"The Death of BarrenClan: Part Two"
So good to see you again.
The cover art is inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts and marginalia, if you're not familiar with the style. I highly encourage you all to look it up, there are many delightful drawings.
Cypressfoot marks the second blood of BarrenClan. Oh, darling, I'm so sorry to lose you.
But we do seem to have a returning member.

"Issue #33: Hurt Me! Beat Me! Just Please Don't Leave Me!"
Thank you all for your patience while I worked on this! It's the longest issue of PATFW to date, so I hope you understand why it took me so long to produce. At the current pace it seems like issues will come out about every three weeks (or a little more), which is a bit funny to me. I called them "issues" as a reference to comic books and now look where I am. Full circle.
The boys are having a rough time of it, though, unfortunately. If it wasn't already abundantly clear, Cormorantpaw has some pretty severe abandonment and trust issues, which led to him keeping secrets from Pinepaw out of fear that he'd be left once again. But it's hard for Pinepaw to see that perspective when he's just lost his sister, and thinks that she possibly could've been saved... bad situation all around.
At least Thrasher is finally dead! That's worth celebrating, right? Both he and Crow died from a kick to the head, by the way, and the deer who killed Crow is Wild Rose's son Hyssop.

"The Death of BarrenClan: Part One"
First blood.
It'll become clear soon, but not all of Defiance is here - there are around 100 members in the group in total, and only about twenty here today. But it seems like a lot to the cats.
Also, Prowl did kill Mallowstar by snapping his neck, but I understand it may not be obvious in the art because I didn't want to look at pictures of broken necks for reference. Regardless he died near instantly.
He did his best.

"Issue #26: My Heart Is Too Heavy to Sleep"
Twenty-six issues in and the boys finally get to kiss-kiss-fall-in-love! Aw, I'm so proud of them. I struggled a bit with finding terms for dating in Warriors, since the series never has an in-between stage of friends to mates. "Together" works fine enough for me.
The idea of Pinewing and Cormorantleaf as their warrior names is one I've had for a long time, and admittedly the dumb joke about Pinepaw not knowing what pine trees are is just as old. Hey, he grew up in a wasteland! Not his fault.
It was also fun to draw Cormorantpaw's family again, I love their designs. A little more light is shed on his sordid past, but it's hard for him to talk about. It's still very fresh.
This issue is the longest one yet, so it took me awhile to make, but I like it a lot. I hope you do too.

"Issue #28: Viscera, Shiny In the Light of Day"
CW: depiction of a semi-graphic animal heart on page 8
This absolute monster of an issue is one I've been incredibly excited to get to for months now. Deepdark is a very important character, as the primary antagonist, and he's finally gotten a real spotlight on him. At this point I'm really just writing original xenofiction too, which is fun. Yeah, this a Warrior cats story, you're getting a deer murder cult and you'll be happy with it.
One thing that I think it important to make clear is that Longest-Claws was not the "leader of Defiance before Deepdark". He was the leader of a group that Deepdark took inspiration from and poached several of its members, but Defiance is entirely Deepdark's creation.
Also, it's nice to finally reveal that Lingonberry is just Deepdark's original name! He took on 'Deepdark' after he killed Longest-Claws. Although they are not separate characters, I'll be tagging posts that refer to Deepdark's past with just 'Lingonberry' so as to not spoil any future readers who may be looking through the tag.
The animals featured in the big panels on page 2 and page 9 are cameos from the PATFW Discord, many of which are Defiance fan-characters. All of the characters and their respective creators will be tagged under the cut.

"Issue #27: Little Paws Take Little Steps"
I'm glad I was finally able to call back to Issue 8, and see where Daffodilpaw has been mentally since then. As with all our apprentices, she's done some growth since then, and Slugpelt's conversation with her kids in Issue 18 affected her deeply. A concept I think is interesting but not explored enough is when someone is fully aware they have a problem, or could possibly fall into something bad, but still know they might be unable to resist it. That's what Daff is dealing with.
We've also got a follow-up on Mallowstar's discussion with Cootstorm in Issue 6. Seems like he's gotten more steadfast in his plans since then! Blacknose is a big influence on him, since she's a stone-cold badass. She doesn't take shit from anybody.
I always love drawing the BlackMallow kittens. That's a given. It was briefly mentioned in Issue 25, but Cormorantpaw loves kids, and he's great with them. He treats them with the kindness he wishes he'd been given.

"Issue #25: You Don't Speak to My Daughter That Way"
After all the intense lore and bloody excitement that's been dropped lately, I think we need a bit of a breather episode. Well, you can't exactly have a PATFW issue without some deep emotional turmoil, but regardless.
Meadowkit's sickness was mentioned briefly in Issue 22, if you don't remember. It's not fatal; but I think it's a little too icky to bring up in the comic itself (plus, the cats wouldn't know what it was). If you're interested, though, Meadowkit has a parasite, which leads to excessive tiredness and not being able to digest nutrients as well as he should. Since Meadowkit is so young, his body can't compensate as well as an adult animal.
But hey! A hug with the whole Slug family! Let's focus on that.

"Issue #24: Lost in a Haze"
Oh! What's that? Another POV? Yes, it's true! Rainhaze gets his turn in the narration. It was a lot of fun to explore his mind, though it's easy to over-write. Rainhaze is very rambly.
I also hope you enjoy getting a peek into Defiance's inner workings. I will elaborate a bit more on the branch system and hierarchy in some bonus posts eventually, but there's nothing outside the comic that's required for understanding it simply by reading the issues.
Since Rainhaze jumps around in time a lot via his scattered mental state, for ease of reading I'll just state that pages 5 & 6 take place directly after the end of Issue 24, i.e. when Rainhaze killed the fox and Ranger confronted him.

