Corey and Oats in…
The Spooktacular Trip To Spirit Halloween.
-------------------------------------------
Corey Covid’s first halloween in New Zealand had been very successful and he was looking forward to having another one this year and he couldn’t wait to get his inner monster on and he asked Oats if the two of them could go on a spooky adventure. ‘Can you, me and Mel go on a spooky adventure together?’ ‘Sure…where do you want to go?’ ‘I know of a special halloweeny place to go where we can have all sorts of fun.’ Oats showed him a page of a website for a store called Spirit Halloween, and that immediately gave Corey an idea. ‘Oooh, let’s go there.’
“How are we going to do it though?”
“Leave that to me…”
Oats ran over to the bedroom and picked up the bedbox and pulled out what appeared to be a magical item which was a key which unlocked a hidden door which got them to the entrance of the store known as Spirit. The duo raced over to the entrance as they saw the reaper, the doors opened as if by supernatural magic and they walked inside it. Corey grabbed a basket and started to look around, Oats galloped over to the costume section and went to try on some of the costumes. He put on a Princess Peach costume and he turned into a half-equine version of her, but he was still himself, he put on an Emily (Corpse Bride) wedding gown and turned into a ghostly bride pony-girl version of himself that had a similar gown to Emily’s, he enjoyed putting on all of the feminine costumes and exploring his feminine side so this was natural for him.
He walked over to the masks and saw all the different horror character masks, and also stood near the spot that was used to activate one of the animatronics, the animatronic he was standing next to was Lord Raven…Lord Raven yawned as he awakened, looking impossible and frightening with his claw-like fingers, his glowing eyes and his bird-like face. Corey was impressed and took on a half bird-like form and sat on Lord Raven’s shoulder. Oats galloped over to Monty and Monty played a song for him with his cymbals as the equine twirled around, imitating a ghostly ballerina.
The two of them looked at the Beetlejuice memorabilia…’Do you ever noticed that it’s almost always Betelgeuse and Lydia that get all the merch? But hey, look there’s Adam and Barbara, and also the hunter with the shrunken head, and the sandworm.’ ‘I wish they would make some of Otho. Otho’s my second favorite character.’ ‘I like the Adam and Barbara plushes though, those are adorable.’ ‘Oatsie, how about we check the Nightmare Before Christmas stuff?’ ‘Yeah, that sounds fun.’
Oats looked through the Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise and he saw some Jack, Sally, Oogie Boogie and Zero shirts and toys but he did manage to find some Mayor hats and costumes and Mayor plushes. ‘Yaaay, I KNEW Glenn Shadix wasn’t going to be missed out on representation-wise.’ Corey squeezed an Oogie Boogie plush and the plush performed the Oogie Boogie song.
“Let’s get some Beetlejuice stuff for our friend.”
“Yeah, and some Nightmare Before Christmas things too.”
Corey nodded as he went through the laboratory walkthrough and he saw Nozzles the clown and Barry. He enjoyed going through and watching the displays, and upon emerging from the laboratory walkthrough he watched the tubes with the bubbles and also saw the Bog Zombie while Oats was playing with Betty Sharpe. Mel was having a go at pretending to be a scarecrow and standing next to Strawman and Possessed Pumpkin.
Mel also took on the form of a voodoo queen that was half living voodoo-doll as she performed the song Funky Nassau with Grim the skeleton and a group of singing ghosts, she also picked up some Haunted Mansion things and bought them along with some blind-bags. Oats got all excited about the Hocus Pocus section and looked at the costumes, he saw a Sanderson Sisters funko pop set. ‘Oooh, Sarah. She’s my favorite Sanderson sister.’ ‘Do you think that the actress who plays Sarah really does look like me?’ ‘Well Sarah Sanderson IS pretty but you’re pretty too, in your own way.’ ‘
The duo saw the bobbleheads of Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger and mimicked the head-bobbing movement in a style that was also referencing the infamous Butabi brothers from Saturday Night Live. Oats looked over at Mr Punchy and gave that animatronic a go, he chuckled as he saw Lucky Bottoms laughing away. ‘These guys are pretty fun.’ Next, they went over to Regan…’I loved you in The Exorcist, you were very scary.’
“Yeah, that voice and everything.”
Oats looked over at Lil Skellibones and played with him while Corey pretended to have a boxing match with Shorty from Killer Klowns From Outer Space. The duo had all sorts of fun in the store, playing around with the cast of characters, a couple of hours later Mel called them over and the duo paid for the things they picked out. ‘Here Corey, I got you and Alcina an Adam and Barbara plushie.’ ‘Aaaaw, thank you.’
