i wonder which of the h2o girls would be most likely to tell their parents their secret? most of the conflict in the show is centered around the girls protecting their mermaid status, but i wonder what would have went down had they ever disclosed, and how their folks would have taken it

i like to headcanon that emma probably told her folks that she had a tail before they went travelling prior to the events of season 3. i think maybe she would have had lewis on hand to explain the science-y side of things and assuage their fears. even tho don sertori has some cute moments with cleo, and rikki's dad terry has some half-hearted character development, emma is definitely more close with her family than the other girls. i feel like her parents really love and trust her and, after some persuasion, would be convinced not to contact the relevant medical professionals and keep her secret safe

after emma, i think cleo would be likely to eventually share the secret with her dad. she does get closer to him as the series progresses, and i think he'd be less inclined to have the country's top marine biologist on speed dial than emma's bougie ass parents? he does show genuine support towards cleo at times, especially after he's forced to step up when cleo's mum leaves in season 2. i reckon it would take him some time to come to terms with the news, but eventually he would accept her, and probably agree to help her hide the secret from kim and her colleagues at work

i just... can't see rikki telling terry her secret. at all. their relationship is rocky in season 1, and then they have some contrived sort of development in season 2, but he is notably absent in season 3, even when rikki's personal and professional life is falling apart. he just isn't the source of stability and support that emma's parents are to her, even that don is to cleo once or twice a season. if he did ever find out, accidentally or otherwise, i reckon it could either make or break his relationship with rikki: either they would be forced to come together and rikki would be able lean on him more, or he would be totally flummoxed and unable to deal with the new reality

i also can't see bella telling her folks about her tail. like if tiny nine year old bella wasn't comfy sharing her secret with her parents, adult bella for sure wouldn't bring herself to do the same. can we talk about this small child not being able to share such a huge part of her life with her caregivers, and all that implies?

as for charlotte, i'm honestly not sure why she never shared the news with her mum in the first place? we have no reason to believe she and annette aren't close, iirc the first time she showed lewis her tail was in a very public place with plenty of bystanders, there's a whole episode centered around her reckless lack of discretion... why did she never tell annette her secret? i feel like it would have been a great full circle moment for them, for annette to learn more about her mother's past, especially since charlotte cares so much about her grandma's legacy

anyway i feel like 'the girls finally tell their families that they're mermaids' could have been a really interesting twist had the writers not made a balls of season 3. it would have really subverted viewers' expectations, and the girls would still have to keep the secret from school staff, employers, etc. so the overarching conflict of the show would remain the same. it would have also made an interesting parallel with louise, julia, and gracie: the secret isolated them from their families and tore them apart. for the next generation, it would bring them closer together.
