Damn it, Avery!
Tumblr media
"So yeah, Mark notices things, but he doesn’t need to be in full observation mode (Callie would say he’s nosy, but what does she know?) to notice Avery fidgeting in his seat in front of him as Kepner joins her paramedic and the pastor and the ceremony starts."
A silly little AU, because we deserved to have Mark react to Japril's shenanigans.
___
If the trauma surgery thing doesn’t pan out, Kepner should be an event planner.
Mark’s not usually a wedding fan, but when you’re engaged to Lexie Grey and have been planning your own wedding for the past months, you start noticing things you didn’t use to. For example, as he’s watching Kepner walk down the aisle of a carefully-decorated barn, he makes a mental note of asking her where she got these little mint-to-be favors – he actually thinks they’re kind of lame, but Lexie squealed when she saw them and thought they were cute, and what Lexie Grey wants for their wedding, Lexie Grey will get.
So yeah, Mark notices things, but he doesn’t need to be in full observation mode (Callie would say he’s nosy, but what does she know?) to notice Avery fidgeting in his seat in front of him as Kepner joins her paramedic and the pastor and the ceremony starts.
And it’s funny, because Mark used to think (still does, if he’s being honest), that Avery and Kepner would have made a decent couple.

Intern Lounge Blues (Mark Sloan x Reader) *SMUT*
Tumblr media
a/n: literally so happy my parents nicknamed me lexxe (same pronunciation) bc it allows me to indulge in slexie. kind of a prequel to Never, which I am editing!! :) Thank you so, so much for 800 followers!!!
tags: SMUT, shameless, self-indulgent smut for this damn man, praise kink, kissing, fingering, dirty talk, AU: Mark Sloan survives, mild begging
summary: Sloan sure does know his way around a woman.
Mark Sloan is a god among men. You were more than sure of that.
As an intern, you'd been too busy with school to go searching for one-night stands or even long-term sexual relationships. Now you were pleased with that decision because Mark Sloan, the long-term plastic surgeon at Grey Memorial, is breaking a long dry spell and the wait was now worth it.
His hands grip at your thighs, and you're firmly seated on his lap, facing him and grinding against his hard erection which strains against his scrub pants, you move your hands away from the back of his neck, moving them down to take off the scrub top that sticks close to his torso, he chuckles lowly, grabbing a hold of your hands before they are able to grip at the fabric.
"Gonna need you to be patient, let me take care of you." Shit, what have you done right to deserve this? It's a question that is cut off by his lips on your neck, soft bites painting the flesh as he pulls off your scrub top. You gasp at the frozen air of the locker room, his warm breath on your skin contrasting it strikingly. His warm hands travel the length of your body, squeezing at the flesh of your ass, before slipping under the waistband of your scrub pants and your underwear.
You release a whine, almost silent, but Mark picks up on it, his cock hardening against your pussy, and his skin sets yours on fire. This isn’t what you’d heard of being in store for you when you slept with Mark Sloan, brilliant man-whore plastic surgeon of Grey Memorial Hospital, this was tender, you lift your hips as his fingers slip inside of your cunt, which is dripping and desperate for him, his thumb quickly teases at your clit, you gasp loudly, the sensitive organ throbbing at the ministrations, you watch as Mark leers over you, his gaze burning into your skin.
You craved more of him, his fingers quickly becoming not enough for you, he leans down to kiss you, his free hand grasping at the waistband of your pants and underwear, pulling them off as the wet sounds of Mark’s fingers languidly fucking you, slow and talented, become louder in the locker room, the only other noises to drown it out being your moans and yelps, quiet and controlled. You’re completely naked and at the mercy of this amazingly capable man who stands over you, smiling as he slowly leans down to your neck, his teeth biting softly into the flesh, leaving a bruise for future you to worry about, he sucks on the spot a bit before beginning to kiss you, trailing the kisses down the flesh of your body. “Mark,” You whine softly as he bites at the flesh of your thighs, “Come on, Fuck me, Mark…” You hear him chuckle deeply, he licks a stripe up the slit of your pussy, sucking softly on your clit for just a moment, releasing it from his lips with a soft pop. You whine softly as look up to find Mark sliding his scrub top off, leaving you to stare at the absolute Adonis of a man who you were lucky enough to have gotten into this situation with. Your eyes were full of adoration, which was something he was all too aware of… It reminded him of- You notice Mark shake his head as he smiles at you, sliding the rest of his scrubs off as you unclasp your bra, getting up just a bit to take Mark’s face in your hand, kissing him softly, intimately on the lips. It’s a small gesture but he seems to take it for all that it is. It’s oddly enough, the most personal he’s gotten with sex in the past few years.
You both seem to just watch each other for a few seconds, that is until Mark comes in close to you once more, cock pressing against your stomach, rock hard as you pump it softly with your hand, “Oh shit, love the way you… The way you do that. Keep going, sweetheart.” You giggle lovingly at his request as you pump it, faster and harder, his lips meeting yours over and over, “So good, shit.” Praise falls from his lips as he continues to kiss you, until you pull away, standing up and smirking, “Come on, Mark, fuck me.” He nods, pulling your body close to his, your chest pressed against his, his rock-hard cock pressing into your stomach, “You want me to fuck you, sweetheart?” You nod as he pulls you away just slightly, lining the length of his cock, dripping with precum, against your wet cunt. “Then beg.” You roll your eyes, bringing his face to yours, kissing him, hot and heavy before you pull away just slightly, “Mark Sloan, fuck me, fuck me better than you’ve fucked any of the other interns this year and I will be the best surgical assistant any of the attendings have ever seen, now come on… Fuck me!” He chuckles, whispering deeply into your ear, “You’ll get better at the begging thing, babe.” He then slowly eases inside of you, slow and powerful thrusts, causing you to gasp out, you’re close, with all of the foreplay it’s not long before the tension snaps inside of you, wading you into wave after wave of ecstatic pleasure. Mark continues his thrusting, hitting every spot inside of you while rubbing at your clit, “Sh-Shit Mark, fuck!” He chuckles deeply as his hips stutter a bit, he’s getting close, you both know it. Your moans only spur him closer to the finish line as he kisses your skin, before pulling out, spilling his seed out onto your stomach. He kisses your forehead softly and helps you wipe yourself off before pulling his pants back on and sitting next to you for a moment, the quiet allowing what just happened to soak in heavily for the both of you.
You vowed you’d never, ever do something this monumentally stupid. Yet you did, and you couldn’t find it in yourself to regret it.

Where We Might End Up - Lexie Grey x OC fanfic    Chapter 9: The McHell Week: The Blue Corner
Tumblr media
Three days had passed since the merger between Seattle Grace and Mercy West. The only people thrilled with the merger were Richard, Callie, and the Mercy West hospital staff. Seattle Grace personnel, specifically its surgical residents, felt threatened. Looking at the orange scrubs-wearing residents, they came up with a plan. - To take all the surgeries from them as they can.
On her first day, Callie felt ecstatic. Working back at Seattle Grace meant being close to both her girlfriend and her best friend. As the days went on, Callie had understood why Derek dreaded the merger. Before, she assumed he was just overreacting. -The fact that the merger was Richard's idea. Callie, then, had been pissed at Derek. Callie had considered the merger a blessing, but after working for three days with these maniacal surgical residents competing for surgeries, the blessing was quickly turning into a curse. The ecstasy she felt was now coming down.
Morning Hospital Lobby
Alex and Charles were scheduled on Callie's service. The two residents quarreled about who's going to hold the charts. - A typical day now when the residents fight over for just holding the charts. Callie narrowed her eyes, staring blankly away from the two residents arguing in front of her. She rolled her eyes as she turned towards the counter, reaching for the charts. As their voices grew louder, Callie got more annoyed. She gave charts on both residents, slamming it on their hands. Callie gave them a challenge – whoever determined the better diagnosis gets to be in the surgery with her. If no one got it right, she'll do the surgery alone.
Callie narrowed her eyes in frustration as she walked with them through the lobby. Maybe she should not have started that little competition. It was still morning, but Callie's energy for the day was already at a dangerous limit. The residents got more winded. And it's more annoying, more frustrating, and more exhausting. Callie sighed heavily, trying to walk faster now, keeping the two residents away from her. At least now, she's not hearing those two argue for the nth time.
Eric went inside the hospital, carrying his overnight bag. Two days before the merger, he went to LA for a consult - a personal request from Addison Montgomery. Eric would have been back at Seattle during the merger, but he stayed a couple of days more. His phone rang on his last day - a phone call from Derek Shepherd, asking him when he'll be back.
Eric stopped as he saw Callie walked past the lobby floor with Alex and someone wearing an orange scrub.
Callie turned towards Eric. It was a while before she realized that it's Eric, beaming at her. As she recognized her friend, her narrowed eyes relaxed and widened. Her grouchy face went calm. Callie grinned widely, copying him.
Callie ran towards Eric, leaving behind the two residents.
"Welcome back!" Callie greeted as she stood in front of him.
"What did I miss?" He adjusted his bag on his shoulder, glancing at the orange absurdness behind Callie.
Callie followed his stare leading to the two residents. She groaned, "Uh... Merger? Ring any bell?" Callie looked back at Eric. Her mouth slacked and eyes widened. Eric tilted his head and pursed his lips, trying to remember, "What?! Are you kidding me?"
He smiled tentatively and grew as the answer sank in, "Fuckin' hell! Yes," He laughed and stifled it, noticing Callie's reaction, "I don't - sorry. Just -" Eric stared at Callie as she frowned, crossing her arms. "I need to go change. Derek's been ringing me nuts since LA... thinking I might abandon him for Addison." He chuckled, "You're busy. I'll leave you to it, then."
Callie yanked him back as he walked away, "Don't leave me with these fools," She turned around and pointed at the two residents, "You two, go find something to do at the pit!" She yelled. She faced Eric, plucking the bag off his hand.
"But you said we're..." Charles yelled back. Callie cut him off.
"Leave those charts at the nurses' station," She stressed, pulling Eric beside her and holding his arm as they walk together. Eric chuckled as he walked with Callie.
Attendings' Lounge
"Look who's back," Callie singsonged as they went inside the lounge. Derek looked at the door as they made in. Callie moved towards the couch and relaxed.
"How's LA?" Derek inquired, glancing behind as he poured the coffee in his mug.
Eric stared at Derek as he responded, "Un–ee-ventful," Eric turned away and moved towards his locker.
"Hmmm," Derek paused. "not what I heard..." Derek continued with a smirk.
Eric darted at him and asked, "Addie told on you?" He put his bag inside the locker.
"No. Sam Bennett told me," Derek answered, staring at Callie. Callie resolved to remain silent and to keep her regular teasing at a minimum towards Eric. He just came back from LA. Callie won't tease him - not yet. Derek smiled at the sight.
"Damn it! Sam," Eric murmured.
Derek stepped closer to Callie to ask why she's being quiet, "Hmmm," He uttered as he waited for her to say anything, but Callie sat quietly at the couch, massaging her temple.
"Don't." She warned, raising her index finger in front of him, "I'm having my peace and quiet here, Derek," Callie continued, leaning back in a more comfortable position, resting her head on the sofa and closing her eyes.. Derek held his hands up in surrender as he stepped backward.
Eric asked, facing his locker, "Where are the charts?"
"Lexie has them," Derek answered, staring at Callie. He looked at Eric and went on, "She has them. I asked her to assist you so... you know."
Eric narrowed his eyes and shook his head as he replied, "No, I don't know," Eric paused arching an eyebrow as he pondered. Eric's mouth fell open as he realized what Derek meant, "Unbelievable." Eric turned back and looked at Derek as he walked out of the lounge, "I-I am nice," He added as he followed Derek. "I have been nice!" Eric exclaimed, leaning on the doorway and craning his neck as Derek walked along the hall. Eric paused and breathed in. He went back inside the lounge and looked at Callie smiling at him, amused, "No one really noticed?"
