funeral at Westminster Abbey on September 19.
Locals in Ballater, according to Barr, regard the royal family as neighbours. Taylor was overcome with emotion as the hearse drove through Ballater.

Redblacks' Lewis Ward goes from security guard to kicking in Grey Cup

Redblacks' Lewis Ward goes from security guard to kicking in Grey Cup
EDMONTON — In a lot of ways it was exactly what Lewis Ward had always wanted — to be on the sidelines during a Grey Cup game feeling the rush of a championship moment.
Except, it wasn’t how he had imagined it would be taking place.
During last year’s thrilling Grey Cup game in Ottawa, Ward was a security guard. He had picked up the gig during his time at the University of Ottawa as a way to help pay some bills.
“I was on the field. I was so close to the action,” Ward said. “I saw the interception by Toronto at the end of the game. I saw the fumble get returned back. I was actually on that sideline. I got to experience that as close as anyone could be.”
He watched the players in warmup. He dreamt about what it would be like to be preparing for the game like they all were.
Now one year later, Ward is getting ready for the game, and will be back on the sidelines at a Grey Cup — this time though, he’ll be doing what he does best, kicking field goals for the Ottawa Redblacks in the biggest game of his life.
“I still have to pinch myself to believe this is all really happening,” Ward said in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Calgary Stampeders.
From 2013 until the end of the 2017 season, Ward was the field goal kicker at the University of Ottawa. He finished his career with the Gee-Gees having made 89 consecutive field goals – the most in program and conference history and second-most in USports history.
Despite his success, Ward went undrafted in the 2017 CFL draft. He went back to school for a fifth and final year before the Redblacks came knocking at the end of that football season.
“We had watched his draft film and I had him graded as the highest-rated kicker,” special teams coach Bob Dyce said. “We had worked him out. He did a great job. When we needed a new kicker, we brought him in.”
Ottawa’s kicker Brett Maher headed south to the NFL, at the end of the 2017 season, opening up the door for Ward to shine. And he did. Ward was perfect on field goals in the pre-season and has never looked back.
“I had that confidence that I was going to be successful if I got a shot,” Ward said. “I consider myself a cool, calm, collected guy. I try not to let things faze me.”

Setting records along the way
Since making the move from university kicker to security guard, and now pro kicker, Ward has been nothing short of sensational. His rookie year in the CFL has been remarkable.
His record-setting in the 2018 CFL season started early. During a game in late July, Ward tied an Ottawa football team record by kicking seven field goals in a game.
A couple of weeks later in August, he set a new CFL rookie record by kicking 22 consecutive field goals. Then in September, that streak continued when he set the all-time CFL single-season record by kicking his 33rd consecutive field goal.
But the big record was still looming.
On Oct. 19 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Ward broke the professional football record, breaking Adam Vinatieri’s record from the NFL with his 45th straight field goal.
“I honestly had no idea until it happened,” Ward said with a grin. “My parents were in the crowd that day too. It was pretty special.”
Ward finished the season making 51 of 52 field goals.
On Thursday night, Ward will up for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie Award and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player Award.

Soccer roots
Ward was born and raised in England. He grew up there until his family moved to Kingston, Ont., just before he was beginning high school.
Footy has always been a part of his family.
Ward is a Liverpool fan while his dad roots for Birmingham — they have lively discussion over it.
Ward played soccer growing up, naturally.
“Since I was little, my dad said I could kick a soccer ball anywhere on the field and do what I wanted with it,” Ward said. “I guess it’s kind of paying off now.”
Ward says his parents are huge football fans now, attending nearly every home game in Ottawa and making some road trips for games throughout the season as well. They’ll be at the game Sunday in Edmonton.
The 26-year-old kicker is back on the sidelines, ready to run out on the field this time. He says should the game come down to a last-second field goal, he’s prepared.
“I would wish we were clearly winning the game but if that were the opportunity, then I need to take it. If that’s the situation we’re in, I’ll do my best to make it happen,” Ward said.

The Brothers: Turning Point (1.6, BBC, 1972)
"I fired him for being insolent, if you really want to know."
"Why? Because he compared you with your father?"
"Oh, it's all round the depot now is it? Well you know as well as I do what my father would have done if he'd had any lip from any driver."
"Aye, he'd have thumped him."
"Then what's he complaining about?"
"He'd have thumped him, but he wouldn't have fired him."
