"In a week when parts of the state are getting triple-digit temperatures and weather officials urge Texans to stay cool and hydrated, Gov. Greg Abbott gave final approval to a law (HB 2127) that will eliminate local rules mandating water breaks for construction workers."
Ended: 10-minute breaks every four hours so that construction workers can drink water and protect themselves from the sun.
The law also prevents other cities from passing such rules in the future.
Abbott said it would “provide a new hope to Texas businesses struggling under burdensome local regulations. Supporters of the law wanted "flexibility needed to tailor breaks to individual job site conditions".
God help 'em if their project is behind schedule.

Evans was called up for border duty. He drove to San Marcos to tell his superiors he had not volunteered for the mission and did not want to be deployed again. But he returned home with a written notice requiring him to deploy to the border within hours, like thousands of other Texas Guard troops involuntarily mobilized for Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star.
“He was not happy about it,” his grandmother Jo Ann Johnson, who raised him, said in an interview with The Texas Tribune and the Military Times. “He had a lot of concerns. And he really thought he was through and he didn’t have to go back.”
He reported to the border and returned in a flag-draped casket. In April, he drowned after jumping into the Rio Grande to save two migrants being swept away by the current. They survived.
If Evans had been a trooper for the Department of Public Safety or a game warden for the Parks and Wildlife Department, his family would have received a $500,000 lump-sum payment to ease the burden of his passing. If he’d been on federal deployment, they would have gotten $100,000. If he’d been a guard member who died while on state active duty for California or Pennsylvania or Ohio, his family could have expected a payment ranging from $10,000 to $175,000.
But because he was a Texas National Guard member deployed on Operation Lone Star, Evans’ family didn’t get a dime from the state.
Now, state lawmakers want to change that through a bill named after Evans, who was promoted to sergeant posthumously.
The Bishop Evans Act filed by state Rep. Jared Patterson, R-Frisco, and Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, would allow service members on state active duty to have the same access to the state’s death benefits as law enforcement officers who die on the job. For those who leave behind spouses or minor children, the benefits include eligibility for state health insurance and monthly payments of up to $800.

Since Abbott began the deployment of thousands of guard members to the border in March 2021, service members have complained about poor living conditions, inadequate training and equipment, problems getting paid and a lack of a sense of mission. In Evans’ case, a joint Tribune and Military Times investigation revealed that administrative delays in purchasing orders kept hundreds of requested water-rescue ropes and ring buoys from making it to the border.

• If I manage to somehow get lucky enough to keep my kids alive through school, then at work, then shopping at a grocery store, and avoid any terrible illness, they still end up much like me. They’re fucked.
• Nothing like shopping for a Kevlar backpack for your pre-schooler before 7 a.m. only to learn than none on the market protect against a blast from an AR-15.
• Uvalde cops lie. They are cowards. They are partly responsible for the death of 19 children and two adults. But, hey, at least they got to return home safely to their family so they can talk about how hard their job is—handcuffing parents who are begging them to be brave and do the thing they swore to do: protect their community.
• My hope is that the Uvalde cops are all God-fearing Christians so that they can burn in the very hell they made up for people just like themselves.
• Can’t prevent all evil. But we can reduce it. And this gun/mental health/shitty cops thing is a lot to unpack and fix. But, c’mon, we need to have an actual conversation to begin the hard work. It is cowardice to not do so. You hear me, NRA members? You reading this, GOP? This making sense to you, Officer Krupke? Oh, and Gov. Abbott, just curious… you regretting your decision to cut mental health funding in the state? No. Probably not.
• My confidence that this country is not in its final days is running on fumes. And you know what, good. It’s time to take America out back and shoot it. That’s an unfortunate metaphor because really, that’s exactly what we’re doing. Shooting our kids to death and creating a culture of distrust, one without safety is quite literally killing our future.

Texas Antisemitism Executive Order
PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND!!
As many of y'all know by now, I am a Texan. Specifically a Texan in higher education, at a public university. Gov. Abbott's new executive order to have public universities crack down on Anti-Semitic speech directly impacts the students advocating for Palestine.
Phrases such as "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" can now be considered HATE SPEECH!
“Some radical organizations on our campuses engaged in acts that have no place in Texas,” Abbott said in a press release. “Now, we must work to ensure that our college campuses are safe spaces for members of the Jewish community.”
This was never about protecting Jewish people, but protecting Zionists. The order was issued after universities across Texas had issues after Oct. 7th's events. Pro-Palestine and Pro-Israel students were butting heads, and some broke out into fights according to some sources. As a uni student myself, I have seen these conflicting sides in person. Abbott's statement also makes no mention of the Anti-Islamic rhetoric that has also been spreading due to Israel's persecution of Palestinians.
This order calls for all public universities and colleges review their free speech policies, and to lay out in their policies the definition of antisemitism, and punishments for Anti-Semitic rhetoric. All within 90 days of the order's publishment.
Most of this appears to be banking on HB 3257, the bill that introduced Texas' Holocaust, Genocide, And Antisemitism Advisory Commission
Now, there has been some actual pushback on this, from the The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) as well as students and administration from the universities and colleges effected.
“This order not only undermines the principles of free speech and academic freedom but also perpetuates a harmful narrative that equates criticism of Israeli policies with antisemitism,” CAIR-DFW Executive Director Mustafa Carroll said in a statement.

The wordage used by Abbott worries many people, due to the fact that it is so vague. To the point where criticizing Israel and it's government can be considered hate speech.
Please share this around. If it is happening here, it can happen to any state.
Don't stop speaking about Palestine. Don't stop supporting the Palestinian citizens who are displaced right now. Educate your peers, donate if you are able, and don't give up hope.