Callie snorted, "I'll believe it when I see it," She spoke. Callie stood up and poured herself coffee from the coffeemaker. She can feel Eric's stare. Callie glanced behind her, seeing him narrowing his eyes at her, "W-what?!"
"Doesn't take you long, huh?" Eric added as he walked inside the shower room to change.
Callie chortled as she faced the counter.
- - - - -
Lexie stepped in front the attending's lounge, carrying the charts for Derek's patients - Now, Eric's patients. Lexie saw Derek on the way, informing her that Eric was inside the lounge. She didn't know what to do - if she'll wait for him outside or go in. She fidgeted in front of the door before deciding to open it. This was the first time she went inside the lounge. So she slowly walked in, feeling like she was barging into someone else's room. She hoped that there were no attendings inside - except for the one she's looking for, of course. She went in and saw Callie.
Callie stared at Lexie as she looked around, searching for the neurosurgeon, "Hey Lexie," Callie said.
"Hi... uhm... Have you seen..." Callie pointed at the shower room, "Oh - okay. I'll..." Lexie staggered to go in further. She was nervous. This will be the first time she'll work with Eric after George's funeral. She was avoiding him then - after Eric drove her home. After that, her father got hospitalized and Eric left for LA. There were no chances of them interacting or working together, not until Derek asked Eric to cover for him. Timely, she was scheduled on Neuro.
Lexie stood at the door, thinking about what she would tell him.
"Dr. Shepherd asked me to work with you... We've been working for this patient for..." She whispered to herself, "No. I... I'm not avoiding you, I'm just too busy..." She chuckled, "... no I... I'm not saying that..."
Callie looked at her as she noticed Lexie talking to herself. Lexie stopped as she saw Callie looking at her. Callie went back to face the counter, furrowing her eyebrows in confusion.
"Coffee?" Callie offered.
Lexie looked up at Callie, "No. Thank you," She smiled.
Eric went out of the shower room and walked towards his locker to put his clothes in. He didn't notice Lexie standing at the door. Lexie stood straight, clenching at the charts as she anticipated his reaction. Callie cleared her throat, trying to get his attention.
"Honestly, you two..." Eric paused as he neatly put on his white coat, fastening in his pens and pager.
Callie cleared her throat louder, gritting her teeth. She stopped as Lexie looked at her. Callie stepped forward awkwardly, acting like she was supposed to move closer to Eric. Callie tried again to get his attention, now quietly exclaiming, "Eric!"
Eric put his phone inside his pocket as he turned around, "'believe it when I see it' my arse..." He stopped and noticed Lexie, "Dr. Grey," Eric glared at Callie. Callie sighed in defeat.
"Not my fault, dumbass," Callie muttered as she went back at the counter, picking up her mug and taking a sip of the coffee.
Lexie breathed in, as she saw Eric. Taking quite a long time before she breathed out, Her shoulders tensed. "Hi..." She exhaled as she spoke. She paused and turned her head towards her shoulder. She shook her head in embarrassment.
Eric glanced at Callie and back at Lexie. "Are those the charts?" He paused, "Okay," He then smiled at Lexie. He turned around to get his stethoscope.
Callie turned just in time to see Eric smiling, making her almost spit the coffee in her mouth. While Lexie blinked her eyes repeatedly, and furrowed her eyebrows. Callie and Lexie glanced at each other, before looking back at the neurosurgeon.
"Let's go?" He continued.
Lexie shook her head as she walked out. Lexie can't believe what she just witnessed. She's too confused about what's happening that she forgot about her little speech she prepared.
Eric glanced at Callie as she whispered, "You look weird," Eric narrowed his eyes at her as he followed Lexie.
Three days later
Lexie and Eric had been working together for two days, as per Derek's directive. - This would be the last day. Lexie thought that it would be difficult, knowing Eric and his ways of making her suffer, but as she spent an hour, a couple, then a day, two days; She realized that Eric Keaton - the bully who would always look down at her and punish her, was being kind to her and teaching her. Sure he's still sarcastic, arrogant, and direct like he was, but something was different now. - Apart from him smiling. She couldn't tell what, but she wondered if Eric would stay being nice to her now, or is he just planning something, she just didn't know it yet.
Hospital Cafeteria
Alex went towards the table where Cristina, Izzie and Lexie were. He slammed the tray as he sat beside Izzie.
"Bigfoot's at it again. He's hounding my surgery with Dr. Sloan," Alex said.
"Dr. Bailey put me in the clinic. Well, figures," Izzie said as she looked at her fork full of salad. She took a bite and looked in front of her. She got a glimpse of Lexie, staring out. Izzie paused and pointed her now empty fork at her before adding, "So..." She glanced at her plate, then back at Lexie, "How's working with Keaton? You seemed... quiet. Are you okay? Is he being immature or arrogant or whatnot?" Izzie went on, "Well, you can't complain, right? Among the people at this table, you're the only one who've seen the inside of the OR this week."
Cristina glared at Lexie and stated, "Lucky!" Cristina paused, "God, I should've pushed working with McDevil again."
Izzie glanced at Lexie as she remained gawking. Her attention was off elsewhere. Izzie glanced at Cristina. Cristina slowly chewed her food as she noticed Izzie gesturing her head at Lexie. "What?" Cristina mouthed. Izzie widened her eyes and gestured again. Cristina looked at Lexie beside her, eyebrow arched.
"Earth to Little Grey? Hello?" Cristina waved her hands in front of Lexie's face.
"Uhm, yes?" Lexie shook her head, glancing at Cristina, "Yes. Yes." Then she looked away.
Alex had been following their discussion as he ate his lunch, that when Lexie finally answered incoherently, he stopped eating. - He knew something's up. He looked up, curling his eyebrows as he, Izzie and Cristina followed Lexie's stare, leading them to towards Eric.
Alex glanced back at the second-year resident biting her lower lip and looking pensive, "She's being tortured, all right." Alex added.
"No. I'm not." Lexie finally spoke a clear thought. "He's..."
"... mean?" Alex went on.
"... arrogant?" Cristina stressed.
"... an ass?" Izzie implied.
Lexie had been commenting regularly about her terrible impression towards the neurosurgeon since the first day, that they already memorized it.
"... smiling... like actually smiling... at me," Lexie corrected.
The three looked at Lexie, not believing what she claimed. The first few months when Eric was the shiny new object Richard brought at the hospital to do an innovative surgery, they sought him like a god. But then, when he worked at Seattle Grace, their perception towards him changed. Izzie realized Eric was just like Mark Sloan when he's treating them- the interns then- as an object. But, unlike Mark, he's teaching - in his own way. Alex had experienced Eric's way of teaching. Cristina simply cared for the once in a lifetime surgeries Eric's name were bringing at the hospital.
As for Lexie's experience with McDevil - the nickname they finally used after George's death, when they endured his Hell month. Izzie was confused why among the interns, Lexie had been the only intern who had endured most of his bad characteristics. Izzie assumed then that Eric had been doing it on purpose. She planned on knowing why.
Cristina snorted a laugh, "McDevil doesn't know how to smile," Cristina peered at Alex as she added, "You should be his resident."
Alex glared at Cristina, "Yeah, why is that?"
Izzie faked a cough and said, "Evil spawn."
"He called me an imbecile for repeating his question," Alex said, "I didn't hear him because your intern had been yapping with his girlfriend behind me, and I get to be called an imbecile. Steve's the imbecile, not me." He added, leaning towards Cristina.
Cristina pondered for a minute then retorted, "Well. I kinda agree with him - you being an imbecile, I mean...," Cristina cackled with laughter as Alex made faces at her. Alex leaned back to his seat.
"Maybe you should be on his service, since you kinda agree with him," Alex countered.
Izzie uttered, "She already did. And Keaton kicked her out of his service not the other way around."
"Oh, right. I heard about that. Look at you, not even the devil can stand you," Alex blurted.
"I'm a badass," Cristina added, pointing her two index finger at herself.
"Yeah. a badass orderly," Alex mocked Cristina.
"Nurse," Cristina mocked back.
"I guess you're the only one who can stand him?" Izzie said to Lexie, "apart from Meredith... and George..." She looked at Lexie and asked, "He's friends with George, right? It must be torture."
Lexie sat straight, "Well, it won't be long now 'til the devil tortures me again," She spoke louder looking away, crossing her arms.
"What? Who?" April asked as she passed by, holding takeaway food. She thought Lexie was talking to her.
"You should eat. We only have a few minutes here," Jackson told April. Jackson pulled her away from the Seattle Grace residents.
"Yeah right, walk away, Mercy Westers," Cristina blurted, gesturing him to move away. Jackson and April went out of the cafeteria. Cristina watched them hurried out, "I think we should hurry up, too," Cristina added, keeping her eyes on the Mercy West group.
- - - - -
Eric saw Cristina's group as they sat at the table. He had been glancing at the group as he felt unusually conscious. - Not realizing that Lexie had been staring at him for a while. Arizona noticed him tuning out and in to their conversation.
"What? what? Where are you? Hello?" Arizona called on Eric.
"I'm just..." Eric halted, shaking his head, "Nothing," He continued to eat apple slices.
Arizona traced his stare. She looked behind her and noticed Lexie a few tables behind them. Arizona smiled cheekily at Eric, raising her eyebrows playfully.
"What?!" Eric asked, "You're weird... stop it."
"You checking at little Grey, huh?"
"It's not what you think?" Eric looked back at his food.
"Uhmm-Hmmm, I heard you're being nice?" Arizona leaned closer at Eric with a playful smirk.
"It's not what you think," Eric repeated. He stood up and picked up his tray, placing it by the bins. Eric headed towards the exit.
- - - - -
"You're staring. Stop staring!" Cristina exclaimed at Lexie, "...Kinda creepy," She added.
"I'm not staring!" Lexie replied, facing Cristina, "I'm just... Oop! He's standing up," Lexie faced away, "Just act normal." She hissed.
Izzie shook her head as she continued to eat. Cristina looked at Lexie with an arched brow, "That's normal?" Cristina uttered. Lexie continued stuffing her face with food.
Alex glanced at Lexie and then looked at Eric. He had a mischievous look on his face as he took a sip from his drink and stood up, "Dr. Keaton!"
Lexie watched Alex as he stood up. She realized Alex was up to something, "No- no!" Lexie quietly exclaimed and reached for Alex, straining her hand to pull Alex back at their table. Izzie chuckled at how silly Lexie looked.
Cristina blurted out as she ate her fries, "This is gonna be good." Watching Lexie and Alex. Izzie agreed and nodded in anticipation.
Eric looked at Alex as he called him.
Alex continued calling Eric until Eric noticed him. Alex stood with his hands inside his coat pocket. Lexie kept reaching, pulling at his coat. Alex pulled his coat off Lexie's grasp. Lexie lost her grip, and she awkwardly fell from her seat to the floor.
Eric hesitated at first before he walked towards Alex. He peeked back at Arizona, who was not looking before he walked towards the group.
Lexie hastily rose up as she saw a pair of legs under the table. She recognized those argyle socks anywhere. She crashed back on the chair and immediately stuffed herself with her lunch, looking away. Her coat was rumpled. She struggled to fixed her coat and unkept hair as Eric settled in front of Alex. Lexie acted like she was not just on the floor sprawled. She continued gobbling food.
Alex panicked as he didn't think about what to do once he got Eric's attention. He just needed him to walk closer to tease Lexie. He never realized that the attending would really walk towards them. Now, Eric's standing in front of him, hands crossed over his chest, awaiting his question, "so the - uhm - procedure you're gonna do later with Dr. Sloan would be..." Alex continued to outline the procedure, stammering.
Eric raised an eyebrow and grimaced as he listened to Alex. Eric glanced at the group. He peeked at Cristina who looked at him and Alex while her head remained lowered towards her plate. He then looked at Izzie who was suppressing a laugh. As Izzie saw Eric looking at her, she greeted Eric with a smile.