Corey looked over at the zombie babies including the ‘burrito babies’ and frollicked around in the laboratory area once more, observing the ‘bubbles of death’ and pretending to be electrocuted, he definitely thought of this place as being so much fun he didn’t want to leave, but luckily he knew he could come back anytime. After he went back to Mel, the duo left the store with her and headed outside.
A black and orange pumpkin car was right for them outside, they hopped in the pumpkin car and went on a bit of an exploration as they visited graveyards and learned about ghosts and different takes on them in lore and pop culture, and after that they arrived back home at their house in Nile Road.
The duo got out of the car with Mel as they looked around before going into their house, Corey couldn’t believe all the fun he had at Spirit. ‘Do you think we’ll have more fun and that we’ll be able to go again?’ ‘Oh I just know it, that store is always there through August, September and all the way until November.’ ‘Yaaaaaay!’
Corey hugged Mel as he set up his special spooky display, later that evening the microbes all told scary stories and listened to funky halloween songs as they got ready for the upcoming halloween festivities to come, and they remembered to ask Mel if they could go to Spirit again, to which she said yes. ‘This halloween will be microbial.’ ‘It certainly will be.’ The duo laughed as they hugged each-other.
And when it was time for bed they snuggled up and dreamed of their adventure in Spirit and dreamed of their new friends like Regan, Lord Raven, Possessed Pumpkin and Lil Skellibones and they dreamed of having a monster party and being monsters with Corey as a vampirus (vampire virus) and Oats as a ghostly bride pony.
The fun isn’t over there though, for stay tuned for ‘Oats and the Unicorn Princess’ the ‘2022 Halloween Spooktacular’ ‘Oats’s Magical Flower Garden’ and quite a few other stories.

10/10 tag game
This is late but I was tagged by @maggie-wolff-writes! I’m not tagging everyone, but I like filling these out!
1. What’s an obscure fact about your wip?
A: Outcast Grove is based on a story I used to play with my Schleich husky/wolf figurines when I was like 10-12 years old and just getting into collecting these. I always played roughly the same storyline, which has since been majorly overhauled and reworked into the plot of Outcast Grove today!
2. What is the most ridiculous outfit your character would wear?
A: Since these are natural dogs abandoned by humans and wolves they usually don’t wear anything. The dogs may wear funky collars, though! Wolves usually only wear a radio collar or ear tag, if any at all.
3. What TV show would your character binge-watch?
A: Jackdaw: Probably something dark and fantastical. He’d like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, The Witcher, Game of Thrones.
Dutchy: Something more light-hearted with girl power. Probably Once Upon a Time or something.
Nimble: He’d watch honestly anything as long as he has a good time watching it. He doesn’t really have any boundaries for things he can and cannot handle, he just kinda does whatever. He probably likes animated shows, though.
4. If your character had to eat one food for a week, what would it be?
A: They’re wolves, again. But Jackdaw would probably like a luxurious meal of reindeer meat, since he can eat the entire reindeer and have the different types of meat all to himself.
5. Character’s happiest moment?
A: Jackdaw doesn’t exactly have many what one could call “happy moments”, but he does really enjoy spending time with Dutchy back when he was in the Dog Lands. Honestly, these were about the only moments he had where his childhood/puphood was somewhat normal.
6. What’s your favorite book series?
A: My personal favorite book series currently is The Wolf Chronicles by Dorothy Heart! It’s been a major inspiration behind many of my stories (Outcast Grove included!). It’s basically a trilogy about the first bond between prehistoric people and wolves happening from the wolf’s perspective. Good shit.
7. Your happiest memories?
A: Bungeejumping in Canada, meeting my internet friends irl, many games I used to play in my childhood, getting to meet a real wolf face to face, doing taxidermy for the first time, learning to accept myself.
8. What inspired your wip?
A: Like I said before, the games I used to play with these wolf/husky figurines when I was little. These were in turn often inspired by the second Balto movie, the Wolfquest game and whatever loose “knowledge” I had about wolves at the time (the original version of OG had the alpha wolf theory and shit).
9. Any other hobbies outside writing?
A: Reading, watching series & movies, writing reviews, collecting stuff (usually wolf stuff, Ginga stuff, figurines, books or Funko Pops), doing taxidermy, drawing, worldbuilding.
