Lamb's quarters seeds (chenopodium album)
This seed has been found in the stomachs of bog bodies in europe. A related species, c. berlandieri, was domesticated in north america, and was the genetic ancestor of the south american crop species that include quinoa.
I harvested the seedheads and waited for them to dry. I agitated them between my hands, and then I washed off the saponins and chaff as best i could. The water foamed up in the jar that i shook them in. This foam is toxic to fish and can theoretically be added to a body of water to kill/stun fish in the immediate area.
i think thisll make a lovely addition to bread, just like the celosia seeds i've been gathering. The celosia/cockscomb is a less related but still similar plant from africa (most likely, the origin isnt clear)
Considering this species is nonnative but there is a related native variety, i want to try to get ahold of that one instead.
This stuff, including the celosia, is in the amaranth family and is known as a pseudocereal since it's not a true grass seed

Chenopodium berlandieri: A Versatile and Nutritious Crop
History and Origins Chenopodium berlandieri, also known as lamb’s quarters, goosefoot, and pigweed, is a common plant found throughout North America. However, this unassuming plant is more than just a weed. It is a nutritious and versatile crop that has been cultivated by humans for centuries. The earliest evidence of Chenopodium berlandieri cultivation dates back to 3,500 years ago, in the…

I've found the easiest way to store and dispense the abundant harvest of edible weeds in my pots is to puree them down with some red wine vinegar and freeze them into easily accessible, standard portion cubes. It makes it simple to add them to salsas, soups and beans-n-greens. Bonus picture of Herr Pferd Regular and Herr Pferd Rainbow, the horse babies, enjoying a delicious snack. Because horses love wood sorrel and purslane! #eattheweeds #purslane #goosefoot #woodsorrel #puree #cubes https://www.instagram.com/p/CebeiEgFa0I/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Goosefoot was a PeakClan warrior. A quiet dissenter to Fernstar's regime, and supposedly foretold by StarClan to be the rightful leader, she was never seen again after aiding Beeleg in the execution of Frogstar.
Goosefoot was born to Skyflight and Bluestep.
Skyflight was an odd, quiet, and very shy PeakClan warrior. She was often teased by her clanmates and didn't particularly excel in hunting or fighting. Goosefoot was her second litter. None of her first litter survived past leafbare. Throughout Goosefoot's kithood, Skyflight grew more wary of the clan's, and eventually left to join a group of loners one Goosefoot became an apprentice.
Bluestep was an ambitious but not-well-liked PeakClan warrior. He was incredibly intelligent, particularly when it came to planning battles, and hunting. He was not a great fighter, though good enough to become his daughter's mentor. When Pebblestar formed his own clan, Bluestep was chosen as his deputy, and left PeakClan.
Goosefoot was born with a natural talent for fighting and hunting. She was very large, with particularly big paws and huge claws, and she caught her first vole at only 3 moons old. She was apprenticed a moon early and excelled at her training.
Goosefoot's apprenticeship was during a stressful time for PeakClan. She often felt overlooked and frequently made attempts to prove herself in the eyes of her clanmates. When Briarpaw drowned at the River, Goosefoot tried to save him, though she was unsuccessful.
Briarpaw's death, and how the RootClan cats Pinesnout and Volepaw watched him drown without helping, soured Goosefoot to RootClan.
When Bluestep left the clan, the choice was made to make Goosefoot a warrior early rather than change her mentor. Goosefoot felt unprepared for this.
Goosefoot was close friends with Sunbriar, who was the closest cat to her age. This changed when Volepaw joined PeakClan as their new medicine cat. Sunbriar was friendly with Volepaw while Goosefoot was still hostile towards her.
This is why it surprised her when, as PeakClan tried to figure out who their next leader would be, Volepaw declared Goosefoot to be chosen by StarClan. Though honored, Goosefoot was far too young and passively let Fernstar step up to the position.
Fernstar's unusual leadership style further frustrated Goosefoot. Especially as Volepaw, now Beeleg, became her number two and Fernstar's former apprentice, Sunbriar, her deputy. Goosefoot kept her head down and remained loyal to PeakClan.
For quite a few moons, Goosefoot mostly acted as a grunt for Fernstar. Fernstar didn't believe she was loyal, due to her father being the deputy of the traitorous Pebbleclan. She was assigned to guard Fernstar at night and when she visited the moon stream. Goosefoot had qualms with Fernstar's actions, but at the same time felt jealous of her friend's arbitrary promotion. She knew she was destined for more.
