Amid a wave of layoffs sweeping across the media industry, writers and editors at CBS News Digital have formed a union with WGA East for the purpose of collective bargaining. An “overwhelming” majority of CBS News Digital’s 46-member bargaining unit signed union cards on Monday, Feb. 5, according to WGA East — and they are asking management to recognize the union. The union covers workers at CBS News digital platforms including CBSNews.com, its mobile website, social-media channels and the CBS News app.

A Texas woman who had sought a legal medical exemption for an abortion has left the state after the Texas Supreme Court paused a lower court decision that would allow her to have the procedure, lawyers for the Center for Reproductive Rights said Monday.
State District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble last week had ruled that Kate Cox, a 31-year-old mother of two from Dallas, could terminate her pregnancy. According to court documents, Cox's doctors told her her baby suffered from the chromosomal disorder trisomy 18, which usually results in either stillbirth or an early death of an infant.
As of the court filing last week, Cox was 20 weeks pregnant. According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, which brought the lawsuit, Cox left the state because she "couldn't wait any longer" to get the procedure.
"Her health is on the line," said Center for Reproductive Rights CEO Nancy Northup. "She's been in and out of the emergency room and she couldn't wait any longer."
In response to Gamble's decision, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton warned a Texas medical center that it would face legal consequences if an abortion were performed.
In an unsigned order late Friday, the Texas Supreme Court then temporarily paused Gamble's ruling.
On Monday, after Cox left the state, the state Supreme Court lifted the pause and ruled against Cox's request, dismissing it as moot.
According to court documents, Cox's doctors had told her that early screening and ultrasound tests suggested her pregnancy is "unlikely to end with a healthy baby," and due to her two prior cesarean sections, continuing the pregnancy puts her at risk of "severe complications" that threaten "her life and future fertility."
The lawsuit alleges that due to Texas' strict abortion bans, doctors have told her their "hands are tied" and she would have to wait until the fetus dies inside her or carry the pregnancy to term, when she will have to undergo a third C-section "only to watch her baby suffer until death."
The lawsuit was filed as the state Supreme Court is weighing whether the state's strict abortion ban is too restrictive for women who suffer from severe pregnancy complications. An Austin judge ruled earlier this year that women who experience extreme complications could be exempt from the ban, but the ruling is on hold while the all-Republican Supreme Court considers the state's appeal.
In the arguments before the state Supreme Court, the state's lawyers suggested that a woman who is pregnant and receives a fatal fetal diagnosis could bring a "lawsuit in that specific circumstance."
According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, Cox v. Texas is the first case since the overturning of Roe v. Wade to be filed on behalf of a pregnant person seeking emergency abortion care. Last week, a woman in Kentucky who is 8 weeks pregnant filed a lawsuit challenging the state's two abortion bans.

This is Mohsen Shekari, 23. He was a cafe barista. He loved serving coffees made by his art. He was a gamer too.
He was arrested on the 3 of Mehr (September 25) during street protests in Tehran and the Revolutionary Court of Tehran accused him of moharebeh for closing Sattar Khan Street and injuring a Basij officer. Moharebeh means fighting with God. They say the Basiji guy's wounds were so superficial the guy didn't get any stitches, meanwhile the police kills protesters and blinds them with no prosecution. So to put it simply, they sentenced him to death because he closed a street! And wounded a Basiji's ego! With the accusation of "waging war against God"! He was executed this morning against public demand to free him (December 8, 2022).
Almost every arrested protester who's been sentenced to death has been labeled with the same accusation: "war against God". Because Khamenei thinks he's God and therefore opposing the regime and his rule is opposing God.
To the western Media who were quick to say iranians are liars and no one is getting executed, where are you now? Why aren't you reporting this?!
Tumblr media
[picture id: this is a screenshot taken weeks ago when executions started. "7 iranians were executed yesterday and the world is staying quite. The Islamic Republic is executing people of Baluchestan because they know it won't headline any news articles. We need to be their voice. Prove them wrong be the voice of Iran." News agencies were contacted but no coverage.]

Helena Hind at MMFA:
Once again, a national broadcast outlet has failed to adequately identify a conservative man-on-the-street source in its television coverage. This time, CBS News omitted any mention of an Arizona activist’s well-documented working relationship with Arizona Senate candidate and election denier Kari Lake.
During a report on Arizona Republicans blocking another effort to repeal Arizona’s near-total abortion ban, CBS News featured a soundbite from Merissa Hamilton, identifying her only as an abortion rights opponent. “We need to save freedom in our state,” said Hamilton. “We need to save our constitution. Our rights are under threat every single day.” Beyond being an “abortion rights opponent,” Hamilton has an illustrious career as both a right-wing operative and a political candidate. Last May, prior to Lake’s October announcement about her Senate run, the Trump ally named Hamilton to lead a ballot-chasing operation, because, in Lake’s words, “we cannot allow them to steal another election from we the people.” [...]
The New York Times similarly quoted Hamilton without making the connection to Lake, but the paper at least noted her position as president of an activist group in Arizona, EZAZ.
In 2020, Hamilton ran for mayor of Phoenix and ultimately lost to the incumbent candidate by a large margin. During the campaign, an investigative report from The Arizona Republic revealed Hamilton’s membership in a private Facebook group filled with far-right conspiracy theories and hateful rhetoric against Muslims and LGBTQ people, which drew condemnation from the Human Rights Campaign. [...] In addition to Lake's well-documented election denial — which includes denying the results of her ill-fated Arizona gubernatorial bid in 2022 — the candidate has a history of flip-flopping. Most recently, she was called out for backtracking in her previous endorsement of Arizona’s 19th-century abortion ban.
CBS interviewed Merissa Hamilton, an anti-abortion activist with ties to the Karl Lake campaign and didn't disclose it to the viewers of CBS Evening News.

A new CBS News poll is another to contribute to the narrative that there is something wrong with President Joe Biden's age while Donald Trump's age and mental fitness are going unquestioned.
But as a young voter and host of "iGen Politics," Victor Shi observed, the same poll shows a record 65% support for Biden among voters under 30. For voters between 30 and 44, Biden enjoys 56% support. The lowest amount of support for Biden comes from those over 65.
The official question read: "If next year's 2024 presidential election is between Joe Biden, the Democrat, and Donald Trump, the Republican, who would you vote for?"
Comparing it to Donald Trump, who had 35% for those under 30, 44% for those ages 30 to 44.
The poll also shows just how important abortion is to young voters. Nearly half of voters under 30 (47%) said that the issue of abortion makes them more likely to vote for Democrats. That compares to 27% who said the GOP stance makes them more likely, and 25% said it didn't matter.
When asked what qualities Americans want in a leader, they said tough (67%), caring (66%), no-nonsense (62%), calm (61%) and energetic (58%). When voters talk about Biden's qualities they see him as calm (63%), predictable (61%), caring (50 percent) and has him at "no-nonsense" just at 35%. By contrast Trump is viewed at 55% on "no-nonsense." That said, he didn't even register on "calm" or "caring."
As Shi assessed, "the media constantly talks about age but they fail to mention other positive things that polling shows — like that the Republican Party is weakening fast or more young voters say they will vote for Biden in 2024. These things also matter…just not to [the mainstream media]."
The toplines of the poll can be read here.