"Issue #23: Your Voice Was So Soft"
I did say we were in the darker part of the story now, so these issues may just keep being rough for a little while.
Heat stroke is very serious! Make sure to stay cool and drink plenty of water if you're outside on hot days for long periods of time, guys. Also, try to avoid getting a stress fever from discovering your grandmother's corpse if possible.
At least Pinepaw gets a little kiss. Fun fact - this was one of the first issues I ever wrote while I was planning out the story. Many other issues have filled out around it, which I think is fun.
Oh, and yeah... say hello to Rainhaze!

“Issue #22: A Favor for a Favor”
Here it finally is! You can sort of think of this issue as the mid-season finale, if the whole of PATFW was a one-season show. I have been waiting to do this one for a very long time, and I wanted to make sure it was exactly how I pictured it. There are a ton of reveals and plot progressions in this issue, so keep it all in mind as we move forward!
Also, with this issue, PATFW is officially halfway over. Can you believe that? It feels like just yesterday that I started this project.
So much to talk about, but I won’t clog up this description. I’ll at least say that Ranger and Hacksaw are some of my absolute favorite characters from this story, and I love them dearly. For clarification’s sake, Ranger is a coyote and Hacksaw is a peregrine falcon. You can now view their tags for posts I’ve made about them in the past, along with Saturn.
Dustfeather was previously completely buried, as you can see in Issue 17, but winds combined with Saturn’s burrowing exposed her body to the open, where any remaining choice meat was picked off by crows (and Saturn).
In the last panel, the flowers surrounding Deepdark are wisteria, oleander, and black lilies. All of them are poisonous to animals.

PATFW: Animal Name Systems
As more non-Clan characters get introduced to the story, I’ve been having fun coming up with the naming systems for various animals. In real life there would probably be more natural variety within a whole species, but also making up little systems is fun so I don’t care. Also, as a technical note, obviously none of these names are in “English”. They’re in whatever language animals speak. So, like, Hacksaw is not literally “hacksaw”, it’s the animal word for that object.
Cats - with the exception of warriors (who obviously have an incredibly specific naming system), cat names tend to be more loose, and can be named after many things. In general, they are shorter. House cats are also an exception, as they are named by people and so their names can be very different. Ex. Cashew, Summer, Rowan, Egret, Thrasher, Jackalope
Wolves and coyotes - like cats, wolves also have a more loose naming system. Often wolves are named after someone else, to honor them. Coyote communities are heavily linked to wolf communities, so their rules are similar. In general, they are longer. Ex. Coldbreath, Nightshade, Lucky-Foot, Antlerhorn, Ranger
Deer - deer are always named after plants. No exceptions to this. Often the plants are ones that the parents admire or enjoy. Ex. Wild Rose, Juniper, Hyssop, Maple, Lingonberry
Mountain lions - they are named after some kind of aspirational trait at birth that their parent is hoping they fulfill. Sometimes this leads to funny, ironic circumstances, but usually the kitten is shaped by their name and strives to embody it. Ex. Ferocity, Swiftness, Cunning, Power, Caution
Porcupines - for the first year of their life, porcupine kits are named after the order in which their mother gave birth to them. Ex. First, Second, Third, etc. When the porcupine has come of age, they are given their adult name. These names are short and functional, usually no more than four letters. Ex. Mud, Snap, Snow, Blue
Falcons - chicks are never given names by their parents, and are generally treated as indistinguishable when young. Once they leave the nest, falcons name themselves whatever they like. Frequently these names are inspired by human artifacts, as falcons (and many other bird cultures, as well as raccoons) value their liminal relationship to humans. Ex. Hacksaw, Highway, Black-Wing, Perils, Artemis
Bears - at birth, bears are given short, silly names, meant to be inconsequential. Ex. Fuzz, Seed, Bug, Baby. When they come of age, they are given an adult name by the eldest bear, whether it’s a large group or just a family. These names are structured as some kind of brag about the individual’s qualities, to impress others and display dominance. They are composed of two words in the trait separated by a hyphen. Ex. Longest-Claws, Fiercest-Roar, Strongest-Jaw, Thickest-Pelt. However, if the bear is disliked or considered weak, they can be also be called a version of this structure that is an insult. Ex. Dullest-Mind, Weakest-Strike, Softest-Heart. The greatest shame of all, though, is an adult bear forced to keep their childhood name.

The dream curse ™️ has fallen on me. It was. I was watching Asphodelpaw and Pinepaw ice skating on a cookie. Then deepdark came in and was like. "I'm so much better than you." And they were like. "Prove it."" He Said "okay" spun toward them while t-posing then face planted And while Pinepaw And Asphodelpaw were laughing deepdark backfliped onto his hooves And tapped asphodelpaw And she fell back through the ice.
This is actually my original draft for Asphodelpaw's death scene. How did you get access to my notes?!?
Tumblr media
My goodness, mysterious armadillo murderer! Administator is a cool name, though.
I hate to break it to you, but a smug weasel with outside knowledge of the story? That's just me.
Tumblr media
Okay this one made me laugh out loud. Do NOT speak to me anymore. Goodbye change the world my final message
Tumblr media
Fractal paws Asphodelkit... that is spooky. I'm glad my weird comic could claim a spot in your brain!
Tumblr media
Hilarious considering that PATFW is like, explicitly set in Nebraska. I wish I could've experienced those voices though.
Tumblr media
This might as well be a dream. That's honestly, really good poetry though?? I'm adding the fanfic tag just for that.
Tumblr media
I love imagining a "Hacksaw who looks more like Ranger" either as an actual coyote with her colors, or a falcon who just has his colors.