10. Do you have an inside joke regarding your wip?
A: For Outcast Grove I like thinking of how ridiculous some of the names (for the wolves) can be. At first I wanted all wolves to have a similar naming system with them having natural nouns as names only (Storm, Frost, Stone, etc.) but it just didn’t stick. Right now the wolves have names that are all over the place with no real consistency. There’s wolves with actual noun names, but there’s also those called Dan, Frida and Chelsea for no apparent reason. Dogs have names that are all over the place, too, but it makes a lot more sense for them since they’re 90% abandoned human pets.
I don’t tag anyone but if you have a writing project/WIP/whatever you want to do this with just go right ahead!

Neko-Sufi crying a lot after Rama's death cuz plane crashed. She thought it's not real, but sadly yes, it's real. She starts to cry for her loss. Until she meets someone that said she or he can make her happy. She or he gives her the happy pills as Neko takes and eating it, she starts to feel happy. Whenever she saw everyone sad, her imagination show her that they're happy, so yeah, she's starting to laugh, smile and anything.

A bunch of Terry headcanons I got:
He loves vocaloid, jpop, pop in general mostly by girls, everything catchy or funky or upbeat, definitely edm and eurobeat, in general he often blasts his music at full volume and Korvo hates it
He has a bunch of itabags, but none of them have specific themes, they're just full of his likes, in general
He doesn't like to be touched when he's grumpy or sick, might hissss at you
He has a funko collection unfortunately
He's either an orphan or had a bad dad
He at one point meets a human that has the same name as him and takes it very personally, not in a good way ("CHANGE YOUR NAME BITCH!!! THIS ONE'S MINE!! MINE YOU HEAR ME??")
He has a yelp account where he reviews how good the fucking was. never the food
is a natural flirter, but will get heavily flustered if flirted to
He doesn't like spicy food
He cried the first time he watched The Little Mermaid because it hit too close to home
Gets cranky when the sky is grey, for plant-anatomy related reasons
Before enlisting to become a pupa specialist, he worked the shlorpian equivalent of Mcdonalds, even sold the shlorpian equivalent of street hotdogs at one point, basically did all them jobs where they underpay you and the customers hate you for existing </3 but always got fired after a while
Terry's favorite color is blue
He's very knowledgeable about random earth trivia because he has a habit of looking everything up on wikipedia when he comes across something he doesn't know while consuming fiction, like for example he'll play animal crossing and google all the species of fishes and bugs to check if they're actually real
He's ticklish
He doesn't know how to read analog clocks (no one in the family does)
He does not understand the concept that memes can expire, he's just vibing and engaging with terribly outdated ones but he's having fun so it's okay
Loves everything cute
Has Too Much Gene™
Watches epic fail compilations on youtube, and vines/tiktok ones as well
unlike Korvo, he's very fascinated by the fact that earth has so many different languages. he likes learning about them (like how he does "word of the day" in 208), definitely has duolingo installed in his phone and hasn't missed a single day. may or may not already be able to communicate in languages that aren't english
loves The Arts™ and has many hobbies related to it, since it’s the epitome of self-expression which is something he was never allowed, and it feels really therapeutic and fun. he doesn't do it in front of other people or show anyone because he's too insecure to be vulnerable like that
big Aries/Cancer vibes (Korvo is virgo/aquarius, Jesse is libra/taurus, Yumyulack is gemini/scorpio). but in my heart he's a Taurus
aside from funny ironic t-shirts, he has a tendency to collect things in general, anything he finds interesting or worth keeping. funny shaped rocks and seashells, funny mugs, anything that holds sentimental value or is fun really
whenever he watches something he goes to check the discussion around it online and whenever he finds out people actually hate thing he loved (or vice versa) he gets really pissed
Funbucket was no fluke, he loves kiddy media and everything that would be deemed "childish" by people who hate fun

Funko Pops! Vinyl figurines are collectible figurines based on your favorite characters from blockbuster movies, cult classic television shows and even video games. Each one is made from top-quality PVC (Shortened to vinyl) and painted with an extremely high degree of detail. Each figure is individually limited to an edition of just 100 pieces. This means that you, the collector, are getting something unique- maybe even a one-of-a-kind- each figure in your collection.
Why are these so popular with collectors? Since these vinyl figurines are so fun! Young and old, everyone can appreciate a excellent Pop! Tumblr media
How did this happen? In January of 2021, Funko brought back the infamous Freddy kubrowski- but this time, the"kool-aid" was replaced with a bottle of Tri-Head beer. Yes, because of the genius of Freddy kubrowski, we now have a Freddy kubrow who is a literal pop culture icon and the face of all that is FUNK! Tumblr media
These funky-style funk-pop statues are made of vinyl, and are individually hand sculpted by the world's biggest pop artist, Freddy Kopp. These figurines are made to have a soft glow in the dark glow which appears when the lights are turned on and off. The glow acts as a medium in order to add depth to the picture and make the perfect illusion of 3-D pop! Many of these personalities come with their own special effects and sometimes, you could even get a chance to flex your imagination and create your own custom sounds and music for all these vinyl figurines! This is because most of them come with all sorts of different"sound chips" that can be used to record your personal voice and record songs for these characters!
