Sorry I can't get over how Arnould Galopin's "Le Docteur Omega" (1906) was directly inspired by HG Well's "The Time Machine" (1895) and "First Men In The Moon" (1901).
Having read both The Time Machine and First Men In The Moon (albeit, I read the latter a long while ago and don't remember all the details), I can immediately see where the inspiration comes from, including the same type of material being used to launch a rocket without combustion-- the creation of a material that is lighter than air, and able to be applied to various materials to make them not only incredibly buoyant, but also make them get launched (or explode) violently, lol.
Arnould Galopin published HG Wells fanfic just 4 years after First Men In The Moon was published lol.

Thought I'd give this one a go again since its popular, for those that dont know this is where i talk about how to skirt around copyright usually by way of using a public domain character to fulfill the same role as the character you want to use.
The Doctor from Doctor Who while already vague enough that you can probably just make a character that travels trough time and imply its the doctor as long as you dont name things like the TARDIS (in my works i call it The Great Machine) but you can also use Doctor Omega by Arnould Galopin. It's a novel from 1906 about a guy who travels in a strange machine through time and space. In the Doctor Who expanded universe he has been confirmed to be The Doctor so its one workaround.
May I also suggest looking into Jenny Everywhere? While not exactly like the Doctor she does fulfill a similar niche and has appeared in Doctor Who extended universe.
Planet of the Apes - Again the concept of planet of the apes isnt copyrighted, the name is trademarked and individual characters are of course copyrighted but the idea is very much up for grabs, just call it something else like Ape World, Planet of King Kong or my personal favorite alternative Land of the Monkey King
this is an awful long monologue you're making me edit Arnould Galopin!
It does, however, contain this gem of a quote from a public domain book that is 117 years old :)
An old formula found in a sixteenth-century alchemy book prompted me to try this experiment. You can't imagine the new ideas that we sometimes get from old books.