Goosefoot was at the moon stream with Fernstar and Beeleg when Rosestar gave IvyClan up to combine with PeakClan. Goosefoot was the cat who dragged the body of Pebblestar's mate to the gathering place during the first gathering after the clans combined.
Fernstar was able to recognize the growing resentment in Goosefoot. She played with this, making her do more and more demeaning and violent work, and often would question her loyalty in front of her clanmates. Fernstar wanted Goosefoot to be an example: kill for Fernstar and die for Fernstar, for that is what StarClan wants.
During the assault on Pebbleclan, Fernstar demanded that Goosefoot kill Bluestep. Goosefoot did. As she killed her own father, he cried out to StarClan, asking them why they'd let his own kin slaughter him. Goosefoot's choice proved her loyalty to Fernstar, and she was allowed to return to regular warrior duties after.
As Fernstar looked to take over RootClan, Beeleg wanted to put Goosefoot in a leadership position to finally fulfill StarClan's wishes. Fernstar had already created the role of "Governor" to head the former IvyClan camp, and was open to letting Goosefoot the former RootClan camp.
Unlike Rosestar, Frogstar of RootClan didn't give up her power to Fernstar. Fernstar told Goosefoot to kill Frogstar, and that when she did, she would become the Governor of the RootClan camp. Goosefoot and Beeleg traveled to meet Frogstar, where the two attacked her and drowned her 9 times.
Goosefoot couldn't handle the violence any longer. She left the clan, and found herself near the twoleg nests by the former RootClan territory.
Living here were a group of cats, decentralized, called the street cats. They lived in groups of 3-5 near twoleg nests, and bartered for food and medicine. Goosefoot, now just Goose, was disinterested in living a life intertwined with these cats, so she mostly stuck with herself.
For many moons, Goose lived a life of solitude, and in some ways hostility to the street cats. However, the lack of consistent food and medicine made leafbare very hard for her to survive through. She grew very ill.
Nearly dead, a cat named Pepper discovered Goose and nursed her back to health. Pepper lived with her three grown sons, and invited Goose to stay. Goose described the horrors of the clans and told her that she would never again become a part of a group again. To her surprise, Pepper was very familiar with the clans.
Pepper described having a kit with a clan cat. The clan cat almost left his clan to join her, but the death of the clan's leader kept him loyal to his clan. Pepper gave him the kit, named Volekit, to raise in the clans as she thought it might be a better life than her's. Pepper asked Goose if she knew a cat named Vole from RootClan... Goose decided she had to get further away from the clans.
Goose wandered eventually to the other side of the two legs nests. While sleeping underneath a dead monster, she met a kitty pet named Hotdog. Hotdog invited Goose into her nest.
Hotdog's kits had been taken from her recently, except for her son, Paul. Hotdog and Goose became close to each other, and Goose became comfortable as a kitty pet. For a few seasons, she lived with Hotdog and Paul. Hotdog and Goose loved each other deeply, though Goose never told her about the clans.
One night, as they looked over the moor, clouds overtook the stars, and like that, the stars above clan territory were gone entirely. Goose decided she needed to leave and travel further from the clans, as far as she could go.
As Goose snuck out, Hotdog caught her. Though Heartbroken, Hotdog begged her to take Paul with her. As she believed the twolegs planned to take him away, and Goose could not doubt bring him to a better life. Goose agreed.
Goose and Paul traveled far away, well past the stone lands that Pebbleclan had once lived on, and settled as barn cats. Other cats came and went from the barn, but Goose wouldn't interact much with them, as she had no interest in forming a group of any kind. With the exception of Paul, Goose wouldn't let cats stay longer than a season.
Many seasons passed, and one day Paul brought a she cat to the barn, apparently his mate, who gave birth to kits. Goose didn't pay much attention to this, until a half moon later, when a group of cats showed up to the barn. They were very mad that the she-cat was here. Goose stayed out of the way until they began to attack Paul. She jumped down planning to chase them off, and came face to face with Sunbriar.
Sunbriar was now a Pebbleclan cat, and recognized Goose. Sunbriar was shocked, as Beeleg had told the clan that Goose had drowned. Goose denied being Goosefoot and told the cats to leave.
Sunbriar told her clanmates to leave but stayed behind. She asked Paul, and his mate Swiftbreeze, to consider returning to Pebbleclan once the kits were old enough to travel. Goose once again hissed at Sunbriar to leave. Sunbriar agreed, but said she'd be back to check in on her clanmate.