Funko Pop products lines include: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Barbie and Ken, The Flintstones, Batman, Spiderman, Indiana Jones, The Powerpuff Girls, The Incredibles, Spongebob Squarepants, Justice League, Shrek, Cars, Toy Story, The Beatles, The Wizard of Oz, Spongebob Squarepants, The Betty Boop Movie, T.V. and more! Neko-Sufi: Thank you so much for coming to my daughter's birthday! 😊
This is where everyone, especially Rama, staff, special friends, family and Usagi's babe friends came over to celebrate Melly's birthday
Angst! Girl Funky Funko AU
Tumblr media
Girl Funko: No.. No!! Bestie, don't die!! STAY WITH ME!!! AND PLEASE DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES!!! 😢
This au from Angel! Usagi-Haji. And it's about Usagi driving his car till there's one car fail to brake as it loses the control, making him have a car accident. Girl Funko saw him get out from the car, saw him bleeding a lot. Causing her panic, she rushes to him then hold his hand, tears up, telling him to not to close his eyes, Usagi feels pain on his whole body, especially his brain. He can see her, but because he got injured, making his eyes too heavy to open his eyes, he's starting to pass out. Girl Funko hugging him cause she doesn't want to loose her bestie. Her brother starts to call the ambulance.
At hospital, they're waiting him, especially Neko-Sufian who's tearing up cuz he loses another he loves. And the doctors came out with sad face. Both Neko and Girl Funko ask them if there's something bad happen to him and tell them to not to say this is his last time to live. Unfortunately, doctor said "Sorry. We already tried our best... But... This is his last time to live. I gues... It's time to say goodbye to him.... You guys can come and see him" They rush in and saw Usagi lays on bed, his body is bandaged, even his eyes, making his bestie and brother tearing a lot as they rush to him and hug him tightly. Both of them don't want to loose him, everyone don't want to loose him too. Until, Usagi-Haji speak with eye closed, both of them feel relief, then, Usagi said something. He said "Bestie... I want to say... You're my bestie friendzy I ever had in my life... And brother... You're the most lovely brother I ever had... And... *To Yana's brothers, sister, staff, parents, dude friends and staff* Boys... And girls... Mr and Mrs. Loud... Sister... Erick... Gris.... Dini... File.. Glor dude and... Sid dude... *Panting*" Everyone heard him call them as they tearing up"Yes, Usagi/Haji/Haji dude? 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😟😟😢😢😢😢😢". Then, Usagi telling them "Thank you.... So much for... Spending time... With me... I know... My time is... Come... And..." Girl Funko and Neko can't stand it as she tells him "Please don't say such a thing, bestie/bro! *Sobbing* I-I don't want to loose you!" Hugging him. Usagi-Haji said "Sorry.... Hey, bestie... Can I tell you two something...?" She asks "W-what is it, my bestie/brother? 😢😢" Usagi smiles as he said "P... Promise me.. To not to do any suicide.... Take care of yourself.... And... Stay happy... And... I... *Pants* Love you....". Suddenly, the heart monitor beeping very long, meaning he's dead, both Neko and Girl Funko shaking him, but he doesn't awake. And... They start to cry if their loss. Shouting"BESTIE/BROTHER!!!! 😭😭" Everyone in that room crying, sobbing, tearing up and staying silent while crying quietly.

Me(irl): SHUT UP!!! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ME AT ALL!!!
As you can see, this about 1 years ago. Before I move to my new house, some of neighbor or friends asked me about my father who died. And there's one girl ask me about him. Ask me where is he, I refuse, but she asking me again. I told her that's none of her business. But, she really wants to know. And I told her he's not in this world anymore. She asks me why, that's making me headache to answer it, then I answer that family issues only. She keeps asking me again. And in the end, I stay at home for a days, depressed, hurted, sad and angry to her who asking me that question. In my mind, I mad at her for questioning that while tearing up....

Enter’s Massive Online Garage Sale, Part 2: Electric Boogaloo (now with director commentary!)