"... I-I just really find the procedure very - uhm, excellent," Alex scratched his head, cringing at his choice of word. - Excellent? His sweat started to bead on his temple. Alex was nervous. - imbecile. Eric faced Alex as he finished his statement.
"Dr. Karev," Eric interrupted him, "If you have the time to kiss ass, you have the time to check the patient," He implied.
"No - I'm just saying..." Alex tried to explain. Eric gestured at the exit. Alex growled, stepping out of the cafeteria. His plan backfired.
Eric looked back at the table and spotted Lexie stuffing her face with food, "Dr. Grey?"
"Mmmm.. Mmmm," Lexie grumbled without looking. She thought she could express a hello towards the attending, but nothing came out but mumble.
"O-kay," He uttered, shaking his head as he looked away. Eric looked at both Cristina and Izzie and smiled at them, "Doctors." Cristina stared at him and watched as he stepped away. Her mouth gaping as she couldn't believe the sarcastic devil smiled towards them.
Lexie sighed and sat more comfortably on her chair. Cristina chuckled right after he turned around and left the cafeteria.
Izzie slapped Cristina on her arm, "What?" She blurted, brushing her arm where Izzie whacked her. She chuckled as she asked Lexie, facing her, "Lexie Grey, what did you do to him?"
The Next Day - Morning Surgical Wing
Callie and Arizona walked along the halls of the surgical wing. Arizona checked her phone as they walked.
"How's... Eric and... his resident ?" Callie asked.
"I heard they're getting along well," Arizona responded as she scanned her phone, smiling.
Not the response Callie thought she would hear. Callie's shoes screeched as she tripped with her foot, staring at Arizona with disbelief, "Really?" She chuckled, "...I mean..." She laughed, " Really?! "
Arizona peered at Callie, still holding her phone. Arizona looked back at her phone as Callie continued walking beside her, putting her hands inside her coat pockets.
Callie pondered as she asked, "He really is being nice, huh?"
"And he's in a great mood all week," Arizona added.
Callie's eyebrows propped up as she had a thought. She stopped.
Arizona noticed her. Arizona stopped walking, turned to look at Callie and asked, "What?"
"Do you think he and Grey...?" Callie trailed.
Arizona tilted her head to the side as she pondered, "Well..." She chuckled anxiously.
Callie's eyes widened with curiosity as her girlfriend stammered, "What... what?!" Callie paused as Arizona walked away from her. Callie followed her, "Oh no no no... You know something... just say it...come on!"
"I don't okay," Arizona walked faster, "Not officially..." Arizona uttered. Callie heard it and stopped Arizona, pulling her by the arm. She groaned as she faced Callie, "It's just a thought really... I've known him and..."
"And what?" Callie asked.
Arizona looked away, trying to find words to tell Callie her hunch without her jumping to conclusions that may or may not be true. Arizona stared away and then noticed Mark walking out of the supply room.
"Is that?..." Arizona paused and was about to call Mark but Callie stopped her.
"What," Callie said, turning towards where Arizona's looking at. She saw Mark walking away, "Oh, it's just Mark..." looking back at Arizona, " Come on! We have more pressing matters than Mark's flavor of the month."
"20 says the nurse at the pit," Arizona claimed.
Callie shook her head as she turned back to Arizona, "Are we betting on this now?" She chuckled.
"O-kay," Callie shook her head as she continued, "the resident from Mercy West...one with short hair... okay? happy" Arizona beamed at her.
The both of them waited for the girl to come out of the supply room. "oh wait," Callie uttered as the door clicked open. Both of them looked at the door, breath hitched and shoulders were tense. Their tensed shoulders went limp as they saw they're both wrong - Lexie Grey went out of the supply room, looking on both sides as she walked out and closed the door.
"Well..." Callie uttered.
"When did that happen?" Arizona blurted out.
"Well... there goes our 'more pressing matters'," Callie said, looking at her girlfriend as Arizona continued to stare away.
Residents' Lounge
The chief resident posted the rotation schedule for that day. Each resident coming in looked at the board for their schedules. April Kepner walked towards the bulletin as she scanned the schedule, leaning in as she checked on her friends' schedule as well; mouthing the words as she read.
Jackson walked inside the lounge. April noticed him.
"Hey! you're in Neuro!" April said to Jackson as he stepped beside her and looked at the board as well.
"Hmmm. Not just me..." Jackson uttered as he walked away from the board and towards his locker. April furrowed her eyes as she looked at him. She turned back at the board and searched for that schedule he pointed at.
- - - - -
Lexie rushed in the lounge, gaining a look on all the residents inside - both Mercy Westers and Seattle Grace residents, alike. Her hair was disheveled and her shirt was buttoned wrong.
"Good...morning?" Cristina greeted Lexie, following her with a stare as Lexie stepped by the lockers, pushing Alex's legs away as she walked by.
"Hey!" Alex exclaimed. He kissed Izzie before walking out of the lounge.
Izzie sat beside Cristina as she whispered to her, "Does she know?" Cristina shrugged. Izzie went towards the locker beside Lexie's and leaned on it. She glanced at Lexie as she opened her mouth to asked something. Lexie looked at Izzie. Izzie let out a smile as she said, "Hi."
Lexie looked at her as she continued to change, "What is it?"
"You saw the schedule, right?" Izzie asked as Lexie sat and wore her scrub top.
Lexie stopped as she turned to look at Izzie. Her eyebrows arched up as she waited for Izzie to continue. Lexie looked behind her where the schedule was pinned. She stood up and walked towards the board, fixing her top on the way. She scanned the schedule, looking for her name. Her finger stopped as she saw her name with "Neurosurgery" beside it.

"You are being unreasonable!" Meredith whisper-shouted, jumping off the bed and knocking half the paper off at the same time, "I said it first so I get him."
"We aren't playing dibs," Addison laughed as Meredith picked up the paper on the floor, putting it back down on the bed. Addison quickly leaned over and sorted it out again.
"Only because you lost," she argued.
"Your argument is about as well-reasoned as Bailey's," Addison argued back.

Chapter 12
Nothing felt right. The apartment was too quiet and still. It felt wrong to brush their teeth without her beside them, to not see her cosmetics on the sink, and to not feel her warmth in their bed as they settled in to sleep. Kai reached for their cell. “Goodnight sweetheart. Sweet dreams. If I’m in them, make me look good. Shouldn’t be hard!😉” Almost immediately, came the reply. “My dreams came true the day l met you, my Kai. I love you. Goodnight honey”.
Kai put their cell back on the bedside locker and picked up their book. They opened it to the bookmarked page and began to read. But after reading the same paragraph over for the fifth time, they gave up. They replaced the bookmark and dropped the book on to the floor, where it landed with a thud.
They were mad with themselves. When they’d gone to the jewelry store the previous week, they hadn’t intended to buy a pendant. Driven by the sheer depth of their feelings for Amelia, they had intended to buy her a ring. As they had driven through the streets of Rochester, they had felt sure that they wanted to do this. They would buy her a ring to seal their commitment to her. It wasn’t necessarily that they intended to propose to her, they convinced themselves. Except they knew better. They knew that that was exactly what they had intended to do.
Lately, it had been on their mind more and more. If someone had asked them about marriage before they had met her, Kai would have said it wasn’t important to them. Being with Amelia had changed everything. They wanted to make her a binding promise of forever. To make the commitment and to officially make their relationship permanent. They knew she was the one. They would not, could not, love anyone else the way that they loved Amelia.
So they’d set out with confidence. But, as they’d parked outside the store, they remembered Amelia’s declaration that she didn’t want to get married and that not even they would be able to change her mind. In that moment, their confidence had crumbled and they’d chickened out and chosen the sapphire pendant instead.
She had liked it and it had made Kai happy that she had. But, thoughts of marriage and rings persisted. They wanted it. With Amelia. So, they’d recoup, dust themselves down and try again. Soon. They’d try again soon.
They must have eventually fallen asleep because they were awoken by their alarm blaring obnoxiously on the locker. They reached out and turned it off. They checked their phone for messages and seeing that there were none, proceeded to get up and ready for the day.
The meeting with The Catherine Fox Foundation was that afternoon. Kai thought that they’d check in with David before it. So, on arrival to the clinic, and after stopping to pick up two coffees, they went to his office.
His office door was ajar as Kai approached. They were about to make their presence known when they heard two voices emanating from the room. They weren’t deliberately eavesdropping but they couldn’t help but tune in at the mention of their name. Standing back, away from the door, so as not to be seen from within, Kai stood and watched.
“Kai Bartley’s contract prohibits them from working on any research which is considered to be identical to any project they have worked on here within 5 years of their being dismissed from the clinic. They would also find themselves liable to a lawsuit for breach of this clause. The wording if the document is pretty water tight and you would have a strong case against them,” the man, evidently a lawyer, told David.
“Yes, l am aware of that John. I pulled up their personnel file last week. Meredith Grey’s and Amelia Shepherd’s also. They are all of a similar vain. Now John, let me be clear. In the event of The Catherine Fox Foundation making an attempt to steal this research from me, l intended to come down on these three traitors like the proverbial ton of bricks. I want to hit them with everything we’ve got.”
The lawyer, John, nodded his understanding and began go gather himself up to leave. Not wishing to be caught watching, they took his preparation for departure as their cue to leave.
Kai hurried to the lab and hung up their jacket as they usually did. They slipped on their lab coat. Sitting down at the counter, they sipped on their coffee. The second cup had been discarded on the way from David’s office to the lab.
Their mind was racing as thoughts swirled in their head. David thought they were a traitor, trying to help The Catherine Fox Foundation steal his Parkinson’s Disease project away from him. That was the only logical conclusion that they could come up with. If that were true, he had somehow cottoned on to the fact they were behind the idea of moving the projects headquarters to Seattle.
“He’s a clever guy. He read the situation, put two and two together and had came up with five”, Kai thought. They needed to talk Amelia and warn her. As they reached into their pocket, the lab door opened and David walked in. His demeanor was normal, as if nothing was amiss.
“Good morning, Bartley. Welcome back. Did you have a good break?”
“Morning to you too, David. I had a great vacation. I spent it resting and catching up with friends and family. Ready to get back to it now, you’ll be glad to hear.”
“You traitorous liar!” he thought savagely. Outwardly, he remained cool. “Good. That’s good Kai. Speaking of vacation time, I’m here to extend your slightly. There’s really nothing much that can be achieved here today. This meeting later today could run on so l think you should hold off on project work for today. Why don’t you head home? Join the meeting from there?”
“Um okay?” Kai was relieved by his suggestion but also thrown by it. David was relentless and had always pushed the project to move as quickly as possible. Now, was sending them home?
David nodded “Okay, see you this afternoon.” Then he turned and walked out of the lab, leaving Kai to head away home in their own time. They shrugged off their pristine white lab coat and re-donned their jacket. They slung their laptop case up onto their shoulder and left the clinic.
On the drive home, they dialed Amelia’s number and spoke to her on hands free. They told her about what David had spoken to the lawyer about and their thoughts that he had jumped to incorrect conclusions.
“Amelia, this is all getting way out of hand. He’s preparing for legal action with the potential to ruin all of our careers. I never intended for it to come to this. I thought that if we could convince him to move the lab to Seattle in order to keep Meredith, we’d win too.”
Amelia had never been more acutely aware of the distance between them than she was right now. Kai was in so much pain and all she wanted was to hold them. However, all she could do was listen and support her partner. Share the burden of their emotions with them.
“We have this meeting this afternoon, honey. The way l see it, that’s our opportunity to put this right. I can kind of see where David’s coming from. He’s got wind of our desire to move this project, that means so much to him both personally and professionally, to another state. He doesn’t know the reason why. He just knows we are building a plan to make it happen. I can see how he might of taken those facts, put them together and gotten the completely wrong impression.”
