Still think it’s hilarious that Kratos looked at Faye, a woman that regularly wielded a magic godkilling boomerang axe with ease, performed magical warding spells, and was considered a revered warrior and respected entity among other respected beings, and still thought: “yeah, that’s a normal mortal human person”.

Idk i just think it’s interesting how Freya thinks killing Kratos would’ve been revenge for Baldur even though for them to be truly even stevens she would have to kill Atreus. Freya never, ever tried to attack Atreus; every attack we see in game is focused on Kratos. In the opening fight, Atreus is knocked out of the sled but not seriously injured and During Vanadís 100% of her focus was on Kratos.
It was never really about getting revenge on Kratos; Freya forgave him the moment he blocked Atreus from mauling her, it just takes her a minute to realize it and a little bit longer to say it out loud. Freya has been so dead set on getting revenge because Kratos is accessible to her. Odin, who is really to blame, is untouchable, safe in Asgard behind Hrimthur’s wall. Kratos is merely a target she can hit Right Now. She’s so angry, so hurt and as far as she knows, there is no way to reach Odin; not until Atreus tells her they are going to find Týr in Svartalfheim. She begins to think there may be hope to destroy Odin, but instead of asking for help she attacks. Freya is unused to relying on anyone but herself. She’s been lied to and let down by nearly every other man in her life, why would this one be any different.
The vines are when Kratos realizes Freya forgives, or will forgive, him. He sees her power in that moment, hears & feels her anger. But Freya finally has taken a moment to figure some shit out. In that one vulnerable moment Freya could have crushed Kratos instead of that rock and they both know it. I think this is also the moment Kratos realizes just how much Freya has truly been held back. This is the closest to full strength he’s ever seen her; Kratos knew she was strong, a warrior but never knew Freya at her peak. And he still has not. He may not have realized how formidable she was until this fight, he knew her determination, her indomitable will, not her true physical strength and abilities. It’s here he understands why Odin bound her to Midgard, bound her powers and took away her ability to fight.
To Forgive or Kill is so important, but that’s not when she forgives Kratos. Vanadís is the true forgiveness, To Forgive or Kill is when Freya finally admits it to herself

Is it weird, that we never got an answer on who caused " The Grand Culling of the Wyrms", in God of War and God of War Raganrok? Just to remind, it was an event, which resulted in the demise of many Dragons in the realms.
The reason why it was carried out and by whom is still unknown.
I myself think it was the gods, trying to gain the trust on the dwarfs and humans, and while it's not confimerd or anything, i like to think it was Vali or Urll who carried it.
Still kinda weird we did not get theses guys in ragnarok.
tbh i write it off as just a bit of worldbuilding to establish that dragons aren't a common sight anymore, so the few we see are special as they are survivors of a great event in the past. also to kind of set the world as sort of "past it's prime", nobody around to kill dragons anymore, either because they are so rare or because there aren't people powerful enough to hunt them down. possibly both!
it's a common trope in fantasy, that ages wear down magic and things aren't as grand or powerful as they once were. for instance, Lord Of The Rings itself is kind of apost-apocalyptic setting, all the cool things happened long ago during the Silmarillion books, and we're seeing a world long past it's prime.
THAT SAID, i do think lots of gods we don't see in GOWR are um, dead, including Vali and Urll xD the first game goes to great lengths to explain how the Aesir-Vanir war took a massive toll on both sides, and not all who live in Asgard and Vanaheim ARE gods, some of them are common people! so i imagine the toll was in fact among gods, and what were once large proud factions are just a handful of individuals now. at least that's how i interpret it ajhdbjawbd