Selling off a bunch of stuff. Collectibles, subscription-box exclusive HP merch, and just random stuff. Prices don’t include shipping, but I’ll do my best to keep shipping prices down. PM me for anything you’re interested in and don’t forget everything comes with free art!
Please reblog, I need this stuff gone and I need the money badly to help pay for my surgery bills, especially being out of work at the moment.
Everything will be washed/Lysol’ed very thoroughly before shipping!
Anything mentioned without photos, just ask me about them. Tumblr will only allow a certain amount of photos at a time so I’m saving those for the things that need photos.
1. Harry Potter coloured pencils: These are from a subscription box. With delightfully eye-rollingly color-themed puns such as “Greengotts” and “Plumbledore”, these will are great for colouring or just displaying so your guests can roll their eyes, too. Never opened. Set of 12. $5
2. Harry Potter Funko POP Pez dispenser: Ever wanted to eat the sweet nectar of mass produced confection out of the torn open throat of chibi Harry Potter? Now you can! The most hardcore candy dispenser around, if you choose to think hardcore! $5
3. Marauder’s Map Infinity Calendar: Subcription box exclusive. Fuel your existential crisis with the power of rotating wheels and nerdy papercraft! I wrote a little about this particular item on my collection blog. Check it out there for more info and then come back here and give me money so you too can experience the monotony and dread of watching your life pass by before your eyes. $5
Tumblr media
4. Death Note L plushie: He’s been sitting in a box for two years, craving cake and companionship. Give him one of these things (not the cake, you’ll have to wash him and you’ll have wasted perfectly good cake trying to feed it to a plushie) today. $5
Tumblr media
5. Angel Beats! Weiss Schwarz cards (set of 8): Does anyone actually play this game or do we just collect the weeaboo cards? This is one booster pack because I got my blood taken in middle school and it hurt so mom bought me these and then I never got more. But you don’t care about that, you care about the cute anime girls (and TK)! Also one of them is all shiny and shit. $5
Tumblr media
6. Flying keys Hoo-rag: Subscription box exclusive. It’s an athletic bandana, which explains why I never opened it. The athletic part, not the bandana part, bandanas are badass. Bananas, which I keep accidentally typing, are also badass. Get that potassium, playboy! Also get yourself a flying key Hoo-rag, so you can keep the sweat, blood, and tears out of your eyes while you exercise! $10
Tumblr media
7. Venom enamel pins (set of 3): Hot Topic sent me a double order on a Secret Santa gift and then wouldn’t do a return, so now I’m stuck with these pins of a character with whom the only experience I have is accidentally stumbling across vore on dA two years ago. Help me erase the mental scars of my past and get yourself some pins! $8
Tumblr media
8. Body-Chan Deluxe (tan): Have you ever wanted an anatomical model for drawing that perfectly replicates the cutesy-ridiculous proportions of your favorite waifu? Sure you have. Even if you haven’t, you will when I tell you that she comes with lots of cool accessories, several different hands, and a stand! Yes, a stand! Bet your fancy digital model doesn’t have one of those! She’s been out of the box a few times but she’s got all her pieces and is in perfect condition. $25
Tumblr media
9. Body-kun Deluxe (grey):  What’s that? You don't want to give me money for Body-Chan because you don’t have a waifu? That’s okay, I’ve got a featureless husbando, too! This dude comes with a bunch of stuff, I’m not sure what all exactly because I’ve never used him, but judging from that fancy Ziploc bag, it’s a doozy! He was given to me by the fine folks at work and before that he belonged to a stranger, so the plastic parts of his packaging are gone but all his parts are there as far as I know. And here’s the kicker: I’m offering him as part of a $30 lot with these two little peeps! They’ve never been opened and I don’t read whatever language that is, so I’m not sure who made them, but they’ve got extra heads with additional hairstyles, and tennis shoes! Tennis shoes, folks! You can take anything from this photo for $15 or all three of them for $30. If you can do math, which I can’t, you’ll see that's a savings of...something! Like I said, I can’t do math.
Tumblr media
10. Assorted enamel pins: Lunala, Kyogre, or some funky hands. I’d really love to trade these for Harry Potter enamel pins if anyone wants to make me some trade offers. Or you can just offer me $3 each and I’ll take it because I’m broke.
Tumblr media

10/10 tag game
This is late but I was tagged by @maggie-wolff-writes! I’m not tagging everyone, but I like filling these out!
1. What’s an obscure fact about your wip?
A: Outcast Grove is based on a game I used to play with my Schleich husky/wolf figurines when I was like 10-12 years old and just getting into collecting these.