Kai sighed deeply. “Yeah. Pretty much my thoughts exactly. The way he’s looking at it right now, l guess he’s got every right to be angry. I guess l just thought that he’d always come to me, hear me out before going nuclear on my ass.”
“That’s fair. The way you feel is fair and valid, Kai. To all extents and purposes, David has taken a father’s role in your life. He’s your Richard. I get that. This afternoon we’ll fix this. Together, cause Mer and l will be right there with you, and WE WILL FIX THIS!”.
They smiled at that. “Thank you, Amelia. Having my little pocket rocket by my side means the world to me.”
Amelia snorted through the phone line. “Little pocket rocket, indeed! The best things come in small packages.”
“l know. You are the best thing to ever happen to me and you definitely came in a tiny package. Seriously though, l want you to understand that I think you are the strongest, feistiest, most beautiful woman in the world. That you would fight my corner for me. Well that’s a whole other level of amazing to me. I love you Amelia Frances Shepherd.”
If Kai could have seen Amelia’s smile right then, their heart might just have exploded. She was beaming, proud to be Kai’s. “l will always fight for you, because l love you too. Shit, I’m being paged to the ER. Talk to you later.”
The call connection broke but Kai felt that emotional cascade begin to flow through their veins once again. “I will always be in your corner.” That’s what Amelia had said. That’s what Kai wanted too. Their courage and confidence restored, they checked their mirror before changing lanes and driving towards the jewelry store again. Time to try again.
The counter assistant remembered them and she greeted Kai warmly.
“How can l help you today?”
Kai smiled, took a deep breath and asked to see some engagement rings.
“Certainly. Rings for a gentleman or for a lady?”
Kai appreciated that the assistant, Caroline according to her name badge, was not assuming anything about them. Also, that she didn’t flinch when Kai asked to see ladies rings. Caroline took a set of cabinet keys from her pocket and invited Kai to follow them down the counter.
She opened a cabinet and pulled out four trays of rings. Kai hadn’t anticipated there being quite so many to choose from. Caroline read their anxiety and guided them to slim down the selection. They worked it down by a process of elimination to the more traditional gold diamond rings.
Caroline patiently went through the prices of each, size, availability, stone quality, and gold quality.
After some time, almost 90 minutes, Kai had selected a simple but elegant gold ring. The diamond was good quality and it was a size that Kai judged would be to Amelia’s taste. Not big and gaudy, not tiny, but somewhere in between. Kai knew Amelia’s ring size. During a recent visit to Seattle, they’d poked around Amelia’s jewelry box in an attempt to assess her taste and style. Her engagement ring from Owen had been there.
Caroline carefully polished up the elegant ring, buffing away any finger marks and making the stone sparkle. She popped it in to a small round box. Declining a gift bag, Kai paid for their purchase and stepped out on to the sidewalk.
They felt happy, excited, scared? All of these emotions? Yes, that was probably true. Stowing the little box in their pocket, they checked the time. Seeing they had some to spare before the meeting, Kai wandered to a nearby café and had lunch before they headed home.
They set themselves up at the kitchen counter. They logged into Zoom and waited for the others to join, cup of steaming tea in hand. The screen of their silenced cell lit up. Amelia had sent her a text to say she had spoken to Mer, who was absolutely going to be in Kai’s corner. The explanation was simply this: you’ve found your people Kai Bartley 😘.They texted back a simple hug emoji.
The screen pinged, letting Kai know that they had been admitted to the meeting. Amelia and Meredith were sharing a screen. Catherine was present as was Jackson. David was there. “All present and accounted for”, Kai thought. “Let’s get the party started.”
Just then, another ping indicated that another person had joined the meeting. Kai recognized him as the man they had seen in David’s office earlier that day. Their nerve endings tingled and they felt their body switch to hyperawareness mode. They texted Amelia to give them the heads up. On screen, they watched the brunette read the text and casually tap Meredith’s hand, alerting her. She read the message too and though her face gave nothing away, Kai thought they saw the Seattle duo set their shoulders a little squarer.
Catherine opened the session by welcoming everyone. She expressed her hope that this would be a constructive meeting, one that they all would benefit from. She laid out the purpose of the meeting, explaining that she had been approached by David in relation to possibly moving the headquarters for the Parkinson’s Disease research project to Grey-Sloan. Catherine explained that she would be open to this as long as they could agree on some key terms and conditions.
David interrupted her at this point. “My research project is not going to be poached from me. Not now, not ever. It’s bad enough that you have poached my project head, neurosurgeon and lead neuroscientist. Still, even there, the jokes on you, Ms. Fox. Their Mayo Clinic contracts, legally binding contracts, you’ll agree John, stipulate that on dismissal from the Mayo Clinic, they cannot work on a similar project for five years.”
Catherine was shocked by his outburst. Everyone was. Catherine broke the silence. “I have no idea what you are talking about, Dr. Hamilton. Those are some pretty serious accusations and l assure you that they will be forwarded to the foundations legal team unless they are immediately withdrawn.”
“As for poaching your staff, that’s also untrue. I haven’t even met Dr. Bartley before today. Their reputation proceeds them, of course, but this is my first time to meet or to speak to them.”
“Oh you would say that –“, David began. His lawyer and Kai both moved to stop him.
“David, stop this. You don’t know the full story. There is no plot to steal the project and Dr. Fox hasn’t poached me. I am employed by the Mayo Clinic and that’s how I intend to stay.”
“David, the thing is, I want to move to Seattle. You know I’ve been seeing Dr. Shepherd romantically? Well, it has become a serious relationship and I want to be closer to her on a permanent basis.”
“You were easy prey then, Bartley. Probably got you cheap.”
“Hey, that’s not fair”, said Amelia. “Don’t speak to them like that.”
“Everything they have told you do far is true, even if you don’t believe it. What have you got to lose by hearing them out?” Meredith demanded.
David stiffened at effectively being told to pipe down and listen but he held his tongue, allowing Kai to continue.
“Dr. Grey had already explained to you that with her commitments in Seattle, she simply wouldn’t be able to travel to Minnesota as often or for as long. That was going to hurt the project. That was what I used to encourage you to consider this move. I stood to benefit from it, as I would have had to go where the project went.”
David was not ready to accept what he was hearing. He was astounded. His best neuroscientist had tried to play him because they had fallen in love with Amelia Shepherd?
“Let me get this right. You set all this up so you could move to Seattle? Really?” Catherine seemed as astounded as David.
“Yes. I love this project and what it stands for and what it might mean for the future of medicine. It’s a job that I do not want to give up. But, if we lose Dr. Grey, we also lose Amelia and that just won’t work for me. So, yeah, l set this up so I could possibly keep my job and the woman l love.”
Amelia tilted her head up and tried to fight back the tears that were threatening to fall. It was a battle she was losing and as she lowered her gaze again, one tear trickled down her face. Kai wished they could reach out and wipe it away, hold her, whisper secret l love you’s into her ear.
“See, l told you I knew nothing about any of this. Now, if you will withdraw your accusations, Dr. Hamilton, we can discuss where we go from here like professionals.”
David withdrew his accusations none too gracefully. He was upset that he’d looked like a fool. His pride was hurt . That said, now he was sure that he wouldn’t lose control of the project, he was able to focus on the meeting more closely.
The argument for the project to be based in Seattle was solid and when the reasons behind the idea were discussed with level heads, it became clear that it was really the best way forward. The decision was made to move the main laboratory to Seattle. David would remain in charge and Catherine Fox would receive an acknowledgement in the published articles.
Kai was happy with that and was gathering their documents in anticipation of the meeting ending. It had been going for 4 hours now. They were stopped in their tracks by one additional item from David.
“l think it would be best if you would hire Dr. Bartley , Dr. Fox. I would release them from their contract, leaving them free to work wherever they pleased. Also, if you hired them as your lead neuroscientist, you’d be getting the best lead neuroscientist I’ve ever known.”
Kai was shocked. “Are you firing me?”
“Not at all. I am helping you to be happy, you goose. If you go to Seattle on assignment, as it were, you’d be obliged to come back here when it finishes. You clearly don’t want to do that. So, l am releasing you hoping Catherine is as big a sop as I am for a happy ending”.
Catherine felt all eyes on her. She was a bit annoyed about the way they had met Kai and about the drama they had brought to the meeting. She was sure she should say no but damned if she didn’t find herself rooting for the love struck scientist too.
“Hmm, well I am inclined to agree with you about this David. I don’t like liars but I don’t think that was ever your intention, Dr. Bartley. So, l am welcoming you to Grey-Sloan, if you wish to work here.
It took Kai a few seconds to process this offer. When they realized what was being given to them, they smiled shyly. “Amelia? What do you think, sweetheart?”
“I think that if you say no Kai Bartley , I will kill you!”
“My lady has spoken, and what my lady wants, my lady gets. Thank you David for understanding. Dr. Fox, thank you for your generous offer. I assure you that I will never do anything like this again. So when do I start?”

Memories I will never find (2)
“You don’t think it’s destiny, do you? That the things in the visions are bound to happen?”
“April. You can’t seriously think that just because we see these… things, they’ll happen no matter what.”
Jackson and April experience a few intense, vivid, highly realistic dreams.

Note: Thank you so much for all your comments on chapter 1, I'm glad you liked this silly idea! Fetus Japril is dear to my heart, and writing them is really fun. Here's the second and last part, hope you'll enjoy!
(chapter 1)
___
April Kepner is freaking out. And Jackson has already been witness to a proper April Kepner freakout before – every candidate who wrote their intern exam pretty much has, because she was… well, a mess – but not like this. She’s almost hyperventilating, and her eyes are so wide that, well, they kind of remind him of how she looked when he dream-interrupted her wedding.  “April. Breathe.” “Breathe? Breathe?? What the hell was that?” “I don’t know!” He’s making an effort not to show it, but he’s rattled too, and he would also like answers. “It doesn’t make any sense, the previous ones were nothing lik–” “The previous ones? Did you have visions like this before?” April looks at him accusingly, as if he were responsible for these things. “Well, yeah, a few,” he admits. “You didn't?” “No, I did, but I thought I was the only one. Dreaming, I mean. The scenes didn’t really make sense.” He passes a hand on his face and sighs. “Tell me about it. Wait, really, tell me about it. Was I in your… visions?” “Yeah.” “What was I doing?”  “You weren’t getting sliced open on a kitchen table, that’s for sure!”

hi can you do addison montgomery x injured reader thanks!
Tumblr media
The Harmony of Tragedy (Addison Montgomery x Injured!Reader)
tags: established relationship, Addison is worried about you, hurt/comfort, angst, private practice era, minor description of injuries and surgeries
summary: You get injured and Addison can’t do anything to help you.
It was an accident. That was all she heard before she excused herself from whatever she was doing, something she couldn’t even remember now. All she remembers was that she moved, quickly. She made it to Saint Ambrose Hospital, Naomi alongside her as support, “(Y/N) (L/N)’s room number please.” She tapped her fingers nervously against the desk, something she didn’t do often anymore. Naomi placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, she knew how hard this was on Addison. How much she loved you, and right now she needed this receptionist to hurry up.
