“Did I Stutter?” {023} (THE END OF COMPILATION 2/4)

Tumblr media
“(…) Have you ever had a dream that... That you um you had, you’ll t- You would, you could, you do, You wid, you want, you, you could do some, you... You’ll do, you could you, you want, You want him to do you so much You could do anything? (…)”
THE END OF COMPILATION - GENERAL THOUGHTS:
Started on 2018.03.16, finished on 2021.02.12; total of the songs used - 92. Created as the third in order (from four bigger compilations). Given the rule of spotting the “stuttering” mostly at the beginning of the sentences this series was slowly, but consistently growing over time. The most problematic thing during creating this type of posts was recognizing the stuttering in the first place and then drawing the line of what was actually repeated - the word or the syllable. I feel that that the starting and the ending songs perfectly tie the theme :)
The two other compilations are still running - you can find them through the tags or the Masterlist.
See you next time! :)

Bedtime Classics
Hello my friends! This week, I was feeling nostalgic for some old bedtime stories and I thought I’d switch it up a bit. The mission of this blog is to compare my favorite books to their movie counterparts. And these bedtime stories happen to be some of my favorite books, especially when I was growing up. Today, I am going to see how well “Goodnight Moon and other Sleepytime Tales” interpreted and animated“Goodnight Moon” “There’s a Nightmare in my Closet” and “Tar Beach”. So, without further ado, let’s spill the Reel Tea.
GOODNIGHT MOON
Tumblr media
“Goodnight Moon” written by Margaret Wise Brown is probably one of the most famous, short bedtime stories of all time. Luckily, this story was the first book to appear in the HBO special.
Admirable Change
I really enjoyed the amazing narration by Susan Sarandon. Not only was the narration relaxing, but so was the soothing music in the background. I think it was a nice way to compliment the relaxing bedtime story with some relaxing lullaby music. I will admit, watching it now, I felt sleepy!
Not so Admirable Change
Even though there were close to no changes from book to video, there is not doubt that the one thing that was changed was not necessarily a part in the reading, but the sound. In the story, the only sound that is mentioned is the “hush” from the old lady. I think the fact that she was the only sound was the point of the book. When she hushes, there is no sound. In the animation, there are sounds of yawning, meowing, squeaking, and the sound of lights, yet those continue after the fact that the old lady said hush.
TAR BEACH
Tumblr media
In my opinion, this book, written by Faith Ringgold, is one of the most underrated bedtime stories. When I used to read and watch the book, I didn’t really appreciate the deep message that this story has.
Admirable Change
In the book, it is mentioned several times that the story takes place in the 1930s. However, in the animation, it is not mentioned when the story took place. I think this was a good choice considering this is supposed to be a timeless dream that anyone can relate to. By not confirming the time frame, the goal of an ageless experience is accomplished.
Not so Admirable Change
Despite the animation including most of the same details in the book, there were several things that were left out. These things included the financial hardships the family had to endure and how the color of their skin played apart in that. I think that it is important to include these details, because it explains why the tar beach is so important to the little girl. I understand that there might be some talk about making it kid friendly, but I don’t think that was an issue. These details should have been included, but they sadly weren’t.
THERE’S A NIGHTMARE IN MY CLOSET
Tumblr media
“There’s a Nightmare in my Closet” is one of the many hits by Mercer Mayer. In this story it captures the fear that most children have about a mysterious creature that lives inside their closet, but then tries to show that they are not only real, but friendly.
Admirable Change
The one thing that I really liked was the fact that it was a word for word remake of the book. Despite its word for word rendition, it still had it’s differences. It had the monster’s noises. Even though these noises were not the most pleasant thing to hear, it was still pretty accurate to how it was described in the book.
Not so Admirable Change
Even though these noises were on point, I do think they dragged on a little too long, to the point where it was kind of annoying. For example, after the young boy shoots the monster with his toy gun, the monster begins to cry, however, because the wailing sound went on for a long time, it went from a relaxing bedtime story, to unpleasant real quick.
Overall Thoughts
I think most of us have read or seen these animated recreations of these stories at one point or another. They are ingrained into our culture, and there is no sign of these stories going away anytime soon. I think the animations were a pleasant way of showing children these stories, in a new and even more visual way. I do think there were some things that shouldn’t have been excluded from the books, but the overall watching experience was a nostalgic one that I would recommend to those who have read the timeless classics.

HBO Max Announces The Runaway Bunny
Tumblr media
HBO Max has unveiled an adaptation of children’s book The Runaway Bunny:
On March 25, HBO Max will premiere the new animated special THE RUNAWAY BUNNY, based on the children’s book by Margaret Wise Brown. Producer and director Amy Schatz captures the gentle magic of this classic with the use of traditional hand-drawn animation, narration and performance of an original Margaret Wise Brown lullaby by Tracee Ellis Ross and songs by Grammy® winning artists Mariah Carey, Kelly Rowland, Rosanne Cash, Ziggy Marley and Kimya Dawson, as well as Grammy® nominees Rufus Wainwright and Michael Kiwanuka.
Originally published in 1942 by HarperCollins Publishers, the book has sold over 12 million copies and continues to enchant generations of children. THE RUNAWAY BUNNY brings the illustrations of Clement Hurd and the poetry of Margaret Wise Brown to animated life for the first time. Featuring a restless little bunny who dreams of leaving home, the film is an exploration of love and childhood. Woven throughout the story are songs that accompany the bunny on his imaginary, magical adventures into the world and back home to the comfort of his mother’s love.
“THE RUNAWAY BUNNY is a timeless classic about youthful independence and the strength of a mother’s love,” said Billy Wee, SVP, Original Animation, HBO Max. “Amy Schatz has lovingly brought this story to vivid life with an incredible group of collaborators.”
THE RUNAWAY BUNNY features the following songs:
Mariah Carey’s brand-new reinterpretation of her #1 hit song “Always Be My Baby”
Kelly Rowland – Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love”
Rosanne Cash – “You Are My Sunshine”
Ziggy Marley – “What a Wonderful World”
Rufus Wainwright – Billy Joel’s “Lullabye, Goodnight My Angel”
Kimya Dawson – “You Are My Baby”
Michael Kiwanuka – “Home Again”
Tracee Ellis Ross performs “Song of the Runaway Bunny,” the never-before-released song written by Margaret Wise Brown based on a Provençal love ballad which inspired Brown to write this book.
THE RUNAWAY BUNNY is produced and directed by Amy Schatz, whose work includes “Goodnight Moon & Other Sleepytime Tales” and the “Classical Baby” series, currently available on HBO MAX. Schatz’s productions have earned multiple Emmy, Directors Guild of America, Peabody and Parents’ Choice Awards, including a 2020 Emmy win for outstanding children’s program for “We Are the Dream.”