After Culinary and Literary Acclaim, She’s Moving to the Woods
NAHMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — It was only Saturday morning, and already the problems were piling up for Iliana Regan here in the rainy woods of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Ms. Regan is a 40-year-old chef from Indiana with a Michelin star who last summer published “Burn the Place,” perhaps the definitive Midwest drunken-lesbian food memoir. On its cover, the chef David Chang calls her one of the best chefs he has ever known.
Ms. Regan and her wife, Anna Hamlin, who is 10 years her junior, have staked their future on these woods, where sight unseen they bought a late-1990s, four-bedroom cabin with pine log walls on 150 acres at the edge of the Hiawatha National Forest. They fixed it up and named it the Milkweed Inn. Last summer, they hosted their first guests.
The dream is that every weekend from May to October, 10 people will each pay $750 to nearly $1,000 to relax in the woods and immerse themselves in what some chefs and writers have started calling “new gatherer” or “deep nature” cooking.
If the chef René Redzepi (also a Regan fan) is the Nordic godfather of a culinary movement that cultivates a deep connection to the surrounding landscape, Ms. Regan is its Greta Thunberg, steering her tiny boat steadily into uncharted waters and attempting a new definition of what it means to be an American chef.
“She’s an example of American pragmatism,” said Mr. Chang, who invited Ms. Regan to cook with him last year at an event in Austin, Texas, and later interviewed her on his podcast. “It’s almost a liberal-arts approach to how she cooks.”
Her plan is counterintuitive: Make the remote inn successful enough so she and Ms. Hamlin can jump off the fame Ferris wheel near its apex and close Elizabeth, the Chicago restaurant on which Ms. Regan built her name.
The restaurant has won a Michelin star six years in a row. Jeff Gordinier, the food and drinks editor for Esquire magazine and a former reporter for The New York Times, called it “a funky, foraged, magic-realist vision of the Midwest” when he included it on his recent list of the last decade’s 40 most important restaurants.
Closing it would be a relief, the women said. No more wondering if they can make payroll or whether the dishwasher will show. No more pressure to scale a concept or seduce an investor or battle the haters on social-media platforms like Yelp, which Ms. Regan described in her memoir as a 10-ton penis relentlessly “boinking you on the head.”
She just wants to write, raise a family and fill her pantry with the wonders of the woods.
“Cooking is something I want to be doing until the end of time,” she said. “But I definitely don’t want to be 55 years old and running Elizabeth.”
On this weekend, with winter bearing down and a compound to secure until the first guests would return in May, it was hard to see how that was going to work.
On Friday night, after the staff at Elizabeth had served the last fresh doughnut dusted with blueberry powder, which capped her 14-dish fall tasting menu, the couple wrangled their three dogs into an S.U.V. and drove six-and-a-half hours to get here.
Around 2 a.m., they got lost on the network of profoundly muddy, one-lane logging roads that lead to the cabin. The next morning, Ms. Regan had to drive back out 25 miles to pick up a reporter and photographer at a minimart near the edge of Lake Michigan because the rain hadn’t stopped and the roads were too rutted for a city car to navigate.
Ms. Regan doesn’t so much arrive as she just appears, quiet as a deer. She looks younger than she is, in round eyeglasses and a yellow Minnesota Vikings watch cap she bought not because she is a fan but because she liked the looks of the Viking.
It’s hard to square the woman who quietly suggests a fried chicken thigh from the gas station as a road snack with the person who, before she got sober 10 years ago, ran away from the police in handcuffs, had sex in bar bathrooms and used her car key to administer bumps of cocaine.
“Because Iliana speaks with this high, gentle, childlike voice, I think some people underestimate her,” Mr. Gordinier wrote in an email. “She’s not an innocent kid lost in the woods. She’s actually the wolf. She’s fierce and independent and hungry.”
After a quick stop to pick apples from what seemed like the only tree in the forest that still held any fruit, we made it to the cabin. Almost immediately and despite the clear warning they give every guest not to pet him, Bear, her beloved Shih Tzu, bit me hard enough on the finger to draw blood.
There were other, bigger problems. Mice had discovered a bag of marshmallows left over from a summer s’mores kit. An enterprising rodent had dragged one into the banneton basket Ms. Regan uses to proof her sourdough bread, and hosted a mouse party.
A Knack for Foraging
Bread plays an outsize role in her life. She makes it from a starter she has been tending like a pet for 15 years. It took her a year to learn how to turn wild yeast and winter wheat flour into a perfect loaf with a hard crust and a custardy heart. She serves it as a separate course at Elizabeth, alongside cultured butter that has been molded into the shape of an owl.