“She’s in Room 423.” With those words Addison took off without a word, Naomi smiled and gave a small thank you to the receptionist before racing off after Addison, who was stopped in front of the hospital window of room 423, staring at you. Your injuries are mild at best, your leg is in a cast and you have a neck brace on, Addison moves slowly towards the doorway, it’s as if time moves in slow motion and when she meets your gaze, you give her a smile. “They got a C.T. I know you’d ask for one if I didn’t tell you that, no brain bleed, not even a bit of trauma if you couldn’t tell. Femur fracture and they’re keeping me in this brace, for now, to make sure my spine is alright.” You see her exhale a sigh of relief at your own rundown of your injuries, as she sits on the chair near the bed, beginning to sob. It was never her, she had seen it happen a million times, wives mourning wives, husbands dropping to their knees at the news of having lost their wife but not their baby, or vice versa. Now, she felt like that situation was here in her lap, she had almost lost you like she had lost friends and family before. "Addie, hey... It's just a little graze from a car crash. I'm okay." Addison, in her terror and overwhelming rush of emotions, grasps your hand tightly as she kisses your forehead, careful not to jostle you from your position too much. "Do you need anything? Food? Drink?" She asks as you sigh and decline, "I can't, they've got me in surgery soon. You know how it goes." She nods and grips your hand a bit, "Then I'll just stay here with you for as long as they'll let me stay." She says simply, like many of her patients had before. Before the baby came and their lives changed forever, or before she had found the worst during a routine appointment and watched her patients deal with the fallout. Right now, she was feeling all of those emotions with you and all she could think was how thankful she was that you were alive and well. Even as the surgeons come in, greeting her kindly from prior surgeries together and wheel you away from her. Leaving her, alone and afraid. She fought against those emotions right now and she could only feel thankful that you were strong and so was she, strong enough for you.
You hold her hand, tightly. Her hand is warmer than yours and it's all you crave, she radiates all the warmth you crave in this cold, clinical hospital room that you're basically tied to right now, so you decide now is the moment to a pop a question you've been wanting to ask for a while. "Addie, I think we should live together... When this is all over. I just hate leaving you in the morning and I just think... No, I know that us living together is better for both of us." She just smiles at you and nods slightly, "I'm not saying no, at all, but we'll come back to this in a few weeks, when you start recovering a little more. Don't make rash decisions because you're going into surgery. Please." You give a small sigh but decide to listen, she's seen this more than you and you know that. You also know that you want to move in with her, this isn't the time to start an argument, sure but when is? "Maybe just bit by bit? Let me move some stuff in every week?" She takes a moment to consider the compromise from you and nods, "Okay, i'll move some stuff while you're in surgery and then you'll stay with me after. I know you wouldn't follow the post-surgery care unless I'm there." She jokes as you roll your eyes, "Whatever you say, Addie." You feign annoyance with her jab but she kisses your forehead softly, noting the doctors coming into the room to take you to surgery. "I'll see you later," You smile at her as the doctors begin to wheel you out, "You better." She says back, brushing her hair behind her ears as you leave her, alone in the hospital room.

Chapter 12
Tumblr media
Previous chapter | Next chapter
As Cristina and Amory jjogged through the park, forced to do so by Meredith, the first woman stopped to catch her breath. “Oh, you’re stupid, oh god…” As they resumed the jog, she went on. “You’re a stupid, evil sadist and I want to kill you.”
“I’ll help. This is not the hours to do this. Can you go sloer, I have short legs!” The smaller girl managed to get out through her beacy breaths, as she tried to catch up.
“Endorphins are good. Endorphins are mood elevators. This is supposed to make us feel better.” The dirty blonde explained.
“Oh god, do you feel better?” Cristina moaned as they stopped.
“I don’t.” Amory pointed out as she reached her friends, bending over slightly to catch her breath. “There’s a reason I don’t run.”
“I’m stupid.” Meredith admitted.
“Slutty mistress.” The Asian woman insulted, Amory glaring at her.
“Pregnant whore.” The dirty blonde returned.
“Just wait until I’m not too tired to hit you two.” She threatened, still bent over, hands on her knees.
“Sleeping with out bossed was a terrible idea.”
“You know what’s ruined for me? Ferry boats. I used to love ferry boats and Derek has got at hing for ferry boats. Now everytime I see a freaking ferry boat…” Thedorty blonde vented, the short girl laying down on the grass.
“You know what’s ruined for me? Coronary artery by-pass grafts. And aortic aneurysms. God, I used to love aortic aneurysms.” Both her friends flopped down beside her, looking up at the sky.
“Yeah, that”s worse.” Amory shared.
“Have you cried yet?” Meredith questioned as the short girl decided whether she should tell her friends about her new relationship.
“Do you think we’d feel better if we cried? Just like that, let it out?” Cristina wondered.
“You would. It has helped me a lot…” The small girl shared her advice. All of the sudden, she hits both her friends at once and they made a protesting noise. “What? I warned you I would hit you once I wasn’t too tired anymore.”
“God, Amy, that one hurt.”
“You deserved it…” They fell into comfortable silence, until the short girl blurted out. “I’ve been seeing George.”
“You… what?” Meredith almost yelled.
“I’ve been seeing George. For a couple of weeks now.” She looked from the sky to her friends to see their reaction.
“God, you could have waited some more timed, Amy.” The dirty blonde let out, making the girl furrow her brows in confusion.
“Ha! You owe me twenty, pay uo.” Cristina laughed in victory.
“She… what? Why does she owe you money?” The girl shook her head in confusion, but already guessing why in her head.
“I bet you two would get together by this week, Mer though it’d take longer. Now I got some money for free.” The Asian woman explained with a smile.
“You did nt!” She hit both her friends again. “Crisitna yan!” She hit the girl to her left an turned to her right. “Meredith Grey!” She smacked the dirty blonde. Now hitting both of them at once to accentuate her words, she kept going. “We do not…” And again. “Bet…” And again. “On our friends…” And another one, as the women tried to get up. “Love life!!” She got another smack in before they started running from her.
“I’m not so tired anymore.” Cristina sprinted along with Meredith, leaving the small girl behind.
~~~~~~
Now in the hospital’s locker room, Amory tells her new boyfriend what had happened, what she found out during her morning run with the other two interns.
“They bet on us, George! Like actually money, on how long we’d take to start seeing each other.” The frustration made the girl’s voice higher in pitch, as she vented.
“Tehy… what? Money? On us?” The boy blurted out, confused, as he tried to comfort Amory through holding her hand.
The girl made an affirmative noise, their attention soon being drawn to the sound of Izzie giggling next to Alex. “What is she doing?” Crisitna asked, certain disgust in her voice.
“She’s… hanging out with Alex.” The male intern pointed out the obvious.
“Why?” The Asian woman questioned.
“I don’t know…” George said.
“Maybe they’re friends?” The shorter girl suggested.
“Make tha lambs stop screaming.” The boy stage-whispered as Meredith tied her shoes, making his girlfriend giggle.
As they left and walked down the hallway, Bailey and Alex in front of them, Izzie explained. “You guys are wrong about him, alright. Once you get to know him he’s really sweet.”
“He’s Alex.” George deadpenned, his hand on the small of Amory’s back.
“Look, he was sweet to me once and the next day he was an ass.” The young intern shared, shrugging. “If he’s actually willing to be decent then fine, if he wants to just switch around like that I’m not putting up with it.”
“Hey, Grey.Izzie was talling me about the tapes of your mom performing surgery.” Said boy turned around and talked loudly. “I’d kill to see the Ellis Grey in action.”
“Hey, you know what, maybe you can come over tonight and we can all watch it together.” The taller blonde suggested. “Right?”
“Oh, yeah, if this were a hell dimension.” Meredith answered, sarcastically.
“Do you have a thing for Alex?” Amory questioned the tall blonde.
“No!” She exclaimed. At her friends reaction, none of them believing her, she repeated. “I don’t.”
“You have a thing for Alex.” The small girl repeated, this time as an affirmation.
“Are we saving lives or having a tea party? Walk faster people.” Their resident reprimanded.
~~~~~~
“I know, I just think you should tell him about the baby.” Meredith told Cristina, as they and Amory followed Dr. Bailey. “He’d at least have the responsibility of having to pay…”
“No! You know what, he’ll never know. It’s over.”
“I actually don’t agree with Cristina, but if she’s terminating the pregnancy what good would it do to tell him?” The short girl shared.
“Exactly, Amy. After the pregnancy is taked care of, Burke won’t even be a blip on my rader, he’ll be a smudge.”
“Right…” Meredith answered, ironically, as Cristina grabbed her by the shoulders.
“You know, Meredith, leave the sarcasm up to me. Really, it doesn’t suit you.”
The three girls now walked to their patient’s room and Amory added. “I get it, you know. Besides, we don’t know where he stand on abortion. It could do more bad than good to tell him.”
“Thanks, Amy.I appreciate it.”
Once they entered the room, Alex is presenting. “Kelly Roche, 23 years old, in for a scheduled ETS for treatment of erythrophobia and hyperpyrexia.”
“Arythrophobia?” Izzie questioned in a hushed tone.
“Blushing.” Cristina and Amory answered in unison, the first one searching the meaning of the word in a book and the second one saying it solely from memory.
“Do you have any doubts about the procedure?” Their resident asked Kelly.
“Doctor…” The girl stopped, her skin flaring up.The short girl moved to get their patient a wet cloth, to help with the blushing, as Kelly flashed her a thankful look. “Dr. Shepherd explained everything. He was very…, huh…, helpful.” Amory put the cloth of the girls face, in attemmpt to make her more comfortable, as she fannced her face. “He gave me some literat… sorry.”
“Don’t be, there’s nothing to be sorry for.” The young intern smiled at her.
“Besides, half the patients that come here have the hots for Shepherd.” Alex joked, trying to get the patient to feel less embarraced.
“Dr.Karev!” Bailey warned, as Amory kept wetting the patient’s face.
“What? It’s true…”
“Okay, Kelly, I think we’ve finished for now. See you later.” The short girl smiled at the patient as they left the room. Meredith and her went to the vending machine and she commented. “I’m so hungry.”
As she was about to get herself some food, their resident called them. “Hey, there’s a new surgical case coming up from the pit. Likely diverticulitis. Let’s go.”
“So much for my food…” The girl ran to the elevator, her friend beside her.
“Get your hand off le! i could report you to the chief and you’d be out on your ass!” They heard a women yelling as they approached. “You’re all amateurs.” Amory froze next to her friend, recognizing the woman in front of her as the dirty blonde’s mother, or at least a deranged version of the woman.
“Patient’s complaining of cramping pain and diarrhoea.” Cristina read the chart and Meredith grabbed her small friend’s arm tightly. “Also suffers from Alzheimer’s.”
“Amateurs!” The woman screamed, her voice cracking.
“Patient’s name?” At the the lach of response, Bailey insisted. “Yang, patient’s name.”
Ellis Grey’s gaze turned to Meredith and the grip on Amory’s arm only grew stronger. “What the hell are you dong here?” The older woman spat out and Meredith turned to leave, dragging Amory with her. “How many times have I told you not to bother me when I’m at work!” Both girls now hid behind a door, the smaller one almost feeling her friend’s hand cutting off her blood supply.
“Ellis Grey.” Cristina answered Bailey.
“Meredith’s mother.” George almost whispered.
“You’re amateurs! You’re amateurs!” The older Grey kept yelling.
~~~~~~
Now in the locker room, Meredith hadn’t let go of her friend’s arm, as their friends talked over each other on the outside, entrance barred by Bailey.
“Dr. Karev, stick with the ETS case. And Alex, her blushing impulse is not a toy for you to play with or a button for you to push, understood?” Bailey instructed her intern.
“Hey, Meredith? My great-grandmother, she died with Alzheimer’s.” Crisitna shouted. The grasp on Amory’s amr wouldn’t give and she knew that she’d get a bruise from it, but wouldn’t dare deny her friend that comfort. As the dirty blonde hadn’t spoken a word, she also assumed she found comfort in the silence, something else she wouldn’t deny her.
“Izzie, the Dr. Shepherds need an interns up in the NICU.” The resident kept going.
“Wait, both of them? Together? And me, by myself, with the two married people who hate each other…”
“Go. Cristina, you’re on the thoracotomy.”
“With Burke? Oh, can I have the hateful married couplde instead…” Crisitna complained.
“Okay, I’m sorry, I thought I was your resident, not your hostess. I assign, you take. Is that a problem?” Bailey reprimanded. “Is there some reason why it’s inconvenient for you to spend the day, in the OR, learning from Dr. Burke?”
