Seance in Gravity's Rainbow
The most distinctive element of Pynchon’s account of the late-modern moment, and the element that makes it so vital, is its uniting of theological and technological reflection. His work seems to suggest that a properly theological account of late modernity will also be a technological account, and a usefully technological one will also be theological. That Pynchon seeks the union of these two typically divergent perspectives is made quite explicit in a scene from his most famous novel, Gravity’s Rainbow (1973), set primarily during World War II. There he depicts a séance in which a group of Germans from “the corporate Nazi crowd,” makers of armaments, attempt to contact the spirit of Walter Rathenau, who had been foreign minister in the Weimar government until his assassination by a reactionary terrorist group, Organization Consul, in 1922.

I don’t know which is weirder - the actual history of the Jet Propulsion Lab or Pynchon’s fictional “version” in Gravity’s Rainbow (whoever they are)

Just because you can read something doesn’t mean you should. Anyone who has read the entirety of Gravity’s Rainbow scares me.

Someone on Reddit said that Gravity’s Rainbow is an inverse grail myth and low key im in love with that. Like there are so many connections- the S-gerat as the inverse of the grail, the phallic spear, and the spear is what wounded the fisher king in the first place. The Tchitcherine-Enzian connection that mirrors the Parcival-Feirefiz connection (and also makes Slothrop a brother to them, since he too is a child of the Rocket in some ways and has his own associations with blackness). Slothrops constant run-ins with maidens like the classic grail myths. The general emphasis on Germanic folklore. But the religious angle of the Grail quest is shattered by the fact that everyone seems to have their own private God now (Pointsman’s Pavlov, Enzian’s Rocket, Slothrop’s Them). And Slothrop, rather than finding the Rocket, dissolves into total madness (although maybe that is finding the Rocket? Avoiding the Mammon of the Raketen-Stat by embracing detonation and dispersal?) IMO there’s a definite theme of constant, cyclical flow between opposites, a sort of dispersal-then-reformation that constantly occurs. A perpetual union of opposites that results in explosion. Temporary syzygy. Very Wasteland. Grrrr i love this book

A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now.

Wild that not only does a ponified version of Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls appear in the My Little Pony comics, but she’s actually a major part of Rarity’s motivation in this arc.

hiii lindi im still in school but i just wanted to tell u that u gave me the courage to stand up against the narrative the school has set for us about palestine and israel, ive printed out hundreds of palestinian flags and me and like 10 others are sticking them around school. thank you for making me courageous. <3
I’m so proud of you, anon. Truly. And assign the thanks where it should be assigned, to yourself for putting in the effort and bravery to do something like that. It may seem small to others, but if there’s one person at your school that feels safer and more bolstered by seeing one of those flags, it was worth it.
Much love to you anon.