Tell me your thoughts about gameplay and story integration in video games :3
(THANKS ILY TOO!)
Video games are a super interesting medium because it's all about leveraging player behavior and choice. A lot of game design fundamentals are about giving the player freedom, or the illusion of freedom. The game maker sets the rules, and the player organically develops behaviors and strategies within those rules. If you want the player to act a certain way, you have to encourage them to act in that way. (Watch one of the bazillion analysis videos on Super Mario Bros. World 1-1 sometime.)
In games there are ways to punish a player (death, losing progress, jumpscares, etc) and there are ways to reward a player (score go up, unlock new thing, get more power, etc). Story can be part of that, and it can go beyond "play well = good end, play poorly = bad end."
I think, if you're going to use a video game to tell your story, you should really take advantage of it, you know? Flex the medium. Leverage the inherent immersion that comes with the player Interacting With The Game. Inscryption and Undertale are So Video Game that you can't adapt it to a different medium without significant rework. They are video games because they have to be video games. That doesn't make them automatically good, but a good storyteller would choose the medium that works best with their story and that confidence just oozes out, in a good way.
You don't even have to get all 4th wall meta with your video game plot. In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the main Gimmick is that you have a time-traveling dagger. You can use it to make combat sequences easier, you can use it to solve puzzles, but it's also integral to the entire experience. The time travel sets up the framed narrative, which pays homage to the literature that serves as the game's inspiration. The central conflict is resolved with the time travel mechanic. In gameplay, you make mistakes, experience consequences in battle, learn and do things correctly the next time around, which is the Prince's entire character arc. Even basic game mechanics are part of the story -- when you save, you get "tips and tricks!" in the form of visions that will help you solve puzzles, but some of those visions are plot-relevant. The menu itself has flavor dialogue that is part of the narrative frame and is also hilarious.
Some other examples: Papers, Please! explores bureaucracy as a tool of dehumanization under authoritarian governements, and the gameplay is all fine print and form-filling and menus. In GOW 2018, there are enemies that have elemental weaknesses, so you end up having to switch weapons. (This is a really common thing to do: new area w/ new enemies requires new weapon.) You unlock the Blades of Chaos so that you can enter Helheim. The Blades also have a backstory, and using them means something in Kratos's character arc, it's a whole Thing. In metroidvanias, you unlock new abilities so you can access new parts of the story and find things you missed the first time around -- really good for worldbuilding and creating a sense of depth to a location (the world of Blasphemous comes to mind). Majora's Mask gives you anxiety.
A buddy once asked if I thought a good plot could carry a crappy game, and my answer is no. You can't absorb the story if the primary mode of interacting with the story is unplayable. If the gameplay is detracting from the story, then you should make a movie or write a novel. Video games are experiences: gameplay should serve story, story should serve gameplay. *Tetris: Effect Voice* it's all connected!
I just enjoy it when stories are told in mediums that suit them best. It's satisfying! It's fun! Makes my brain go :D

meta post abt gow incoming
Honestly, they're both wrong. Kratos is stuck in this cycle of reacting to things rather than taking formative action. However, Atreus is NOT thinking ahead and simply doing--typical 14 yr old behavior, to be honest. Kratos's methods also make sense from what I understand of the first three God of War games. Kratos acting first led to the destruction of the greek pantheon, and tons of needless death (ofc there was plenty of reacting there too.)
Hiding isn't going to keep them safe, but all out war isn't the answer either.

Wow, what a rollercoaster of emotions that was, still have tears in my eyes, Tony Curran and Martin Compston were absolutely outstanding, best I have seen from Compston. Ashley Jensen shows her depth as a serious actress and I can't wait to see her take the lead role in Shetland. The guys that played the younger versions of Tully and Jimmy. The two oart show has impressed me so much it has prompoted me to buy the book that it is based on, available on kindle for £1.89 on the link below. If you;re a bit saft, like me, get your hankies out if you watch this, you'll find it on the BBC iPlayer

i just want to let ya’ll know :   post gow (2018)  atr.eus IS NOT , i repeat IS NOT an independent being .  yes , he had that fucking brutal battle in alfheim alone while kr.atos was in alfheims light , but that was one time and we saw what that did to him .  i don’t see atr.eus as being a super independent being until kra.tos is gone ( as much as i hate the idea of kra.tos leaving atr.eus : death , ect . ) like it’s only been a day ya’ll , he ain’t gonna go being an independent fucker after being bed ridden his entire childhood to the point he says to kra.tos he never thought he would leave his bed or that house or those woods .  he needs kra.tos .  he depends on kra.tos .   he was begging his mom to come back at the beginning of the game because he couldn’t be alone .  atr.eus is NOT an independent being .  he’s not codependent either though , he can protect himself .  but lbr the boy wants to be with his dad .  so like there’s no point to this at all , but i just kinda wanted to write out how i feel post gow affected atr.eus .  cause yeah he grew .  he grew his relationship with his dad .  and he grew into a person he can rely upon more .  but yo he’s still 10 so i mean .