“No, I’m very happy to be working with Dr. Burke, thank you very much.” The intern said quickly and she left.
“George, take care of Dr. Grey.”
“Yes, thank you.” The boy huggede the resident, much to her surprise. “She needs a friend right now…” As he tried to go through the door, the woman stopped him. “Oh, you mean, Ellis, the… mother.”
All the interns now gone, Bailey closed the door behind her as she entered the room, Mereidht’s hand still firm on Amory’s arm. “Are you able to work today?”
“Yes, I’m fine.” The taller intern reassured.
“Cause I would understand it if you wanted to be with your…”
“No.My mother and I don’t have the easiest… it’s just better if I’m working.”
“Okay, you’re on scut.” The resident informed.
“Excuse me?”
“While we take care of your mother, you can catch up on charting, run samples to the lab…”
“I told you, I’m fine!” The dirty blonde protested, exasperated.
“And I appreciate that you’re fine, but I have to appreciate a certain level of distraction for you today. Even in the face of all that fineness. So scut, now.”
As Meredith attempted to leave, she dragged the small girl with her once more, who called out. “Mer? You have to let me go first…”
“Oh, sorry.” She loosened her firm grip and left the room, leaving Amory to rub her arm with her nuse scrunched up in pain. “Ouch.”
“She had a firm grip on you there.” The resident joked. “Amory, go save Stevens, I don’t know how she can survive the Shepherds. Besides, Montgomery-Shepherd seems to like working with you.”
“Sure, Dr. Bailey. But, can you please try to keep an eye on Meredith?” The girl asked, worried.
“I will. You knew?”
“I did… for a while now, I did.” The intern reveals, lowering her eyes to the ground.
“You’re a good friend, you know that, Madden? They’re lucky to have you looking after them. I think they’d be even more lost if it wasn’t for you mothering them.” The resident complimented.
“Thank you, Dr. Bailey.” She smiled and left the locker room.
~~~~~~
As both Izzie and Amory watched the premature baby, the Shepherds talked.
“Where’s the mother?” Derek asked.
“Gone. She stuck around long enough to get the kid strung out and then took off. Nice, huh?” The short intern furrowed her eyes in compassion.
“Addison…”
“Derek, I know it’s a long shot. I know that.” The redhead explained, Amory’s eyes still on the baby.
“You told me, you had a newborn with an invasive mass. You failed to mention she was premature, underweight and addicted to narcotics.” The man argued, handing Amory the chart, which she scanned through. “There’s no way this baby can survive spinal surgery.”
“You don’t know that…”
“And if she does? She’s a mess… meningitis, seizures… she’s gonna live a short and painful life.” Derek evaluated.
“You don’t know that!” The woman repeated more assertively.
“It’s my job to know that.”
“You’re not God, Derek.” Amory’s eyes widened and she shared a look with Izzie.
“Excuse me?”
“I’m sorry, honey, but you’re not, you don’t get to decide…” She was immediately cut off by her husband.
“Did you just call me honey? Don’t call me honey.”
“Fine, you’re not God, Dr. Shepherd. If the patient has any chance at survival, which I think she odes, than you have the responsibility to…”
“Don’t talk to me about responsibility.” He darted back.
“You took and oath, Derek.”
“Oh, and don’t you dare talk to me about oaths.”
“Derek, I messed up. People mess up.”
“You slept with my best friend on my favorite sheets.
“The flannel sheets? You hate the flannel sheets.” The interns’ discomfort grew by the second.
“I love the sheets!”
“Can we just stop talking about the sheets?”
“Fine!”
“I, um, I think we’re just going to go check on the labs.” Amory interrupted, eager to get herself out of the room, the tall blonde intern thanking her with a smile.
~~~~~~
As Izzie and Amory came back into the room, chart in hand, thye found Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd looking at the baby, as they grip her finger.
“She’s got a good grip.” Izzie commented.
“Yeah.”
“I don’t… the labs don’t look good.” Amory handed them to the attending.
“She’s got a resistant strain of pneumococcus.” Addison read the chart.
“The antibiotics aren’t working…” The short girl pointed out.
“You might want to get yourself reassigned, Dr. Madden and Dr. Stevens, I don’t think we’l be operating today.” The attending recommended.
“So do you think Dr. Shepherd was right?” The tall blonde asked.
“She’s too far gone…” The redhead admitted, Amory’s eyes filling with compassion. “She does have a good grip.”
“Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd? If you don’t mind I’d like to follow the case until the end.3 The shorter girl asked, and at the woman’s questioning look, she explained. “I don’t like leaving things half done. Besides, this little one could use someone rooting for her, even if only to keep her company as she goes.”
The attending smiled up at the girl, seeing some of herself in her and recognising her potential. “Sure, Madden. you can stay.”
Sometime later, the baby now gripping the intern’s finger, Addison watched her. “You know, Derek was right.”
“I’m sorry, about what?” The girl questioned.
“You’d be good in pediatrics. I’ve been watching you since I arrived to make sure, and it’s true. You’re on of the people at the top of your class, so you don’t lacj the surgical skills, and you have the personality for it. You’re assertive when you need to be, and you seem to care for every single one, without letting it affect you negatively.” The girl smiled and Addison eyed her curiously. “You managed to care for the patients while being able not to get overly attached. In Peds you need to thread a very think line, trying to stay compassionate while not letting the losses brake them. Most are initially on either side of it, they need a lot of practice to get there. That natural balance you seem to be able to keep would make you perfect for it. Same thing for neonatal, I think you’d have a bright future in either of them.”
The intern felt as though she’d just been looked right through and blushed slightly. “Thank you, Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd. I’m awared if I get overly attached it can cloud my judgement, so I try my best to remind myself that we can’t sace every single one. We just have to try our best to do so. And much as I tend to take some losses personally, I’d like to believe I can bounce back from them.” The girl looked down at the baby in front of her, her heart heavy at the situation. “If there’s anything life has thought me so far, it’s that I’m not easily broken.”
Some more time went by, until the resident turned to the intern again. “You should take a break, Amory. Go get something to eat, stretch your legs. I’ll page you if I need anything.”
“Okay, I’ll be back soon.” As the intern flashed the redhead a smile she left the room.
Walking through the hallways, all she could think about was how much her resolve to specialise in Peds has strengthened. She’d always felt inclined to it, but having now heard from two attendings how well she’ll fit in, she knew that is was the right track for her. Her inters in neonatal was also growing, falling for the speciality quickly. However, her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Bailey’s slightly panicked voice. As she saw Cristina being rolled out of the OR on a bed, she ran up to them.
“Cristina? What happened?” She let out, worry in her voice.
“Her pulse is racing, I need her on a monitor to get a BP.” Bailey spoke up. “I want her started on a liter of LR. Izzie, run ahead to emergency, let them know we’re on the way.”
“Dr. Bailey!” Amory called out and joined the resident, whispering to her. “She’s pregnant. Cristina’s seven weeks pregnant.”
As Izzie and Bailey enetered the elevator, Bailey changed her game plan. “Okay, no, we’re going to pre-op instead. Amory, find Addison Shepherd and be discreet.”
As the girl ran through the halls, she found Addison walking down the stairs with the Chief and George.
“Dr. Shepherd, I’m sorry, we need you. It’s Cristina, Cristina Yang, she’s collapsed.”
“Cristina’s collapsed?” George asked, worried.
“Why do you need me.” Addison responded, clearly puzzled. At the girl’s expression, she understood. “Oh.”
“Cristina’s pregnant?” The male intern exclaimed, loudly.
“George! Keep it quiet, okay?” She quickly left, running to accompany the attending’s fast pace, as her short legs wouldn’t allow her to walk any faster.
~~~~~~
As they take Crisitna to the OR, Bailey spoke up. “Okay, Amory, you can leave now.”
“Dr. Bailey, can I stay please? Just to keep her company?” As she saw the resident’s mouth open to protest, she went on. “Look, I know she’s unconscious, but I just need to be there for her, okay? I can’t leave her alone… I won’t leave her along. She needs someone to look after her and you said it yourself earlier, I look after all of them. So, please, just let me do it now.” The girl pleaded, her puppy dog eyes coming to play.
“Let her stay, Miranda, it won’t interfere.” Addison backed her up, being fond of the girl.
“Okay, fine, you can stay.” The resident gave up.
Later into the surgery, Amory still by her friend’s side, Izzie speaks up. “She’s gonna be okay, right?”
“How attached was she to this pregnancy?” The attending questioned.
“I don’t know, she’s a pretty private person.” The tall blonde answer, not being particularly close to the woman on the operating table.
“She wasn’t. Attached I mean. She was planning on terminating the pregnancy.” The short blonde informed, her eyes never leaving her friend’s face.
“Okay… she’s lost a lot of blood, but I’ll save her. Dr. Bailey, you must have a surgery or two of your own today?”
Bailey who held the girl’s head answered. “I’m fine right here.”
“Looks like I’m not the only one who mothers them.” Amory smiled up at her resident, appreciating her worry.
~~~~~~
Neither Bailey nor Amory left Cristina’s side through her recovery. The intern held her the entire tome, stroking her heir lightly ever so often. The resident looked over them like a hawk, refusing to let any bad in the world happen to the girl.
Once Crisitna woke up, she looked to her friend, the feeling of her fingertips running through her hair calming her. “Hi there.” She whispered. “You’re back.”
“What happened?” The girl asked, her voice.
“You had en extra uterine pregnancy.” The resident explained and Cristina’s eyes lifted of her friend’s face for the first time. “Your left falopian tube burst. Dr. Shepherd… she did everything she could but there was too much damage. She couldn’t save the tube.”
The injured intern snuggled against her friend slightly, finding comfort in her hold. “Amy?”
“yeah, I’m right here. What do you need?” The girl whispered.
“Can you… hold me? Just until I fall asleep.” She asked, her voice broken.
“Of course.” The girl’s fingers stille ran through her locks. “I’m right here, not going anywhere. I’ve got you. You can relax, I got you.” She whispered in her friend’s ear as she drifted off. Bailey watched both girls like a proud mother, appreciating Amory’s help with taking care of the group.
~~~~~~
As Amory approached the group, after Cristina had fallen asleep, she found Izzie doing the same.
“Hey, did you get your mom’s biopsy results back?” The blonde questioned Meredith.
“Not yet.” George beated Meredith to inform Amory as she sat next to him and they shared a quick kiss.
“Wait, what did I miss?” Izzie questioned, clearly a bit shocked at the scene.
“We’ve been seeing each other for a couple of weeks now.” Amory explained as George smiled at her and gripped her waist.
“How’s Cristina?” Meredith asked her.
“She’s going to be in a lot of pain for a few days, but she’ll be okay.” The short blonde explained.
“I’m glad you were ther, Izzie. Amy arrived later so it could have been much worse.” Meredith explained.
“Are you?” The former model questioned.
“It’s just… it’s just that a lot of the time it feels like you, Cristina and Amy are kind of over ther and I’m… here.” The girl said, a certain sadness in her eyes.
At that, Amory gave her a playful nudge. “You’re welcome to join us ‘over there’ sometimes, if you’d like.”
“So, about Alex.” Meredith went on.
“I know, you guys hate him, fine…”
George groaned at that and Amory spoke up, almost offended. “I don’t hate him! i mean, he’s not my favorite person in the whole world, but if he wants to start being nice then I’m here for it.”
“Well, you don’t hate anyone, Amy.” The boy argued and the short blonde shrugged.
“We do, but I jus wanna say that I believe you.” Mereditf intervented. “He’s different once you get to know him.”
After that, the lab technician approached them, handing Meredith her mom’s labs. “Here you go. Ellis Grey.”
The girl read it and handed it to George. “Let her know.”
As he walked away, Izzie asked worried. “Meredith are you okay?”
“She’s not…” The small girl whispered, more to herself.
“No, I’m not okay.” The dirty blonde agreed.
The woman’s mass was benign.