Paul and Swiftbreeze questioned Goose about her origin. Goose denied it, but told Paul that the clans were no good, and that it's best to keep the kits far away from it. Swiftbreeze disagreed, saying that her clan is a great place. Pebbleclan now existed only a short distance away, under a cliff.
Goose considered leaving, now that she was found out, but she knew that Paul, who was not a strong hunter or fighter, may not survive without her. She tried to convince Paul and Swiftbreeze to return to the twoleg place and live with Hotdog, but Paul reminded her that Hotdog had wanted this life for him.
Eventually Sunbriar returned again, late at night. Goose was initially hostile but eventually admitted that she once was Goosefoot. Goose revealed her choice to leave the clans, and Sunbriar caught her up on her life.
Sunbriar had left PeakClan seasons ago. The other two clans ceased to exist, and Fernstar ruled all the territory. Sunbriar had lived a life under Fernstar, and eventually she formed a rebellion, dedicated to toppling Fernstar's regime. For many moons she organized cats from across the territory, until Fernstar killed one of the rebels as an example, and proclaimed that she had been told who the rebels were. Sure enough, many rebelling cats were killed over the next moon. Sunbriar had just given birth to a kit, and realized that she had to leave PeakClan.
Sunbriar and her closest friend, Beeleg, had fled the territory. But Sunbriar's former mate, Flamefang stopped them and attacked Beeleg, claiming that she was the one who told Fernstar of the rebels. Beeleg and Sunbriar managed to escape, but Beeleg ultimately decided not to leave PeakClan, as she didn't want to leave it without a medicine cat. Sunbriar and her son made a life in Pebbleclan.
Sunbriar had recently become deputy, and admitted to Goose that Pebblestar was on his last life, and barely leading due to a mix of old age and the effects of his clan being attacked.
Sunbriar brought Goose to the moon stone at the new territory. Pebblestar was waiting for them, as was Sunbriar's son, Volejump. Goose is disturbed that Sunbriar would name her kit after such a cat. Pebblestar and Goose try to convince her to join the clan. Goose denies and leaves.
Sunbriar follows Goose and personally asks her to join, or at least to stay at the barn, and asks her why she was so willing to throw away her history for a new life. Goose retorts that her history is worth throwing away.
Sunbriar tells her that if she joins Pebbleclan, she will make her the deputy. Goose denies to make a decision.
It's late as Goose leaves, so she decides to camp out in some bushes. There she dreams of father, Bluestep. Bluestep refuses to forgive her, but reminds her that she must be a leader. Goose questions why StarClan never intervened, and Bluestep tells her that just because she is meant to be a leader, doesn't mean she's meant to be the leader of Pebbleclan, but that maybe she is. Goose is displeased with the lack of a solid answer, she wakes angry and confused.
She stalks back to the moon stone, where Pebblestar, Volejump, and Sunbriar are sleeping. She considers killing Pebblestar, but realizes that he is already dead.
She returns home, where Paul tells her that he and Skyflight have decided to stay there. Goose decides that from then on, they will be a group of their own, away from StarClan and the clans, just together as cats.
Many seasons later, as Goose is an elder, she is visited by a cat, Vastfeather, who claims that a omen foretold that a cat of her group will someday reunite the clans, but that caution must be used to prevent it from going bad again. Goose wonders what that means, as she finally passes, surrounded by the other barn cats.

Considering i havent posted on my main crafts account but i have a lot to say i will do a mini post with a few things ive done recently:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most recently (like, today) corn starch/glycerine/vinegar bioplastics (+yellow onion skin dye for the orange, not yet set fully) Should be good to take out of the plates in like 8 or so days
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WIP drying pumpkin out to hopefully make a patterned container, found a pumpkin someone had thrown on the sode of the road and carved a design into it/emptied it out
i'm *hoping* packing it with salt will let it drain of enough water like the last pumpkin i made this way. I think i might not have thinned the walls enough and it'll take a while to dry before i can test this guess
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spun yarn (raw wool washed using saponins extracted from lambsquarters/goosefoot seed coatings)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SPIDER SILK plus beginnings of a very tiny weaving attempt again with them; i think it's too tiny for the warp though
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A small sampling of plant pigments (usually anthocyanins) i've tried working with recently (mostly mixed with water, some egg tempura experimenting as well)
Hoping that posting this will kickstart my brain to post more about these specific things with even more detailed observations soon
(particularly the anthocyanins)
