Wretched Power | 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐏𝐎𝐄𝐓𝐒 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐓𝐘 (BOOK ONE) (on Wattpad)
Death can cause people to do the unpredictable.
Welton Academy didn't house girls. There were no exceptions. Generation after generation after generation of grade-hypnotised men and their sons walked the halls, slept in the beds, and ate the famous Mystery Meat every day. They expected their great-great grandsons to attend the same school, carry the same amount of books, sleep in the same beds, and obey the same rules.

But... death can cause people to do the unpredictable.

While Ye May
The dinosaurs died in springtime,
with flowers in full bloom,
unaware the skies would be
delivering their doom.
A meteor fell from nowhere,
about six miles wide,
collided with the planet, and
the dinosaurs all died.
Some people hate the winter,
can’t wait until the spring;
but often, when the days are dark,
you’ve not yet seen a thing.

To Robert Herrick, To Fear Much of Crones
I’ll gather me buds whenever I may Middle age I’m done a-fighting And this old girl who sighs today Tomorrow will be high-fiving
The glorious klieg light of heaven, the Moon The fatter she’s a-getting the wider her spider’s web is spun the less male-gaze I’m a-fretting
That age is best which is the now When broken hearts beat on, much stronger but man’splain ageism to me, Robert And I’ll listen to ye no longer
We be not shy and time’s up you see so while I’m talking, please be quiet for having lost the patriarchy, you dudes unleashed a Grab-Back Riot.

First image is John Williams Waterhouse’s tribute to the original Herrick poem: “Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May,” - a poem that has always bugged me.

17th October 1660, Nine signers of the death warrant of Charles I, who was executed in 1649, are executed. After the restoration of the monarchy in this year, and with Charles II on the throne, those who had been involved in the trial and execution of his father, including those who had already died; were hung, drawn and quartered, their bodies thrown into a pit, and their heads placed on spikes. The remains of Oliver Cromwell who had proclaimed himself Lord Protector under the English Commonwealth (1649 to 1660), and who had been dead for two years in 1660, were also dug up, hung drawn and quartered, and his head placed on a spike where it was displayed at Westminster in London. Cromwell’s head was still on display when the English poet Robert Herrrick passed away fourteen years later, Herrick was buried on the 15th October 1674. It is very possible that Herrrick saw the head, due to the fact that he lived in Westminster at the time, exactly the same area where the head was displayed. Perhaps it was the sight of the head that influenced the carpe diem poem he is best known for. To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time. ``Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying’. I know. I’m supposed to be reading this book. But there’s sunshine. And babies. And puppies. And I know how it ends (Nazis lose!) which makes it hard to keep reading. so... we’re playing outside today, savoring the heat of summer while we can. #bookstagram #babies #puppies #gatheryerosebuds (at Prospect Hill, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnCiqDul0Yx/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=cbrlt59a6g3o