The bread also sustains guests throughout their weekends at the inn, which starts with pierogi and smoked lake trout on Friday and peaks on Saturday with a 15-course dinner that might include wild blueberries in juiced wood sorrel, young milkweed pods fried until the insides turn as silky as cheese, and moose tartare.
“Making a good loaf of bread can entirely change my mood,” she wrote in her memoir. Executed correctly, the day is good no matter what else happens. Screw it up, and she feels sad and worthless.
The mice had ruined the proofing basket, so she improvised with a colander and a dish towel. Temperature and timing were not on her side. When she baked her loaf outdoors in a cast-iron Dutch oven tucked inside a ceramic grill, it emerged misshapen with large holes.
Redemption came in a steamy cup of tea brewed from three kinds of mushrooms, including some black trumpets like the ones she hoped we might find down by the river once the rain stopped. She has been making the dark broth ever since she ran an underground restaurant out of her Chicago apartment a decade ago.
“It’s her ‘Free Bird,’” Ms. Hamlin said.
One sip, and you think maybe they can actually pull this off.
Ms. Regan grew up with three older sisters on a 10-acre farm near Merrillville, Ind. Her bedroom had plywood floors, and the basement always flooded. The barn was crammed with used restaurant equipment, coffee cans filled with old parts and an abandoned light-blue Chevy, where she used to sit and fantasize she was on a date with a pretty girl. An outsider observing her young life, she wrote, might have bet she’d grow up to be an alcoholic transgender trucker carny.
Her mother liked to read Gourmet magazine and make her own pasta. Her father, a steelworker who never met a vegetable he didn’t want to grow, saw early on that she had a knack for finding the last ripe dewberry on a bush.
In an arresting passage in her book, she describes the day he taught her to hunt for chanterelles. She was about 5, and so focused on the task that she lost track of him. A drunk uncle who she recalls was always telling her what a pretty little girl she was, picked her up from behind and carried her into a dilapidated cabin. A family friend was inside, saving her, perhaps, from something terrible. He took her back to her father. As they headed to the car with their bags of mushrooms, a tornado spun through the sand and swept the family to the ground. When they finally made it home, her father placed her on a stool next to the stove and taught her how to carefully cook the chanterelles with red wine and butter.
“This was the day I slighted fate and became a chef,” she wrote.
By 15, she was already a hard worker, grinding it out in small-town restaurants. She was drinking, too. And chasing women. She tried studying chemistry at Indiana University Bloomington but realized she wanted to write, so she got a creative writing degree from Columbia College Chicago.
In between classes, she worked in restaurant kitchens, eventually landing a job waiting tables and expediting food at Trio, the restaurant the chef Grant Achatz ran before Alinea, where she also worked for him.
Despite the insight that comes with maturity and a decade of working the steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, she can still obsess over criticism and the backbiting gossip endemic in professional kitchens. To wit, she had heard that Mr. Achatz didn’t think much of her.
Not so, he said in an interview. “There is a certain amount of honesty there that resonates,” he said. “She’s not playing the game.”
In 2008, Ms. Regan began selling food she made or grew at farmers’ markets, including warm pierogi she stuffed with beets and sautéed in butter. Chicago Magazine named them the best pierogi in the city. Two years later, she started a small underground restaurant with an elaborate menu in her apartment. Fans encouraged her to start a traditional restaurant and were willing to back her.
Ms. Regan opened Elizabeth in 2012, naming it after a beloved sister who was a drinker, too. She died, possibly from a stroke, during a night in jail that followed a fight with her husband.
Success, and Stranger Things
Elizabeth is a small restaurant tucked between a tire shop and a soccer supply store in a north-side Chicago neighborhood. The open kitchen in the back feels like something your well-off friends who like to cook might set up until their loft got remodeled. The décor is deeply personal, with thrift-store teacups and antlers and Funko figurines. In the bathroom, a collection of small logs leans against the toilet. A thoughtfully considered shelf holds bobby pins and a marble box of tampons.
It was here that Ms. Regan learned to weed out the arrogant young male chefs who challenged her authority and to temper her own tendencies to either withdraw or yell like a coyote and fire people if things weren’t done properly. She taught herself to become, in her words, a girl boss.
“I can’t really say I have gone to chef ladies for advice necessarily,” she said. Part of it is simple shyness, or maybe respect for their time. When she went to Sqirl in Los Angeles recently, she didn’t tell the chef, Jessica Koslow, that she was coming even though the two had cooked together before and had spent time together in Copenhagen at Mr. Redzepi’s MAD conference.
