cave mapping is an incredibly unique challenge because of the inherent three dimensionality of caves - even though aboveground maps are also (obviously) of 3d spaces, they often functionally only need to be 2 dimensional to show things like roads, paths, and buildings, which all exist generally on the same plane, with some changes in elevation (which are easy enough to mark, but also for many common uses of maps straight up arent necessary). a map of a cave system has to (somehow) flatten into three dimensionality a series of tunnels of different sizes, shapes, proportions, makeups, and with a variety of possible hazard that are all stacked on top of each other, loop back around, connect at unexpected places, divert and then come back, end unexpectedly, drop into chutes etc etc...and this mapping has to be done while you're in the cave - which is often dangerous and disorienting, even if you have experience. even maps of caves made by 3d scanning technology are incomprehensible at BEST.

like what is that. AND that doesnt even capture all the information you actually need to navigate. AND because caves are often tight and hard to navigate, hauling 3d scanning software in isnt always an option. cave maps made by hand are often made on transparent or translucent paper that allows the cavers to take note of their three dimensionality (i cant find any examples of these kinds of maps online and its KILLING ME, i learned this in a museum but didnt take any pictures. heartbreaking </3)

and many of these caves are continuing to grow all the time. it's an uphill battle to map an impossible space that was never intended for humans and can never truly be completed and by god i love it so much <3