this is an incomplete thought, but i have a brain worm soooo
so we see faye mark the trees with kratos and she’s sad about it. she puts her hand on the tree with the paint, it glows a little, she pretends to be mortal, we cry at the beautiful dialogue and we move on to the next thing.
what if faye is also putting her life force into the trees? we know she was creating a stave, as we see atreus remake the stave in the same way after the bjorn mini boss fight. he puts his hand on the tree, it glows gold/yellow and the stave is re-secured. but what if faye was adding more than just protection?
faye knew she wouldn’t be on the journey with kratos & atreus, she knew her story ended before their journey began. according to mimir in 2018, fimbulwinter wasn’t prophesied to happens for another hundred years. the killing of baldur sped up that timeline. baldur couldn’t have found the cottage without the breaking of the stave. the stave couldn’t be broken until faye’s funeral. etc. etc.
and there’s the line, “you once tried to take charge of your own ending.” so if faye knew she was going to die, did she choose when she was going to die? did she choose when her death would happen to change fate? if she had let nature take its course, would things have turned out the same? if atreus was younger, he’d simply be too young to even survive the journey. if older would the journey have shaped him as much? would kratos have been too absent a father if atreus was older and still mostly being raised by his mother? he’d still be too set in his ways to change the ragnarök prophecy and what was foreseen would have come to pass.
tl,dr: faye put her life force into the stave to jump start The Journey. she saw their future & knew she had to do something.

Welcome to GoW Week! This is a little event to bring the GoW fandom together and give us all a chance to celebrate the things we love about this franchise though different kinds of creations. It’s also the introduction to this blog, godofwarfans, which we’re building as a hub for the GoW community!
Here’s a quick rundown of how this event will work, plus some guidelines:
It’ll take place between Sunday, August 19th and Saturday, August 25th, for a total of seven days
Every day, there will be an assigned theme (see below!) to inspire creations and contributions from the fandom
The themes are only intended as a starting point- feel free to take them in your own direction!
Any kind of creation or contribution is welcome! Art, fic, screencaps, headcanons, edits, meta, or anything else you want to share
You don’t need to participate every day. Feel free to pick and choose in accordance with the themes that inspire you.
If you do want to participate, please reblog this post to spread the word!
Tag your creations with #gowweek so we can find them and reblog them!
Be nice to each other, and most importantly- have fun!
Daily themes:
Sunday: Kratos. Our favourite angry dad.
Monday: Creatures & enemies. Anything to do with the various creatures encountered throughout the games! This can include different gods or other enemies, too.
Tuesday: Memories of Mother. We might not know much about Faye, but we know enough to love her and put her into our creations.
Wednesday: The nine realms. Midgard isn’t the only setting of the new game, and the other eight all have something unique to offer.
Thursday: Atreus. The best boy of them all.
Friday: The past & the future. There’s a lot of playing with the concept of time in Greek and Norse mythology, and it’s always fun to take a look into the past (or future!) of our favourite characters. This can also extend to previous games in the series!
Saturday: Family. A huge theme in the new game, and something that extends past Kratos and his loved ones.
That’s everything, so if you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask!

HEY THERE, GOW FANDOM
Wow. You’re one heck of a group! Like seriously, this fandom is ROCKING.
But I’m gonna bring things down real quick and talk about something important--
REBLOGGING FROM ROLEPLAY BLOGS
Yeah-- I know. Roleplay blogs are rad and sometimes the writing is just so FANTASTIC that you wanna share it with ALL YOUR FOLLOWERS so THEY can share it with ALL THEIR FOLLOWERS etc etc--
But here’s the thing.
WE DON’T MAKE THIS CONTENT FOR YOU TO REBLOG.
Allow me to say this again--
WE DO NOT MAKE THIS CONTENT FOR YOU TO REBLOG.
We get it-- you like how we answered that ask in character. You probably think that response PERFECTLY captures Kratos’ snark or Atreus’ sass. Or that ONE THREAD between the father and son duo that’s so EMOTIONAL you just can’t HELP YOURSELF.
But every time someone REBLOGS something from one of us-- our notifications get fucked up. We lose track of threads-- and THREAD TRACKERS stop working. We’re just normal people behind these screens-- normal folks with anxiety and whatnot-- who might not be so keen on getting REBLOG after REBLOG after REBLOG flooding our feed.
We don’t wanna have to BLOCK you guys-- at least I don’t. I’m glad you like the content I create. I LIKE making this stuff-- headcanons and metas and musings.
BUT THEY’RE NOT FOR THE FANDOM. They’re for my blog. My use. MY INTERPRETATION.
Then why do you put it on tumblr, Max?
Because I want to share that with other people. But there’s a thing called self control. You’re not entitled to posts just because they’re on this website or in a tag-- that kind of mentality is all sorts of nasty.
If you like roleplayers-- why would you want to drive them away from the platform? Keep reblogging our things and we may LEAVE OUR BLOGS altogether. Take our writing to a more private platform where you can’t read all that angsty goodness.
So do us a favor-- LIKE. Don’t reblog. REPLY don’t reblog. Most writers are fine if you send in comments about a thread-- or sending us ASKS telling us how much you like what we do.
But don’t REBLOG our shit.
Thank you.