She just ate, and left a copy of her book. “I know how much pressure there is when another chef calls you up and says they’re coming in,” Ms. Regan said.
Ms. Koslow was disappointed but understood. “She’s just so cool by even doing that, for being someone who doesn’t need to be recognized,” she said. “She is just trying to be her, and that’s so refreshing.”
Doug Seibold, who runs Agate Publishing in Evanston, Ill., has an imprint dedicated to Midwestern literature. He had been following Ms. Regan’s career, and reached out five years ago, thinking she might want to do a cookbook. She didn’t, but she was interested in a memoir. It came out in July. By December, several publications had picked it as one of the year’s best.
“I think some people were unprepared for a Michelin-starred chef to be the daughter of a steelworker union rep who grew up with sisters who were drunk and fighting all the time,” Mr. Seibold said.
The memoir made the long list for the National Book Awards, the first time a food book landed there in nearly 40 years. The September morning the list was announced, she and Ms. Hamlin woke up to dozens of messages. They had no idea what had happened.
“I had to actually look up the National Book Award,” Ms. Regan said. “It was a huge shock.”
She is working on her second book. It’s about foraging, but also about inherited trauma and her family’s cooking lineage.
The book advances were small, and went right back into the restaurant. The couple relies mostly on income from cooking classes and Elizabeth’s popular theme menus, which can cost close to $600 for two with wine and can last three or four hours.
Ms. Regan created one inspired by the television show “Stranger Things,” and prepared her “Game of Thrones” menu by reading all five books and highlighting every food reference. During November, the theme was 1980s Nintendo. The menu featured dishes like a Super Mario mushroom built from a root-beer leaf with Meyer lemon and a slice of black truffle sandwiched between brick pastry.
“I basically gauge how far she is willing to go,” said Ms. Hamlin, who is as animated as her wife is introspective. She grew up in a Southern Indiana restaurant family, and fell for Ms. Regan when she was working for a wine distributor and landed the Elizabeth account. Now she is a full partner, running service, worrying about staff and matching beverages as eclectic as the food.
They also offer an elegant, seasonal tasting menu, which is so personal it can restore an eater’s faith in a format that has become cliché. Late last fall, she served a dense, rosy slice of duck that had been dry-aged for three weeks, with a sauce made from the apples and wild cranberries we had harvested together at Milkweed a month earlier.
Still, 2019 was a tough year, even though the book was a hit and they hosted their first guests at the inn. Ms. Regan had to close her two other Chicago businesses: Bunny, the Micro Bakery, which had been entangled with a difficult investor, and Kitsune, a 24-seat mash-up of Japan and the American Midwest that was a critical darling when it opened in 2017.
The closings were a blow to her ego, but she had to consolidate. It was the only way to save Elizabeth, expand the inn and create some semblance of a balanced family life.
“Everybody around me seemed to be, like: ‘Hashtag-cheflife, it’s all good,’ ” Ms. Regan told Mr. Chang on his podcast, “and I’m like, what are they talking about?”
She also had a miscarriage last year. Ms. Hamlin has medical challenges, so it’s up to Ms. Regan to carry their child. More attempts to get pregnant haven’t worked yet, but they’re trying.
On Their Own
The Milkweed Inn is all Pendleton blankets, deer taxidermy and wood smoke. The water pressure is great, and the basement is filled with new fishing gear and inflatable kayaks. A copy of the 2016 Best New Chefs edition of Food & Wine is in one bathroom. There Ms. Regan is on the cover, the only woman in a sea of 10 men.
You can rent one of three rooms inside the house, a platform tent or the tiny Airstream trailer the couple took around the country to cook pop-up dinners in 2018. It has a bumper sticker that reads “Ted Bundy was a Republican,” which is just one reason the handful of people who own hunting cabins nearby were initially suspicious of the two women.
After a walk to look for mushrooms, Ms. Hamlin removed the orange vests the dogs have to wear during hunting season. Ms. Regan was busy sweeping the new wood floor. She had two walleyes hanging by their lips over a fire outdoors, and a pile of chores to do before they left the next day.
Talk turned to what little progress has been made for women in the restaurant business and whether her book would become a movie and just what it means to homestead a new life here.
Ms. Hamlin is still adjusting.
“I know we’re safer here than when we’re in the city, but I am scared of bears and I’m scared of old white men sometimes,” she said. “This can be quite isolating.”
“That’s why I like it,” Ms. Regan said. She slipped on a jacket and headed outside to check on the fish.