~~~~~~
As Amory walked past Ellis’ room, she saw George laying on the bed with her. The woman snuzzled against him as she slept. Her eyes widened in shock and her boyfriend got up from the bed, seeing her through the window.
“Should I be jealous?” The short girl giggled as she pressed a kiss against his mouth.
“She thinks I’m her husband…” They began walking through the hallway, hans intertwined.
“My boyfriend looks like my friend’s dad… slightly disturbing.” Both laughed at the fact. “I’m guessing Thatcher Grey must be a handsome man then.” She rose to her tiptoes and ruffled the boy’s hair.
“Boyfriend?” George questioned as he sat down on a hospital bed that lined the hallway.
Amory slightly stiffened as she sat down next to him. She wasn’t even thinking about that when she aid it. “Yeah?” She said but it came out as more of a question. “I mean, if you want to be, you can be. I don’t want to rush you or anything.”
George just chuckled. they really were similar. They both rambled and stuttered when they were flustered. “Yeah,I like being called your boyfriend.”
“How are you holding up, Amy?” George asked after a moment of silence.
“I… don’t know, really.” They say together on a nearby hospital bed, the man holding his girlfriend by the waist. “It was a hadr day. I mean, Cristina’s fine but…” Her voice began to crack. “But she might not have been. You know I love taking care of all of you. I can’t imagine it any other way, but it gets exhausting, making sure everyone is okay.” The girl let a tear fall, George wiping it with his thumb. “It was a terrible day for both Meredith and Cristina, and I’m their person and they are mine, but sometimes I feel like I have to hold everything together for everyone…” The girl’s head flopped against the boy’s shoulder, as she let another tear fall. Amory composed herself adn finished off after a few seconds. “I love taking care of them, I do. Who else would if it wasn’t me, but it can get so overwhelming sometimes. Thank you for being the one who takes care of me, George. If it wasn’t for you I think I would forget myself most of the times.” The girl almost whispered.
At that, George pressed a kiss to her forehead, his arm around her shoulders as her face was pressed against his chest. “No need to thank me, Amy. I’ll always take care of you, no matter what happens.”
the rosy-fingered dawn
Arizona watches the grass of their backyard sway in the wind through the window above the kitchen sink. She must look just like her mother. It’s something she’s accepted, recently, something she’s learning to come to peace with, even as she takes the time to remember this exact, breathtakingly perfect moment. She wants to hold onto this for as long as possible. It’s not a very peaceful instinct to cling to things the way she does, but she’s working on that. She’s learning. She hasn’t learned.
Callie comes up behind her, wrapping her arms around Arizona’s waist and hooking her chin over Arizona’s shoulder. “Whatcha thinkin’?”
Everything. Nothing. Too much and too little and nothing she can say out loud.
“We should get chickens,” Arizona says instead.
----
Or: Arizona's weird thing for chickens finally gets its day in the sun.
Where We Might End Up - Lexie Grey x OC fanfic Chapter 1: Three Brothers and a Double Leg Transplant Case
Chapter 1: Three Brothers and a Double Leg Transplant Case
Four Months Ago
Seattle Grace Hospital wasn't that different from any other hospitals he's been. With its shiny floors and the combined smell of strong disinfectant and lemon air freshener permeating across the reception area, Eric Keaton still hadn't thought of any reason why and how, suddenly, some people he knew in New York chose to work at this hospital.
What's so special about it? He thought.
Eric continued to gaze around as he moved towards the reception desk. With his head stuck looking up the catwalk, he almost hit a group of interns rushing in towards the 'pit' - hearing one mumbled something about a multiple MVC and 'Nazi' — whatever that means. He swerved to avoid the running interns, yet failed, as he hit the last two, who seemed to be lagging behind with the rest.
"Apologies," Eric uttered.
The man gestured at him, muttering 'sorry' and waving his hand as the other, a woman, kept pulling the man's coat and asking him about something. Eric kept an eye on them as they walked away, observing the short-haired brunette who seemed to be familiar but shook it aside as he continued at the reception area. He returned his gaze to the two, their conversations echoing throughout the empty lobby.
"Just so you know, I-I won't tell them, I won't... won't tell them that you didn't pass—" The girl intern babbled, staggering beside the guy.
"O - kay... thank... you? I guess." The intern paused, shaking his head in confusion, "but really, you can tell them. It doesn’t matter." The guy talked and looked at his companion, continuing towards the emergency room, "How about you? Have you talked to Meredith about...?"
"W-why?" She chuckled nervously. "H-have you?" Their voices faded as they turned out of sight.
The receptionist called Eric and asked what he needed.
"Good... morning," Eric paused, shaking his head. He looked at the receptionist and continued, "Yes, uh, sorry, just... can you please point me towards the Chief of Surgery's office?"
As soon as the receptionist pointed the direction towards the office, a deep voice echoed throughout the hall.
"Keaton?"
Eric turned where the voice was coming from, and there stood two men, a black haired standing still, the other, the grey haired strutting his way towards him.
"Eric Keaton in the flesh," Mark blurted as he walked towards Eric, "What brings you here, man?" He said with a wide grin on his face. Typical Mark Sloan.
It has been years since Eric had seen Mark. The last time that he did, it was in New York, with Mark telling Eric how lucky Derek was, having Addison. Funny little thing, after a year, news had spread that Derek left New York because he saw Addie cheating with Mark.
Fast forward three years later, the two of them together, minus the woman that broke their friendship.
Eric offered a handshake that Mark made into a hug, "You don't shake your brother's hand, dumbass."
"Yeah, lord knows where they've been," Eric blurted out as he pulled out of the hug.
Mark stared at him, his arm on Eric's shoulder. His mouth gaped and then developed into a teethy smile as he punched Eric's arm, "Even I missed your snarky remarks!"
Mark paused and turned towards the dark haired man standing a few feet away from them. Eric turned and stared at Derek Shepherd as he made his way towards him and the gorilla who's squeezing him.
He had known Derek Shepherd longer than he had known Mark. When he saw Derek Shepherd at a conference in Oxford, Eric knew that he needed to train under him. And, he did. Eric went to New York and worked under Derek Shepherd's tutelage. There he met Mark Sloan - Eric gained a family with the two. It was a better time, he thought. It was a time where 'Addison and Derek', the perfect couple, were a thing; Derek and Mark were best friends and the only thing Derek was angry about Mark was when Mark would bring a stranger to family meals. Derek was essentially content and happy.
Now, Eric stared at Derek, looking at how the years had been cruel to the once content and happy neurosurgeon. He had been in a dark place — betrayal. Seattle Grace might have been the only thing that held him together.
Derek stood in front of him, hesitating, looking at Mark and then looking down the floor. He breathed deeply and finally looked at Eric. He raised his hand for a handshake. Eric shook his hand. Derek pulled a smile, nodded, and walked away towards the emergency room. Eric followed Derek with a stare, his brow arched slightly. He looked down as he continued to ponder.
"Not what you expect, kid?" Mark uttered as he turned and stood beside Eric.
"Yeah," He paused. "still waiting for his traditional lashing-out-and-damning-me-to-hell bit," Eric answered as he chuckled dryly. Mark stared at him as Eric looked at him and smiled.
"Well... for one, you didn't cheat with his ex-wife and flirted with his girlfriend when you got here," Mark said. Eric looked at Mark with furrowed brows.
"No, I just ruined his youngest sister's life," Eric said wryly.
Mark scoffed, "No, you didn't. You just dated the wrong girl."
"The worse thing you can do other than being caught in the throes with his ex-wife, is to sleep with his sister," He paused, "Which you did both - and sisterss" Eric emphasized, "you — did you tell Derek about –"
"not the conversation you want to share with him, if you wanted to live a happy life. Case in point..." Mark gestured his hand to him, "So... what brings you here in Seattle?"
- - - - -
Catwalk Outside Chief of Surgery Office
Meredith and Cristina were walking at the catwalk when Derek walked past them, brows deeply furrowed, ears flaming red.
"Hey," Meredith tried to call him, but Derek just glanced at her and continued walking inside the office.
"I don't think it's..." Derek's stern voice echoed at the corridor as the door closed.
"Well, he's having the time of his life," Cristina blurted out as they stopped.
Meredith turned back, pulling Cristina with her to watch through the office window.
Alex and George saw the twisted sisters camping at the cat walk. They walked closer to see why. Meredith glanced at the two who had just stopped.
"George!" Meredith lashed at her intern, "I told you to—"
"Still working!" He implied, raising the chart he's holding while his stare was shifting on the commotion inside the chief’s office and on the chart he’s holding.
"Who's the dude?" Alex asked as he ate a bag of chips.
Cristina cringed as the crisp sound from Alex's mouth was echoing right closely by her right ear. The crumbs were falling on her coat. Cristina grabbed the bag of chips from Alex and ate it obnoxiously in front of Alex as a retaliation. Alex made a face as he grabbed the bag back.
George looked away from the chart and stared past the window glass. He stared at the doctor who was dressed sharply, trimmed and tall. His dark hair is neatly combed. Eyes are brown and narrow, thick straight eyebrows and sharp cheekbones. The groove under his pointed nose are defined. And, his narrow lips remained stiff as Derek continued to argue with him. The scene reminded them of Mark when he first went to Seattle, with the neurosurgeon fuming with anger at his visit.
"That's...” George paused, looking up at the ceiling as he contemplated deeply, trying to remember the name. He'd read about him in a medical journal, along with a procedure he did that seemed like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie. “I think that’s... Dr. Eric Keaton. He pioneered the procedure on hand transplantation," He paused as he closed the chart he is holding, "I heard, he's bringing a patient here for a transplant surgery?"
"What? He's the Hopkins guy who did the hand transplant surgery?" Alex asked.
"No... I think he's from Mass Gen?" George argued.
"Yeah, but he did it when he's in Hopkins," Alex stressed. "Check your sources, O' Malley.”
"Wait — wait..." Cristina pulled Alex's arms as she continued, "you're saying... he's doing a leg transplant here?" Cristina paused, "We're doing a leg transplant surgery? The first leg transplant surgery like... in the country?!"
Mark walked slowly towards the group clumped at the catwalk. Their voices were mumbles from far away, and as he went nearer, Mark could hear what they were talking about. He approached them, with his hands crossed behind his back.
Cristina exclaimed, "Why is Shepherd not happy? Why he's not happy, Mer? He should be happy like... happy." She added, flapping her hands in excitement.
"So, tell me, doctors," Mark paused, standing behind Alex and leaning in, "When does standing and prying become your jobs?" He added.
The residents haven't noticed him as they continued peaking through the window, seeing Derek Shepherd arguing with Richard Webber and the new doctor.
"H-h-He's making big gestures, look?" Cristina blurted, pointing at Derek. "Oooh... he's angry. Last time I saw him like that was when he was arguing with the chief about Sloan." She then cackled.
Mark cleared his throat loudly to get their attention. When George saw Mark, he quickly grabbed his charts and bolted. Alex shifted his gaze to Sloan and tapped Cristina and Meredith on the shoulders.
"What?! stop it, Al—" Cristina stopped. Noticing Dr. Sloan, she fled. Alex followed Cristina.
Meredith watched as her friends ran away, confused at what's happening. She looked behind her and saw Mark Sloan settling beside her. She turned, looking back at the office.
"Are you going in?" Meredith asked Mark.
"Yes."
"What's going on, really?"
"You should ask Derek about that," Mark answered. He left Meredith and entered the office. Meredith decided to follow her friends and walked away.
- - - - -
It took another hour before the meeting was finished. It concluded with yelling and slamming of the office door as Derek walked out of the office.
"You brought him here!" Derek shouted at Mark, who's following Derek.
"Oh, come on! You are literally beside me when we saw him earlier." Mark paused, "It's not like you and I working in Seattle a damn secret.”
Both of them stopped in the middle of the catwalk as Derek paced.
"Why is he here?" Derek asked, glancing at Mark as he paced.
