Scamming the scammer

John Constantine was the biggest headache Danny had managed to get, ever. After becoming King he did not think that his first task would be to solve the man's soul problems.

And it seemed quite incredible to him that the hellbazer would consider selling his soul as if it were a used car that he wants to get rid of to buy a new one. He was aware that he needed a soul, wasn't he? That it was not possible to buy a new one? Because he didn't want to be the one to inform him if that was not the case.

To top it off, beings from different domains within his kingdom came explicitly to claim the British's soul, which didn't even make sense, there were thousands of souls! Why did everyone want the same one? And why did he have to be the one to take care of it?

Completely frustrated, he placed all the paperwork for John Constantine in an empty room and locked the door. He smiled as he came up with a plan to improve the situation, it might be worth it.

That's how a drunk John Constantine found himself signing a dubious contract in exchange for the power to turn any liquid into beer, he didn't bother to read the contract, most demons just wanted his soul and this guy looked so human, with a presence so light it must be a minor demon for sure.

This turned out to be a bad decision when the next morning he found himself trapped in a room full of documents, the door locked. Taped to the door was a green note that said "Enjoy doing your own paperwork sir, I hope you're pleased with yourself", and well, maybe he should have read that contract after all.

I feel like we don’t talk about the fact that in canon the reason ghosts are destroyed by water is because water is constantly changing and never confined to one form, while ghosts are the opposite: unable to change, always remaining the way they were when they died. Genuinely one of ninjago’s best worldbuilding moments imo and also a fantastic way to look at ghosts. Of course you’re going to be angry if you’ve died and can’t move on from the moment of your death and the very thing that’s able to destroy you being the embodiment of change… A++ concept

You know, even though I am sad that animus magic isn’t around anymore, I honestly wouldn’t have hated if this had been the actual reason it disappeared. There’s something poetic about the universe keeping a cosmic balance. Nothing comes for free. There is always a price to pay and the price of animus magic is the warping and devouring of the soul of those who use it and once that balance was disrupted it fades away. Animus magic kind of started off as this mysterious/sinister power and while I do like that it is played off as just another inheritable trait I also think it should be remain weird and mysterious and sinister.

Reading Emma again and it's crazy how much of her life is handling or manipulating her father. It's constant. Like even in just the first three chapters:

"Let me remind you very calmly for the millionth time, papa. The carriage driver would be happy to go to Randalls, remember? Remember how we agreed about this?"

"Yes father, I will give Miss Bates a small bit of tart" (gives entire tart) "Yes papa, our eggs are very wholesome, one will not hurt Mrs. Bates" (gives Mrs. Bates three) "Yes papa, gruel is delicious" (passes around the wine and tarts again)

It is basically her job to be manipulative. Because her father both wants guests and wants to starve them (the only dinner Emma misses, Mrs. Bates doesn't get to eat). The only way to keep her father happy is to sneakily do stuff he hates.

Is it any wonder she manipulates Harriet "for her own good"? That's how she has been trained to behave! She's been gaslighting her father for the greater good for 8 years!! She's taught a way to survive her situation that works well and then you expect her not to use it in other areas of her life?

as true as the jokes about “everyone wants to rewrite ninjago” are i feel like smthn people forget when complaining about the inconsistencies of the show is that…. it wasn’t planned? it’s not like most other animated shows lately - it didn’t start with a deeply fleshed out world or a meticulously designed pitch bible with grandiose plans for a long-term story or character arcs. the ninja don’t originally get their powers from heredity because they weren’t hereditary powers yet. the magic system doesn’t make sense bc they literally just made it up as they went! they go back and forth on stuff like whether non-elementals can learn spinjitzu bc it’s a collaborative piece of media made by people with vastly different levels of control over the story, the animation, the sets, etc. that varied over the course of the series. it’s totally understandable and exciting to see so many people reworking the early stuff with the lore and logic later seasons introduced but i personally feel that… if you’re doing that. you need to understand why the show is like that instead of writing it off as being bad and shitty. it was working with what it had. it’s only what it is now because of that awkward troubleshooting phase, not in spite of it

When you get right down to it, despite their outward appearances and what they would say to anyone listening, in their hearts of hearts YQY values competency over kindness, but considers himself useless and kind, and SQQ values goodness over effectiveness, but considers himself incapable of good, but effective. This is the core of why they both love each other and hate themselves—YQY's self-loathing revolves around failure, and SQQ's revolves around his perceived (and then increasingly self-actualized) moral deficit.

It's worth noting that YQY does also believe in SQQ's capacity for good in a way possibly no one else really could, and from SQQ's perspective YQY's skill and power are glaringly obvious, but the things they value most in each other—and the things which estrange them further in their own minds—is that YQY is good and kind in ways SQQ doesn't believe he ever could be, and SQQ is capable and talented when YQY only sees his own failure.