"He just said why. He needs our help," Mark replied.
"Why is he really here?" Derek emphasized, hands on his hips, still pacing.
"For the record, I didn't know any of this," Mark put his right hand on his waist, with the other, he gestured, "He said he asked Addison..."
"Addison?" Derek stopped pacing and looked at Mark.
"He told me... w-wait? What are you doing?" Mark asked as Derek pulled his phone to call Addison.
"Eric is here," Derek said over the phone, "I know, you know. Just — tell me why... n-no! I know that's not the only reason... just tell me... What?! Importan- Hello?" Derek put his phone inside his pocket, "She hung up."
"Richard already said yes to..."
"And I am saying no," Derek cut him.
"It's not yours to decide. It's a plastics case," Mark said, crossing his arms.
"Then, you are going to say no," Derek said as he walks away.
CT Room
"So, are you going to tell me about the new guy?" Meredith asked Derek as they were checking the CT results of a patient. Derek stared at the scans in front of him, arms crossed tightly on his chest, brows still furrowed.
"He's not the new guy. He's going to leave soon." Derek corrected her, his voice strained.
"Okay," Meredith said, waiting for Derek's answer.
Derek knew that she's just trying to help. He sighed, putting down his hand. Derek looked at her and said calmly, "He's... no one."
"Seeing you acting like that makes him not 'no one', Derek, who is he and why are you so angry at him?" Meredith continued, now she's the one crossing her arms.
Derek sighed as he stared at Meredith. A few minutes later, Derek gave no answer. Meredith looked at him, brows arching up as she waited.
"Fine, so, we're angry at him then?" Meredith leaned her head sideways, looking straight into Derek's eyes as he tried to look away. "Do I need to be angry at him, too?"
"No... I...” Derek stammered, “w-we are not doing this right now." He pulled out the scans from the viewer and walked away.
"What? What are we doing?" Meredith turned and looked at Derek as he walked out, "Derek?!"
Hospital Cafeteria
Mark kept his stare at Eric as they hang out at the cafeteria, his eyebrows arched. Eric glanced at Mark, noticing him staring for too long. He then stared back at the mug he's holding.
"Are you making a hole in my face?" He paused, "Or, Is Derek twisting your ass right now?" Eric asked while looking down, taking a sip of his tea.
"Nice choice of words." Mark sighed before continuing, "You are making a point, that it? That's why you're here?" Eric sighed. Mark continued, "Or — ah, a grand gesture." Mark slapped his legs as he added, "I did that too, went here in Seattle and, you know..." Eric gawked at him with a slight amused smile on his face. Mark noticed it and stammered, "W-what?"
"Good lord, you and your grand gestures," Eric said as he put down his cup on the table. He sighed deeply as he stared back at Mark.
"What? What?!"
"There's,  a very thin line between your notion of grand gestures for your male friends and uh, something you do for... you know..." Eric paused, "just... no distinction if you’re doing it romanticaly or..." Mark glared at him as his mouth gaped, "I won't be shocked when there's talk about you and Derek being... more than..." He murmured to himself as he looked away.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"The things is...” Eric looked back at Mark, “I am not making a point. Is it difficult to believe that I'm asking for your help?" He added, "It could be if I'm only asking for your help."
"H-W... wh..." Mark stammered, brows furrowed. He gestured with disbelief, "I-I don't buy your excuse."
Eric sighed, as he stated, "Let's just — " He paused laying his hand on the table, "Let's assume I'm lying. Why did I come here if I could have the surgery done at Mass General instead? The fact that I got an entire division to back me up, a foundation, and one of the top five teaching hospitals in the country supporting me, instead I came here to ask help from two surgeons who work at a hospital that ranks 12th.
"Way to rub that salt in the wound, kid." Mark contemplated on his statement and leaned back on his on chair. He glanced at Eric as he sighed. "You have a point."
On the other side of the cafeteria, Callie walked towards Meredith, as she continued to stare at Mark and Eric.
"So, he's not... I mean, he's not like their love child, right?" Callie said, her voice breaking as she suppressed her laughter. Meredith looked at her, amused at the thought, "Right, but there's the similarity there. Maybe he's Mark Sloan's brother or something? Or Derek's..." Callie paused as Meredith stared at her, "Okay, I'm just gonna — I'm..." She lifted her tray and prowled towards Mark and Eric.
Callie stood just behind Mark Sloan, smiling awkwardly at Eric. She held her tray with her right hand and pulled Mark's scrub with her left. Eric stared at her as she pulled Mark's scrub and cleared her throat before adding, "Aren't you gonna introduce me or what?"
Mark turned behind him, "Yes, Dr. Callie Torres this is Dr. Eric Keaton," Callie and Eric shook hands, as Callie beamed. "Eric this is Callie Torres, Ortho." Callie put her tray on the table and sat beside Mark.
"Pleasure meeting you, Dr. Torres," Eric greeted.
"Wow, courteous. Soo... unlike you," She whispered to Mark.
Mark smiled as he continued, "He was... a colleague from New York."
"So, you two not related?" Callie asked Mark.
Eric heard her and answered, "No. There may be some similarities... but, I am in no way related to him.” Mark leaned away, scoffing, as Eric continued, “He's just my... teacher... They were my teachers."
"You... teaching?" Callie shot a disbelieving glance towards Mark. "When did you ever teach... I mean..." Callie stifled her laughter. Realizing she's talking to Mark with a stranger, she looked at the amused stranger sitting in front of them and stopped, "Word vomit." She whispered and paused; cleared her throat, sat down straight and continued, "So, you're on plastics?"
"Neuro." Mark answered with disdain.
"Oh, you worked under Shepherd." Callie pointed out, "That's more plausible." Mark glared at her.
"Yeah, you can say that. Mark..." Eric paused, looking at the irritated plastic surgeon, "...he's more a teacher in wordplay."
"Hey! I taught you some techniques in plastics, too, you ungrateful brat," Mark protested, "plastics and women."
"Women?” Eric snorted a laugh. “Please.” Eric countered. “If teaching about women means inviting me to every bar in New York instead of Derek since you’ll hear a scolding from him about how you sleep around, then you really thought me well, Sir."
"That's what I meant," Mark said with a smirk.
"So..." Callie hesitated to ask. She fixed her loosed hair and tucked it in her ear. "I just..."
"You want to know why Derek Shepherd is angry at me?" Eric filled in her words. “Aren’t we all?”
Present day Patient's Private Room
Dr. Keaton is standing beside the patient, with the patient's fiancé. The teams for the transplantation watched as Alex Karev presented the patient.
"Timothy St. John, 28... both legs were amputated due to traumatic injuries sustained in a car accident..."
"The procedure will involve two teams. One for each leg," Dr. Shepherd started explaining the procedure to the patient, "Both Dr. Keaton and I will connect the blood vessels under a microscope. While Dr. Torres and Dr. Sloan will be in charge with the bones, muscle and skin flaps. These are your teams."
"It seems half of the hospital... are here," Mr. St. John joked as he held his fiancé.
"Well, the procedure will need all the people we can get, Mate. Don't worry. You are in the most capable hands. Dr. Torres, Dr. Sloan and Dr. Shepherd are the best in their field," Dr. Keaton said.
Four Months Ago Surgical Skills Lab
The teams met the patient of the transplant surgery for the first time. Mark Sloan introduced the teams and explained the procedure. Callie and Eric also added the risks and challenges the patient would experience before, during and after surgery. Derek remained silent, staring at the patient and his fiancé who are just about to start their life. He clutched his hands as he felt frustration. He thought, there are so many things that could happen and the risks and consequences outweigh the benefits. He didn't want to be a part of a surgery that could stake young lives. Derek absentmindedly walked out of the room.
Eric followed Derek and saw him out at the hall. He was leaning on the nurses' station counter, hands turning white, as he clutched harder. Derek noticed Eric.
"You will not do the surgery, not here, in my hospital, not on my watch!"
"This is not. your hospital. You are not the one who will decide," Eric answered back. "Richard said yes."
"I will not be a part of this. Anyway you see it, this procedure is unethical..." Derek implied.
Eric scoffed, "Oh, please, you are not thinking about how this is unethical or not." He interrupted.
"...it's unethical and highly experimental." Derek emphasized.
"Doing a highly experimental surgery, never stopped you before," Eric said, "You are making this about Amelia."
Derek stopped and shot a glare at him. His face is turning red, "Yes! I am making this about Amy."
"Knew it."
"I am making this about Amy..." He paused, looking around as staff walked by, he gritted his teeth as he continued, "If I was there, I may damn well prevented her for doing that surgery," He blurted out with gritted voice.
"The surgery that brought back a mother and a wife to her family?"
"The surgery that took a toll on my sister's life that made her take drugs!" He shouted, "You may not see why you are to blame for what happened, but you are to blame! You. Put. That idea in her head."
"Doesn't it occur to you, that having no faith on your sister also took a toll?" Derek pushed him, hand clenching his shirt, trembling with rage.
"You don't get to talk to me about her," Derek warned. Mark and Richard saw them. Mark ran to them to stop them from fighting.
"What is going on here?!" Richard demanded. Mark pulled Derek off Eric.
"You are stopping this surgery, Richard. Or I'll walk," Derek said. Derek shrugged off Mark's hand. He then walked away, still steaming with rage.
A few days after the argument with Eric and Derek. Tests were administered to the patient. After the tests, Derek visited the patient's room and checked his vitals. He was looking at his chart when the patient woke up.
"Hey, I'm just checking at your charts here," Derek said, "How are you feeling?"
"Half awake," The patient joked, "Get it?"
"Doctor, I know you don't approve of this surgery. I can see it in your face. I would too — think it's impossible, but I was the one who pushed Dr. Keaton for this surgery," The patient paused. "You have a wife, Dr. Shepherd?"
"I do," He answered.
"Imagine, everyday she would wake up early to lift you in and out of your bed. Bathe you. Wipe you. Go to work. Cook for you. — That is not a life I wanted for her," He continued. "I was a manly man, Dr. Shepherd. I want to be the one who goes to work, who will lift her up. I want to walk with her. And that accident made me half of who I was, literally too." He chuckled, "I looked for a way to bring it back. And the only way I saw was Dr. Keaton. I asked him for help, but he wouldn't do the procedure without you. I asked him to transfer me here so I could change your mind, to see me, and empathize."
"It's a very complicated procedure..."
"If it means having to walk with my Liz, I'm willing to take the risk."
Present Day PACU
After the gruesome surgery that took more than half the day, they transferred the patient back to the recovery room for observation. The surgery was successful. The next step for the patient is intense observation and therapy. Dr. Keaton is standing just outside the room. Derek saw him and walked beside him.
"I have been thinking... you might have been right," Eric uttered without looking at him. Derek stayed staring in front, at the patient's room. Eric hesitated before he continued, "The first leg transplant that I did had gone horribly... bad. The patient rejected the limb, and uhm, we amputated it," He paused as he looked down at his fidgeting hands, "I, uh... did each procedure splendidly. But I became overconfident. I knew the patient was not entirely ready of what he would experience because of the surgery, but I did it anyway," He paused, "I learned... from it. After that, I decided not to do it again; to put anyone in that — torture." Eric looked up and stare at the patient inside the room, "St John, he pleaded for my help. I said no, over and over again. I told him I'm not at my best, and to do the surgery, I need the best neurosurgeon" Eric looked at Derek, "When I said I need you, I meant it. You're my mentor, and the best neurosurgeon that I know. If anyone would pull me back to earth, it was you... I'm very sorry about Amy. I believe in her because I know she's a great neurosurgeon." Eric paused as his voice broke. He cleared his throat and added, "...and I didn't think it would... I'm sorry."
Derek stared at Eric as he looked down on the floor. Derek tapped Eric's shoulder. Eric looked at him. He nodded and smiled at his former student — Derek's own way of showing his affirmation. Derek then walked away, leaving Eric.
